Introduction

Sometimes it is the simple things that make the biggest difference. Water, for instance,is one of those essential elements of life, yet most folks are dehydrated. We seem tolove to focus on the fringe, those obscure elements or minerals or nutrients that promisesome hope of a fountain of youth. The problem is that we end up forgetting about thebasics, the building blocks of life.

Let ! s look at the most basic building blocks in the human body: DNA. Methionine andcysteine are the primary types of dietary sulfur. Your body requires methionine andvitamin B-12 to synthesize S-adenosylmethionine, a substance that is involved with theproduction of DNA, also called deoxyribonucleic acid.

So at the most basic level your body uses sulfur to produce DNA. We could go into amillion other reasons that understanding sulfur ! s role in the human body is important, but let ! s stick with the basics and with information and research surrounding MSM orMethylsulfonylmethane.

Your body needs oxygen... are you getting enough? Most of the time we never give a thought about how much oxygen is reaching our cells. We assume that just because we are breathing that we are getting enough.

There is a problem however: most of your oxygen comes from water, not air. That ! s right! Air contains 21% while water contains 89% oxygen. You must drink enoughchlorine-free water to get the proper oxygen to your cells.

Your body needs sulfur... are you getting enough?Modern farming practices have robbed our soils of sulfur. We simply can ! t get enough inour diet. You must supplement.

Sulfur is one of the few elements that transports oxygen right into your cells.

Anemic Soil

The dirt on America " s dirt

The following excerpts concerning Senate Document 264 of the 74th Congress, 2ndSession 1936, were found in the March 1936 issue of Cosmopolitan:

“… 99 percent of the American people are decient in … minerals, and … a markeddeciency in any one of the more important minerals actually results in disease.”

“Do you know that most of us today are suffering from certain dangerous dietdeciencies which cannot be remedied until the depleted soils from which our foodscome are brought into proper mineral balance? The alarming fact is that foods–fruitsand vegetables and grains–now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longercontains enough of certain needed minerals, are starving us–no matter how much of

them we eat!”“We know that vitamins are complex chemical substances which are indispensable tonutrition, and that each of them is important for the normal function of some specialstructure of the body. Disorder and disease result from any vitamin deciency. It is notcommonly realized, however, that vitamins control the body ! s appropriation of minerals, and that in the absence of minerals they have no function to perform. Lacking vitamins, the system can make some use of minerals, but lacking minerals, vitamins are useless.”

“Laboratory tests prove that the fruits, vegetables, grains, eggs and even the milk andmeats of today are not what they were a few generations ago. No man of today can eat

enough fruits and vegetables to supply his system with the mineral salts he requires forperfect health….”

“It is bad news to learn from our leading authorities that 99 percent of the Americanpeople are decient in these minerals, and that a marked deciency in any one of themore important minerals actually results in disease. Any upset of the balance, anyconsiderable lack of one or another element, however microscopic the bodyrequirement may be, and we sicken, suffer, shorten our lives.”

Did you catch that rst statement?“… 99 percent of the American people are decient in … minerals, and … a marked

deciency in any one of the more important minerals actually results in disease.”

This was in 1936. America was just on the verge of moving to the cities in the largestperiod of urbanization ever. This is before large ag, before large pharma. Can youbelieve it? Even then our soil was in trouble. In 1936 the population was 122.7 million.Just 77 short years later it is at 313.9 million. That is over a 250% increase. Can youeven imagine the amount of food we consume now versus then.

To make matters worse an acre of land could produce about 25-30 bushels of corn inthe 1930s. Now it is hovering right at 150 bushels per acre. We pull 5 times as muchyield out of the same exact dirt.

Topsoil depletion occurs when the nutrient-rich organic topsoil, which takes hundreds tothousands of years to build up under natural conditions, is eroded or depleted of itsoriginal organic material. Historically, many past civilizations' collapses can be attributedto the depletion of the topsoil. Since the beginning of agricultural production in the GreatPlains of North America in the 1880s, about one-half of its topsoil has disappeared. Depletion may occur through a variety of other effects, including overtillage (which

damages soil structure), underuse of nutrient inputs which leads to mining of the soilnutrient bank, and salinization of soil

According to Alan Durning of the WorldWatch Institute, it costs about 35 pounds oferoded topsoil to produce one pound of feedlot steak. To replenish the lost soil, however, is not easy. Scientists believe it takes between 200 and 1,000 years to create

one inch of topsoil under natural conditions. It is estimated that the direct and indirectcosts of soil erosion in the U.S. alone exceed $44 billion a year. 1

Michael Karr, Ph.D. is an ARCPACS Certied Professional Soil Scientist. He wrote a

brilliant paper entitled, MINERAL NUTRIENT DEPLETION IN US FARMS AND RANGESOILS.

He dispels many myths including one that suggest that plants get all of the nutrientsthey need from the soil and therefore we get all of the nutrients we need by eating thoseplants. He says, “Plant absorption of mineral nutrients is dependent upon not only thepresence of the necessary mineral nutrients in the appropriate amounts but also theexistence of favorable conditions to facilitate absorption.”

