SCAING OFFAlways on 640 AM

I listen to station KFI all the time. Iunderstand Mr. KFI left recently, and I'llmiss him very much. Maybe you can inter-view the former Mr. KFI and find out whathis future plans are. Also please interviewPhil Hendrie, the new 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.talk show host.

Betsy Briggs of San Bernardino

Barkley MissedThanks for letting me know where they

are now in the Sept./Oct. issue. You didn'tmention KMPC's Jerry Dexter's where-abouts. Have no fear. Jerry saw the articleand called me to let me know he's aliveand well and living in L.A. It was such anice thing for him to do. Thank you, Jerry.

KABC went with hip and flip and firedstyle and grace. Roger Barkley is a trueradio personality and one of L.A's longest -running ones. He always comes out on topand will again. I know I speak for a lot ofus out there who are going elsewhere inthe mornings. Roger, we're waiting andhoping for a new station for you.

Gold Mine of InfoThanks for publishing - and compiling

- your L.A. Radio Guide . I had received asample copy in June and found it a goldmine of useful listings found nowhere else.More power to you for doing a muchneeded job for a world that's sickened ofovercommercialized TV.

Letter to LooneyDear Thom,

Have you noticed that the TammyBruce show went from cool to totally suck-ing? Like you, the Wayne Meister [WayneResnick], does seem pretty good now!

Confused by ShufflingKFI got rid of one of my all-time favorite

talk hosts, Mr. KFI, and brought in anotherof my all-time favorite talk hosts, PhilHendrie.

KMPC fired a couple other of my all-time favorite hosts: Tom Leykis and JoeCrummey, and installed a bunch of goose-stepping, right-winger freaks. Now the sin-gle -subject conservative wackos on KMPCare dropping like flies, and I even heardJoe Crummey back on there the other day.

And add Oxnard's KTRO-1520 as anoth-er of the stations in the burbs that runsTom Leykis.

I'm s00000 confused! You must helpme sort this all out. Here is my 12 bucksfor a subscription.

Sour on Oldies Radio in L.A.Your article about oldies radio in

Southern California was written as a joke, wasn't it? There is no such thing as oldiesradio in Southern California.

K -Earth and KOLA play the same stale200 to 300 songs over and over; KRLAstinks in general; and KCBS isn't worth amention.

When I was on radio in Sacramento(KSFM, 96.9 from 1966 through 1971), Ihad the highest rated program in history(Arbitron and Pulse services). My programwas on Sunday mornings from 6 a.m. tonoon. My listening audience averaged325,000, and the population of the citywas 250,000 at that time. Sponsorship wasbooked six months in advance and washighly successful. The problem was thatwe were owned by a group of investorswho were using the station as a tax write-off. But due to the success of the station, itwas sold out of existence in 1971.

What was the secret to my success? Myrecord library of over 5,000 oldies. Eachprogram was different with a minimum ofrepeats.

KMPC RefittedIn an effort that historians may liken

to the rebuilding of the Santa Monicafreeway after the Northridge quake,KMPC Program Director Dave Cooke hasundertaken a major retrofitting of the sag-ging AM station. The morning team ofPeter Tilden and Tracey Miller has beenrefitted with Los Angeles Times columnistRobin Abcarian taking the place ofTilden, who is now teamed with Ken

Robin Abcarian and Tracey Miller

Minyard on KABC (see KABC news storybelow). In the early '90s, Miller teamedwith news announcer Terri -Rae Elmerfor "T 'n T in the Morning" on KFI.Another ex-KFIer, Marilyn Kagan, isback on a full-time schedule, offering per-sonal advice from 9 a.m. to noon. FormerChicago WLS-FM talk personality TuriRyder takes calls from noon to 3 p.m.,followed by the return of Joe Crummey inafternoon drive (Oct. 21).

"People with the initials J.C. have ahabit of coming back," Crummeyquipped.

The former midday host was dismissedlast February, despite his relatively highratings. Crummey's intermezzo includedstops at KST in Sacramento, KFMB andchannel 10 in San Diego, WWDB inPhiladelphia and KLSX, here in L.A.

