Spring Dyno Day at Performance Dyno in Loudon, NH is always one of

my favorite kick-off to each new Muscle Car season. Normally it means

meeting up with my NH Mustang Club family and talking Stangs, but

this year was a bit different. Not only did we open up the event to an

awesome new club called Mustangs of Massachusetts, but we also had a

wide array of GM and Mopar participants that came to spin the wheel and

tally up some horsepower.

From the Chevrolet camp, a Corvette C6 Z06 made an impressive show,

drawing a crowd, as well as taking a few lucky bystanders for a rather

quick trip “around the block”.

The Pontiac fans had a couple representatives in the form of a 2006 GTO

that more than held its own and an absolutely immaculate, low mileage

WS6 Trans Am that posted 313rwhp on a basically stock car. That’s pretty

impressive right out of the box.

Mopar guys definitely stood proud as a brand new Challenger SRT

392 Hemi popped the hood to reveal a new addition to the engine

compartment, in the form of a Procharger. With nearly 600rwhp on tap,

I’m sure this car is an absolute blast to drive!!

And who could forget the Mustangs? With the entire day topped off with

an 800rwhp 2003 Mach 1, there was no shortage of horsepower from the

Blue oval guys. Mustangs of Massachusetts member Ansel Grose rolled

his 2008 Shelby GT500 in with nearly 800rwhp and looks to top even

that, with a little more tuning magic from Pete Johnson of Performance

Dyno later in the week.

Showing off one of the classics, George Martin of Chester, NH made

an impressive showing with his 1967 Mustang GT 390, posting

268rwhp and 327 rear wheel torque.

Out in the parking lot, the unofficial “car show” section had a couple

notables as well. A pair of spotless Saleen Convertibles made the trek

to Loudon, the first finished in True Blue and owned by Barry Crepeau.

The other Saleen was one of only eleven Saleen Cobra’s made in

2003 and was the only one finished in Zinc Yellow. This belonged to

Matt Osbourne who also had his Torch red 2003 Cobra on hand for the

crowd’s enjoyment.

In over 12 years of knowing Pete at Performance Dyno, this was

probably my favorite Dyno Day ever. It got off to a soggy start but by

late morning the parking lot was packed and there were cars all around

the building. By lunch time the dyno was in full swing and as usual,

our good friends at Domino’s Pizza in Concord, NH gave us a killer

deal on lunch. In closing the challenge was made for the Fall Dyno

day in October- Battle of the Horsepower between NH Mustang Club

and Mustangs of Massachusetts. It’s going to be a very interesting day

in October!!!

It isn’t just for MustangsAnymore Written by: Ed Yessaian

Every so often I get a customer, who has a pretty unique vehicle.

It pretty sad when they call you up for a tune and you are slightly

confused. Kevin Schwab contacted me about his 2011 Chevrolet

Colorado with a 5.3 liter LS motor in it. I knew they had an option for

the 4x4 trucks for a 5.3 V8, but was slightly confused when he said

it was a 2 wheel drive sport truck. I must have missed this one in

the 2011 Chevy Truck catalog. Kevin’s ride is equipped with a factory

installed 5.3L V8 with a 4 speed Automatic it has an extended cab

with short bed and sits slightly lower than the average Colorado with a

unique ground effects package. Most Colorado pickups barely catch

my eye, but this one really attracts my attention!

Sometime last year Kevin had his truck baseline dyno tested at Dez

Racing to see what his truck had at the rear wheels. Kevin had just

added a dual exhaust system with a set of 3 inch Jegs mufflers. After

a few pulls on Dez’s Dynojet, Kevin’s 5.3 made 240 RWHP and 245

RWTQ. Like any true racer, Kevin need a little more power. Kevin

decided to add a set of OTT Performance 1 ¾” Long Tube Header

and decided to ditch the factory clutch fan. He contacted James at

Supermodulation for a custom designed Electric Fan Conversion Kit.

The factory clutch fans robs a lot of power from the little 5.3 LS and it

seems to be relatively simple conversion. Kevin told me the hardest

part was removing the clutch fan. Kevin then proceeded to do all the

electrical hook ups and wire the factory computer to turn on & off the

fans at the appropriate temperature. Kevin contacted me looking for a

custom dyno tune and to make sure the factory E67 PCM could control

the fans.

Mike Verdolotti from Black Label Tuning and I started the tuning

process on the Colorado but ran into a little issue with our software.

Apparently, HP Tuners is a better software for this particular vehicle

with the Electric Fan Conversion, some of the tables that we needed

to change were not available in EFILive. Since we already purchased

the license to tune the vehicle from EFILive we decided to dyno tune

the truck and worry about the fan control issue later. Our first pull was

aborted early because of a lean condition, approximately 8% lean.

We have over 50 hand picked, pre-owned vehicles in stock at all times. We specialize in SUV’s and all kinds of trucks. Financing on

hand, and extended warrantys.

So, we added the appropriate amount of fuel and started to fine

tune the timing tables. After a few pulls Kevin’s Colorado really had

some impressive gains from his Electric Fan Conversion, Headers,

and Custom Dyno Tune. A healthy 307 RWHP / 331 RWTQ, that’s

an increase of 67 Horsepower and 86 FTLBs of Torque. We also

adjusted the shift firmness for the automatic transmission, torque

management, and throttle respond for the electronic gas pedal.