See especially in the US we produce crops that are then exported or used in a waywhere the nutrients will never return to the ground from which they came. Karr says,

“The practice of removing part or all of the crops grown from the soil accelerates theloss of nutrients from the soil. The cycling of nutrients from plant uptake and release isinterrupted by crop removal. This loss, if not corrected by fertilization, must be made upby nutrient release from primary soil minerals and from soil organic matter.”

Currently there is a trend to ght against this called Permaculture: The development ofagricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufcient. It is actually quitean old idea. You or your grandparents may have lived in a more permaculture typeenvironment. For instance, my grandmother only took excess cotton and cream to townas a kid, everything else was used to sustain the family, animals and farm at large.

Below is a design for a permaculture environment at an Australian elementary school.

There is another trend called No-till farming. No-till farming (also called zero tillage ordirect planting or pasture cropping) is a way of growing crops from year to year withoutdisturbing the soil through tillage. No-till is an agricultural technique which increases theamount of water and organic matter (nutrients) in the soil and decreases erosion. Itincreases the amount and variety of life in and on the soil.

Karr says, “Heavy tillage of soils adds oxygen which accelerates the decomposition ofsoil organic matter and increases in the release of nutrient elements. In soils with highlevels of native soil humus, this "mining" of soil nutrients can occur over decades withlittle sign of soil exhaustion. Eventually, the humus content drops low enough so that itcannot supply enough nutrients to feed the crop. Nitrogen is usually the rst elementthat is affected by soil tilling. Since primary soil minerals are not reservoirs of nitrogen, fertilization with nitrogen or rotation with nitrogen xing crops (legumes) becomesnecessary early on to maintain production.”

This is why when you go and purchase fertilizer for your lawn you purchase it with

certain levels of N-P-K. N stands for nitrogen. This is why composting is so important.

He says, “In livestock operations the cycling of nutrients in the soil is also interrupted.Meat and dairy products are sold off-farm, so the organic material is not returned to thesoil. In some areas large feedlots have replaced on-farm operations. Typically in largefeedlots the manure is not returned to the farm. If the manure created is not returned tothe farm, the nutrients contained are lost.”

As you can see in the chart there is no shortage of cattle in the US. This chart does notinclude dairy cattle.

Now you might be saying, “but what about fertilizer. Don ! t farms fertilize the land?” Well

yes they do, but it may not be really helping the soil in the long run.“Soils are complex systems,” Karr says. “And this fact holds true when considering theplant availability of mineral nutrient elements. Fertilization with highly solublecommercial sources of nutrients has an effect on the plant availability of other nutrients. For example, heavy fertilization with ammonium-N may reduce potassium availability.High levels of ammonium-N or magnesium can reduce calcium availability. However, when high amounts of macronutrients are applied, often micronutrient availability isadversely affected. High applications of nitrate-N may reduce iron availability. Long termphosphorus application will reduce zinc availability and, to a lesser extent, ironavailability.”

Calcium, potassium, magnesium, and zinc are all minerals that the human bodydepends on.

Big science and big ag are failing to see the interdependence of all of the aspects of thesoil. It isn ! t that plants just take out a few things and we can spray and put them back inthe soil. Nature is much more complicated and smart.

To make matters worse, there is no real nancial incentive to x the problem. Corn issold by weight and volume not by mineral content.

Imagine if farmers had to produce mineral rich food. They couldn!

t.

Karr concludes his paper by saying, “Mineral nutrient depletion continues to be aproblem in U.S. farm, forest and range soils. This depletion is caused by naturalprocesses, such as weathering and erosion, particularly in the sensitive soils of thesoutheastern United States. More signicantly, throughout the United States, humanaccelerated depletion is caused by the production of high yield crops and livestockgrazing. Those activities cause nutrients to be removed and organic matter to bedepleted from the soil's natural cycling system. Moreover, when commercial growersattempt to replenish the soils of only some mineral nutrients by fertilization they mayexacerbate mineral nutrient imbalances. While methods exist to replenish the soil of its

mineral nutrients there is a relative lack of knowledge on how to identify all decienciesand to fully correct them. In addition, the lack of an economic incentive to implementlong term, soil-building solutions perpetuates the relative fragility and inconsistency ofUS soils' nutrient supplying power.”

The problem is not just in the US. Severe nutrient decits of N, P, and K occurred widelyin harvested areas in both developing and least developed countries, particularly in therice and wheat production systems in Asia, Central and South America, and Africa.

Continuous depletion of soil N, P, and K in most African countries and other leastdeveloped countries, coupled with low crop production levels, poses a real threat toagricultural sustainability and food security. Soil nutrient depletion caused by highproduction levels and decline in fertilizer use in recent decades in many developedcountries are also a concern. Worldwide, soil fertility problems associated with the

human-induced nutrient depletion are expected to continue.2

Let ! s dig into the actual mineral loss in say the last 2 generations.

