30° SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflection in preparation for next weekend’s Gospel
This Sunday’s Gospel contrasts two different religious atti-tudes. First, the self-righteous Pharisee. Here is a man who seems to impeccably follow the law. In some terms, he is the model citizen! Honest, fiscally generous, and faithful to his marriage vows. But something else lurks in his heart: pride. “O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity … or even like this tax collector.” For the Pharisee, no fault can be admitted. The only way to stay on top is to preserve one’s im-age — even to God, it seems! — and point out the flaws of oth-ers from the pedestal. In the back of the temple, hidden and bowed down, is the tax collector. “O God, by merciful to me a sinner.” This man’s prayer is one of supplication and petition. He isn’t afraid to express his sinfulness and misery. This, Jesus says, is the one who “went home justified.” How many times have we heard the mission of Jesus to seek and save the lost? Jesus is the one who dines with sinners and invites every heart to repentance. But how can we return to him if we don’t know we’ve left? How can we receive God’s grace when we’re adamant we don’t need it? We all have within us both the Pharisee and the tax collector. We want to be sure of ourselves and to be admired in the eyes of others. Yet we also know that we are not always what we wish to present to others. We can be preoccupied with our self-image and feel anxious about our flaws being exposed. Because we do have flaws, after all. We are the sinner in need of mercy. This Sunday, will we humble ourselves enough to ask for it?

We ’ve had better days.
It seems like lately, in both Church and State, the people in charge have failed us — and, in many cases, hurt us — in big, awful, terrible ways. That leaves the rest of us in a bit of a mess.
Where am I supposed to look for guidance when the “adults” can ’t seem to get it together? What am I supposed to do, say, or think?
When the structures, leaders, and direction you used to have so much confidence in seem to be crumbling into chaos, it is difficult to find your place in it. It seems like your footing was taken out from under you, and you ’re not super sure how to regain your stance — because the blueprint for rebuilding was created by the very people who let it all fall down in the first place.
A natural consequence of these situations is to look around for guidance instead of looking up to the people in charge. We lose hope in the original leadership and begin to turn to ordinary people, just like us, to help us make sense of everything. We have seen this in the mobilization of teens af-ter the horrific school shooting in Parkland, FL — that, in times when leaders fail, the everyday per-son (even if they ’re young) gets an opportunity to step up.
This call to rise to the occasion is not limited to only a few. The invitation is for every single one of us to be light in the darkness, to be an example for others. But before we jump up and say, “I ’ll do it!”, here are some things that should happen as we prepare to lead:
Take a step back.
We are oversaturated with information, and it seems even more intense in times of crisis. It be-comes increasingly difficult to drown out the many voices informing us of the latest unfolding of events surrounding an issue.
It is important to make sure to take time away from all the news and media outlets and take time for some self-care. Are you keeping up with your daily prayer? Are you eating good, healthy food at regular times? Are you caring for your body through physical activity? Are you taking time to laugh and have fun with family or friends? Are you accomplishing the tasks of the day (homework, chores) that need to get done? Are you getting to bed at a reasonable hour? The balance between staying informed and getting overwhelmed is a tough one to find, but taking a personal inventory of these questions is a good place to begin to make sure you are ready to respond or lead.

Octubre 27, 2019 30° DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO

IVE THE I"U#$Y - As we live out our life of faith, it is easy to lose heart and lose confidence in God’s power and ef-fective presence. We can fall into apathy. Given the immensity of the concerns that abound, we feel powerless and can become unmotivated to perse-vere. To combat this weariness, Jesus tells his friends to pray always. Persisting in prayer allows us to find the determination, strength, and con-viction to continue on course even when presented with difficulties. If we are determined in our pur-suit of God, we will eventually find God breaking through our darkness with the light of His pres-ence, gifting us with contemplative sight so that we can see as He sees and love as He loves. It is only when we take on the person of Christ that we are able, with God’s help, to touch the world’s pain and loneliness.