Even though the Dyno Tuning was complete, we still had the issue

of the electric fans not turning on properly. Mike and I sent the

tune file to EFILive and within a few days we were able to get a fix

for the fans and complete the tune for Kevin. Kevin seems to be

happy with his modifications, but was talking about a supercharger

upgrade in the future.

Precision Dyno is a completely independent dyno testing

Supercharger & Turbocharger installation packages for GM

LSX powered vehicles. We specialize in GM tuning with

Charity Challenge at New England DragwayAfter every ED DAY, I usually sit back and

say that the current year was my favorite ED

DAY ever. But this year, for 2014, I really, truly

mean that with all my heart. With 58 racers, 14

Junior Dragsters, and 31 cars in the Car Show,

this year was the biggest ED DAY in history

and set the stage for an even bigger event next

year, when we present the “10th Anniversary

of ED DAY”.

Amongst the All-Star team of racers we

had 2-time Charity Challenge Champion

Dave Nadeau and 2013 Charity Challenge

Champion Dan Christopher who also holds

the honor of fastest car in the history of ED

DAY. Trying to dethrone the two champs was

a huge “Who’s Who” of New England Dragway

starting with Fast Street Champion Bob Dugan

and his Mustang sidekick Ed Miller. Viking

Motorsports’ head honcho Scott Erickson

brought his 9 second super-Stang along with

a handful of guys to make up TEAM VIKING,

to fight for the charity winnings. When the

tire smoke eventually cleared, your Charity

Challenge winners were the following…

Charity Challenge Winner (Sponsored by

AutoPaint RI)- Robert Smith piloted his 1968

Plymouth Valiant past Runner-up and two-time

Champ Dave Nadeau, to take the top prize of

1000.00, which he will donate to a local charity

called “College for Carsten”.

Charity Challenge Runner-Up (Sponsored

By Tasca Automotive Group)- This was Dave

Nadeau’s 2nd Runner Up honor along with his

two Charity Challenge Championships. Dave’s

500.00 Runner Up prize was sent to Chiari

Awareness Foundation.

Charity Challenge Fastest Car of the Day

(Sponsored by Performance Dyno)- 2013

Charity Challenge Champion and the current

Fastest Car record holder, Dan Christopher,

blasted past his own personal record and went

almost a half second faster than his closest

competitor. With a best of 8.60 @ 158.37,

chances are that he will be holding

that top spot for a while. Dan was part of

TEAM SOUTHERN NH UNDERCAR that

chose Chiari Awareness Foundation for his

250.00 donation.

Charity Challenge Best Reaction Time

(Sponsored by Viking Motorsports)- This was

the hardest award to keep track of and Mrs

Viking Motorsports, Kelly Ericksson had her

hands full with such a fast paced day, but at

the end of it all Kelly averaged all the runs and

it was True Street 12.50 Superstar RB Phillips

in his 2012 Ford Mustang that would take the

250.00 prize, to be donated to Alzheimer’s

Awareness Foundation.

Charity Challenge Junior Dragster Champion

(Sponosred by Southern NH Undercar)- This

was the first official year of Junior Dragsters

at Charity Challenge. Although we did have

a couple kids participate last year, for 2014

the kids had their own separate ladder and

a 250.00 prize to donate to a charity of their

choice. As an added bonus the Sparago

family also donated iTunes cards for the lucky

winner. A total of 14 Juniors participated and

at the end it was Chantel Gaboriault edging

out Cam Murray for the win. Chantel chose

the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation as

the beneficiary for her winnings in memory of

Linda Lee.

Each year, since I’ve worked at Stoneham Ford’s Collision Center,

the Melkonian Family has generously donated to cover the costs

of the awards for the car show. For 2014, this sponsorship held an

especially important meaning, as it was dedicated to the memory

of owner Alan Melkonian, who passed away last summer after

a lengthy battle with ALS. Alan offered myself and many others

within the organization, the opportunity of a lifetime and supported

us every step of the way in our daily operations. One of the

greatest memories I have of Alan was when he allowed me to

take a 2013 Mustang GT 5.0 as a company car. Alan knew if I had

that car I would do my best every single day, so I wouldn’t have

to give it back. He was a mentor, a friend, and a great inspiration

to us all and I can only hope to keep his spirit alive by sharing my

passion for Ford cars and trucks! Standing proudly with their Car

BOB’S CRUISE was established in 2007

and hosts car shows and cruise nights in the

state of Massachusetts throughout the car

show season.

Robert Knight is the Founder of BOB’S

CRUISE and currently resides in

Middleboro, Massachusetts.

His car club reaches out to help area

charities and causes by hosting car shows

and cruise nights regularly that raise funds

for area children’s hospitals and help kids

with illnesses and diseases. He works with

many other car clubs across Massachusetts

who also host car shows, cruise nights and

events for charitable causes.

In 2010, he formed the Massachusetts Road

Cruise Association that now has more than

350 members. I am also a member of this

car show enthusiast organization. In less

than 6 months, this car club had more than

5000 friends on the world wide web.

In 2012, he formed New England Cruise

Nights and Events on Facebook and since

that time has hosted more than 200 car

shows and cruise nights at host sites and

locations such as, Lorenzo’s located in

Middleboro, Ma., Two Guys Smoke Shop

located in New Hampshire, Middleboro

Town Hall, Pep Boys Speed Shop located in

Raynham, Ma. and McLaughlin Chevrolet’s

annual car show event held every summer

in Mendon, Massachusetts during the month

of August.

