Project Background
• The 1st Children’s Hospital on the African continent
• 3,5 acres on Durban beachfront - 7 buildings, 4 are heritage
• A Public Sector Hospital closed by the SA apartheid govt. in 1984
• Remained closed for 28 years and deteriorated over time
• Since 2010 we have been re-establishing the hospital through a Public- Benefit Trust
• 5 year project – 2012 -2017
South Africa and the Struggle for Freedom from Tyranny- Freedom from Ill health, disease and want , as much as Freedom from racial oppression
Vision
To develop a world-class children’s hospital in South Africa that is:
• Cost–effective and financially sustainable • Not tertiary care but ‘filling niches’ in public sector health services• Open to all children and their care-givers regardless of economic
background or social standing• Environmentally-friendly