Syndicated liberal talk host BernieWard from San Francisco's KGO-AM ison the weekend schedule from 10 a.m. to

1 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays.Conservative talkers Bob Heckler andMichael Reagan are gone from 710 Talk.

Helping to glue the elements togetherat the sister talk stations is former TomLeykis show producer Erik Braverman, who occupies the new position of execu-tive producer for KABC and KMPC.Mornings at 790

It was an unlucky Friday the 13th inSeptember for Roger Barkley, who washalf of the Ken And Barkley morningteam on KABC 790 AM for six years.Management told the 42 -year radio vetthat his services would no longer be need-ed after his 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. broadcast. The powers that be switched Peter Tildenfrom sister station KMPC to KABC,replacing Barkley. Ken Minyardremained as half of the new KABC show,"Minyard and Tilden." which debutedSept. 23.

"I was stunned, to say the least,"Barkley said in a prepared statementreleased to the press. "The program, itseemed to me, was as popular as ever. Many times we were the top -rated No. 1morning show in Los Angeles radio. I willalways be proud of that achievement. Itwas a splendid time! I'm just sorry itended so abruptly."

KABC/KMPC Program Manager AndyLudlum described the change as anopportunity to unite two highly entertain -

Peter Tilden and Ken Minyard

Peter would be two big egos," Ludlumsaid. "I like what I'm hearing: a lot ofhumor and warmth."

"Counterpunch" section, criticizing hisstation for not letting him say goodbye tohis listeners on the air after his 14 -yeartenure. Chuck Madden - imported fromKMPC - now announces the scores forMinyard and Tilden.Saved by the Mouse?

Thirty-year talk KABC 790 AM veteranand self -described liberal MichaelJackson admitted for the first time duringhis Friday Oct. 4 broadcast that he wasalmost sacked by the previous regime atKABC.

"I was nearly replaced by a conserva-tive - whose name I won't mention,"Jackson said on his radio program. "He's avery nice man and an excellent broadcast-er."

Jackson noted that as a liberal hedoesn't consider people with oppositeviews to be his "enemies" and that hetries to be "fair." He said that conserva-tive talk hosts use their shows as a "bullypulpit" in their relentless attacks on liber-alism and President Clinton.

Was Disney's recent purchase ofABC/Cap Cities radio a factor in stemmingthe conservative tide at KMPC andKABC? Conservative firebrand Bob Grantwas fired from New York's WABC shortly

Phil Hendricafter his unsympathetic remarks aboutCommerce Secretary Ron Brown's deathin a plane crash during an official missionin Bosnia earlier this year. However, con-servative talk station KSFO-AM in SanFrancisco remains unchanged.

(Please see cover story on page 13.)Mr. KFI Replaced

KFI 640 AM replaced open -forum hostMr. KFI in his 9 p.m. to midnight shiftwith Miami talk host Phil Hendrie, whoarrived from Miami's WIODKFI was offered the midnight to 3 a.m.shift, but declined. Had he accepted, itwould have become L.A.'s only localovernight talk show.

"We are really sorry that for personalreasons Mr. KFI said he couldn't take thejob," KFI Program Director David Hallsaid.

Hendrie, who worked at KFI from1989 to 1990, brings a repertoire of char-acter voices and a knack for comic impro-visation that made him a hit in Miamitalk radio. The multi -voiced entertainerboasts 15 years in music radio, includingstints at Los Angeles' KWST-FM, KNX-FM and KLSX-FM.

Mr. KFI told Radio Guide that he hadreceived more than 4,000 e -mails in theweek following his departure. His voicemail at the station was filled with out-pourings from listeners - many tearful -according to the former host.

The nighttime personality remains baf-fled by the sudden turn in his fortunes atthe 50,000 -watt clear channel signal.

"It's not that my ratings were everlow," he said. "They were consistently

Will the mystery talk jock resurface?"I expect to be on the air in January, in

are so distinct that people would knowwho I am." he said.B-100.3 Gets DJs

L.A.'s newest radio station, rhythmicadult contemporary KIBB 100.3 FM or"B-100.3," began assembling itsannouncing staff in October. Now spin-ning the mix of contemporary "churban"hits and disco oldies from the '80s is mid-day personality Leigh Ann Adam. Maybe those surrogate husband -wifemorning combos just don't work any-more. The Sharpes, who were married inreal life, were dismissed from Star 98.7 ayear ago, and KMPC's Tracey Miller andPeter Tilden have been separated. WithBill Wright gone, KBIG 104.3 FM offersa "fatherless" morning show, leavingSylvia Aimerito in command.

