That’s our theme for this issue of Mount magazine. Our cover depicts a once-in-a-lifetime experience we all shared at last year’s Pops Concert. Circumstances cre-ated a scheduling problem and the music department opted to perform the Pops only once rather the traditional two concert format. The depart-ment’s director, Marc Blanch-ette ’76, also elected to hold the concert outdoors on the lower field and “Pops on the Green” was born. With time, the event grew beyond our initial expectations and turned into a community-wide festival of food, fun, and music. But it was the culmination of the event that took every-one’s breath away. On a crys-tal clear beautiful May evening, Mount’s combined bands per-formed an exquisite rendition of Stars and Stripes Forever, the performance culminating in a glorious explosion of fireworks over the school. The display was visible from throughout the city of Woonsocket and was the talk of the town for weeks following. The cover photo serves as a fitting symbol of our celebration, then and now — the iconic Mount build-ing, the structure of which is instantly recognizable to so many, basking in the glow of fireworks. The photo becomes a visual representation of all that Mount stands for, of all

of which we all are so proud, of all that we celebrate — not the building, but all that happens in the building day in and day out, all that has happened since 1924, and all the good that has come from you, Mount’s graduates, as you “share your gifts and talents with others” and make the world a better place each and every day. This is what we celebrate — you and all that you are and all that you have become — because you are Mount. At the dedication of the school in 1924, Bishop Hickey, the founding Bishop, spoke these words: “Here stands the College of Mount Saint Charles, a magnifi-cent building, a building which, I hope, will last until the end of time, built in the best manner, honestly and according to the best plans for accommodation of students and teachers, a building which will inspire faith, energy, and charity of all people of understanding who work for the common good. This college will be a monument, an everlast-ing sermon; beyond the horizon of Woonsocket it will be a force-ful reminder of God’s truth.” And so, my dear fellow alumni and friends of Mount, that is what we celebrate, for indeed, over the many years, through many changes of time and history and circumstance, Mount has indeed stood strong in its conviction.

The building has endured, but more importantly, Mount’s influence has reached “be-yond the horizon of Woon-socket” because of you. For you are the ones who have gone forth to work for the common good and have been in your own lives “a forceful reminder of God’s truth.” Join with us in this year of celebration of our 85th an-niversary. Celebrate with us 85 years of “excellence in all things,” 85 years of education in the tradition of the Broth-ers of the Sacred Heart, 85 years of instilling in young men and women a spiritual-ity of the Heart of Christ, a spirituality that inspires mercy, forgiveness, compas-sion, understanding, patience, and peace in all that we do.Let us celebrate together from near and far — for we are Mount! Excelsior!

M E S S A G E F R O M T H E P R I N C I P A L

Dear Friends of Mount,

I would like to begin by extending my warmest greetings to the alumni of

Mount Saint Charles Academy and assure you that my intent is to continue the great tradi-tion of academic excellence in a caring, compassionate and challenging environment. Although I am not an alum-nus, I have come to know Mount as a second home, and that is not because I spend so much time here as Principal, but rather because of the great men and women who now occupy and have occu-pied this building. With your continued support and assis-tance our students will expe-rience the opportunity to become people of faith who use their talents and intellects to serve others. I will do my very best to live this mission of the school and provide our students with the tools they need to meet their personal goals. Reflecting on the many accomplishments of our alum-ni gives us great cause to cele-brate. During the first week of school I had occasion to visit with an alumnus who I had some years ago as a student. This young man is presently serving the country in our armed forces and is preparing to deploy to Iraq. The boy I knew in class developed a great maturity of life and con-tinues to model the tremen-dous character I observed in him back in the classroom. He now leads soldiers in his pla-toon and prepares them for the duties they will face over-seas. We have so many great

men and women who have left us and continue to influ-ence the lives of others, who live the mission of the school and live lives of service. Of course not everyone puts life in harms way as a member of the armed forces, but each of you, in your own special way, models the values we hold dearly. Mount Saint Charles has much to celebrate in the people who have taken the seeds of wisdom and experi-ences gained from their time with us and have nurtured and cultivated them to bring great hope to the world. Whether serving your families as parents, serving the com-munity as nurses, therapists, doctors and law enforcement officers, or serving young people as educators, counsel-ors or coaches, Mount alumni have the opportunity to bring the Gospel values to all those with whom they have contact. We continue to instill in our young people the impor-tance of service through their religion classes, school wide projects and community out-reach programs. All of these initiatives have as their focus the example of Jesus Christ who calls each of us to love one another. In his most recent encyclical, “Caritas in Veritate,” Pope Benedict writes about the importance of loving and serving our neighbor in Truth. He says, “practising charity in truth helps people to understand that adhering to the values of Christianity is not merely use-ful but essential for building a good society and for true integral human development.”(p. 2) As a