Robert currently owns five classic cars

that are being restored at his home in

Middleboro, Ma. Much like the rest of us

classic car and truck enthusiasts we feel it

is better to build and restore our own rides

verses buying them finished. Not saying it

isn’t okay to purchase the car you love ready

to drive, but restoring them has its own

rewards too.

Robert loves to take photos of the cool cars

and trucks at these popular car shows and

cruise nights and uses this as a door opener

to try and help bring other car clubs and

organizations together to try and improve

their venues. When he isn’t doing home

PROJECT RESTORATION

It is with a saddened heart that American Classic Restorations says “Good-Bye” to one of our own with the recent passing of our auto body specialist and mechanic, ANTHONY D. MASIELLO. Tony was born on November, 3rd, 1977, and passed away in his sleep at his home on April, 14th, 2014. Tony resided in his home town of South Grafton, Massachusetts. Tony had a passion for Classic Cars and Hot Rods since he was a child. Growing up in a household with his dad, Dominic, who was, and still is, an enthusiast of this classic car culture, Tony also followed in his footsteps. Tony would receive model cars to build when he was a kid and he loved to paint everything (Orange)! Even as an adult working on his dad’s 1930, 5 Window, Model A Ford, that rolled up into the driveway of his family’s home as yellow as the coupe that appeared in the movie American Graffiti, Tony just had to paint it orange after all of the body work and mechanical work

was completed. It took Tony nearly 2 years from start to finish to complete his dad’s 1930 Hot Rod Model A Ford. The same vehicle featured as a READERS RIDE in the February Issue of Motorhead Magazine this year. Tony’s passion for classic cars and trucks was very evident while working with the crew at American Classic Restorations located in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. He enjoyed working for his boss and shop owner’s Eddie, and his wife Gail. They are both wonderful people who genuinely care about their employees and customers. They treat everyone like family and that is how Tony was treated, like family. Tony’s all-time favorite classic car is the 1967 Chevy Nova. He also loved drag racing. He even drag raced his motorcycle at the area drag ways regularly and was a longtime member of the Central Massachusetts Drag Racing Club, or as many know it by its initials, CMDR. Tony and his dad had attended drag racing events for years when he was growing up and that lifestyle became one of his passions along the way.

Tony was a classic car, truck and motorcycle enthusiast and attended many area car shows, cruise nights and drag racing events throughout the years. As a child he entered many of the community Pinewood Derby Competitions and his dad still has a wall with shelves full of the trophies he had won along the way. Tony and his dad would spend a lot of time watching the Barrett Jackson Auctions and pick apart the show vehicles waiting to be sold on display on the showcase stage. Camera shots up and down the vehicle at close to the vehicle angles would reveal every flaw in that particular vehicle and they spotted those flaws easily. Tony’s favorite network was Velocity TV and I would agree with that choice hands down. Tony loved his work on classic vehicles, but he also valued time spent with family and friends too. He especially loved the time he was able to spend with the love-of-his-life, his 11 year old daughter, Quinne “Chevelle” Masiello. Tony will be missed by many, but he will never, ever, be forgotten.

Just looking at the rear of the new Corvette Stingray says it all. Say

good bye to the round looking tail lights that have been a Corvette

mainstay since it’s inception in 1953. At first glance, you might say,

“what the hell is that” as the lights look more rectangular and have

been compared to the lights on the latest generation Camaro. Younger

people really seem to like the new lights while the older Corvette

faithful have their doubts. I wasn’t thrilled with the styling when I first

laid eyes on the new design back in April 2013 at the New York Auto

Show, but have completely changed my mind, (now that I own one!).

What’s found in the engine bay is also a nod to the future. The new

power plant, call the LT1, a designation first used for the Corvette in

1970. The new engine carries over the same size as the LS3 engine

used in last year’s standard models (base coupe and GS coupe) but

not much else. Three new technologies highlight this 6.2 liter power

plant. First, the engine employs cylinder deactivation, running on 4

cylinders when set in ECO mode. (on the 7-speed stick shift). I’ve

tested this mode out for a 20-30 mile stretch and found I can get 35-38

MPG if I cruise at 65mph in top gear....AMAZING!

To keep curb weight in check, the C7 uses multiple layers of

lightweight materials throughout the car. The three rail space frame

GM patented for the generation 5 Corvette, (1997-2004) is now

aluminum and is used on all vehicles, now, and on all upcoming

models. The hood is made of carbon fiber and the removable roof is

carbon fiber framed with magnesium. Many of these new parts are

made in-house and not by an outside source as in years past.

The big news in the shifting department is the addition of a new

7-speed manual transmission. The last three gears are all overdrive in

nature but I can tell you by personal experience it takes some getting

used to. The 4th to 5th swap is especially tricky since one has a

tendency to slide it into 7th....bummer! Auto stick fans don’t fret, a new

8-speed dual clutch automatic is in the works and should be available

on all the 2015 models.

If you’re looking to buy the new C7 soon, the hot model is one

equipped with the Z51 package. The downside to being an “early

2014 Corvette Stingray“embracing the future”

adopter” is that you’ll probably pay MSRP to own one. The Z51 model

comes standard with an electronic limited slip differential and the

benefits of this new technology are numerous even if you never plan

to track your Vette. Also available, but only with the Z51 package, is

the Magnetic ride control option. This adjustable shock setup gives

you five separate settings, ranging from a “cushy” ride to a track mode

that firms the ride up substantially. My car is so equipped and it really

makes a difference. Do some research online to learn

about the extensive technology GM developed as this is a class-

leading suspension.

