are integral to its academic and economic strengths. The following principles apply in respect of the College’s
commitment to equality and diversity:
• To provide and promote equality of opportunity in all areas of its work and activity;
• To recognise and develop the diversity of skills and talent within its current and potential community;
• To ensure that all College members and prospective members are treated solely on the basis of their merits,
abilities and potential without receiving any unjustified discrimination or unfavourable treatment on
grounds such as age, disability, marital status, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual
orientation, trans status, socio-economic status or any other irrelevant distinction;
• To provide and promote a positive working, learning, and social environment which is free from prejudice,
discrimination and any forms of harassment, bullying or victimisation;
• To foster good relations between individuals from different groups and tackle prejudice and promote
understanding.
Athena SWAN

in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) subjects.
King's has been a member of the Athena SWAN Charter since 2007 and gained its Bronze institutional award
in 2008. The Athena SWAN agenda forms part of a wider suite of diversity and inclusion work streams.
Working with the Charter is helping King's to identify best practice for the working environment of all staff
working in science disciplines.

Further particulars
The Division
The Division of Transplantation Immunology & Mucosal Biology incorporates research in transplantation and
associated specialities of kidney, liver, gastrointestinal and urinary tract diseases. It unites expertise in basic
immunology and transplantation biology at King’s with clinical research teams at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS
Trust and King’s College Hospital who manage some of the largest transplant-patient cohorts in Europe to
deliver excellence in research at an internationally competitive level, and pursue top quality patient-
orientated studies.
The Division covers a broad range of basic and clinical investigation. It fosters a spirit of collaborative research
and aims to pursue excellence in fundamental medical science as well as translational research, throughout
the related clinical research fields at King’s Health Partners. The MRC Centre for Transplantation sits within
the Division as well as working with research teams in Immunology, Genetics, Dermatology, Imaging, Dental
and the School of Law and Ethics.
Research Departments and Heads:
• Experimental Immunobiology- Professor Graham Lord
• Immunoregulation & Immune Intervention- Professors Giovanna Lombardi and Randy Noelle
• Innate Immunity- Professor Anthony Dorling
• Liver Sciences- Professor Alberto Sanchez-Fueyo
• Renal Sciences- Professor Bruce Hendry
The five research sections are based over Guy’s and Denmark Hill campuses of King’s College London with
close integration with the two local NHS Trusts – King’s College Hospital and Guys’ and St Thomas’. The main
administrative offices for the Division are located in Guy’s Hospital, Guy's Campus of King's College London
and house the Head of Division, Professor Steven Sacks, the Divisional Manager, Dr Hélène Crutzen and some
of the administrative and support team.
The MRC Centre for Transplantation
The MRC Centre for Transplantation was established at King's College London in 2007 and was recently
awarded funding from the Medical Research Council for another five years until 2017.
The Centre's main aim is to bring the benefits of excellent research to people by translating basic discovery
into new therapeutic, diagnostic and prognostic application.
The MRC Centre for Transplantation spans four research themes:
1. Overcoming early inflammation after transplantation using cytoprotective therapy
2. Networks that regulate tolerance and promote long term graft acceptance
3. Immune prediction and monitoring as a guide to patient care
4. Investigating the inflammatory and immune response by external imaging
Its science base cuts across liver, kidney, pancreas, bone marrow, islet, hepatocyte and stem cell
transplantation, in what is one of the largest patient groups in Europe.
The Centre incorporates a training theme in research ethics and legislation via links with the Centre of
Medical Law and Ethics at KCL. The MRC Centre is closely linked with the Transplant theme of the NIHR
Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
The main administrative offices for the Centre are located in Guy’s Hospital, Guy's Campus of King's College
London and house the Centre Director, Professor Steven Sacks, Deputy Director, Professor Anthony Dorling,
the Centre Manager, Dr Hélène Crutzen and the administrative and support team.

MRC Centre for Transplantation (UK)-Emory University (USA) Bridging Fellowship Scheme
The proposed programme aims to create a link between two progressive clinical-academic transplant centres
and to develop synergies that contribute to the development of world-class academic healthcare.
This collaboration is intended to add value through joint research that would not have been possible at either
Centre alone.
Emory University School of Medicine, USA, has 2,328 full- and part-time faculty and 833 volunteer faculty. The
school had more than 6,600 applications in 2012 for 138 first-year medical student positions. This racially
diverse class has an even mix of men and women, and more than half of its members are nontraditional,
meaning that they were out of college for at least a year before entering medical school. In 2012, the pass
rate for first-time takers of steps 1 and 2 of the National Board Exam (testing basic science and clinical
knowledge and skills) was 99% and 100%, respectively. Since the establishment of the Department of Surgery
in 1930, it has been essential to shaping the Emory University School of Medicine into one of the nation's top
institutions for biomedical education, research and patient care.
The Department offers prospective residents many opportunities for a rich and rewarding training experience,
including diverse practice settings in seven facilities; nationally prominent faculty; and residency and
fellowship programs in breast cancer, cardiothoracic surgery, endosurgery, general surgery, oral and
maxillofacial surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, transplantation, trauma/surgical
critical care, and vascular surgery. The Emory Transplant Center (ETC) has 45 faculty members who include
basic scientists and clinical researchers across departments ranging from surgery to medicine to pediatrics.
The highly skilled staff of transplant specialists offers comprehensive treatment and support, and no Georgia
transplant center offers better access to cutting-edge transplant technology. They are committed to providing
our patients superior quality outcomes, and to developing new transplant therapies to prevent or delay organ
failure through ground-breaking clinical research.
Benefits of the Emory-MRC Centre link in Transplantation Science:
1. By spending time at Emory candidates will gain access and expertise in experimental models not
available at the MRC Centre for Transplantation
2. Candidates will strengthen their track record of research and add value to their CV and future grant
applications
3. This placement will offer numerous unique opportunities for networking in the field of Transplantation
The Post
The MRC Centre for Transplantation is seeking to identify two outstanding medical or surgical trainees who
are committed to a clinical-academic career and are willing to undertake a one-year collaborative research
placement including the opportunity to spend up to 12 months at Emory University School of Medicine
Department of Surgery. The candidates may already hold a research degree (e.g. PhD) or may be aiming to
undertake PhD training. The successful candidates will be motivated to furthering their training at the MRC
Centre for Transplantation. The Bridging Fellowship at Emory will be funded for up to 12 months, during which
time the successful candidates will be expected to submit a grant application (with guidance from their
Emory/MRC mentors) based on their research experience, with a view to extending their research training at
the MRC Centre. Applicants should be able to demonstrate strategic fit, i.e. alignment with existing
programmes within the MRC Centre and Emory.