Star Finds Talent in BuildingAfter conducting a "world-wide" tal-

ent search to find a permanent replace-ment for the afternoon spot at Star 98.7FM, Program Director Angela Perelliselected evening air talent RyanSeacrest. "Ultimately, we decided theperson for the job was already in thebuilding," Perelli said. "His familiaritywith the station and the audience madethe decision that much easier."

Classical NotesThe husband and wife team of morn-

ing host Bonnie Grice and Presidentand General Manager Dr. Wallace Smithare no longer with KUSC 91.5 FM. Smithresigned from the public station Sept. 27,explaining that the time had come for newleadership. A few weeks later, actingGeneral manager Steve Lama fired Grice, the host of "Wake Up L.A.!"

Before stepping down, Smithannounced plans to restore KUSC's iden-tity as a classical music radio station.Less than a year ago, in a sweeping over-haul of the programming, Angelenos wereintroduced to an innovative mixture ofjazz and classical music, which the sta-tion called "Classic 91.5."

"While listeners have appreciated ourairing a wide variety of music, we havedetermined that what they really appreci-ated the most is classical music," Smithexplained. "In addition, recent changes inthe Los Angeles radio market find lessclassical music on the dial."

Since the shakeup, commercial classi-cal station KKGO 105.1 FM hired Griceto host two shows on Sunday evening:"Classical Currents" and "The SundayEvening Opera."

Barely a month after Steve Morrisreplaced Gary Hollis on KKGO, thetables turned again. Rich Capparela tookover the morning show Sept. 16 in a 7a.m. to 11 a.m. shift. Hollis is back in anabbreviated 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. weekdaytime slot.

Kids' Station Adds PowerChildren's radio station KPLS 830 AM

has finally gotten the green light from theFCC to raise its power from 2,300 to50,000 watts during the day and 23,000watts at night. "Radio Aahs" was granteda construction permit, which allows it toput up the six towers needed to effect theboost. Currently, the Orange County radiostation reaches parts of Los Angeles witha faint signal. The increase will make this"Radio Aahs" network affiliate loudenough for listeners in Los Angeles.

"This will make us a player in LosAngeles," KPLS Program Director BruceBarker said. "I've had this on my desk for ayear, and now we're finally going to do it."

Last month, Minneapolis -based RadioAahs pulled the plug on its two live week-end shows from Disneyland andDisneyworld and replaced them with twoshows from the Universal Studios themeparks in Orlando and California and onefrom Knott's Berry Farm.

The Disney Company, which ownsKABC, KMPC and KLOS, also has a chil-dren's radio network, but has yet toannounce whether it will seek a LosAngeles affiliate.

KKBT ("the Beat'), KPWR ("Power 106")and KFI. KRTH ("K -Earth"), KTWV ("theWave"), KIIS, KLAX, KABC and KOSTrounded out the top 10. Groove Radio'snew dance sound put the call lettersKACD and KBCD into ratings land for thefirst time since it was smooth jazz "CD103.1." Among the rock stations, KROQleads the pack, but KLYY edged ahead ofKSCA. KOST still wins in the adult con-temporary race, trailed by KBIG, thenKYSR ("Star 98.7"). Soft hits KXEZ wasreplaced by the rhythmic -flavored KIBB("B-100") in September, and the resultswon't be measured until the fall ratingsare out. KRLA's "Oldies and More" formatattracted fewer listeners or scared awaysome old ones without finding replace-ments. Country KZLA went up one -tenthof a ratings point and seems close to hit-ting a new stride. Its sister station, nos-talgia KLAC with "Imus in the Morning,"lost a few tenths. Nevertheless, the I -manis rapidly finding a new audience, postinga 1.6 in his first L.A. ratings book.