From dirt to diet

A study by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) showing the loss ofvitamins and minerals in fruits and vegetables since 1975.

• Apples: Vitamin A is down 41%• Sweet peppers: Vitamin C is down 31%• Watercress: Iron is down 88%• Broccoli: Calcium and vitamin A are down 50%• Cauliower: Vitamin C is down 45%; vitamin B1 is down 48%; and vitamin B2 is

down 47%• Collards greens: Magnesium is down 85%

You read that right, an apple in 1975 is nearly twice as nutritious as one grown today. This is not good.

Dr. Charles Northern of Alabama was the researcher who brought this whole issue tolight back in the 1930s. It was his work that prompted the Senate document from before. Here are Dr. Northen ! s words.

"Bear in mind, that minerals are vital to human metabolism and health - and that noplant or animal can appropriate to itself any mineral which is not present in the soil uponwhich it feeds.

"When I rst made this statement I was ridiculed, for up to that time people had paidlittle attention to food deciencies and even less to soil deciencies. Men eminent inmedicine denied there was any such thing as vegetables and fruits that did not containsufcient minerals for human needs. Eminent agricultural authorities insisted that all soilcontained all necessary minerals. They reasoned that plants take what they need, andthat it is the function of the human body to appropriate what it requires. Failure to do so,they said, was a symptom of disorder.

"Some of our respected authorities even claimed that the so-called secondary mineralsplayed no part whatever in human health. It is only recently that such men as Dr.

McCollum of Johns Hopkins, Dr. Mendel of Yale, Dr. Sherman of Columbia, Dr. Lipmanof Rutgers, and Drs. H. G. Knight and Oswald Schreiner of the United StatesDepartment of Agriculture have agreed that these minerals are essential to plant, animal, and human feeding.

"We know that vitamins are complex chemical substances which are indispensable tonutrition, and that each of them is of importance for the normal function of some specialstructure in the body. Disorder and disease result from any vitamin deciency.

"It is not commonly realized, however, that vitamins control the body's appropriation ofminerals, and in the absence of minerals they have no function to perform. Lackingvitamins, the system can make some use of minerals, but lacking minerals, vitamins areuseless.

"Neither does the layman realize that there may be a pronounced difference in bothfoods and soils - to him one vegetable, one glass of milk, or one egg is about the same

as another. Dirt is dirt, too, and he assumes that by adding a little fertilizer to it, asatisfactory vegetable or fruit can be grown.

"The truth is that our foods vary enormously in value, and some of them aren't wortheating, as food. For example, vegetation grown in one part of the country may assay1,100 parts, per billion, of iodine, as against 20 in that grown elsewhere. Processed milkhas run anywhere from 362 parts, per million, of iodine and 127 of iron, down to nothing.

"Some of our lands, even in a virgin state, never were well balanced in mineral content, and unhappily for us, we have been systematically robbing the poor soils and the goodsoils alike of the very substances most necessary to health, growth, long life, and

resistance to disease. Up to the time I began experimenting, almost nothing had beendone to make good the theft.

"The more I studied nutritional problems and the effects of mineral deciencies upondisease, the more plainly I saw that here lay the most direct approach to better health, and the more important it became in my mind to nd a method of restoring thosemissing minerals to our foods.

"The subject interested me so profoundly that I retired from active medical practice andfor a good many years now I have devoted myself to it. It's a fascinating subject, for itgoes to the heart of human betterment."

The follow is a historical essential mineral depletion chart for 5 categories of foodproducts.

What is MSM?Scientically speaking Methylsulfonylmethane is an organosulfur compound with theformula (CH3)2SO2. It is also known by several other names including DMSO2, methylsulfone, and dimethyl sulfone. It is usually in the form of a powder or crystal granules. You can, however, nd it in pill form but the process of making into a pill often reducesits effectiveness to useless levels. It has a bitter taste and does not smell or look likeelemental sulfur.

Where does MSM come from?MSM is found in raw milk, organic beef, and organic fruits and veggies. If you have awell-rounded diet then you might not have a need to supplement MSM. Since it is foundnaturally in the high concentrations in Raw Milk, we recommend locating a source forthis or raising your own animals to produce this.

So you might be asking, “but how does it get into these plants and animal forms?” The

answer is rain water.MSM originates in the oceans where microscopic plankton release sulfur compoundsinto seawater. This plankton is quickly converted to DMS, a volatile sulfur compoundthat escapes into the atmosphere. In this suspended, gaseous state, the DMS reactswith ozone and ultraviolet sunlight to create DMSO and DMSO2, known as MSM. MSMthen falls to the earth with the rain, where it is collected and concentrated in plants andsubsequently animals.

You can easily see how the circle of life truly does impact each of us in this exactinstance. The trouble is that much of our food is raised in such controlled synthetic

environments that we are interrupting this healthy cycle. If you drink rain water there is not enough of it to reach your daily requirements. It isessential that you either supplement or eat the appropriate amount of MSM rich foods.

