ALSI. Love songs were plentiful and the day was lots of fun. Cafeteria player – Vicki Eriqat, Brandel player – Steve Halpern. Russell Camp & Bob were there to open up the sound booth for Jack Marotte, and set up chairs/tables outside for our break. Bill Barr was our MC for the first section of the day. The Reunion Band arrived at 12:15 and started setting up their equipment. Di-ane Polinski was our mystery player – she played and sang standing up and did a very good job!!

Juergen Rosenfeld played several songs on his Hohner, dressed in his Alpine clothes – hat, jacket, pants, etc. His songs were: I beg Your Pardon, Please release me, Green Green Grass, La Paloma, Auf Wiederseh’n.

Steve Halpern was up next playing his Roland digital accordion – his songs were: Autumn Leaves, Sabor Ami, Tum-balalaika. Steve is very busy, also playing at Brandel today.

Next was Al Jacobs playing love songs from around the world. His songs were: La Vie En Rose, That’s Amore, You are my Heart Alone, Daisy Daisy, After All These Years & My Funny Valentine. How can he memorize all that music???

Jane Ford was the hit of the day. I think she got more compliments on her playing than anyone. Her songs were: Red Sails in the Sunset, Bella Notte (This is the night), The Song is Ended. You must play for us again, Jane.

Gordon Kohl finished out the day by playing a couple of songs in tribute to two of our long time accordion friends who passed away recently– Tom Moffitt & Pe-

ter Robuffo. His songs were: Put a little love in your heart & What the world needs now is Love.

Our coffee/cake break featured a cake brought by Jack & Sharon Marotte in honor of their anniversary, Sharon’s birthday plus all February anniversarys and birthdays. Al Pisel-li is great about bringing 2 gallons of water for coffee, Ted Hill brought sodas, Mary Lou Erwin brought ice cream, Diane Polinskibrought some See’s candy. Our servers/helpers were: Jane Ford, Lois Lahoud, Sharon Marotte, Vicki Call, Al Piselli and Ted Hill.

Once again we had a great time with accor-dion music. We had a good crowd with lots of spirit!! Come and join us and you will have a good time, too!!! —

SHOWCASE REVIEW

NEW REUNION ENSEMBLE

By Bob Warner

Once again we were really pleased to see our friends, THE NEW REUNION ENSEMBLE on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. Every group has a per-sonality and this ensemble is bright, vivacious and musically effervescent. And why wouldn’t they be, under the direction of their conductor, the very personable Lucille Camatti. She has fashioned this group of skilled musicians into a highly competent performing ensemble. The instrument setup con-sisted of Bobby Dietsch on his Scan-dalli accordion, Mary Lynn Blucker on her Giulietti accordion, Mark Deily on his Roland FR7x all electronic accor-dion, Dale Hardeman on the key-board and Mike on drums. The resident skills in this group are huge. When it’s all put together organized by Dale’s arrangement you get a big sound with everything amplified and carefully balanced. They presented a new repertoire that held the interest of our audience throughout. It takes a lot of hard, dedicated individual practice and rehearsing to play like they do.

They launched their program with a Zydeco song and vocals by Dale, a somewhat unusual but refreshing number for them. It was a fun piece with an infectious rhythm. Dale and Mark provided some interesting organ and sax background. This group, known for its classical playing, surprised us with a jazzy, bouncy “TAKE ME TO THE CHURCH ON TIME’ from the show, “MY FAIR LADY”. To carry on contemporary music they fol-lowed this with a mellow “MOONLIGHT SERE-NADE” arranged by Mark. It was a good match for the Glen Miller sound. “SWEDISH RHAPSODY” had Bobby and Mary Lynn playing some interesting variations around the basic melody, at times almost an obbligato to the melody. Mark provided a fine French horn backup on the FR7x. “LA VIEN ROSE” came across as a slow dreamy melody with the accordions leading with middle reed voicings.

They added several of the most popular French ballads using a rich combination of voicings throughout. It was a really novel and fine arrange-ment by Dale. When they performed “THE JERSEY BOUNCE” we knew they had really changed their repertoire. It was bouncy and danceable with some well worked out improvisations. “VIENNA, MY CITY OF DREAMS” was sweet and leisurely and wonderfully danceable. “SHAMBA SAMBA” took us out to the end of the first half of the program. There was a lot of great percussion and drums

pushing the sharp, samba rhythm. This was one of Dale’s compositions. The three accordions played a prominent melody line.

