Iremember very distinctly sit-ting in the elementary school auditorium for my son’s kin-

dergarten graduation. He and his classmates sat proudly on stage wearing their graduation caps while on the wall behind them words proclaimed “Congratula-tions to the Class of 2000!” It was 1988 and the year 2000, the year he would graduate from high school, seemed so far off. This fall, as we have begun our 89th year here at Mount, we welcomed students into our 7th grade who have become the first members of our graduating class of 2018. The majority of these young men and women were born in the year 2000! Truly we are immersed in the business of 21st Century education as all of our graduates, beginning with this year’s 7th graders, will have been born in the 21st Century. The last of our students born in the 1900’s are members of this year’s 8th grade class. Our 7th graders don’t re-member a world without Smart phones, I-pads, I-pods, the inter-net, YouTube and Twitter. None of them have personal recollection of the events of September 11, 2001. Their grandparents went to Woodstock and served in the Viet Nam Conflict. The race to the moon and the Kennedy assassina-tions are ancient history to them. Our school has entered the era where we are not only pre-paring our students for lives and careers in the 21st Century but are educating students who have not lived any portion of their lives in any other century but the 21st. With the passing of each year, it becomes more critical for us to

adapt our infrastructure and our methods to this new century. The future is indeed now. Last year at this time I wrote of the beginning of an ambitious project — the modernization of all of our classrooms. Through the generosity of many donors, that dream is closer to reality as our entire 3rd floor has now been completely renovated. Gone are the wainscoting and slate boards familiar to so many of us who have sat in these classrooms during our school’s first 88 years. In their place are the white boards and interactive projectors and other technology that a 21st century education demands. We have taken a very giant step into our future. The bricks that form the outer structure of our building were laid in the early 1920’s. Those same bricks remain and now form the shell that houses our new class-rooms, labs, and locker rooms — both those completed and those yet to be renovated. So as we move into our future, we recog-nize that it is a future firmly rooted in a rich past. And as we modern-ize our inner structure, the outer structure and main inner beams that support the structure remain firmly in place. So, too, is it true of the educational experience that is the Mount experience. Though there is an absolute need for 21st Century instructional methods and curriculum, there remains a need for the values that are at the basis of education in the tradi-tion of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Ours is and always will be an education of the whole person, rooted in Catholic Christian values

and the Gospel message of love of God and neighbor. The character-istics of an education in a Brothers of the Sacred Heart school remain — a spirituality of the heart of Christ; integration of faith and life; a spirit of community; formation of the whole person; a special con-cern of the poor and neglected; availability; and an ordered and structured environment. The world changes around us at an ever-increasing pace. The lives of the young men and women entrusted to our care today are vastly different than the lives of students 20, 30, and 40 years ago. But respect, kindness, compassion, concern for others, and social justice are as important now as they ever were. These are the bricks on which we build the Mount experience as we move boldly into our future to meet the needs of 21st Century students, a future firmly rooted in a long and proud tradition. I hope that you will continue to celebrate our shared past and I invite you to partner with us in building a new and exciting future.

Excelsior!

Another school year has begun for us and we are as excited as ever to wel-

come both our new members to the school community and the stu-dents who are returning. As they enter Mount this year, they will see the benefits of much effort and hard work that was done this sum-

mer to bring change to the school. While change is often difficult for those who experience it, I believe that it is through constructive change such as this that growth occurs. Realizing that some would like to preserve as much of the an-tiquity of the building as possible, to bring state of the art technology and to improve systems requires a complete renovation. One small example is the benefit of intro-ducing wireless systems in the school. With the former walls it was impossible for signals to travel, but with the new construction, it becomes possible to incorporate other forms of technology. We are most grateful to all of the benefactors who contributed to the project to renovate class-rooms. While we remove ele-ments of the Mount that was, we

are moving towards a 21st century experience for our teachers and students. Each of us knows that students today are engrossed in a world of technology. Numerous articles in educational media point to the need to transform schools into modern learning spaces. Educators are increasingly chal-

lenged to engage students through technological tools with which they are so familiar. Further, we con-tinue our mission and are commit-ted to preparing our students for the roles they will play when they leave Mount. Just as the college and business environment adapts to modern approaches, our task is to help prepare our students for those changing conditions. We do so through the classrooms of today that are rich with technology. Mount has also launched a new website which has enabled teachers to communicate in vari-ous ways through individual class portals. Teachers were given train-ing through the summer on the uses of the new portals. They have designed channels unique to their instructional needs and planned applications for their classes which