What does modern medicine think about MSM?

Webmd.com says:

MSM is a chemical found in plants, animals, and humans. It can also be made in alaboratory. People use it as a medicine.

MSM is used for chronic pain, osteoarthritis, joint inammation, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, bursitis, tendonitis, tenosynovitis, musculoskeletal pain, musclecramps, scleroderma, scar tissue, stretch marks, hair loss, wrinkles, protectionagainst sun/wind burn, eye inammation, oral hygiene, periodontal disease, wounds, cuts, and abrasions/accelerated wound healing. It is either taken by mouth orapplied to the skin for these uses. You may have heard about MSM because of the

book The Miracle of MSM: The Natural Solution for Pain. There isn ! t much publishedscientic research to support its use.

MSM is also used for relief of allergies, chronic constipation, “sour stomach,” ulcers,a bowel disease called diverticulosis, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), mood

elevation, obesity, poor circulation, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. It isalso used for type 2 diabetes, liver problems, Alzheimer ! s disease, lung disordersincluding emphysema and pneumonia, chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmunedisorders (systemic lupus erythematous), HIV infection and AIDS, and cancer(breast cancer and colon cancer).

Other uses of MSM include eye inammation, mucous membrane inammation, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems, leg cramps, migraine, headaches, hangover, parasitic infections of the intestinal and urogenital tracts includingTrichomonas vaginalis and Giardia, yeast infections, insect bites, radiationpoisoning, and to boost the immune system.

MSM is also used to control snoring. In fact, directions for making MSM nose dropsfor snoring have been published, but there ! s no evidence that MSM has any effecton snoring.

Contrary to some MSM promotional literature, there is no Recommended DietaryAllowance (RDA) for MSM or sulfur, which it contains. Sulfur deciency has not beendescribed in the medical literature.

How does it work? MSM might supply sulfur to make other chemicals in the body. 3

What does natural health medicine think about MSM?Sulfurdefense.com states:

Organic Sulfur [or MSM] is one of the most important nutrients needed by the bodythat is lacking in a majority of our foods today and in people ! s bodies. Organic Sulfurcan positively benet almost every health ailment known to man. While the mostcommon uses over the years have been for joint support, its diverse range ofbenets go way beyond that. 4

Natural medicine usesSome of the many benets of organic sulfur crystals include:

• Increasing enzyme production within bodily glands and improving resistance toillness

• Increasing exibility in muscle tissue• Increasing blood circulation• Reducing muscle inammation and promoting muscle healing• Promoting the healthy growth of hair and ngernails• Discouraging the growth of cancer cells through oxygenation

• Reversing osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease• Promoting healthy skin production and reducing wrinkles• Regulating insulin production• Improving colon function and eliminating colonic parasites 5

• Cleansing or "detoxifying" effect on the cells within the body. It allows the body toremove toxins that have accumulated in all types of cells, including fat cells.

• Increases enzyme production within the glands in the body, substantiallyincreasing overall resistance to illness.

• Increases exibility in the tissues within the body and increases blood circulation.

• Reduces muscle inammation, promotes healing in the muscles and preventsthem from becoming sore. To a degree there is soreness and recovery, but returnto normality is quickened. Athletes, in particular, benet from this as the intake ofadditional OS dramatically decreases their recovery time.

• Eliminates so-called "free radicals" in the body. Allergies to pollens and certainfoods can be reduced or eliminated by its use.

• Promotes healthy, increased growth of hair and ngernails.• Reversing of osteoporosis, Alzheimer`s disease and Parkinson`s disease.• Aids in healthy skin production and the reduction of "wrinkles". It is one of the main

ingredients in moisturizing creams.• Helps the body properly regulate insulin production. Adequate OS in the diet can

reduce the need for insulin injections.• Helps in reducing and often eliminating diverticulitis. Parasites living in the colonare unable to remain attached to the colon walls on which OS forms a smooth, resistant coating. Hatching worms, having nothing to grab on to, are ushed out.

• Helps alleviate emphysema. It provides the body with material to manufacture new, healthy cells, on lung walls.

• Causes the body to rapidly release alcohol "hangover" toxins, removing them aswaste from the body. The process happens far more rapidly than it takes to recoverfrom a hangover, often as quickly as 20 minutes.

• Helps alleviate chronic headaches. Increased circulation in the brain cellspromotes proper blood circulation within the brain. Less pressure and pain result,

reducing tendencies for headaches.• Reduces hypoglycemia in the body because it has made it easier for the body to

introduce blood sugar through more permeable cell walls. Less insulin isdemanded for the process, resulting in less overuse of the pancreas. Severalmonths of consistent OS usage can reduce or eliminate hypoglycemia entirely.

• Helps alleviate PMS. Glandular production is enhanced by OS to have more"normal" levels of production. Acid levels, enzyme levels and hormonal levels aremore evenly balanced with OS. Cramps, headaches and nausea from the monthlycycle can be reduced or eliminated through its use.