I’ve owned many late-model Corvettes for the last 15 years and I can

honestly tell you that the new C7 is the best Vette yet!

The World’s #1 Sourcefor Corvettes Written by: Ed Yessaian

ChevroletMacMulkin

Late last year, the world was buzzing about the release of

the new 7th generation Corvette. With the historic Stingray

nameplate resurrected from the good old days, the next

generation of Corvette would offer better power, performance,

handling, and style than any one of its predecessors, according to

the Corvette faithful. Rumors of the car’s release floated all over

the internet and race tracks but of course we at Motorhead would

be some of the chosen few to find out first, thanks to the Corvette

Capital of the World, MacMulkin Chevrolet in Nashua, NH.

MacMulkin has long prided itself on being the second largest

Corvette dealership in the country, until recently when they took

over the top spot for this year to date. Their extensive inventory,

knowledgeable staff, and low pressure sales environment is

definitely responsible for their continued success. From the

consumer’s perspective buying Corvettes is a unique experience

and is like no other product purchase, especially in the

automotive field. The owners are highly enthusiastic, some are

collectors, and others are just living life to the fullest. MacMulkin’s

selling practices play into that very theory of enjoying life by

putting people in the Corvette of their dreams without the chances

of any buyer’s remorse down the road.

When you’re buying a Corvette, chances are that you’ve already done

your research, you know exactly what features and options you want,

and all you need is Tommy Thompson Jr. and his crew to help you do a

little bit of paperwork so you can turn the key and hit the open road.

As far as the “C7” Stingray goes, these cars are already out and about

and you should be seeing them at the car shows and cruise nights this

summer. My first chance to check one out was actually last October

at New England Dragway when a brand new Crystal Red Stingray

made its debut on the quarter mile. The car was a masterpiece and

was one of the first ones in the area, straight from the Corvette Kings

at MacMulkin. After a brutally long winter the same Crystal Red car

showed up during a test session at the track and brought along a Torch

Red Stingray sidekick. Right out of the box these cars pull 12 second

passes with ease and with a couple bolt-ons and some tuning could

easily run mid to low 11’s and then drive home with the ice cold A/C on!!

Judging from the crowds gathered around the two C7’s at New England

Dragway, it looks like there may be a few more people looking to step

up to the next generation. And when they’re ready to pull the trigger,

you can bet they’ll be heading straight to Nashua, NH to see Tommy Jr.

and the crew at MacMulkin.

1978 PACE CAR CORVETTE

The year is 1978, you pull into the gas station and the cost of a gallon of gas is

just 63 cents. This was also the year of the 25th anniversary for the Corvette, and

Chevrolet introduced the most extensively redesigned Corvette since 1968. Twenty

Five years after the birth of “America’s Sports Car”, the Corvette finally got a chance

to pace the Indy 500 in 1978. The 1978 Corvette was driven by 1960 Indy 500

winner Jim Rathmann, his fifth time at the wheel of the pace car. The race winner

for 1978 was Al Unser, driving his First National City-Chaparral Lola-Cosworth.

1978 PACE CAR CORVETTE

Page 32: Motorhead Magazine May 2014

32 | Motorhead Magazine - May 2014

As stated, 1978 was the 25th Anniversary

year for the Corvette, with the introduction

of this special edition 25th Anniversary Pace

Car model painted in black and silver-gray.

Initially, 2500 Indy 500 replica pacers-100

for each year of production were scheduled

for sale. But it was decided that each of

Chevrolet’s 6502 dealers should have one

for showroom display. Thus what was called

the Limited Edition Indy Pace Car Replica

Corvette made up some 15 percent of total

production of corvettes during that year.

Like the Silver Anniversary model, the

Pace Car Replica was actually an option

package-RPO Z78. Its main distinction was

black over silver metallic with a bright red

pinstripe in between with a spoiler added

to each end to alter appearance more

dramatically. Pace car interiors reflected Bill

Mitchell’s influence, with full silver leather

or silver leather/gray cloth upholstery and

gray carpeting. All replicas were equipped

with new thin-shell design-lumbar support

seats, new glass t-tops, alloy wheels, power

windows, air conditioning, tilt/telescope

steering wheel, power locks, rear defogger,

sport mirrors, heavy-duty battery, and AM/

FM stereo with either eight-track

tape player or CB radio. The final touch was

the Indy 500 door decal set included with

each limited-edition car indicating it was a

Pace Car.

All engines were 350 cubic inches, with the

base L-48 engine rated at 185 horsepower

(except in California, which got 175

horsepower) and the upgrade L-82 engine

rated at 220 horsepower. The engines in this

era were burdened with emissions reduction

equipment - this was the era of smog pumps

with catalytic converters, which Chevy

implemented by joining the exhaust into a

single tube, passing through the catalyst,

and then re-splitting the exhausts at the

rear of the car. This bottleneck is somewhat

responsible for the low horsepower

numbers. It was the

first Pace Car in history to use an entirely

stock drivetrain.

Transmission options included a 4-speed

manual or 3-speed automatic. This was the

first year of the “glass-back” styling with a

large class window covering the trunk area.

1978 Corvettes are worth a bit more than

their fin-back predecessors from 1975-1977.

The VIN #1Z8748S902XXX indicates this

is a Pace Car replica as they were the first

Corvette model to receive their own unique

VIN – the 8th digit is a ’9′. Production of

the 1978 Corvette Pace Car was limited to

6,502 units. Initially 300 units were planned,

however, demand was such that Chevrolet

built one for each of its dealerships.