incorporate the new design. For each teacher, the challenge is to utilize the tools so they best complement the curriculum in place and find ways to include new lessons. Our tradition of academic excellence continues, and proudly we say that our students leave Mount with a strong foundation to succeed in college. Recent alumni frequently return and share their stories with us about their posi-tive transition to undergraduate study. For those who prepared well and who took advantage of the opportunities available to them at Mount, life is filled with great experiences and rewards. Hap-pily, they report that while they miss the community of Mount, they bring their experiences here with them wherever they go. The Mount tradition changes the world a little bit at a time.

Loved be the Heart of Jesus.

O ver the summer, a new chapter in Fr. Brian Sistare’s life began as

well as a new chapter in the history of Mount Saint Charles. On July 1st, Fr. Sistare’s assignment as Mount’s new school chaplain officially began. A native of Westerly, RI, Fr. Sistare belonged to St. Claire’s in Misqua-micut and served as an altar boy. Even though it was here where the seeds were planted that he wanted to join the religious life, Fr. Sistare found himself getting away from the faith when he was in high school. After experiencing his tri-als, tribulations, and temptations throughout high school, Fr. Sistare enrolled at the University of Rhode Island. In February of 1993, second semester of his freshman year, he attended a religious re-treat. Fr. Sistare said, “I had gotten away from the faith, so it makes no sense why I participated. I still ask myself to this day, ‘Why did I go? Why did I say yes?’ The only answer I can come up with is that God directly intervened, and my attendance at the retreat can be attributed completely to Him.” Following the retreat, a very dear friend of Fr. Sistare’s passed away that April. Father said, “The influx of support from my parents and priests who stuck by me through my friend’s death,

coupled with my experiences as an altar boy and at the retreat, I felt the calling to the priesthood. I was 19.” Fr. Sistare transferred out of URI to the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio where he

received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1996. He then started visit-ing different religious communities and at 22 decided he wanted to join the Community of Franciscans of the Renewal in New York. “I liked their simplicity of life. They don’t use microwaves, TVs, or

dishwashers, and they even sleep on the floor. They work with the homeless and the poor, and they also do a lot of work with youth. I was drawn to how completely devoted they are to the Church, the Catholic faith, and the charism of their order.” Fr. Sistare took his final vows as a Franciscan in 2001. In 2003, he received his Master’s of Divinity from Saint Joseph Seminary and

was ordained to the Holy Priest-hood on May 17, 2003 by Edward Cardinal Egan at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. He spent 14 years with the Franciscans, doing work in Harlem, the Bronx and Yonkers, New York, as well as in Central America. Not being able to consistently give the Sacraments, such as mar-riage and baptism, Fr. Sistare was eager to be in a parish. He came back to RI in February of 2010 and was assigned to St. Philip’s in Greenville. He became incarnat-ed as a diocesan priest and was able to immerse himself in the full parish life. He was at Saint Philip’s until this past June and was then re-assigned as the part-time Assistant Pastor at Saint Rocco’s in Johnston, RI in conjunction with his assignment as Mount’s chaplain. “I am really excited to be here for the kids at Mount on the Sacramental level through Mass and Confession,” Fr. Sistare said. “I also want to be someone the kids can come to, talk to, and I want to be someone they can trust.”

Welcome to Mount, Fr. Sistare!

The Mount Saint Charles Academy Class of 2012 gradu-ated from MSC’s Brother Ad-elard Arena on Sunday, June 3rd. There were 196 students graduating (including 5 interna-tional students), making this the largest graduating class in Mount Saint Charles history! The top 3 students for this year’s graduat-ing class were: Benjamin Swiszcz, Dylan Schaffer, and Daniel Cahaly. Daniel Cahaly, son of Eloise and John Cahaly of Hopkinton, MA, served as Master of Cer-emonies. Benjamin Swiszcz, son of Monique and Brian Swiszcz of Cumberland, presented the valedictory address, and Dylan Schaffer, son of Susan and Gary Schaffer of Cumberland gave the salutatory address. Father Charlie Quinn delivered his last invocation as Mount’s chaplain before retir-ing in June. Principal Edwin Burke offered greetings to the class and

presented the graduates. Most senior awards and honors were given out on the evening of Friday, June 1st during Academic Convo-cation. However, the top 2 senior awards of the Academy were presented at the end of Mount’s graduation ceremony . The 2012 Excelsior Award re-cipient was Mount’s Class of 2012

