NEPAL EARTHQUAKE
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal the morning of April 25 just 50 miles northwest of the capital, Kath-mandu, toppling buildings and homes, causing wide-spread panic, and claiming more than 3,900 lives. The devasta on and toll on human life is s ll becoming clear as rescue workers access the affected areas and people. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has already begun to em-bark on a major emergency response to this severe disas-ter and has commi ed funds to extended relief efforts. CRS is providing 10,000 families (50,000 people) with emergency shelter materials, blankets, water treatment and hygiene kits. Given the scale of the disaster, the agency expects to expand relief ac vi es to addi onal families. CRS is working with Caritas Nepal to iden fy the most pressing needs in the hardest hit districts between Kathmandu and Pokhara, and will scale its opera ons accordingly. Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, Archbishop of Louis-ville and President of United States Conference of Catho-lic Bishops, has asked his brother bishops to take up a second collec on, which our parish will do so this week-end. These funds will be used to support the efforts of CRS as they respond to immediate emergency needs for such necessi es as water, food, shelter and medical care as well as the long-term needs to rebuild the communi-
es in the regions affected a er widespread destruc on. If you missed the opportunity to par cipate in this collec on, please donate via check to: Catholic Relief Ser-vices, “Nepal Earthquake” wri en in the memo and mail to: P.O. Box 17090 Bal more, MD 21203-7090 or go online at www.crs.org.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