This was the first production Corvette to

be identified as a ‘Special Edition’ as it

was designated to be the Pace Car at the

Indianapolis 500 Race. A lead story on

the front page of the Wall Street Journal

indicated this model would become an

immediate collectable Corvette. There was

a quick impact on the selling price of these

Corvettes with the asking of $10,000 over

the list price of $13,653 for the 1978 Pace

Car. It appears that this 1978 Pace Car is

the first of those Special Edition Vettes. The

original list price included all of the desirable

options and included the standard L-48

185hp motor and automatic transmission.

Some 1978 Pace Car Corvettes could be

purchased with the upgrade L-82 220hp

motor which was a $ 525.00 option. Some

Pace Cars also were equipped with an

AM-FM stereo radio with a CB feature, a $

170.00 upgrade for the Pace Car.

Demand for this Pace Car peaked shortly

after the 1978 Indy 500 Race. By this

time, numerous Pace Cars had been

sold at the premium price. Many of these

owners thought this was an excellent

investment and placed their Indy 500 Pace

Car Corvettes in storage with the original

delivered miles of under 20. In fact, many of

these Corvettes remain in storage today, and

many have never been titled.

The Corvette manufactured by Chevrolet,

was originally handbuilt in Flint, Michigan

and St. Louis, Missouri. Today it is built at a

General Motors assembly plant in Bowling

Green, Kentucky. Bowling Green, Kentucky

is also the home of the National Corvette

Museum and annual National Corvette. The

Corvette is the first all-American Sports Car

built by an American car manufacturer.

The 1978 Pace Car Corvette featured in this

Article is owned by my husband George

Arakelian, Jr., President of A Custom Car

Stereo Center in Johnston, RI . George,

the 2nd Owner purchased this Pace Car

Corvette for $ 17,000.00 from a private

owner in Rhode Island back in 1985. The

limited edition number of this Pace Car

is 2,705, with only 10,000 miles and is

equipped with the L-82 engine and 3 speed

automatic transmission, lumbar support

seats, glass t-tops, alloy wheels, power

windows, air conditioning, tilt/telescope

steering wheel, power locks, rear defogger,

sport mirrors, heavy-duty battery, and AM/

FM stereo with an eight-track tape player.

Although George stores this vehicle, this ’78

Pace Car Corvette can be seen on occasion

on the road headed to a Car Show, in the 29

years of ownership he has only been behind

the wheel to put about 200 miles on this

Car with the hopes of preserving its limited

edition status and maintaining its value.

Anyone who has any part of drag racing knows the hard-work,

dedication, and passion needed to not only compete but to also be

successful, and veteran racer Desi Dispirito knows this as well as

anyone. The long-time footbrake racer out of southern Massachusetts

has been making his way to New England Dragway for over forty

years, and with his family by his side, he has made a second home in

Epping. His hard work has paid off with not only big victories, but also

the satisfaction of being able to come back each and every week and

do what he loves most. Desi has competed in a number of classes,

at a bunch of tracks, and in some of the biggest events for over forty

years, and with a number of wins, consistently qualifying for the team

finals, and helping his wife and daughter race; he is still hungry for

more speed and success on the New England Dragstrip.

Desi does not know exactly what lured him into cars and racing, but

ever since he was in high school he’s been a gear head who could be

found at the track on the weekends. None of his siblings or parents

were mechanics or into cars, but something stuck with Desi and it

has turned into a lifelong passion. After getting his license he had a

number of cars including; a Mercury Monterey, and a Ford Galaxie,

but he was converted to Chevy’s with an Impala soon followed by his

first Nova which he purchased for a cool $50. He first started attending

drag races around 1971 when he was in high school and fell in love.

He began running his first Nova, a 1970 small block 350, four-speed in

1973, and making 15 second passes at a time, Desi was hooked. He

mainly raced on street nights, funny car shows, and non-points races,

but would make it to the track whenever he could.

You can still find Desi at the track running a purple 1972 Nova in the

Pro class entitled “X-tra Playmate II,” and with every car’s name, comes

a story. After Desi had bought that 1970 Nova in 1974, he had the

name picked out and wanted “X-tra Playmate” on the car. Lucky for

Desi he had a friend who was working at a body shop at the time and

would be able to do the job. After applying the desired name on the

trunk lid, he was driving the car back to Desi when it suffered a terrible

rear-end explosion, sending debris through the gas tank, causing the

car to crash, and ultimately catch the car on fire. The driver of the car

was lucky enough to have had this accident next to a lake as he was

miraculously taken from the car to the lake, put in the water to deter the

burns, and at the same time actually saving his life. While he suffered

extremely bad burns, he would end up surviving the nightmare. A few

years down the road, Desi went on to purchase the same 1972 Nova

he races to this day with the name “X-tra Playmate II” on the doors.

After years of attending races as a spectator and competing in non-

points races, Desi was at a Super Chevy Show in 1997 and went

to the late rounds earning a nice paycheck. He noticed that he was

beating drivers he had seen racing competitively in the points series,

and thought he was ready to make the commitment and finally join

the points series. He was ready to lock horns with the likes of Mark

Winterbottom, Ray Knight, Joe Sylva, and Jeff Nunes, who are all

drivers he had always looked up to then, and still does today. He found

quick success as he would go on to finish seventh in the footbrake

class points in 1998, and in doing so qualify for his first of many

Bracket Finals.