K -Love's Pepe Barretto stays on top ofthe morning pack. The Beat's "JohnLondon" and the House Party" is No. 2,followed by Power 106's Baka Boyz,KLSX's Howard Stern and KFI's BillHandel. The High Cost of Being No. 1The city's No. 1 English -language

morning show recently found itselfembroiled in controversy. Urban radio sta-tion KKBT 92.3 FM aired a comedy bitcalled "Little Crackhead" on "JohnLondon" and The House Party." The rou-tine, which aired for about eight weeksbefore it was finally pulled last month, offered an irreverent depiction of crackaddiction. Compton Mayor Omar Bradleyand the Brotherhood Crusade's DannyBakewell took the station to task for mak-ing light of the problem. After meetingwith Bradley and Bakewell, KKBT GeneralManager Craig Wilbraham went on theair with a public apology for the sketch.KIIS Changes Hands

Rick Dees, who just celebrated the20th anniversary of his No. 1 single,"Disco Duck," has a new boss. In anoth-er major media merger Sept. 26, JacorCommunications, Inc. traded its Tampa,Fla. Bothdeals await approval from the FCC.KSCA's Finest Hours

For two weeks in October, rock stationKSCA 101.9 FM ran a special, "L.A.'sFinest Rock A to Z." Arranging songsalphabetically by title provided uncharac-teristic focus to the station's otherwisesprawling "adult album alternative"(a.k.a. AAA or "triple A") rock format. Itrecalled some other brilliant flourishes bystations about to be changed, sold or oth-erwise "flipped" to some other kind ofmusic. (The last days of rocker "PirateRadio" - now KIBB 100.3 FM - wereparticularly inspired.)

Watching talk maestro MichaelJackson on the air orchestrating guestsand callers is like watching a great con-ductor; his every move is an excitingmelody, and he never misses a beat.

Just before the election, Jackson medi-ated between opponents and proponentsof Prop 215( marijuana's medicinal use),interrupting at perfect intervals to alloweach side its say. When libertarian presi-dential candidate Harry Brown came onthe line, the veteran host asked the exactquestions everyone wanted to know andalso let callers have their say.

When frenetic weight -loss guruRichard Simmons popped into the studio,Jackson changed tunes and persona. Asthe TV star sang show tunes about diet-ing, a giggling Jackson accompanied himwith doo-wops while crunching Simmons'line of low -fat caramel corn and eggingthe comedian on.

machine that answers with "Hello, I'mDick."

Jackson has interviewed everyAmerican president since LyndonJohnson. His phone book lists the likesof: Bishop Desmond Tutu, MargaretThatcher, General Colin Powell, GeneralNorman Schwarzkopf, Henry Kissinger,Etta James, B.B. King, Judy Collins, LizaMineIli, Trisha Yearwood, Mel Brooks,Norman Mailer, Gore Vidal, Hank Aron,Magic Johnson, Cher, Whoopi Goldbergand Charleton Heston - for starters.

His workday begins at 6:40 am whenhe scans seven newspapers. He receivestwo boxes of mail a day, which he readshimself - sometimes while on the air.Even with two producers working for him,Jackson takes a hands-on approach to hisshow, carefully considering how he willstack his always impressive lineup ofguests. When authors appear on his

"Michael Jackson is a combination ofJames Bond and the Pope," Simmonsexclaimed. "He's got that sexy voice andmystery like James Bond, mysterious likea 'Foggy Day in London Town,' " he belt-ed out in a Mermanesque manner. "He'sa peacemaker and a caretaker like thePope." Simmons chortled and added sin-cerely, "I trust him: he's honest. I do 425radio shows a year, and I have recipecards for each host with a rating. I giveMichael the best rating: four stars."

Like Simmons, most guests of the "TheMichael Jackson Show" on KABC 790 AM(weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon) give theirhost top ratings.

When the libertarian candidate signedoff, he told his interviewer, "You're themost open-minded liberal I have ever metin my life."

The gentlemanly host has earned therespect of political figures and celebritiesthrough the years; his Rolodex wouldmake Heidi Fleiss envious. He has beenknown to call Mayor Richard Riordan ona pressing issue at home at 7 a.m. andleave an answer on his honor's phone

show, they are surprised to find a hostwho actually has read their books.

The well-read interviewer describeshis job as akin to playing "Russianroulette with a telephone." He takes thecalls as they come and relishes talking topeople who don't agree with him.

