The Amulet: Plot

• Preface: Avia is introduced, a magical bird land in the Southern mountains. It is under threat from the expansionist intentions of the villain, a vulture, Great Griffon soaring above

Chapter 1 To catch a Thief

• introduces Torquil, a South American toucan and reluctant hero

• Miranda , a lap cat and villainess, whose murderous tendencies must be kept in check by the magical powers of the Amulet

• Pom Pom an over enthusiastic dog who likes chasing things• Pye a magpie who likes brightly coloured objects

and is a thief. Pye steals the Amulet• And trades it with Torquil for food.

Chapter 2: Accident at Great Pond

• Torquil joins the other birds in an evensong at the village pond at dusk. He wears the Amulet

• There is a concert of frogs,grasshoppers and a Nightingale and an audience of birds

• Pompom the Dog disturbs the peace, causing an accident

• An elm tree branch breaks, and Torquil,

who cant fly or swim ends up in the water. • The Amulet is lost, carried off to Griffonland

Chapter 3 The Bird Council

• Miranda, no longer held in check by The Amulet is raiding the shrubbery and killing the birds

• The Bird Council meets to discuss the crisis. It consists of Papa Heron, Russet Hen , a female Owl and numerous ducks, sparrows, swallows, hens and blackbirds

• Torquil is tasked to ride on Pompom’s back

to Griffonland with Wren, a very small female bird as guide, to rescue the Amulet.

Chapter Four: The Journey

• The Trio set out up the foothills towards Griffonland where Great Griffon’s Castle is located.

• Half way up the hill Pompom disappears off to chase a hare.

• Torquil and Wren stop for lunch at a waterfall. Suddenly Great Griffon descends out of the sky and seizes Torquil’s ketchup daubed sandwich

Chapter Five: Pompom and The Hare

• On the Moor, Pompom is distracted by The Hare which he leaves the others to

chase but he can never catch it. • To his horror , at some point in the chase

the roles are reversed. It gets dark, this only increasing Pompom’s anxiety

• Eventually, pompom collapses exhausted, and the magic hare leaps towards the full moon, appearing to grow wings.

Chapter Six: The Drummer

• Reunited in the morning, the trio enter Listening Wood, a strange petrified forest where sound is amplified

• They encounter Boku, a female Monkey, who is a poacher She scarpers when the hear a drum in the distance

• It is The Hare who is a recruiter for Great Griffon’s army. Hare mesmerises the woodland animals –rats, weasels, starlings, pigeons and mice into following him through the Gate into Griffonland.

Chapter Seven: Griffonland

• The Trio cross a chasm and offer their safe conduct passes to the border guard, a Weasel

• They struggle up to the top of the hill in the mist • At the very top, Great Griffon’s rock cut castle

is built in a crater. It is crammed with Starlings, Rats, Night herons, Weasels, Pigeons and Geese. They are gate crashing a special event.

• Great Griffon is crowning Miranda the Queen of Avia and making her a vassal

Chapter Eight : Inside Griffon Keep

• Pye is hoarding treasure for Great Griffon to gloat over• Pompom, overcome with excitement at the sight of

Miranda plunges down in to their midst, gets captured and is imprisoned in the castle.

• Wren uses the siesta time to fly undetected into the castle. She finds Pye offering Great Griffon the Amulet in the treasure room. The vulture is gloating over the prize of Avia.

• Wren manages to retrieve The Amulet and rescue Pompom from the dungeon.

Chapter Nine: Pye’s Hospitality

• The Trio descend back down the hill but get lost in a spooky Rhodedendron Forest and get stopped by Jay.

• A hay cart appears driven by Rats and Starlings. • On top of it is Pye who invites Torquil up into his glitter

strewn tree house• Pye’s hungry family demolish everything in Torquil’s

napsack • Torquil has to swallow the Amulet to prevent its

discovery, and gets the hiccups, while waiting for the magpie family to fall asleep

Chapter Ten: The Seashore

• Boku appears in Pye’s tree and rescues Torquil. They race through the forest towards Griffonland’s Nethergate and catch up with Pompom and Wren.

• They are pursued by an army of Starlings, Rats riding Geese, Weasels etc. All four jump or fly over the gate and land on The Shoreline.

• Torquil passes out and is soon surrounded by Clockwork Birds and Dr Claw , a crab who offers to operate on Torquil’s distended stomach

• Shocked, Torquil sicks up the Amulet immediately• Great Griffon plunges out of the sky to seize The Amulet

but misses and ends up being bitten on the leg by Dr Claw’s pincers

Chapter Eleven : Listening Wood

• On the return journey through Listening Wood, the foursome encounter a round tower with a big chimney

• Here they find Crow Woman , a figure who is half woman, half crow . She keeps jackdaws, and they are surprised to find Miranda in the tower.Torquil tries to return the Amulet to Miranda but realises something is wrong.

• He escapes up the chimney and flies down from the top,thus rediscovering the ability to fly

• Pompom and Boku scare off Crow Woman and Miranda

Chapter Twelve: Homecoming

• Torquil, Pompom and Wren returned to Avia in triumph with the Amulet, which was hidden to await Miranda’s return

• Great Griffon lost his power after his injury and his castle fell into disrepair

• Miranda never came back to Avia, she

went wild, living in the ruins of Griffon Castle • Boku and her offspring took over Listening Wood and

renamed it Monkey wood • Pye continued as an occasional thief of bright objects
