President’s Report – Kristy Weber, MD

Happy New Year to all MSTS Members! I want to highlight some of the important activities occurring in the Society, as well as new initiatives since our Summer 2013 newsletter.

2014-2017 MSTS Strategic PlanA MSTS Member Needs Survey was conducted at the end of last summer. One hundred fifty-three (60% of the membership) of you completed it. Many added thoughts and comments by email or phone. We had not circulated a survey in the recent past so it provided helpful insight as to how members feel about the Society. Many strengths of MSTS

substantial effort on the part of both MSTS members and our management team. There will be new opportunities to volunteer and contribute to the Society, and I hope many of you will commit your time, your talent and your effort to these important initiatives.

Updated MSTS BylawsThe MSTS bylaws need to be brought into line with the new strategic plan. Our bylaws have been extensively reviewed and revised by the Executive Committee, our management team, and an attorney specializing in association law and will be circulated for your review and comment in February 2014. Please take the time to send your comments and suggestions to us. The Executive Committee will review your comments and send a final draft of the proposed bylaws prior to Specialty Day. We will vote on the proposed bylaws during the MSTS Business Meeting at Specialty Day on March 15, 2014.

Specialty Day 2014 Business MeetingTo continue our theme of moving MSTS forward, we need to focus on the future, rather than the past. For our monthly Executive Committee conference calls we implemented a ‘consent agenda,’ which allows us to group together the routine, procedural, informational and self-explanatory non-controversial items and then vote in a single motion on all

Adoption of the MSTS ‘CAP’-likevolunteer systemIn an effort to respond to member requests for more transparency and a fair opportunity to volunteer within the Society, we instituted a Committee Appointment Program (CAP)-like online system similar to the AAOS’ method of recruiting volunteers. We are sending Society-wide emails when there are positions open to participate in committees, project teams, writing opportunities, etc. We will continue to refine the process and related communications, though let us know how we are doing with this.

We need your input!During the next three to six months, you will likely receive email requests to provide your thoughts on various aspects of the structure or details of the Society. For instance, there will be a newsletter readership survey in Spring 2014 in order to find out what you would find valuable in this biannual circulation to the membership. Please respond if you have time as this will shape the future of the Society. MSTS Staff Extraordinaire! This newsletter marks just over a year that the MSTS has contracted with the AAOS to provide Society staffing services. The amount of effort and expertise provided in 2013 by Jennifer Jones, CAE, Angela Schnepf, CAE, Megan Lusk, and Anna Greene, CPA, was phenomenal. They are professionals in every sense of the word and have moved the Society toward best practices in process, structure, and legal areas. For example, MSTS now has an Antitrust Policy, a Privacy Policy, a Travel Policy, a Disclosure Policy, and a Document Retention Policy to name just a few of the ways the MSTS is trying to protect the Society, its volunteers, and its members. These, along with our other policies, can be accessed on our website here. Without such management support we would not have started upon a strategic planning initiative. Kudos to all of them for their incredible work!

Please contact me at [email protected] or the management team at [email protected] if you have any suggestions or ideas. Thanks so much for your interest and effort! Kristy L. Weber, MDMSTS President

At the 2013 MSTS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, we discussed options for the 2015 Annual Meeting. There was overwhelming support for a joint meeting with the International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS). I am pleased to report that the MSTS Executive Committee and ISOLS are in preliminary discussions for a joint meeting in Orlando, Florida in October 2015. We are working on the exact dates, venue, and format. As you may recall, the last joint meeting with ISOLS was in Boston in 2009 and by all accounts was a huge success. It is never too soon to start thinking about studies and abstracts so that we can have another successful, synergistic meeting!

of the items, after allowing anyone to request that a specific item be moved to the full agenda for individual attention. This gives the Executive Committee more time to have strategic discussion about the future of the Society. Our Business Meetings in New Orleans and Houston will be structured in a similar fashion. You will receive the agenda for the meeting along with information and committee reports in advance. The Business Meeting in New Orleans (Specialty Day) will focus on the Strategic Plan for the Society, as well as approval of the proposed Bylaws. This structure will allow more time for ‘open mic’ with the goal of thinking ‘forward’ as a Society and how we can make membership more meaningful and satisfying.