• Helps promote better kidney function more efciently. Water retention problemsdue to bad kidney function can be alleviated.

• Helps alleviate eye problems. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of sulfur crystals in 4 ounces ofwater and use as eye drops as frequently as you like. 6

I'm very happy with the results so far andwill always take sulfur now.”

How does MSM work?

Sulfur is one of the few elements that transports oxygen right into your cells. Thisprocess makes the cell walls more permeable. This is extremely important for cells assome elements need in, like oxygen, and some toxins need out, like heavy metals.

BioavailabilityIngested MSM enters almost all tissues of the body within 24 hours of its oral ingestion.

Most unused or metabolized MSM is excreted from the body within 96 hours of itsingestion (although some MSM remains in the body for up to 400 hours (16 days) afterits ingestion.

MSM is excreted from the body primarily via the Urine. Lesser amounts are excreted via

Saliva, exhaled air and Perspiration.

Are MSM and Organic Sulfur the same thing?

Yes and no. The answer really comes down to how it is made. MSM can either be madevia distillation or crystallization.

Even Dr Mercola weighs in on the issue of distilled vs crystalized.

For MSM, distillation is by far superior. But crystallization is less expensive, and a lotless energy-intensive. According to Mr. Benjamin, only two companies that produceMSM use distillation. Mr. Benjamin explains why you should consider a product thathas been puried using distillation.

“A lot of the problems with [crystallization] is you ! re essentially crystallizing it out of aparent solvent or liquid. If there are any impurities, which could be salts of heavy

metals, you could have aromatic hydrocarbons in that… It ! s actually the parentsolvent. It ! s usually water. It is dependent upon water quality.” 7

We choose to use the term Organic Sulfur as MSM can indicate anything that ischemically Methylsulfonylmethane regardless of how it is made. Organic sulfur either

comes from plants and animals or from a high-quality distilled source.

How does it work? DMSO helps medicines get through the skin and can affect proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and water in the body. 8

Modern medicinal usesThe medical community says it is:Effective for:

• Bladder infections (interstitial cystitis) when used as an FDA-approved product.

Possibly Effective for:• Decreasing nerve pain caused by the herpes zoster virus (shingles) when used

with a drug called idoxuridine.• Inammatory bladder disease.• Treating skin and tissue damage caused by chemotherapy when it leaks from the

IV.

Medical Studies on DMSO

Study Name:Dimethyl sulfoxide in treatment of inammatory genitourinary disorders.Shirley SW, Stewart BH, Mirelman S.

Study Findings:Intravesical dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been used in the treatment of 213patients with various inflammatory conditions involving the lower genitourinary

tract, including intractable interstitial cystitis, radiation cystitis, chronic prostatitis, and chronic female trigonitis. Significant symptomatic relief has been achieved inthe majority of patients so treated, and no systemic or local toxicity has beennoted.

There are some 2000+ studies involving DMSO. It ! s benets and risks are still not fullyunderstood.

What does natural health medicine think of DMSO?Earthclinic.com says:

DMSO has been associated with a number of therapeutic benets, such as for thehealing of wounds; its use as an anti-inammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti- fungal; softens collagen, helps eliminate hydroxyl free radicals in the body, stimulates the immune system, increases interferon formation, reduces the number

Impact #1: Cell healthThe human body has roughly 10 trillion cells. This article from Sciencedaily.comexplains why each cell needs oxygen.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have discovered how cells fine-tune theiroxygen use to make do with whatever amount is available at the moment.

Too little oxygen threatens life by compromising mitochondria that power it, sowhen oxygen is scarce, cells appear to adjust by replacing one protein with anenergy-efficient substitute that "is specialized to keep the motor runningsmoothly even as it begins to run out of gas," says Gregg Semenza, M.D.,Ph.D., a professor of pediatrics and director of the vascular biology program inthe Institute for Cell Engineering at Hopkins. "This is one way that cellsmaintain energy production under less than ideal conditions." A report on thework is in the April 6 issue of Cell.

"Cells require a constant supply of oxygen," Semenza says, "so it's vital forthem to quickly react to slight changes in oxygen levels." The protein-swap ishow they do it.

In the mitochondria, the tiny powerhouses found in every cell, energy is produced by passing electrons through a series of relay stations calledcytochromes until they eventually join with oxygen to form water. This finalstep is directed by the protein cytochrome coxidase, or COX for short. If

electrons react with oxygen before reaching COX, they generate "freeradicals" that can damage or destroy cells. The mitochondria are designed to

produce energy without excess free radical production at normal oxygenlevels. 10

In short this means that if our cells don’t get enough oxygen then they begin tomalfunction producing free radicals. Did you catch that second sentence? “ Toolittle oxygen threatens life.” While this may seem intuitive, we tend to think that ifwe are breathing then we are getting enough oxygen. Getting air into your lungssafely is task #1. From there the lungs transport it into your blood stream and

then into your 10 trillion cells. If your cells aren’t healthy or can receive theoxygen you will basically be suffocating your body at the most basic andelemental level.