Salutatorian, Dylan Schaffer . The All Mountie Award recipient was Academic Convo-cation’s Master of Ceremonies and Student Activities Council President, Connor McCarty. There were some very interest-ing facts about Mount’s Class of 2012! The Valedic-torian’s (Benjamin

Swiszcz) mother, Monique (Robi-doux) Swiszcz, was Valedictorian of her 1980 class here at Mount. There were also 3 sets of twins graduating: Emily and Olivia Hen-dricks, Jason and Leah Meehan, and Caitlyn and Allison Shea. The Shea’s father, Stephen, is a teacher at Mount and has been here for 38 years (since 1974).

I f you were to walk down the main floor of MSC, before reaching the junior high locker

room you would find yourself at one last office on the right side of the corridor. It’s the office of a man who is always smiling, loves a good joke, and is known to prank a co-worker or two! He is a kind man, willing to lend a hand at a moment’s notice, but above all he is very humble. If you looked through the doorway, you might see a white hard hat inscribed with the name “Brother Roland,” the only evidence of the countless hours he has logged while supervising the many major renovations the school has undergone over the last few years. The office you find yourself in that of Brother Roland Champagne, SC. Originally from Lewiston, Maine, Brother Roland is 1 of 3 chil-dren, and after his 8th grade gradu-ation, he left home at the age of 13 to join the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Brother Roland recalls that, “I liked the way they lived their lives. So when a recruiter asked me if I had ever con-sidered being a Brother, I seriously contemplated it. Right after I gradu-ated from 8th grade, I left to join the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at the House of Forma-tion in Harrisville, RI. Even though it’s the only life I have ever known, I have never regretted my decision for a minute.” Brother Roland professed his first vows in 1965 and took his final vows in 1971. Since taking his vows, he has performed mission work in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and in Kenya, Africa, where he taught

young Brothers in formation how to prepare simple meals. Brother Roland has also done a great deal of work with the Broth-ers of the Sacred Heart schools. From 1977-1982, Brother Roland served as Assistant Principal here at Mount for grades 7-9. He was then assigned as Assis-tant Principal to Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, New Hampshire from 1982-1988. In 1988, he returned to Mount and served in his previous Assistant Principal position. In 1992, Broth-er Roland headed back to Bishop Guertin where he was Property Manager until 1999. From 1999-2004, Brother Roland served at St. Columba’s College in England as Clerk of the Works (the equivalent to his Property Manager position at B.G.) during which time he oversaw

the construction of two new buildings. In 2004, Brother

Roland once again returned to Mount for his third as-signment here. In these past eight years, he has served as Director of Facilities at MSC.

His responsibilities include direct responsibility for the general upkeep of the building, supervising the cleaning contractor throughout the year, and seeing to all maintenance and repairs. The next part of Brother Roland’s story is where his white hard hat comes into the picture. Since coming back to Mount as the Director of Facilities, Brother Roland has been tasked with the

responsibility of super-vising all of the many renova-tion projects that have been

undertaken at Mount. It is his job to ensure that construction occurs in a timely manner and remains on schedule, and is performed effi-ciently and correctly. The first major project he was responsible for was the creation of the new 5 floor

west stairwell that leads from the ground floor to the 4th floor classrooms. He also directed the third floor west wing renovation which included the construction of the new media lab, modernization of classrooms 318 and 320, and the creation of the Academic Support Center. He also supervised the construction of the new library media room, and the renovation of all three of the stu-dent locker rooms on the first floor. Brother Roland directed the installation of the new floors and a suspended ceiling on the ground floor, the replacement of the floor in the cafeteria, and the complete renovation (including new lights, ceilings, flooring, and sprinkler system) of rooms 001 and 003. Br. Roland’s responsibilities as Director of Facilities extend be-yond the main school building. He directed the replacement of the main steam line and return line that supply heat to the school from the boiler room; as well a new waterline that leads to the Brother Adelard Hockey Arena. Brother Roland also managed the installation of the new sprinkler system in the hockey arena as well as the installa-