Meeting with the AAOS Presidential LineApproximately 5 years ago a tradition was started: the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ (AAOS) Presidential Line met with each specialty society to foster collaboration and communication. To continue the tradition, the MSTS Executive Committee will meet with the AAOS Presidential Line on March 14, 2014 in New Orleans. Some of our agenda items include education collaboration and workforce concerns. We will provide a summary of our discussion during our Business Meeting.

Thank you to the Strategic Plan Workgroup:

Hard to believe that 2014 is here… it seems like just yesterday that the talking heads were warning of planes falling from the skies, and global computer malfunctions for Y2K! Time does indeed fly.

Coming off a strong meeting in San Francisco (congratulations to Richard O’Donnell, MD and his team), the MSTS is moving into 2014 with a bang. In this issue, Dr. Weber reports on the great work of the strategic planning work group, and much of this information will be presented in the business meeting at Specialty Day in New Orleans. Please come and participate in the meeting, and let your voice be heard! We truly want to engage our membership, and both improve member participation and operational transparency. We are initiating a number of new opportunities for members to serve in the Society and encourage you to look for ways to contribute and make a difference.

Speaking of engagement, it is important to the society leadership that we provide the kind of information in our newsletter that will be valuable to our membership. While providing some operational information about the MSTS makes sense, it is my hope that we can focus more on interesting information that provides meaningful updates to our members, allows a ‘big picture’ approach to what is transpiring amongst the membership, and allows us to see the accomplishments of our talented colleagues. To that end, I welcome and encourage you to send any news items that you may have, no

The MSTS finances remain strong. Current assets exceed $870,000. Thanks to a very successful annual meeting, the society is ahead of budget for 2013. Thanks to the efforts of our MSTS management team, MSTS leadership, and a dedicated membership for continued financial stability and growth. We look forward to a successful 2014 and anticipate another financially rewarding year!

Treasurer’s Report – Robert H. Quinn, MD

Education Committee – Joseph Benevenia, MD, Chair

With high hopes and endless efforts, we are trying to expand tumor-related education by increasing the number of Instructional Course Lectures, Symposium, and Scientific Exhibits for the upcoming AAOS Annual Meetings. New Education Committee members will be required to create and submit ICL/Symposia for the AAOS Annual Meetings and committee members will be required to participate in these programs.

matter how big or small, and we will consider them for inclusion. We might even consider a focused ‘member highlight’ section so that we can keep up with our colleagues. Please let us know your thoughts, and feel free to contact me directly ([email protected]) or our production staff lead, Megan Lusk ([email protected]). We will send a readership survey to the membership this Spring to gather your thoughts on what you would like to see in your Society’s newsletter. Our newsletter is a success if it contains just what you want to see… so let us hear from you! I promise to respond to any inquiries and suggestions you may have.

Here’s to a successful 2014… there is a lot going on in the Society and we welcome your engagement and participation!

New MSTS Funded ProjectsThe MSTS Research Committee received four competitive grant applications in response to its RFA last year. The Research Committee would like to thank the members who submitted applications for funding.

Ongoing MSTS Funded Projects1. The Prophylactic Antibiotic Regimens

in Tumor Surgery (PARITY): A Pilot Randomized Multi-Center Clinical Trial is up and running. The PI is Michelle Ghert, MD and is coordinated by the Center for Evidence-Based Orthopaedics at McMaster University. The trial is an international, multi-center randomized double-blind surgical trial in which patients undergoing endoprosthetic reconstruction of the lower extremity are randomized to either short-term (24 hours) or long-term (five days) post-operative antibiotics. The primary endpoint is deep infection within the first year following implantation.

To date, the trial has enrolled 36 patients across Canada, the United States and Australia. Thanks in large part to MSTS participation, we have enrolled over one-third of the target sample of 100 patients for the pilot phase of the trial. With new sites becoming enrollment-ready this year, we expect to reach our pilot sample size late this year or early 2015.

Interested in participating? Contact Michelle Ghert via email at [email protected], as all MSTS sponsored studies are open to all MSTS members.

2. The ongoing MSTS CTRA Fracture Prediction Prospective Study continues to enroll patients. The PI’s are Brian Snyder, MD and Tim Damron, MD, who are pursuing additional federal funding. Grant applications rely on continued enrollment of patients so all centers are asked to keep their IRB status current. One manuscript is in

The MSTS congratulates and thanks all involved in supporting this multi-institutional prospective study through their efforts in financial support, patient enrollment, and participation. Anyone interested in participating in the study should contact Ara Nazarian, [email protected], for more information.