Jackson is a product of a strict Englishboarding school. During World War II,while his father was in the Royal AirForce, the Voice of America broadcastsentranced the boy. He dreamed aboutgoing to Hollywood. Entertainment fig-ures such as Bing Crosby filled the youngJackson with awe.

"I was amazed that the biggest starcould take the humblest person and intro-duce them as if they were very importantand they become important," Jacksonmused. "I learned a great lesson fromBing Crosby."

Longing for a Hollywood career, he feltthat he didn't have the looks for themovies, but knew he had the voice. He sethis sights on L.A. radio. He predicted thathe wouldn't marry an actress, but enter-tained fantasies of marrying the daughter

of a movie star. After the war, his family moved to

South Africa, where his father had fallenin love with the sunshine while instruct-ing fighter pilots. He finished school at 16and immediately searched for a positionin broadcasting. By winning a nationalGolden Voice of Radio contest sponsoredby the South African BroadcastingCorporation, he snared his first job.

At 17, he learned a lesson for life whenDanny Kaye visited South Africa.

"I had done no homework, and I askedDanny Kaye some inane question,"Jackson recalled. "He just stared at meand said not one word. Since that time, Ihave always done my homework."

Years later, in Los Angeles, he andKaye became the best of friends, after themovie star reminded him of that dreadfulinterview.

At 2 I , Jackson left South Africa behindand moved to London, where he took anentry-level broadcasting job at the BBC.He quickly graduated to higher posts:television announcer, children's showhost and DJ on Radio Luxembourg.

In 1959, he took the first step towardrealizing his dream of Hollywood andfound a job in Springfield, Mass. as aradio and television host. He learned howto become an American. Eighteen monthslater, he drove across the country to SanFrancisco where he became a rock DJ onKYA. He called himself "MichaelScotland."

Six months later, at the Bay Area'sKEWB, Jackson was given a free hand onthe air to create his own overnight talkshow. After an article about him appearedin Time magazine, radio stations in LosAngeles started wooing him. KHJ andKNX hired and fired him before he land-ed at KABC Dec. 12, 1966.

Thirty years later, the seasoned hostloves his job more than ever.

"There's a greater variety of people,"he explained. "I no longer ever get intim-idated by guests: I get stimulated, butnever nervous."

Honored by her Majesty QueenElizabeth with the Member of the MostExcellent Order of the British Empire(M.B.E.), recipient of seven Emmys andfour Golden Mike Awards, the broadcast-ing pro is unphased by critics who accusehim of being too easy on his guests.

"They're full of it," he declared. "Myaccent makes it easier to get away withthings. At a conference I attended inWashington, Bob Grant [East Coast con-servative talk host] kept referring to thepresident as 'Slick Willie.' I said, 'Howvery brave of you. Would you do that faceto face with the president?' He said, 'Well,of course not. He's the president of theUnited States; he wouldn't come on myshow.' I said, 'There's the difference. Hewould come on my show, and I haveearned the right to say to the president,'How do you feel about people calling youSlick Willie?' I asked the same question, but haven't been personally insulting. They would call that soft; I call that diplo-matic and getting the answer I'm seeking."

During his interview with HillaryClinton - live from Washington D.C. -he was able to relate to the first lady'sdesire to rid the world of land mines, which maim and kill children, by tellingthe story of his youth during World WarII. He recalled how nothing was left of hisfellow students who played with booby -

trapped toy trucks and rode bomb -riggedbicycles dropped by the Luftwaffe.

L.A. is Jackson's home, and he calls itthe most exciting city in the world.

"It's where the stone hits the water, causing a ripple -out effect in so manyareas," he enthused. "It's where we givethe world a different religion everymonth. Nowhere else is like it. We arepoised to be the leading community of the21st Century."

Jackson and his wife, Alana (daughterof Alan Ladd), have three children. Theiroldest son, Alan, owns two restaurants,Jackson's and Jackson's Farm in BeverlyHills. Alisa works in post -production film. His son, Devon, is a nationally -rankedequestrian who attends LoyolaMarymount.

Talk show conductor Jackson hasplayed many symphonies with his orches-tra of talk skills and is still perfecting hiscraft. He has a spirited glow with gleam-ing childlike eyes when he works.

