It’sbeenabusyfirsthalfoftheyearwithsomethingofnoteeverymonth.In July we celebrated the 90th Birthday of our lovely Soldiers’ MemorialHALLwithanotherwonderfulVioletDayHighTea,organisedandhostedbyourveryownPaulaBartsch,withhelp fromtheusualsuspectsThankYouDiAnderson,KathFisher,PaulineTaheny,thelovelyElizabeth–whospentthe WHOLE day washing dishes, Pete Stephens who did the fantasticlightingand sound for bothevents,DoreenKuszczokolusawhomade anddecoratedthebirthdaycake,andBill–withoutwhoasbackup,thingsjustwouldn’tgetdone!ManythanksalsototheCommunityDinnersgroup.The Wind and Brass Quintets of the Band of the South Australian Policeplayed several brackets with a mixture of music from popular operas tocontemporaryclassics,whichwastheperfectbackdropforahightea.Thehallwasbuzzing,althoughforawhilewethoughtwe’dovercatered,intheendwejudgeditfairlywell.IntheeveningwehadtheCommunityDinner–thistimeinthehall–withfantasticentertainmentprovidedbyTOTT.Itwasawonderful–iftiringdayforallconcernedandwe’dliketothankallwhohelpedandcamealongtohelpuscelebrate.

impossibletaskattheeleventhhour–tolearnthenperformsongsthroughout the night of the Community Dinner to celebrate the90thBirthdayofourGrandoldHall,andwhatagrandjobtheydid!Goingfromstrengthtostrength,thiswonderfultroupeentertaineduswithpoetryandsong,andeventheoddjokethrowninforgoodmeasure, bringing the audience with them on a musical tripthrough the ages. As Molly would say, do yourself a favour andmakesureyoucatchtheirnextshowlater intheyear. It’ssuretobeacracker!

I have said many times that the Mantra of the MountPleasant Men’s Shed (MPMS) is men’s health and well-being.Therearemanyways to lookafterone’shealth, sothe MPMS carried out a survey and the overwhelmingresultwas that it is themembers– it isus. Whenwegettogether,we enjoyourselves,discussdomestic andworldissues and, on most occasions, solve those issues in anafternoon. Wereallyshouldhaveadirect linetoMalcolmandBill.However,therecomesatimewhenwe,asmembersoftheMount PleasantMen’sShed,must takea firmstandwhenconfronted with the face of the female of the speciesencroaching onmen’s sacredgroundas that is surelynotgoodformen’shealth!Men throughout theworldare facing thedilemma in thatour childhoodheroesarebeing infiltratedbywomen.TheBBC has announced that the lead role in British sci-fitelevisionseriesDoctorWhowillbeplayedbyawomanforthefirsttimeinitsmorethan50-yearhistory.IfirmlybelievethatJodieWhittaker,asthefirstfemaleDrWho, is just part of a massive continuing drive to oustthose daredevil champions of our early comic readingyears-ouridolswhorodeintodangeronawhitehorseorleaped tall buildings in a single bound and saved the fairmaiden, or the poor farmer, or released a town from thehands of a cruel gangster and his team of thugs. Theyrounded up the crooks or the cattle rustlers and single-handedlycorralledtheminthetownjailandhandedthemover to a grateful sheriff. Or, in the case of the widowtrying to manage a ranch after her husband had beenbrutallykilled,ourheroesmusteredandbrandedthestraycattle, repairedmiles of fencing andwould only accept aheartymealaspayment.I ask, who will be the next of our idols to fall? ThePhantom?TheLoneRangerandhistrustysidekickTonto?The Cisco Kid and Pancho? And what has happened toBigglesandTarzan?

What is happening to ourmemories ofthose pillars of the sporting world, Richie Benaud andFosterWilliams?Thisdrivehasalso careened into theoutbackwhereourlegendsareunderpressurefromthefemaleofthespecies.The empire that was pioneered by Sir Sidney Kidman,commencingwhen,at14,heleftGawleronCyclops,aone-eyedhorse,fivebobinhispocketandadreamtobuildthegreatestAustralian cattlebusinessonly tobeboughtoutbycashedupminerGinaReinhardt.Howcanwearrestthesemassivechanges?Whatwillitdoto young minds struggling with puberty and trying tograpplewithTonyAbbott,DonaldTrump,Brexit,andtheAFLladderwhentheirchildhoodheroesturntoheroines?I discussed this dilemma at length with OBE recipientBarrie Mills who has a real concern about the future ofGingerMeggsandMickeyMousewithtwoMinnieslurkinginthebackground.

Batwomanand Catwoman in their figure hugging lycra or WonderWomaninherflimsyoutfitaretemptingeasilyimpressedyoungmindstomoveawayfromtheexcitementofBatmanandRobincontinuingtofightcrimeinGothamCity.Superman and Batman now have to contend withSuperwoman and Batwoman with Wonder Womanthrown in for good measure! Steve Reeves and AdamWestwouldturnoverintheirgravesiftheywereawareofwhat is happening in the world of superheroes.Superheroesaremorphing into superheroines. Why shouldallheroesbewhitemales?Why can't they be female, or of a different skin colour?Whatmessagedoes this send totheyoungpeople today?THINK OF THE FUTURE! Superwoman is Superman'scousin, and she is awesome! WonderWoman stands forTruthandJusticeandprovestogirlseverywherethatyoudon't need to be a boy in order to stand up to hate anduglinessandinjusticeintheworld. GalGodot,theactresswhoplaysWonderWoman,servedintheIsraeliArmy.Sheisjustasabletokeepupwiththeboysashercharacter.This is 2017, andwe should be celebrating the fact thatwomenarestartingtoberepresentedinpopculture!!Those young minds trying to grapple with Tony Abbott,DonaldTrump,Brexit and theAFLwill be comforted thatthere are childhood heroes (and the makers behind theheroes)notafraidtokeepupwiththetimesandbemoreinclusive of everyone. If people like Donald Trump hadbeen exposed to heroes like the female Phantom, or afemale Dr Who, or Wonder Woman, then just maybe hewouldnotbethemisogynistic,sexist,narrow-mindedtrollthatheistoday,whojudgeswomenpurelybyappearanceandhowtheyareabletobeusedbyhim.(Wow!-wheredid that come from? It sounds just like the LoneRangerandTontoroundinguptherustlers.)