Casinos in Vegas are notorious for pumping pure oxygen onto the casino floorsas it helps people feel alive and awake. We need oxygen.

So how does sulfur fit into this? Well remember that sulfur is one of the fewmacro-minerals that transports oxygen right into the cell. It also makes each cellwall more permeable for other nutrients.

Hypoxia, or hypoxiation, is a pathological condition in which the body as a whole(generalized hypoxia) or a region of the body (tissue hypoxia, or less commonlyregional hypoxia) is deprived of adequate oxygen supply. Variations in arterialoxygen concentrations can be part of the normal physiology, for example, duringstrenuous physical exercise. A mismatch between oxygen supply and its demandat the cellular level may result in a hypoxic condition.

The signs and symptoms of hypoxia can vary between different people, and byhow long the symptoms have been present. Some of them include:

• Dizzyness or fainting (syncope)

• Shortness of breath (dyspnea)• Confusion, lethargy, and/or lack of judgment• Headache• Rapid heart rate (tachycardia)• Elevated respiratory rate (tachypnea)• Euphoria and a sense of well-being• Tingling, warm sensations

Lethargy is a feeling of weariness, tiredness, or lack of energy.

We know that many millions of people lack energy. Could it be something sosimple as lack of oxygen? The more oxygen you have in your cells the more aliveyou feel.

Impact #2: MicrooraIn the late 17th century, a Dutch lens grinder lens grinder named Anton vanLeeuwenhoek noticed a layer of white scum between his teeth. He mixed someof that gunk with rainwater and then placed it in his microscope. "I found, to mygreat surprise," he wrote, "that it contained many small animalcules, the motionsof which were very pleasing to behold."

What he was beholding was part of his microbiome, the trillions of microbial cellsthat cover the inside and outside of the human body.

It is only recently that science is learning to understand and appreciate thiscomplex ecosystem.

In fact, and it should serve as no surprise to you, the government has launchedan investigative project called the Human Microbiome Project.

The results of this project, quite possibly, could change the face andunderstanding of medicine.

The New York Times reports:

The work is "fantastic," said Bonnie Bassler, a Princeton University microbiologistwho was not involved with the project. "These papers represent significant stepsin our understanding of bacteria in human health."

Until recently, Dr. Bassler added, the bacteria in the microbiome were thought tobe just "passive riders." They were barely studied, microbiologists explained, because it was hard to know much about them. They are so adapted to living on

body surfaces and in body cavities, surrounded by other bacteria, that manycould not be cultured and grown in the lab. Even if they did survive in the lab, they often behaved differently in this alien environment. It was only with theadvent of relatively cheap and fast gene sequencing methods that investigatorswere able to ask what bacteria were present.

You might be saying to yourself, "Where do these microbial come from?"

The microbiome starts to grow at birth, said Lita Proctor, program director for theHuman Microbiome Project. As babies pass through the birth canal, they pick up

bacteria from the mother's vaginal microbiome.

Babies born by Caesarean section, Dr. Proctor added, start out with differentmicrobiomes, but it is not yet known whether their microbiomes remain differentafter they mature. In adults, the body carries two to five pounds of bacteria, eventhough these cells are minuscule - one-tenth to one-hundredth the size of ahuman cell. The gut, in particular, is stuffed with them.

"The gut is not jam-packed with food; it is jam-packed with microbes," Dr. Proctorsaid. "Half of your stool is not leftover food. It is microbial biomass." But bacteria

multiply so quickly that they replenish their numbers as fast as they are excreted. We know that many of you from Voice of Eden deal with, or have dealt with, various health issues. We believe it to be critical that you understand this part ofyour body's function that could explain some of your health concerns and evenaid in your recovery.

Not only do the bacteria help keep people healthy, but they also are thought tohelp explain why individuals react differently to various drugs and why some aresusceptible to certain infectious diseases while others are impervious. When theygo awry they are thought to contribute to chronic diseases and conditions likeirritable bowel syndrome, asthma, even, possibly, obesity.

Wired magazine reported in 2011:We're just beginning to learn the effects our microbiome has on us, but it's clearthat they can be profound. Certain species help digest food and synthesizevitamins; others guide the immune system. Medical researchers have linkedobesity, heart disease, and anxiety to properties of the microbiome. In manycases, it's not the individual species that seem to matter but the richness of theecosystem. Just as the health of a forest depends upon diversity, our own healthappears to benefit from the presence of a wide range of uninvited guests, manyof which co-evolved with us.

The phrase that you must familiarize yourself with is "flora" especially "gut flora."

John C Hammel of International Advocates for Health Freedom says:

It's important to have more of the beneficial gut flora because they worksymbiotically with our enterocytes to produce vitamins (like B1, B2, B3, B5, B6),K2, enzymes, neurotransmitters, antibiotics, and so on. In other words, ideally wehave our very own biochemical factory that synthesizes the substances ourbodies need to help keep our immune system intact and our moods balanced.

