Matawan Regional High School Race, Class, & Gender This half-year elective course gives students a sociological study of race, class, and gender through the analysis of various stereotypes as well as the lived experiences of individuals. Students will explore the concept of intersectionality- simultaneous membership in various identity groups as well as socioeconomic classes. Current events will be infused through the curriculum as students explore the historical roots of inequalities in various American and global minority groups. Civic Leadership Open to all junior students, this course is a half-year elective where students explore the foundations of civic leadership through self- reflexive activities and analyze the actions and values of both historical and contemporary leaders. This course will supply potential civic leaders with the foundation of theoretical practices as students develop their own understanding of effective leadership techniques. This course is a prerequisite for Civic Leadership II: Senior Apprenticeship.

Race, Class, & Gender

Civic Leadership

Open to all junior students, thiscourse is a half-year elective wherestudents explore the foundationsof civic leadership through self-reflexive activities and analyze theactions and values of bothhistorical and contemporaryleaders. This course will supplypotential civic leaders with thefoundation of theoretical practicesas students develop their ownunderstanding of effectiveleadership techniques. This courseis a prerequisite for CivicLeadership II: SeniorApprenticeship.

Sociology

This course is a half year electivewhich utilizes inquiry techniquesto explore the types of sociologicalproblems, the complexity of sociallife, and the methods ofsociological problem solving. Afocus will be placed onsocialization, institutions, socialstratification, as well as socialchange.

Psychology

Open to grades 11th & 12th.Psychology is the study of humanbehavior and mental processes. This course examines topics suchas personality theories, memoryand thought, altered state ofawareness, sleep and dreams, theworking of the brain and nervoussystem, learning theories, stressrelated topics such as anxietydisorders and psychotic disorders. By providing insights into humanbehavior, the students will have abetter understanding ofthemselves and/ or others aroundthem. (NCAA)

Economics 1

Open to grades 9th-12th. Thiscourse is an introductoryeconomics theory course. Usingthe textbook and outside readings,the course emphasizes readingand writing skills as well asanalytical techniques related tosocio-economic problems such asscarcity, market pric ing, businessorganization and operations, andstock market operations. Economics 2

Open to grades 9th-12th. Basedupon the tools of analysisdeveloped in Economics I, thiscourse uses current readings toapply problem solving techniquesto specific economic issues such astaxation, income redistribution,money and banking, governmentstabilization policy, and selectedissues of the times. Criminal Law &Juvenile Justice

Open to grades 11th & 12th. This isan introduction to the Americanlegal system as it applies toindividual citizens and juveniles. This course provides opportunitiesfor students to develop theknowledge and skills necessary tolive in our society. The course willinclude case studies, small groupexercises and visual analysisactivities. This course will promotea willingness and capability toparticipate effectively in the legaland political systems. (NCAA)

Career Empowerment

This course will begin by allowingstudents to understandthemselves, evaluate theirinterests and explore theirpersonal passions. Students willlearn study and organizationalskills and techniques along with21st century technology skillsincluding, but not limited to,spreadsheets, databases, andstatistical analysis. Students willwrite resumes and practiceinterviewing. Financial literacy willbe explored from both a personaland small business perspective.

Entrepreneurship

Leading a team or project is notthe same as leading an entireorganization. In this course youwill learn what the boss is reallydoing when they are in their office! Students will “purchase” a realbusiness that is for sale in a “SharkTank” fashion, then advancethrough a series of projects as ifthey were actually running thatbusiness. This will includedecisions on advertising, hiring,how to keep the books, rules of theworkplace, and many otherdecisions that “don’t makethemselves” – they will be made byyou, the student/leader. By the endof the semester, students will havea much better idea of whether ornot they may someday become anentrepreneur.

Stock Market Analysis& Personal Finance

The class introduces students tobasic methods for making moneyin the stock market. Studentsapply the lessons in a Stock MarketGame, and for some it will be thefirst step toward a career in theFinancial Markets.Today’s youngadults face a world where they willbe responsible for their ownfinancial lives. Long gone are thedays of everyone working until age65 then having your company payyour bills until you die. Instead,you will be responsible fordecisions on saving, investing andinsuring the money side of yourlife. This class introduces themajor decisions you are likely toface. The class motto is “don’t bethat guy living in your mom’sbasement at age 25, but also don’tbe that guy living in yourdaughter’s basement at age 75 cuzyou ran out of money!!!”

Marketing

In our free society, Marketingcommunication is all around usconstantly. Businesses compete tohave potential customers heartheir message and they hireprofessional experts to makedecisions on what to produce, howto best deliver it to customers,what price to charge, and whatmethods and medias to use toincrease sales. The course looks atthe work done by marketingteams at various familiar Sportsand Entertainment businesses andstudents will complete projectswhere they develop marketingplans for various realisticsituations.

Academy Introductionto Management

This is a class for students whowant to understand how tocompete in the constantlychanging corporate businessworld. Students will be introducedto the modern businessenvironment and its various careerpaths. Students will begin toconsider the types of people whoexcel in functional areas such asMarketing, Accounting, Finance,Operations, Human Resources andInformation & Technology, andcompare that to their ownstrengths and weaknesses.

AP Economics

AP Econ prepares students to takeTWO AP exams (Micro and Macro). It is also a great foundation formany types of professional fieldsfrom Engineering to Medicine to,of course, Business. In fact, Econ isthe #1 major at 6 of the 8 IvyLeague schools, because it hasbecome so well regarded in thejob market for youngprofessionals.With a teacher whogrades the exams nationally, focusis on improving performance onthe AP Exam. But perhaps equallyimportant is development of logicand precision that is required tosolve problems in Econ andelsewhere. If you want to bechallenged but still have somelaughs along the way, this is theAP class for you.

Senior Seminar

This is a research- and project-oriented course which will deepenstudents’ foundation ofunderstanding in four areas whichthe business community values, butoften finds lacking, in their youngemployees: 1. The International Business World 2. The Finance World 3. Leadership 4. CommunicationStudents will choose research topicsof their interest and present theirfindings to their peers, often in smallgroups. No textbooks, no quizzes,but often a new awareness of thebig world of opportunities awaitingthose willing to pursue them!

Business Network I

In its essence, a supply chain includeseverything that happens to a productor service from conceptualization tothe point of sale. This curriculumprovides a series of projects, whichguide students through a discovery ofall aspects of Supply ChainManagement. Course 1 – BasicConcepts is the first of a three-courseprogram. In this course, students willcomplete projects designed to showbasic concepts of Supply ChainManagement.

Business Network 2

This course is the second of a three-course program in Supply ChainManagement. Intermediate Conceptsintroduces students to Supply ChainManagement principles commonlyfound across all industries. Itreinforces the Supply ChainOperations Reference (SCOR) modelwith projects aligned to the buildingblocks: Plan, Source, Make, andDeliver.
