A NOTE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT OF PARADISE VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Paradise Valley Unified School District is honored to host the 13th Annual MSAN Student Conference. We congratulate you on being selected to Discover Your Voice and Embrace the Journey towards overcoming obstacles and achieving success. As you network and collaborate with other minority leaders from around the country, know that your mission does not end when you head for home. It is just the beginning as you take your action plans to your home schools and share them with the broader student community. We believe the leadership skills and strategies honed at this year’s conference will allow you to shape the future of academic success for yourself and your classmates. We hope you enjoy our southwestern hospitality, scenic mountain views and ample sunshine. We also know you will accept The Grand Challenge to motivate your peers to set rigorous goals for academic success in high school and beyond. Thank you again for your inspiring work.

Sincerely, Dr. James P. Lee, Vice President - MSAN Governing Board, Superintendent, Paradise Valley Unified School District

WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT OF MSAN

Dear Students:

On behalf of my superintendent colleagues from our MSAN districts, I want to congratulate and thank you for your participation in the 2012 MSAN Student Conference. The theme

for this conference challenges you to find your voice and embrace the journey of leadership and change. Your voice and your leadership is vitally important to help us transform your schools so that issues of social justice, including eliminating racial achievement gaps, are addressed in your schools and our districts. We all agree that the MSAN Student Conference is one of our more important endeavors – providing the opportunity for you to come together to collaborate is a central aim of our organization.

I know that each superintendent will be excited to see the action plans that you will develop for implementation at your schools, to hear about the speakers and activities that will take place during this conference, and to learn more about how we can push for equity in your schools and throughout this network.

Have a great time, meet new people, find your voice, and continue to make us proud!

Sincerely,

Susan H. Zurvalec President - MSAN Governing BoardSuperintendentFarmington Public Schools

WELCOME FROM THE MSAN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Hello MSAN Scholars and welcome to the 13th Annual MSAN Student Conference! One of the best parts of my job as Executive Director of MSAN is to spend time each year with student leaders from across our MSAN districts. MSAN students and other school leaders here in Paradise Valley have planned a full agenda for you over the next few days including campus tours, spending

time with transformational guest speakers, engaging in reflective activities, and having a large amount of fun. But the core of the annual student conference is the development of your school/district-based MSAN action plan.

Since our first gathering in 2000, the Annual MSAN Student Conference has been bringing together high achieving student leaders from network high schools who have offered important insights into understanding and eliminating the academic barriers students of color face in their schools. Each year since, students just like you have gathered to learn from their peers from across the country and strategize about how to make school a more meaningful place. You will spend the next few days:

• engaging in discussions about barriers students of color face in your schools,• networking with some of the brightest and strongest student leaders from

across the country to craft solutions and strategies to eliminate these barriers,• sharing your ideas about how to motivate students to succeed, and• developing plans of action to implement these strategies for change and

preparing to report these valuable messages to the academic leaders in your schools and districts.

This year’s conference theme sets the bar high for you. “The Grand Challenge: Discover your Voice. Embrace the Journey.” YOU have accepted “The Grand Challenge” by joining the MSAN students who have come before you to inspire and motivate future generations. YOU are showing the world how to “Discover Your Voice” by developing plans of action to change your schools. And YOU show all of us how to “Embrace the Journey.” I am honored to be along for the ride.

Dr. Madeline M. HafnerMSAN Executive Director

The Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN) is a national coalition of multiracial, suburban-urban school districts that have come together to understand and eliminate the racial achievement gaps that exist in their districts. Since 1999, MSAN has worked fervently to achieve the parallel goals of eliminating achievement gaps while ensuring all students achieve to high levels. To this end, MSAN districts work collaboratively to conduct and publish research, analyze policies, and examine practices that influence the academic performance of students of color.