"When I came to this station 30 yearsago, I was the youngest on the staff," hesaid. "I don't care if sounds immodest, but I truly believe that I am still theyoungest on the staff."

Counting Radioheads: MultipleTrophies in L.A. Ratings Races

BY KATHY GRONAUHow can so many stations and person-

alities claim to be No. 1? Are all the suc-cess stories based on ratings reality?

Jeff Williams, research director forSpanish romantic hits station KLVE 107.5FM - the No. 1 -ranked station overall inL.A. - recalled an old joke in the radiobusiness: "Everyone is No. I; you justhave to look harder," he said.

A station may be No. I for the generalpopulation (12 and older), but not No. 1 forpeople ages 25-54. Different categories oflisteners allow for many "No. 1" stations.

"It is like a person saying, 'We are thebiggest.' Does that mean he/she is thetallest? The heaviest? The most powerful?"pointed out Arbitron's Thomas Mocarsky, vice president of communications.

Just as Nielsen Media Research esti-mates the size of TV audiences, Arbitronfigures the number of listeners for radiostations. The research company collectsinformation by asking people to voluntari-ly keep a diary of their radio listening overa seven-day period. From the informationin the diaries, Arbitron tells stations howthey stack up against their competitors. But there arc many different types of racesto win or to lose. Below are the major cat-egories that Arbitron uses to compare sta-tions. (Source:Arbitron)

ESTIMATED AUDIENCE: If audi-ence is estimated by the number of quarterhours that persons over 12 years old listento the radio between 6 a.m. and midnight,KLVE-FM wins with 7.1 percent of all theradio listening.

"Cume" (cumulative audience) mea-sures the amount of different individualswho tune in to a station for at least fiveminutes during a specified time period. With 1.5 million listeners, "rhythmicCHR" KPWR 105.9 FM leads in cume, fol-lowed by top 40 KIIS 102.7 FM with 1.4million.

Though KLVE scores lower in cume,Hispanic radio audiences tend to listen forlonger periods. This gives them a higherTime Spent Listening (TSL) and a biggershare.

"Our cume is not the highest, but our

TSL is one of the highest, if not, the high-est," KLVE's Williams said. "Our cume isover a million, which makes KLVE rank 4-5. But we have substantially more TSL foradults 18 -plus, 51 quarter hours a week.KPWR has 26 quarter hours of listening aweek. KKBT 92.3 FM has 44 [quarter]hours per week."

To keep that average of people listeningfor 51 15 -minute periods, KLVE tries to be"comfy and cozy," without abrasive inter-ruptions in programming.

News stations KFWB 980 AM and KNX1070 AM are programmed for shorteraudio visits.

"Generally, the TSL on our station ismore modest compared to easy listeningstations or talk stations, where peoplekeep the station on for a long period,"explained KNX News Director Bob Sims.

"When they use a news station, peopletune in to get an update on the news or forspecific information," Sims said. "You geton the freeway to get the traffic report oryou want a baseball score, or what theweather is going to be. The programming isdesigned that way. The nature of the busi-ness requires some repetition."

SURVEY PERIOD: Listening habitschange with the seasons. For example,KNX-AM, many times rated the No. 1 sta-tion in terms of cumulative listeners overthe age of 25, and sometimes ranked theNo. 1 station in the Western U.S. for audi-ence over 25, loses some listeners in thesummer because kids are out of school.

"When [kids] are in the car, they con-trol the radio," Sims said. "Rock 'n' rolldoes better."

GEOGRAPHIC AREA: Stations maybe more successful in different parts of theL.A.-radio metro area, which includes L.A.and Orange counties.

"The Beat" (KKBT-FM) covers most ofthe Southland with its strong signal. Urbanrival KJLH 102.3 FM focuses its weakerpower toward its target audience in themetro area (74 percent African -American).

DEMOGRAPHIC GROUP: Stationsattract bigger audiences in one age groupand less in others. For instance, KIIS-FMis No. 1 among listeners ages 18-49.

Page 20: Mr. Jackson's Opus From D.C. to Hollywood · 2019-07-17 · married to the daughter of a movie star, Jackson is a seasoned interviewer with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

TIME OF THE DAY: Audienceschange throughout the different "day -parts." Most stations have their biggestaudience during the morning -drive, espe-cially news stations.