10

tion of new underground water line to supply the system. Brother Roland’s most recent responsibility was oversight of the third floor classroom modernization project. For the past two summers, a selection of classrooms have been gutted and totally reconstructed. This summer, thanks to a plethora of designated donations, fundrais-ing events, and a last minute gift of $200,000, the remaining 9 class rooms on Mount’s third floor were renovated, updated, and completely modernized. Especially thanks to Brother Roland, this project was completed in plenty of time for classes to begin in August. Brother Roland has also been directing efforts to make our nearly 100-year-old building more en-ergy efficient. In order for this to be accomplished, Mount’s heating system has been converted from oil burning heat to a gas heat which is expected to decrease the school’s heating bill by about 50%. Each of the new classrooms has also been equipped with energy efficient windows and lights and new heating elements. In addition to the huge class-

room renovations

project and the boiler conversion project, there were other con-struction projects Brother Roland managed around the Mount campus this summer, including the comple-tion of the renovation of the junior high school’s locker room with the addition of new energy efficient windows and a new floor; also the infamous stairs leading from the main campus down to the hockey arena were completely demolished and replaced. All of these responsibilities and the countless projects being under-taken demand innumerable hours of work. Brother Roland is on-sight throughout the summer while most of the staff is enjoying vacation. Often he is working during evenings and on weekends while remaining on-call 24 hours a day. His dedica-tion, diligence, and almost boundless energy are great gifts to the school, its students, and its staff. Brother Roland reflected that, “My job is very challenging work. I have to supervise and direct all ac-tivities of the maintenance depart-ment and when they’re on campus, the construction crews. But it’s ex-citing times right now because of all

of the future possibilities and future renovations to the building. Plus, we are able to bring more technology into the classrooms which is such a great advantage to our students.” As far as the future, Brother Roland hopes to soon be direct-ing construction of Mount’s tennis court complex, for which ground-breaking is hoped in the fall. Brother Roland, with an ever-present smile, continues to look ahead and, with the School Board and school President, plan for the future. “In addition to the tennis courts, we want to look at the possibility of a new building entrance near the sophomore locker room. As far as other long range planning and future projects, it all depends on what the needs of the students and the school are.” School President Herve Richer jokingly adds that, “Br. Roland is not permitted to retire or to be reassigned for the next five years. I need him to direct the modernization of the remainder of our classrooms and to bring to frui-tion our five-year renovation plan.” So until ground breaks on the new tennis courts, Brother Roland (and his hard hat!) can take a much deserved rest after all of the amaz-

ing work and leadership he has given to the Mount com-munity and our beloved school. He can rest, that is, until the next problem crops up and his phone rings. With a smile and good humor and great diligence, he will respond quickly and the school will never miss a beat.

On Friday, September 7th, representatives from Mount Saint Charles Academy presented Oscar

“Gus” Galipeau with his Hall of Fame Induction Award at Trinity Health and Rehabilitation. Since Gus was not able to attend the Hall Fame Induction Ceremony held in April at Mount Saint Charles, Mount went to Gus to formally and of-ficially present him with his award. Gus is one of the most versatile athletes ever to play for Mount Saint

Charles Academy. During his career, he was a First Team All-Stater in hockey and baseball. He was a hard-

hitting defen-seman who led the 1938, 1939, and 1940 hockey teams to the All New Eng-land States and Na-tional titles. He played professional hockey for the Cleveland Barons of the Ameri-can Hockey League and

the Minneapolis Millers of the United States Hockey League. He was an outstanding All-State baseball catcher with a batting aver-age of .579. He was signed by the Saint Louis Cardinals and assigned to play for the Rochester Cardinals. In 1942, Gus was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as the crew chief on a B-26 Bomber stationed

in England. After being discharged, he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Nashua team with Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Don New-comb. In 1952, he became coach of Mount’s hockey team. He left coaching to become a Woonsocket Police Officer. The Athletic Hall of Fame publicly recognizes and celebrates individuals who best exemplify the spirit and mission of Mount through their athletic involvement, high degree of excellence on the playing field and have been a source of pride to the school and the com-munity. Herve Richer, President of Mount Saint Charles Academy, said, “Gus Galipeau certainly epitomizes all of the qualities which our Hall of Fame seeks to celebrate. Through his athletic accomplishments, his service to our country, and his years of dedication as a public servant, Gus Galipeau represents all those qualities which we hope all of our graduates will emulate. Mount is proud of Gus, is happy to accord him this overdue honor, and I hope his example will inspire another generation of Mount students.”