With all the years leading up to Desi’s first years in the points series

he was prepared and ready for success and found it with that strong

top ten finish in ‘98, but was still looking for his first points race victory.

On a Sunday points race in October of 1999, Desi found himself in the

final round with his primer Nova against Jeff Nunes, who has always

been the man to beat. Desi had seen Jeff race at the track for years,

knew about his success, and was a big influence on Desi, just as he is

for a lot of new comers to the bracket racing scene. Jeff had raced in

many final rounds up to that point, but for Desi it was his first and there

was more attached to it than just winning a race, so when Desi was

able to put the Nova in the winner’s circle, it made the win one of the

highlights of Desi’s career, that he still cherishes to this day. Perhaps

the only other win that would be able to come close was in August six

years later when Desi was competing in an Oxford Dragway money

race where it would be a runoff for the money between the Box and

No Box winner. Desi found himself in the final round representing the

No Box class, running against the final box car, a dragster that was

much quicker than his 12 second Nova. Desi was able to do his job on

the tree as well as at the finish line, earning the win light, raising the

trophy, and taking home all the money.

While Desi has raced in national events, bracket finals, big money

races, and has found success in a wide variety of settings, it is the

people that keep him coming back each and every weekend. He

never thought he would be at the point of traveling to a double points

weekend with his motorhome and enclosed trailer, but he is grateful

he can do so as he loves spending the Saturday nights with his family

and friends. With cookouts full of stories and laughs, Desi finds it

hard to beat himself up over reaction times or lifting at the finish line.

It is all about the people, and more specifically it is his family who

he gets to spend every weekend with. His wife Nancy, and daughter

Amanda, both race in the Tim’s Speed and Custom Street Eliminator

class, while his son-in-law Chris has also found his spot at the track

as one of the track photographers. Even the newest member of Desi’s

family, his grandson Eddie, is already a part of the racing family as

he just had his first birthday party at the track a few weeks ago, and

a junior dragster is already being talked about down the road. While

it can be difficult taking care of three race cars, especially when there

is breakage, Desi gets help from Ken Thayer who does all the motor

work, and Tim Worden who takes care of the transmission work, and

he is appreciative of all the help they have been over the years.

Desi is a perfect example of what keeps drag racing alive, and makes it

such a great sport. The hard-work he shows every week in taking care

of not only his own car, but making sure his wife and daughter are able

to race as well; the dedication he shows in overcoming adversity when

there is breakage to get the problem fixed so he can make the next

points day; and the passion he has shown over all the years of racing,

seeing so many other racers come and go, is what got him to where

he is now, and is also what makes him stand out among other racers.

While he loves to win as much as the next racer, it is not all about the

win lights and trophies for Desi, but more about the enjoyment of being

at the track and spending time with his family and friends; enjoying

stories, laughs and making new memories. He has seen the track

change over time and has seen many racers come and go, but through

his passion, dedication, and hard-work he has lasted all these years

and is still able to make the trip to New England Dragway each week

to enjoy going rounds in his Nova; with his family racing by his side he

looks forward to continuing to enjoy racing for years to come.

Back in the earliest days of our Muscle

Car hobby, it didn’t take much to kick off a

little bit of friendly side-by-side automotive

competition. Drag Strips were few and

far between back then and most grudge

matches took place at stop signs or traffic

lights. Today, local law enforcement, traffic

cameras, and insurance premiums have

somewhat killed a lot of people’s desire to

let loose on the streets. Motorhead has

NEVER promoted or glorified illegal street

racing, in any form, but the fact remains that

it happened back then and it still happens

today, whether we like it or not.

Even for those wishing to obey the law,

there are very few outlets for true “heads

up” racing. One such outlet, however, is

New England Dragway’s Outlaw 10.50

series. This is one of the ONLY classes that

currently offers real “heads up” action and

has an index for just about everyone. One of

the biggest draws for me personally is that

the class only allows American Production

vehicles and Muscle Cars. No imports or

tuner cars allowed. Some may say that’s

kind of narrow minded on my part but I just

really enjoy racing against similar vehicles

New England Dragway’s Outlaw 10.50offers true side by side action

and people that share an interest in the

classic American Icons.

The class runs off a .400 Pro Tree which,

for me, took a couple weekends to get

used to, but I eventually saw why the more

experienced racers prefer it. Not only is this

as close to a stoplight battle as you can get,

but it gives a slower car the chance to win

the race at the tree, which makes it far more

challenging and forces you to improve your

reaction times.

Individual indexes allow for a huge array

of cars and set-ups. From full blown race

cars in the 8.50 Wild Street category to

showroom stock Mustangs and Camaros in

12.50 True Street, pretty much anyone that

wishes to participate can fit in. The full list of

indexes includes the following…

Wild Street: 8.50 Index

Super Street: 9.50 Index

Fast Street: 10.50 Index

Real Street: 11.50 Index

True Street: 12.50 Index

Vehicle requirements for the class are

listed in the New England Dragway Racer’s

Handbook, but the highlights of the

handbook are as follows…

Vehicle Requirements: Exhaust: Mufflers required. All exhaust

gases must pass through mufflers.

Tires: Maximum 33X10.5 slick. “W” tires

okay. DOT approved tires are limited to a

maximum size of 31x18.5-15.

Fuel: Race fuel, pump gas

or alcohol permitted.

Engine: Must be an automotive

type engine.

No power adder restrictions.

No powertrain restrictions.

No cubic inch limitation.