"They are pumped up: ready to go andtake on the world," Sims said. "Listeningto the news is part of getting ready; you arcenergized, getting up to speed with thenews is one thing that fits with that kind ofattitude."

Listeners have a different attitude afterwork. After 5 p.m., KTWV 94.7 FM ratesquite high with its relaxing blend ofsmooth jazz.

"In the evenings, 7 to midnight, the No.1 station of the English-speaking audienceis the Wave with adults 25-49 and 25-54,"KTWV Research Manager Mary Griswoldsaid. "There arc two stations ahead, bothare Spanish."

LOCATION: Most radio listening isdone at home, but listening in the work-place is increasing.

KIIS-FM is one of the leading L.A. sta-tions for car -bound listeners. "People lis-ten to personality radio in the car for thecompanionship and entertainment it pro-vide.," General Sales Manager Charlie

Rahilly said. The Beat is the top gun inthat drive -time car listening followed byKNX, modern rocker KR0Q106.7 FM andKFWB. KFWB calls itself the "in -car sta-tion," because at least 80 percent of its lis-tening is to the car radio.

Stations use detailed research abouttheir listeners to convince radio advertis-ers to buy time on their stations.

"[For advertisers], that is the virtue ofradio: its targetablity," KLVE's Williams said.

Each type of programming draws listen-ers with a particular lifestyle. Listeners inthe age group 25-54 tuning in to modernrock comprise a very different audiencethan the same age group that prefers urbanor soft adult contemporary music.

Advertisers' favorite age group is 25-54,because they purchase lots of goods andservices; their families and careers aregrowing and they travel. In addition, theyare still forming their buying habits.

Los Angeles stands out in the nationfrom other cities with fewer stations andmore homogenous populations. In one ofthe most internationally diverse cities inthe world, it's not surprising we have somany winners in the many radio races.

The Last of the Big Band DJs!BY JOHN P. COOPER

While the rapidly aging GenerationXers and baby boomers in command ofthe Los Angeles radio industry may thinkthere's no place in the local market for thesounds of the swing and pre -swing era, don't bother telling that to David Plotkin!

Virtually single-handedly, thePasadena kid presents his weekly radioprogram, "TWilight Rhythm," on Saturdayevenings at 11 p.m. on KORG 1190 AM.Unusual enough in itself. Plotkin is one ofthe last of the big band broadcastersaround L.A. Even more unusual is the factthat he is only 14!

"Rare and obscure," Plotkin said, refer-ring to his preferred tastes in late '20s andearly '30s jazz and dance music. " 'Fatsand his Buddies' from '29 "Wow, splendidrecord."

The high school freshman, who playstrombone and alto sax, learned about themusic at the Mozartian age of 5. Later, toward his middle age (8 or 9), he wasentranced by the sounds of Chuck Cecil's"Swingin' Years" on KPCC.

"What a smooth delivery." he said.Captivated by the music of another era,

he began to collect original 78 rpmrecords. LPs and CDs from local stores.

About a year ago, while looking forrecords at a local swap meet, David metJoe Monte, who hosted a local program onKPCC 89.3 that featured those classic '20sand '30s recordings.

He began taping all Monte's shows, sold the majority of his collection of swingand post -swing era recordings and beganto focus on the music that immediatelypreceded the heyday of Glenn Miller,Tommy Dorsey and Artie Shaw.

"Every collector goes through that peri-od when he first starts, " the musicologistexplained. "He has to figure out what hereally likes."

As fate and Monte would have it,David was soon a guest on two of hisshows, associating with those whosemusical and radio -active concerns werethe equal of his own.

"I was absolutely amazed to hear thiskid," radio fan and record collector RobertBell remarked. "He knew the artists, thebands, the recording locations and all thescats. Monte was astounded listening to

David Plotkinthis guy. It was wild."

