Now that Easter is moving towards the Ascension and Pentecost we have celebra ons that involve our children and young people especially. First Holy Communions took place last week with 132 children and young people receiving the Sacrament of the Lord’s Body and Blood in the Eucharist. Congratula ons to everyone who celebrat-ed this beau ful sacrament, to their parents and all who have supported them on the journey. A special thanks to Mr. Larry La Grasta and Ms. Elena Zavala with their vol-unteer staff in our Religious Educa on Department, and to Mrs. Wanda King and her teachers at the Parish School. It was a joyful and prayerful celebra on and such a blessing for our parish. Our next celebra on for young people is the Liturgy of Confirma on on June 3, at 6:00 pm. Because Bishop Cirilo has been ill and is recovering, Fr. David, our Pastor, will administer the Sacrament of Confirma on this year to 61 young men and women. They have prepared well over two years and have had outstanding support from their teachers and mentors at the parish. On behalf of everyone I want to offer a huge ‘thank you’ to Laura Chun, Chris ne Howieson, Ana Gonzalez, Rick Lewis, Juan Hernandez and Virginia Ambriz who have been their teachers and who have done a splendid job. Thanks also to Be y and Andy Domingo, Veronica Duenas, John Gon-zales, Pat Sheehan, Lani Paulo, Maui Pasefika, Sharon Montano, Mario Mar nez and Art Hernandez who have been on hand in all kinds of capaci es during the retreat and during the monthly workshops. A par cular word of thanks to Margi Arguello and Ma Franklin who were also instrumental in preparing our young parishioners for the Sacrament of Confirma on and to our Youth Leader-ship who cheered them on at every step. In these final days of prepara on I invite you to pray for our young people that they open their hearts to the Lord and re-ceive the gi s of the Holy Spirit with enthusiasm and joy. Over on the ‘other side’ at the Mission and in the Fri-ary we are delighted to welcome in the next few weeks and months new members of our Franciscan Fraternity. They are Brothers Vincent (Vietnam), Samuel (Indonesia), Edgardo (Costa Rica), Phillip (Apache Na on, Arizona) and Louis from Jordan. Br. Edgardo is a member of the Province of the Holy Name on the East Coast while all the others belong to the Province of St. Barbara. These brothers will be students at the Franciscan School of The-ology at Old Mission San Luis Rey beginning in the Fall Semester. We also welcome Br. Timothy Arthur, OFM, from Mission Santa Barbara. Br. Timothy has been for many years the Archivist of the Province and we are

blessed to have him with us here at San Luis Rey. He is a veritable font of knowledge and wisdom about all things Franciscan in the Province of St. Barbara and is a wonder-ful storyteller. Later in September we will also welcome Fr. Mathias Tumelty, OFM, to our fraternity. Fr. Mathias has been in Arizona working with migrants these last three or four years. On placement at the Mission/Parish in the summer we will welcome Brothers Zeno Im, OFM, and Jeffrey Durham, OFM. Fr. Luis has asked me to express to you his gra tude for your prayers during his mother’s recent illness. She has recovered from her surgery in Victoria, Mexico and is doing well. The Parish will hold a Vigil for Pentecost on Saturday, June 7, from 9:00 pm to 12:00 Midnight in the Serra Cen-ter. Prayers, Scripture and Sacred Song will be in both English and Spanish and all are invited to come and pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our Parish and on the whole Church. Pope Francis goes to the Holy Land this weekend as a pilgrim. Please pray for his safety and for the people of that part of the world. His trip commemorates the fa-mous mee ng between Paul VI and Patriarch Athe-nagoras of Constan nople. They embraced as brothers a er a bi erness that had lasted almost a thousand years between the Churches of the East and West. Pope Francis will meet Patriarch Bartholomew of Constan no-ple in Jerusalem and renew the fraternal bonds between the successors of St. Peter and St. Andrew. What won-derful mes we live in when mercy, forgiveness and heal-ing are modeled for us by our religious leaders, and par-

cularly by the Holy Father, Pope Francis. Pray for him.

Wishing you the con nued blessings of Easter! Fr. Adrian.

Sisters of the Precious Blood Sister Gladys Marie Lowe, CPPS,

is turning 100!!

Just a few years ago, Mission San Luis Rey Parish was proud to host the 175th Anniversary of the Sisters of the Precious Blood. In 1913, these vibrant women founded schools in San Bernardino County and here at our own Parish. Many of our parishioners and even teachers at our Old Mission Montessori School are graduates of that original school, the San Luis Rey Academy which the sisters staffed. One of those sisters, Sister Gladys Marie Lowe, CPPS, was at San Luis Rey Convent for twenty years, from 1974 to 1994 and earlier than 1974 for one year. Many at OMMS will remember that she founded the Sister Gladys Rummage Sale for Christmas in July. You might also like to know that our Day Care building was named for her a er her many years of service to our children there. Remem-bering her service to us, Sister says “I thought I was at San Luis Rey forever because I got more joy out of my work there than anywhere.” Let’s return a li le of that joy to our Sister in Christ! Sister Gladys is celebra ng her 100th birthday on May 30th. The Sisters of Precious Blood are having a special celebra-

on for her on Sunday, June 1st back in Dayton Ohio. And you’re invited to par cipate by sending Sister Gladys a birthday card! Here is the address: Sister Gladys Lowe, CPPS 4960 Salem Avenue, Dayton, OH 45416

Padre Adrian