school community we accept that challenge of the Church’s mission and within the Tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart to build up our society and to advance the dignity of the human per-son. “The more we strive to secure a common good cor-responding to the real needs of our neighbours, the more effectively we love them. Every Christian is called to practise this charity, in a man-ner corresponding to his vocation….”(p. 4) Reading this I was reminded of the many gifts that we have experi-enced as a community, and also of the great responsibility we have to share those gifts with our world. Our alumni are a treasure not only to our school community but to the greater community. Your example and presence in the workforce allows you the opportunity to bring the mes-sage of hope and compassion to those individuals you meet and work with every day. Together we can make our world a better place. Loved be the heart of Jesus.

For forty years, Richard Lawrence has been teach-ing and coaching generations of students at Mount Saint Charles. In 1969, when Mount was still an all-boy boarding school, Mr. Lawrence joined

the staff to teach English and to coach soccer and basket-ball. He continued coaching Varsity Boys Soccer from until 1990 and retired at the end of 20 years, having won more games and more league championships than any other soccer coach in the history of the Rhode Island Interscho-lastic League. From 1974 to 2003, he coached the Varsity Boys Tennis Team, to 318 wins and 85 losses. Since 2001, he has coached the Varsity Girls Tennis Team to 60 consecu-tive league wins—the 8th longest streak on the national level. During this time, the girl’s tennis team has won 10 Division I State titles and 6

State Championships. As Mount’s Athletic Di-rector for the past 36 years, he is only one of two nation-ally certified Athletic Direc-tors in RI and was recently honored for thirty-five years

of outstanding service by the National Athletic Adminis-trator’s Association. In 1974, when he first began his tenure as Athletic Director, there were roughly twelve teams at Mount. Today, the program has more than quadrupled in size, with 53 teams and over 70 coaches! The expansion of the school’s new gym, locker rooms, and classrooms and the future plans for additional playing fields, new ice arena and new tennis courts will continue to alleviate the increasing de-mand for more space to accom-modate the growing number of teams. On the personal side, he has coached and played tennis

with all six of his children since they were two years old. Christian ’90 played soc-cer and tennis for his father and went on to play ten-nis for four years at Seton Hall University. He and wife Kimberly have two children (Drew-5 and Julia-2) and live in Plympton, MA. Kirsten’92 lives in Oakland, CA and is married to Scott Fawver. She played for her father and went on to play Division II Tennis at Saint Anselm College. Jessica ’95 played Varsity Tennis for four years and also went on to Saint Anselm College and played for four years on the Women’s Team. Jessica lives in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Alexandra ’09 played on three state champi-onship tennis teams at Mount has followed in the footsteps of her older sisters will play tennis at Saint Anselm College. Meryl ’11 is playing #2 singles on the Mount team and has been on the team since her freshman year. And last but not least — Jacob (MSC ’18) likes all sports and plays soc-cer, basketball, baseball and of course, tennis. His father also coaches him on all of his teams in his home town of Glocester, RI. Incidentally, when Jacob graduates, Mr. Lawrence will have been at Mount Saint Charles Academy for fifty years! Now that will be the end of an era!

hockey. Charlie is now working on a

complete history of Mount hockey and

20’s to the 60’s) or memorabilia that

former players might have. He can usu-

We would like to introduce the Mount Saint Charles Academy Alumni Directory project, the most comprehensive directory of Mount alumni ever published. The contents of the directory will be divided into four sections: Biographical, Geographical, Class Roster, and most importantly the Introductory Section showcasing our school’s history and events. All efforts are being made to contact Mount alumni via phone, email, and mail to obtain and verify biographical information.

Mount has contracted with Alumni Research, Inc. to collect and compile the information into a hardbound, library quality volume and an online community. This directory is being made available to Mount alumni only, is a limited edition press run and offered one time only. Alumni Research, Inc. will soon be contact-ing those who have provided current telephone numbers and addresses to verify biographical information. Please help your alma mater to keep in touch with you.