Unfortunately, the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and the types of personalhygiene products and pharmaceutical medications we've taken also affects thehealth of our microbiome. Most often, there's an imbalance that allowsopportunistic flora to overwhelm the beneficial gut flora, thereby causing disease.

A critical factor to maintaining a healthy gut is having healthy cells that processoxygen, their most basic need.

"One of the best ways to oxygenate your cells, alkalize your blood and removetoxins that can lead to cellular malfunction is to take organic sulfur. Sulfur lets

oxygen in by increasing the permeability of cell membranes, and takes out thetrash! Sulfur, in the form of sulphates, plays an essential role in cellulardetoxification and the normal metabolism of brain neurotransmitters."

So microflora is part of your gut flora. More sulfur = more oxygen = happier gutflora.

Impact #3: Insulin productionInsulin is a protein chain. It includes an alpha side and a beta side and those twosides are bonded via sulfur molecules.

11

MSM is 34% elemental sulfur by weight.

• Insulin facilitates entry of glucose into muscle, adipose and several other tissues.• Insulin stimulates the liver to store glucose in the form of glycogen• Insulin decreases the concentration of glucose in blood.• Insulin promotes synthesis of fatty acids in the liver.• Insulin inhibits breakdown of fat in adipose tissue.• Most notably, people with diabetes have an imbalance of how their body creates,

regulates and uses insulin.

Impact #4: Radiation prevention and recovery

The body uses sulfur to create the amino acids methionine, cysteine and taurine. Eachof these protect against radiation such as UV-A and UV-B and radiation from chemotreatments.

UV radiation impairs peptide methionine sulfoxide reductase. This protein is ubiquitousand highly conserved. It carries out the enzymatic reduction of methionine sulfoxide to

methionine. Human and animal studies have shown the highest levels of expression inkidney and liver. Its proposed function is the repair of oxidative damage to proteins torestore biological activity.

In other words, UV radiation damages the production of methionine and sulfur repairs it.

It isn ! t that sulfur makes you radiation immune any more than 1 glass of water preventsdehydration. It does mean that your body uses sulfur to maintain proper health andevents like radiation exposure, be it sun or otherwise, damage your health.

Both cysteine and taurine, amino acids produces with sulfur, protect against radiationthough modern science is not yet clears as to why. There are several clinical studiesshowing this property though all of them state that more studies are necessary.

In short, increasing the sulfur in your body increases your likelihood to protect againstand recover from UV and X-ray radiation exposure.

Impact #5: Slowing the Aging Process in Skin

The body ! s content of MSM declines in tandem with the progression of the AgingProcess. MSM inhibits the cross-linking of the body ! s collagen (cross-linking of collagenis a major aspect of the aging process). Your body uses sulfur to create collagen. Thisbrous protein is what makes baby skin look young and elderly skin look old. Want tolook young? Take more sulfur to increase your collagen production.

Impact #6: Cardiovascular System Health

MSM improves blood circulation by dilating the blood vessels. A similar effect can befound by consuming raw ginger. Many Americans take either antihistamine for allergiesor consume caffeine for energy. Both of these are vasoconstrictors. They make theblood vessels smaller in diameter thereby restricting blood ow. Currently 54% ofAmericans admit to drinking coffee daily. This does not include tea or other energydrinks. That is over 150 million people in America alone with daily constricted vessels.

Impact #7: Detoxication

Sulfur is extremely important component of Glutathione, the amino acid integral inphase 2 liver detoxication enzymes. Adequate levels of this sulfur-based amino acidare necessary for the liver to perform its detoxication role. Supplementation with MSMmay promote improved liver detoxication. 12

Impact #8: Digestive System Health

MSM can be taken to alleviate Constipation (especially Constipation in elderly persons).

MSM prevents intestinal parasites from adhering to the gastrointestinal tract. “MSM mayaffect such infections by competing for binding or receptor site as at the mucousmembrane surface presenting a blocking interface between host and parasite.” 13

Consequently MSM has proven effective against Giardia lambia (traveler ! s diarrhea),Trichomonas vaginalis, Nematodes, Enterobius and other intestinal worms.

Impact #9: Eyes/Vision Health

Other than oral supplement, MSM eye drops are probably the most available form of iton the market.

Dr. Earl Mindell, author of several natural health books, reports the following in a sectioncalled THE EYES:

“Think of your eyeball as a balloon full of water, but instead of being rubber, it is aprotein membrane. Optical tissue normally allows uids to ow through themembrane wall which acts like a lter, cleaning out harmful particles, keeping youreyes clear and your vision good as it allows nutrients to permeate. But should themembranes become tough like leather, the uids are trapped and particles begin toaccumulate. If this buildup continues, your vision will seem as if you're lookingthrough frosted glass, a condition known as cataracts.

When eyedrops containing the proper amount of MSM are applied, the membranebecomes permeable, and this has reversed the problem. It is also important that theeye remain exible so that the muscles can alter its contour and focus as needed. Inthe event that its membranes and muscles become rigid and tough, the eye will notbe able to focus properly, resulting in blurred vision. The MSM in eyedrops soothesand softens the membranes, permitting uids to pass through the optical tissues tostabilize the pressure, repair any damage, clear up red spots and bloodshot vessels, and remove oaters and other particles in the eye.