Interior: All entries must have carpeting

and door panels. Back seat optional. Must

have passenger’s seat. Race style front

seats permitted.

Front End: OEM style front end is

mandatory. Direct bolt-in aftermarket and

replacement front end and parts provided

it is a direct replacement. Reinforcement of

existing stock front frame rails acceptable.

Must retain stock radiator support.

Rear End: Rear suspensions may be

stock, ladder bar, or racing style four-link.

Back half type cars permitted.

Body: Must be full body vehicle and

street appearing (working headlights, tail

lights, working brake lights, OEM dash and

headliner. Chrome and trim optional). No

limitation on year of manufacturer. Must

retain original appearances and profiles

for year and make of body. Stock firewall

mandatory. May be modified for transmission

and/or header clearance.

Lightweight body panels restricted to

hood, bumpers, and trunk lid/hatch. Cowl

hoods permitted.

Must have OEM safety glass mandatory.

Trucks may replace back window with Lexan

to accommodate roll bar tubing.

Additional rules, procedures, and safety

equipment requirements are available

in the Racer’s Handbook at www.

newenglanddragway.com. I urge all of you

to review the handbook and familiarize

yourself with general track procedures

just to be prepared for your first “heads

up” encounter in Outlaw 10.50. The 2014

season will offer eight races, starting with

the first two in May on May 3rd and May

24th. If any of you have any additional

questions you can also feel free to contact

me at [email protected]. Hopefully

we’ll see you guys in staging lanes!

OUTLAW RUN

Written by Jim Weicherding

“Where are you taking me?” whispers the wounded police officer.

“To the damned hospital. Where do you think I am taking you?” asks Etch.

The jet black GTO rumbles down the long stretch of open highway at a high rate of speed.

“I could give you a ticket for speeding you know,” said the officer with a soft laugh under his breath.

“Sense of humor? That’s good. I get to save your ass while you make jokes and bleed all over my interior!”states Etch.

“I can stop talking, but the bleedingis still gonna happen,” said thepolice officer.

“You wouldn’t be related to SheriffMcCabe by any chance would you?” asks Etch.

“Yes, I am... why?” replies the police officer.

“Because he is always busting my chops too, so I figured you might be related,” said Etch.

“Only through marriage. Not blood related,” said the police officer.

“Speaking of blood, you are either out of it, or you are doing a great job of keeping pressure on those bullet holes,” said Etch.

“Can we just get my dying ass to a doctor before my wife finds out I am in this condition please?” asks thepolice officer.

“Who is your wife?” asks Etch.

“I am married to McCabe’s daughter,” replies the police officer.

“You are? Are you sure you still wanna live?” asks Etch. The GTO slows down and rolls onto an off ramp at a big green interstate sign that reads: HOSPITAL EXIT.

“You are a funny guy too aren’t you?” asks the police officer.

“I have seen your wife. I know your wife. Death can’t be that bad, can it?” asks Etch.

“How do you know my wife?” asks the police officer.

“She used to beat me up for my lunch money in high school!” laughs Etch.

“You are hilarious buddy!” mumblesthe police officer. The lights from the illuminated hospital entrance sign begin to filter into the muscle car’s interior. The police officer is beginning tolose consciousness as Etch pullsthe “OUTLAW” GTO up to the ambulance entrance.

“Hey! You can’t pull that car in here,” yells a hospital staff member, “this area is for rescue personnel only!”

“Tell that to this dying cop I foundwith bullet holes in him on the sideof a dark off ramp ten minutes ago,” said Etch. Two more hospital staff run to assist Etch and the other staff member once they see the police officer being

dragged from the passenger side of the muscle car GTO. They lift the dying police officer onto a gurney and begin to take him to the ER. Etch makes his way back to the driver side door of his still running Pontiac.

“Where are you going?” yells one of the hospital staff member.

“I am so out of here!” yells Etch.

“But you need to speak with the other police officers when they arrive!” replies the hospital staff member.

“If they wanna speak with me, they are gonna have to try and catch me first!” yells Etch, as he slams his door. The power plant GTO accelerates out of the ambulance entrance area with screaming tires and loud exhaust echoing throughout the building. Etch can barely see flashing reds and blues approaching the hospital from the other direction.

“I guess I am taking a right,” said Etch. The “OUTLAW” quickly exits onto the street with dozens of eyes watchingfrom the hospital entrance next to asign that reads: HOSPITAL ZONE *QUIET PLEASE.

Wondrous innovations in car design abound

and excite consumers every day, from the

novelty of a seat warmer to the practicality

of parking sensors. These sensors detect

an imminent collision and inform the driver

either audibly, visually or both. As simple

as parking sensors seem, the particulars of

their operation remain fascinating.

UltrasonicIn an ultrasonic parking sensor, a mechanic

installs sensors on the front and rear

bumpers that emit ultrasonic radio waves.

These waves strike objects within the

detection range and bounce back, where

the sensor measures their travel time. Using

this travel time, the sensor will determine

whether an object might collide with the

vehicle and, if so, activates the warning

system. Powerful and difficult to disrupt,

ultrasonic waves naturally lend themselves

for parking sensors. However, since it uses

sound waves, an ultrasonic parking sensor

may not detect some small or oddly shaped

items that do not easily reflect sound.