Fr. Charlie Quinn was appointed to Mount to serve as the school chap-lain in 1982. That same school year, Fr. Charlie coached the co-ed 8th grade junior high soccer team. His associa-

tion with Mount junior high soccer would last for 29 years, during which time he coached hundreds of boys as Mount’s beloved junior high boys’ soccer coach. Fr. Charlie resigned as chaplain in

1987 to accept the pastorate of St. Raymond’s Parish in Providence, but he remained at Mount as the junior high soccer coach. Twenty years later, in 2007, at which time he was still serving as soccer coach, Fr. Charlie retired as an active diocesan priest and returned to Mount to once again serve as school chaplain, a position he held until his health forced him to truly retire in 2012. Mount is extremely grateful for his many years of dedicated and humble service to our students, faculty, and families. We know that he will find his way back to the campus from time to time to keep a careful eye the junior high boys soccer team and to check in on his boys.

Keith Pace, Class of 2000, and his wife Nicki had Father Charlie baptize their twin daughters, Kennedie and McKenna. The Paces currently live in Illinois.

Good Luck in Your Retirement, Father Charlie!

“Thanks for all you have contributed to the MSC

community as our chaplain, soccer coach, and friend.

We’ll miss you Father Charlie!”

Robert Trap Yates, MSC Class of 2010, was honored by the Presi-dent of Princeton University at the Princeton Opening Ceremonies with the George B. Wood Legacy Sophomore Prize. He was 1 of 7 students at the university who were recognized for their academic achievement. Trap was award with the George B. Wood Legacy Prize which is given to a member of the current junior class in acknowl-edgement of his/her extraordinary academic achievement during their sophomore year at Princeton. Currently, Trap lives in Sutton, Massachusetts and is a Bachelor of Arts candidate. He is majoring in Sociology and also pursuing certifi-cates in Urban Studies, and values

and public life. Over the summer, Trap interned with Ashoka, a social entrepreneurship organization in India. Trap was part of a team that had to create a plan to make housing and home construction/improvements affordable in India. Trap’s mom, Brenda, wrote a note to MSC telling us of this great news. She said, “I am writing this letter to first share some wonderful news from Trap Yates that reflects so beautifully on the wonderful education and preparation that he received from all of the staff at Mount Saint Charles Academy, and

secondly to thank all of you for the incredible preparation that you gave to both our sons during their time at Mount Saint Charles Academy...we are very grateful to all of the staff at Mount who did such an amazing job to prepare both Trap and Andrew for their collegiate journey.” Congratulations Trap!

trap Yates, Class of 2010, Presented with Prestigious Princeton award

Every year, Brown University selects up to 6 RI students from Providence College, Rhode Island

College, and the Univer-sity of Rhode Island (with a maximum of 2 students per col-lege) to circum-vent Brown’s medical school admissions process, includ-

ing the MCATs, and secure a spot in Brown’s medical school upon their college graduation. Students who are enrolled in their sophomore year are eligible to apply and be considered for this Early Identification Program at Brown. Once accepted, not only do students have to complete the

matthew Santos, Class of 2010, accepted early into brown medical School

necessary prerequisite courses, but they also have to maintain a 3.0 GPA through the rest of their undergrad-uate careers. One of the students accepted into the program this year was MSC’s very own Mountie alumnus, Matthew Santos. Matthew has wanted to be a doctor since he was in the 4th grade, so his early acceptance into Brown’s medical school certainly fulfilled a lifelong dream. In July, he came home from a 3 week study abroad program in Copenhagen, Denmark where he took a Human Health and Disease course at the Danish Institute. This program also allowed Matthew to take a 5 day medical study tour in Berlin, Germany. Matthew is part of PC’s Liberal

Arts Program. In addition to major-ing in Biology, he is also majoring in English. Congratulations Matthew!

Trap is pictured here amongst fellow students recognized for their achievements. Trap is standing all the way to the right of the photo. Next to him, on the left, is Valerie Smith, Dean of the College. Left of Smith is Princeton President, Shirley M. Tilghman