AAOS Clinician-Scholar Development ProgramThe 2014 Clinician Scholar Development Program (CSDP) will be September 25-27, 2014, in Rosemont, Illinois. The program is open to residents, fellows, and junior faculty. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) selects some applicants and the MSTS supports up to two additional applicants with priority given to fellows and junior faculty. Our rationale is to cultivate talented individuals who will hopefully submit clinical trials to the MSTS or be involved in other scholarly and leadership activities. Applications are due March 31, 2014.

Young Investigators Initiative Grant Mentoring and Career Development Program The United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) is dedicated to raising public awareness and to increase the research of musculoskeletal diseases. The Young Investigator Initiative is a

career development and grant mentoring program that provides early-career investigators an opportunity to work with experienced researchers in our field to assist them in securing funding and other survival skills required for pursuing an academic career. This career development and grant mentoring program is open to promising junior faculty, senior fellows or post-doctoral researchers nominated by their department or division chairs. It is also open to senior fellows or residents that are doing research and have a faculty appointment in place or confirmed. Basic and clinical investigators, with or without training awards (including K awards) are invited to apply. Investigators selected to take part in the program attend two workshops, 12-18 months apart, and work with faculty between workshops to develop their grant applications.

This past spring, Drs. Kevin Jones and Michael Monument from the University of Utah attended. The next application deadline is July 15th, and the next workshop is in the fall of 2014, (date to be determined) in Toronto, Ontario. The unique aspect of this program is the opportunity for attendees to maintain a relationship with a mentor until their application is funded. Application details can be found on the USBJI website.

If you have any questions about the MSTS Research Committee or would like to discuss ideas you may have about research projects, please contact me at [email protected].

The CPT Coding Committee has no active oncology code changes on the current schedule. There are new code values for reconstructive surgery that will be of interest to the members. The total hip values for RVU’s went down five percent. The total knee RVU values went down 10 percent. The hip hemiarthroplasty RVU values were unchanged. The unicompartmental knee RVU values increased five percent. The underlying reason for the decrease in the two primary joint codes was the surveys completed by the AAOS members showed decreased OR times and decreased length of stay in the hospital after both primary total hip and knee procedures. The AAOS and American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) worked hard to decrease the effect of the surveys. CMS actually increased the RVU above the RUC recommended values after meeting with representatives from the two orthopedic organizations in August. These changes took effect on January 1, 2014.

There are new codes coming for ultrasound guided procedures and injections. This could affect some members of the MSTS. CMS has found that the number of ultrasound machines has skyrocketed with huge increases in billings. Those codes will come out this year and be effective in 2015.

Thank you to those who attended the 2013 MSTS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California! With over 275 attendees, 60

podium presentations and more than 80 poster presentations, the meeting was a huge success!

The Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) Executive Board initiated a strategic planning process in 2013. This process included completing an environmental scan, an internal audit and surveying our members. Once all information was collected, a strategic planning workgroup was formulated. The workgroup reviewed the data and participated in a number of planning sessions to discuss the future of the Society. Key issues included how to be more responsive and proactive as a society as well as how to bring more value to the membership.

As a result of the work completed, the Society adopted a three-year strategic plan. With the plan also comes a revised Vision and Mission statement.

MSTS VisionThe Musculoskeletal Tumor Society will be a recognized authority on all aspects of orthopaedic oncology, an influential participant in policy-making for orthopaedic oncology services, and responsive to the needs of orthopaedic oncologists and their patients.

This 90- minute clinical workshop will focus on the most common primary malignant bone tumor: osteosarcoma. Drug resistance and metastasis remain the main causes of death. The current multi-drug chemotherapy regimens have been used in various combinations and dosages for the past 20 years with no substantial improvement in overall mortality. Data about the current treatment and outcomes will be reviewed. The majority of time will focus on the role of cancer stem cells in mechanisms of drug resistance, tumor recurrence, and metastasis. The discussion period of the workshop will be used to identify strategies that can be used to further our understanding of the role of stem cells in osteosarcoma progression and to translate this paradigm into new treatment strategies.