In one case, a 15 percent solution of MSM in isotonic saline was a soothing

treatment for the eye following accidental injury due to particulate matter in the eye.In a test with an irritated eye of a rabbit, the eye cleared when treated every hourwith a 10 percent aqueous solution of MSM. Be assured, the concentration in theMSM eye drops you get will be sufcient. Follow the instructions on the label.

As noted earlier, the B vitamins in general and the sulfur-related amino acids and

compounds are vital to maintaining healthy eyes. Specically, we've learned thatglucosamine is the starting material for the eyes, that glutathione promotes good eyehealth and low levels accompany almost every type of eye disease. We also knowthat people suffering from the eye disease retinitis pigmentosa show reduced levelsof taurine within the eye."

Impact #10: Metabolism

MSM reduces the toxic accumulation of lactic acid following exercise. Stephen M. Roth,a professor in the department of kinesiology at the University of Maryland, explains,“Contrary to popular opinion, lactate or, as it is often called, lactic acid buildup is notresponsible for the muscle soreness felt in the days following strenuous exercise.Rather, the production of lactate and other metabolites during extreme exertion resultsin the burning sensation often felt in active muscles, though which exact metabolites areinvolved remains unclear. This often painful sensation also gets us to stop overworkingthe body, thus forcing a recovery period in which the body clears the lactate and othermetabolites.” 14 MSM has been used for years to alleviate this pain in racing horses.

Impact #11: Musculoskeletal System Health

There have been countless studies of MSM and Ostreoarthritis. One study had theseresults: 16 patients with osteoarthritis aged 55 to 78 were assigned to two groups. Onegroup of ten patients received 2,250 mg of MSM per day. The other group of six patientsreceived a placebo. All drugs and other nutritional supplements were ceased before thecommencement of the study. After four weeks of treatment, 60% of MSM-receivingpatients experienced improvement in their symptoms. After six weeks, 82% of patients

experienced improvement.15

Our staff have all used Real Time Pain Relief which is a topical MSM cream. The resultsare almost immediate as MSM is so quick to penetrate the skin to the problem area. For more info on Real Time Pain Relief visit: http://rtpr.com/site/33f1c368 .

MSM and Aloe Vera Gel Lotion

The easiest recipe is to combine MSM with Pure Aloe Vera gel. Keep in mind that 3rounded teaspoons of MSM Crystal Flakes is about 15 grams of MSM.

What you will need:

• MSM Crystal Flakes – 15 grams for every 100 mls of Aloe Vera Gel• Pure Aloe Vera Gel – 100 mls (or more if you want to make more)

Process:

• Mix 3 rounded teaspoons of MSM for ever 100 mls of pure Aloe Vera gel in a bowl.• Mix it well and let it sit for about 30 minutes so the MSM akes dissolve into the

Aloe Vera gel.• Don ! t add more MSM than the amount stated as it will become saturated and go

clumpy.• Pour the mixture into a suitable container (an old washed out cream tub is good).• Use it as frequently as you feel is necessary.

Please note that a 3.5 uid ounce tube of Aloe Vera gel is about 100 mls. Just look forpure Aloe Vera gel with no other ingredients in it at your local drug store.

MSM (administered orally) may also facilitate hair and nail growth

Brand Awareness

Mother nature

The best brand is always mother nature. MSM is best consumed naturally and raw. Rawmilk has the highest concentration; however, it is hard to nd. As of Jan. 2013, the saleof raw milk in stores is legal in 12 states. 17 states only permit raw milk sales on farms;4 states only allow raw milk acquisition through "cow-share" agreements; and in 17other states all sales of raw milk are prohibited.

12 states allow the sale of raw milk in retail stores11 states allow raw milk to be sold in any retail store: Arizona, California, Connecticut,Idaho, Maine, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Washington

1 state requires that the store be owned by the producer of the milk: Utah17 states allow on-farm sales of raw milk2 states allow on-farm sales of raw milk as well as delivery of raw milk directly from thefarm to consumers, including sales at farmers' markets: South Dakota and Missouri

• Pumpkin seeds• Bee pollen (the most complete food on the planet)• Blue-green algae• Spirulina• Maca

Powder/Crystal

We have tested dozen of powders and crystals of MSM on the market. Few stand up tothe crystal test. This is where you take some of the powder and add water and leave itin a glass to evaporate. Upon evaporate large beautiful crystals should grow. Mostbrands grew little to no crystals. We recommend Gold Standard Organic Sulfur found athttp://www.h2oairwateramericas.com .

Pills

All of the pills we tested showed little to no benet. The process of making a pill andthen shipping and storing it with silica powder renders it nearly useless. We recommendavoiding all solid pills of MSM. This includes nearly every brand that you would nd at ahealth food store.