After the break many from the audi-ence were persuaded to participate in the “CHICKEN DANCE”. Of course it started slowly with the usual increases in tempo. It was a lot of fun. Moving on, the polka, “NO BEER IN HEAVEN” got everyone’s feet tapping. Bobby played the lead and sang the verses. Polkas are right down his wheelhouse. A novelty,

“HOT POTATO”, had a modernistic jazz beat, somewhat along the lines of a Stan Kenton sound. It was short and hot. Bobby then performed a very emotional arrangement of “ALL IS WELL WITH MY SOUL”. It was based on a story about a man who had lost his daughters. There was a melody line for both treble and bass. This was pure acous-tic accordion. Their next number, “ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST”, I believe was taken from a movie score of the same name. Mark started the sweet, plaintive melody theme supported by the group which then led on to the body of the piece. A delicate soprano voice was added by the key-board. This was very different!

It was swing time with Irving Berlin’s ‘BLUE SKIES” where Mark and Dale played a great swing riff or two on the melody. This was also Mark’s chance to do the vocals. Very nice. To finish, Lucille and the group gave us a repeat of “THE JERSEY BOUNCE”. We really enjoyed the afternoon with the ensemble. Their new repertoire was highly en-tertaining and a worthwhile endeavor. We’ll be looking forward to what they will be doing next. —

COMING IN MAY

ALSI Presents a Showcase with

Of Santa BarbaraAccordionist Heinz Trilck has a repertoire of more than 1,000 melodies — classical, folk, dance and jazz — a selection of which he plays at 10 to 15 gigs a week at 23 senior facilities and rehabilitation places around town. The native of Hamburg, Germany, 78, began playing the instrument when he was 21. His education ended at the age of 13

when he became a brick layer because "my father was killed during World War II, and I was the oldest of five children." In 1964, Heinz Trilck immigrated to Milwaukee, Wis., with his wife and two children, where he lived until moving to San-ta Barbara in 1977. "I retired seven years ago after I had a hip replacement," said the former owner of Pacific Estates, a masonry company. Heinz is also a founding member of the Accordion International Music Society of Santa Barbara, an active group of 56 who play at events like the Summer Solstice parade, French Festival and Danish Days in Solvang. Ad-mission is $8/members, $10/guests and good for both Showcases. Heinz will perform at 2:30 pm —

ALSI Presents a Showcase with

First of all I really love the accordion. I am thankful to have been a part of ALSI since about 1988. I found ALSI through my friend Farrie Ann Nichols. Then I found Gor-don Kohl for lessons and was inspired by his great talents. I first became acquainted with the accordion when I was about nine year's old. A lady came to our house in Allied Gardens, with a twelve week lesson program and a rental twelve bass accordion at Ozzie's Music Studio on El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego. I played pretty well but after a year or so was not able to read music. My teacher would play my lesson for me and

I was playing by ear only. My father took me to Bertolino's Accordion Studio. Mr. Bertolino knew I could not read mu-sic and set about to make sure I could read music. He was a great teacher, and would not play my lesson. He made me learn to read and would dazzle me with his playing skills. I really liked the way Mr. Bertalino sounded with his profes-sional accordion. I had hopes of playing like him someday. Also, I remember hearing Lou Fanucchi play in the studio and recitals, he was the child prodigy and he inspired me to practice more. Thanks ALSI for all of the years of great accordi-on music experience and fellowship that I've enjoyed because of this great club. "Viva la Accordion"! Admission is $8/members, $10/guests and good for both Showcases. Linda will perform at 3:15 pm —

ALSI was represented by Al & Terri Cerruti, Vicki Eriqat & Sharon Marotte, plus other ALSI members who were not from San Diego. The concert Sunday night was abso-lutely spectacular!! The room was filled to ca-pacity with many snow birds in attendance. 55 accordion players were in the orchestra, plus a bass player & drummer. 18 states were repre-sented, 3 provinces of Canada & 2 people from Italy. The songs we played were: Star Spangled Banner, Variazioni in Blue, Moon River, West Side Story Potpourri, Polka “Accelerando”, My Funny Valentine, Medley from Les Miserables, & The Big Chuich Tarantella. Joan Cochran Sommers directed two of the selections & Stas Venglevski directed the other selections. I had 12 family members there and Vicki had 2 family members there.

Joan Cochran Sommers was honored for her 80th birthday. Saturday night was a special night for her. A huge cake was presented, and lots of messages from around the world via video. Vicki and I played about 20 minutes during Saturday lunch time, we also sang a du-et (sort of) with John & Gwyn Lister playing their accordions. It was Adios, Farewell and sang to Dan & Joan Grauman.

This is the last time this event will happen in Mesa, AZ. It was fun to see some old