Plotkin's rise to the top of the midnighthour when almost all others have fallenmay have as much to do with the youngbroadcaster's tenacity as it does his loveaffair with the stomping sounds of the late'20s and early '30s. At an age when manyof his contemporaries were looking foradvice from their guidance counselors,Plotkin enrolled in broadcasting school, and soon turned up on brokered stationKLAV-AM in Las Vegas. After six weeks,he started looking for a station closer tohome. Plotkin asked Lyman Jay, formerlyof the late, semi -lamented and legendary500 -watt big band station, KGRB-AM, fora recommendation. Jay directed the teento KORG in Anaheim.

After a round of intense negotiating,"Thrilight Rhythm" debuted on the OrangeCounty outlet in early November. With analready in -tow following of like-mindedmusic lovers and new listeners sure to jointhem, fans can hear the best and the rarestof the jazz bands of the Roaring '20s andDepression -era America.

To a lesser extent. Plotkin enjoys themusic of his contemporaries, calling it"I istena ble."

One or two of those peers have showedan interest in the platters David spins onKORG's turntables.

While the dream of many record collec-tors is to have their own radio program, few pursue the dream and fewer achieve it.

Along with the venerable Chuck Cecil.Plotkin remains, at least for the timebeing, the last of the big band disc jock-eys. Yet, with the musical tastes of youngAmerica constantly in flux, perhaps theyoung DJ will lead a full-scale revival onradio of the music of the swing and pre -swing eras. Keep listening, Los Angeles.for David Plotkin is...on the air!

I

Lou Qf INI'm prejudice. I've got my top down,

my radio turned up loud, and I'm preju-dice. Against what? KABC's MichaelJackson. It's that voice, that god -awfulaccent. His show is no doubt singular. His guest list makes Larry King drip spit-tle. If only he'd talk normal, like peoplefrom upstate New York.

By the way, I enjoy Dennis Prager'sshow on KABC too. (If every right-wingparanoid were as domesticated as Prager, the radio world would be an even moreinviting sector. )

I miss my close friend Mr. KFI. Hisreplacement, Phil Hendrie, has made mesnort. One night, one of his "guests" wassome personage who worked for thetobacco industry, selling and pushing cig-arettes on children at Toys -R -Us storesaround Southern California. The knee-jerk callers were irate. It was a snicker asecond. I was genuinely generously guf-fawing.

When Wayne Resnick first startedgigging at KFI, he was not unlike a mal-adroit teen learning how to drive. Nowhe's Mario Andretti. He's a liberal looney, and he waxes loquaciously. (If every left-wing demon were as domesticated asResnick, the radio world would be aneven more inviting sector. )

Marilyn Kagan, popular feel-good-happy-chat-pop-psycher who once was atpowerhouse KFI, is now doing middaysat KABC's ugly stepsister, KMPC. (It's at710 on the dial - the station CharlieTuna used to be on - the one you surf

right by on your way from KFI-AM 640to 790 KABC.) A typical call goes some-thing like this:

Caller: "I just murdered my mother, and I feel so bad."

Kagan: "Oh honey, don't feel bad. Wasyour mother mean?"

I've never had anything all that appro-batory to say about Real Radio (97.1

KLSX) in the Looney POV before, so Iwill now forge forth with my deeply dis-criminating deliberation. Even though Ithink the station really lowballs its audi-ence with droopy topics most of the time,"The Regular Guys" (Larry & Eric) are asound -bite -a -minute. Yes, their show hasa very Madonna-esque "Aren't we shock-ing" quality, but they've ripened. Theydon't seem happy with their demograph-ics at this juncture, so they avoid surren-dering too much airtime to their trailer -dwelling callers.

I was tripping or had a flashback or aseizure or something recently, and acci-dentally hit the KIEV button on my carradio. It was George Putnam! (Eitherthat, or it was skip coming in from 1934.)

Trivia: Did you know that the Ted Baxtercharacter on Mary Tyler Moore wasbased on George Putnam? (Actually, theyconcocted the Ted Baxter character withthis lethal mixture: looks, Jerry Dunphy;personality and voice, George Putnam;name, Baxter Ward.) Fact.

XTRA Sports 690 hasn't been the samesince Chet Forte died. I wish they'd bringhim back ... If you were hanging out inEast L.A., you'd think there was one radiostation in Los Angeles: 1110-KRLAAnybody seen Kato?

The opinions embodied in the LooneyPoint of View are Looney opinions, and notnecessarily those of the L.A. Radio Guide.