YES!! It is that time again. Christmas Concert 2009 will once again feature the Mount Alumni Band. Every four years since 1981, we have had an Alumni Band for our Christmas concert. This will be the eighth time we assemble this great (and not so great) group of musi-cians. We started by adding a few alumni to the senior band and now we have a separate band for the alumni. In 2001 and 2005 we had just over a 100 member alumni band. We would like representatives from all classes. Our old-timer award went to drummer Lee Gallagher ’33. The 1960’s were well represented by people such as James Mullin ‘61, George Lessard ’62, Al Violette ’64, and Mike Neville ’66. The 1970’s include: Henry Morel ‘70, Phil Desrosiers ‘71, Paul Lessard ‘74, Marcia De-grange Pelletier ’75, Eric Hamel ‘78 and Dave Ward

2009 MSC Alumni Band Concert‘79. The 1980’s include Ann Beth Carey ’82, Nathaniel Hefferman ’82, Mike Carey ’85, Chris Mosca ’87, Chris-tine Eldridge ’87, Edgar Lecuyer ’88, Chris Dumas ’89 Kim Roberge Dumas ’89 and Chris Johnson ‘89. The 1990’s and 2000’s are obviously very well represented. Now all we need is you!!! On Saturday evening December 19 we will hold a short rehearsal followed by a reception with plenty of time to socialize. The concert will take place on Sunday afternoon December 20 at 2:00 PM. An informational letter will be sent in early October. Contact all your friends and talk it up on FACEBOOK. Let’s have a 120 piece band representing as many classes as possible!!!

For more information contact Marc Blanchette ‘76at 401-769-0310 x 112.

Mount Saint Charles is the small school win-ner of the first Chal-lenge Cup sponsored by the RIIL and Cox Communications. This award, presented at the Providence Per-forming Arts Center in June, is given to a school which demon-strates outstanding success on the athletic field -- and does it with a consistent demonstration of good sportsmanship. At that same award cer-emony, seven of our outstanding scholar athletes - Alexandra Lawrence, Brittany Dickie, Eliza Foresti, Molly Silven, Kyle Beauchamp, Owen Jacobs and Colin Russell; Coach Bill Belisle; and members of the five state championship teams - girls' tennis, boys hockey, competition cheerleading, boys' volleyball and baseball were also honored at the annual Cox Sports Awards Night. Benefactors can realize significant tax efficiencies while simultaneously sup-

porting Mount Saint Charles Academy. Knowing how to give efficiently and with the greatest benefit for both the donor and Mount is key to devising any planned giving strategy. Successful giving, especially in the case of wealthy donors and their often complex assets, means matching the right charitable vehicle with an appropriately valued asset, whether it’s appreciated stock, cash, real estate or elite collections of art, automobiles or other property. With a strategy that fits your individual situation, the assets you donate will not become subject to wealth-depleting tax penalties.

Who gives?

The vast majority of American households give to charities and philanthropic causes each year. And each year, Ameri-cans typically donate more than the year before. Giving USA estimates that total con-tributions from individuals and corporations topped $300 bil-lion in 2007, the first time that mark was surpassed.1 Overall, roughly the same percentages of wealthy, middle class and poor give to charity, and each group contributes a similar amount of household income: 1.5% to 2.5%. However,

wealthy donors differ in how they give, because they simply have different types of wealth to offer that work well with different kinds of philanthropic vehicles.2 1 http://www.givingusa.org/press_releases/releas-es/20080622.html 2 http://www.gener-ousgiving.org/page.asp?sec=4&page=161#307

Strategies for Giving

Charitable remainder trusts (CRTs), charitable lead trusts (CLTs), and charitable gift annuities (CGAs) are just some of the strategic options open to wealthy and affluent donors. Matching the right vehicle to a donor’s wealth is the key to successful giving and sound personal wealth management.

CRTs are irrevocable trusts that generate a payment stream to the donor and give the assets (e.g., financial assets,) to a charity or chari-ties once the non-charitable interest ceases. For example, a donor may stipulate that he or she receive 6% a year from the trust as long as he or she lives, and the same for his or her spouse, after which time the remaining assets are trans-ferred to Mount.

CLTs enable donors to plan for the transfer of assets as well as support Mount. They are especially useful when

funded with assets the donor anticipates will grow over time—either because of the assets’ potential or a current value that may be considered depreciated. You can name Mount as one of the charities as income beneficiaries of your irrevocable CLT, and the trust then makes payments to the school over a predetermined period of time. Depending on the type of CLT you create, when the trust terminates your heirs may receive the trust assets at their then- market value without further transfer tax liabilities.

CGAs are contractual ar-rangements between a donor and Mount. The donor agrees to transfer assets (cash, stocks or other assets accepted by the charity) to Mount in exchange for a guaranteed lifetime income, typically for the donor or for the donor and spouse. As in the other techniques, the transfer of ap-preciated assets will not result in capital gains recognition for the donor at the time of sale.

An effective charitable giving program can provide not only a high level of personal satisfac-tion, but also some significant financial gains for the donor and his or her family.