ElectromagneticSome models use electromagnetic

readings to monitor the area near a

vehicle’s bumpers. Some advertised

electromagnetic parking sensors will

provide various levels of alarm tones to

alert the driver of an approximate distance

between an object and his car, offering

accuracy of up to 10 cm. Because this

method uses electromagnetism to detect

objects, it has a higher accuracy and can

detect objects ultrasonic sound waves

may miss. However, sometimes bad

weather can affect the electromagnetic

system’s performance.

Alert SystemHumans cannot hear ultrasonic or

electromagnetic waves and will need an

alert system to notify them of impending

danger. An alert box rests within the body

of the car, whether factory installed or

aftermarket. An ultrasonic parking sensor

will signal the alert box wirelessly, while the

electromagnetic sensor can be either wired

or wireless. Once the alarm sensor inside

the box receives the signal, it will notify

the driver with an alarm tone, warning

light or both.

InstallationUltrasonic parking sensors involve more

work and potential damage to a vehicle to

install. You must drill holes and leave lasting

damage in your vehicle’s bumpers to place

the sensors properly. An electromagnetic

sensor usually attaches an antenna with

an adhesive, resulting in no damage to the

vehicle’s frame, and it disappears from view

when installed properly. Some models offer

the capability to switch the sensors on and

off at will, which can prove useful in slow-

moving traffic.

These sensors detect an imminent collision and inform the driver either

audibly, visually or both

CAR MOVIES

What is it about watching a cool badass

muscle car, or hot rod, on the big screen

that makes us so excited?

Well, for me personally, it’s the chase. “I love

The Chase!”

When the good guy and the bad guy jump

into their respective cars and trucks, and

even hop on motorcycles for that matter, my

blood begins pumping real fast. They fire up

their power plant vehicles and take off at a

high rate of speed and my skin begins to

sweat and my heart pumps faster. It’s called

(Adrenaline). Our body reacts to the action

happening on the screen in front of us and it

kicks into high gear.

Is it that simple though? Is it simply a

mechanism in our bodies that influences

our actions, or reactions to what our eyes

are watching?

There are those that could care less about

fast cars, big trucks and quick motorcycles.

I don’t personally know anyone that thinks

like that, but they must be out there, right?

If they are out there, they are definitely

out there, and don’t hang around with this

author, writer and artist. I KNOW, that they

are not reading this article either. You have

to be a car guy in order to be interested

in this subject matter to begin with. I keep

company with people who like and love

pretty much the same things that I like and

love... and that includes Car Movies!

I like it all in those types of movies. The

shiny paint jobs, the flat color paint jobs.

The loud exhaust and screeching tires. The

chase. I love the chase! Watching to see

who is going to out drive who. Which one

of the vehicles is the fastest. Who survives

and who crashes and burns. All legitimate

reasons to watch and love car guy movies.

We all have our reasons, but I am a writer

for car magazines so you can read what

my reasons are while I guess what your

reasons are for liking, or loving, these types

of movies in the first place.

Is it simply a mechanism in

our bodies that influences

our actions, or reactions to

what our eyes are watching?

The truth of the matter is, that we are all car,

truck and motorcycle guys at heart. That’s

why you are reading this article.

If I were to select my favorite car movies in

the top ten column they would probably fall

in this order, but not absolutely in this order.

I might change my mind tomorrow and then

one of the car movie line ups would change

the order.

VANISHING POINT

I will never get tired of watching car movies

and the movies with cool cars featured in

them. You may have noticed that I did not

include the movie franchise for the Fast And

The Furious movies in my top ten favorite

car movies. It’s not that I didn’t like those

movies, it’s just that I really like the older car

movies with more of a nostalgia theme to

their films. Not taking away anything from

the Fast franchise, its just

my perspective and

view on car movies

for car guys. There

are plenty of car

movies I love to

watch but they

all can’t be in the

top ten listings. I am sure that you feel the

same way about your favorites.

I guess we will never really know, or

understand, the why’s, who’s and what’s

about the reasons why we love car movies,

we just know that we do love them. Call

it adrenaline, I call it something else. I do

know that my excitement is evident and I

feel like I am on cloud nine watching car

chases on movies and I hope that the

passion for them never fades away. I don’t

expect that to happen anytime soon.

In fact, the images that you see along

with this article are Car Movie Art Prints

that I have recently created for Car Shows

and Cruise Nights across the region this

cruisin’ season. They are illustrated in

black and white, pen and ink style images

on an 11 x 17 size area that will be printed

on quality card stock ready to display

almost anywhere in your home, garage,

business or shop. The three images

shown are from the car movies, American

Graffiti, Bullitt and Two-Lane Blacktop,

but there are more on the drawing table

that will be featured at a later time in the

near future.

So the next time you sit down to watch your

favorite car movie, remember to “Buckle

Up!”, hold on tight to your popcorn and drink,

because I am sure much like me, you will

be on the edge of your seat sweating, pulse

racing and your heart beating faster while

the car chase takes place and ends with

an exciting finish featuring an explosion, a

violent crash or a quick escape. Either way,

it’s exciting and WE LOVE IT!

The S.S.A.A.C. Trading Bee Inc. presented its 55th Annual Swap Meet recently in Mansfield, Massachusetts.

New England’s oldest and largest swap meet was held on Saturday

and Sunday, May, 10th and 11th, 2014 at the Xfinity Center For

The Performing Arts located on Route 140 at I-495 in Mansfield,

Massachusetts.

Gates for Vendors were opened at 4pm on Friday, May 9th and open

for set up until 10pm in order to prepare for the very busy two day

weekend event. Reserved spaces were only $60 and after April 12th,

2014 the rate fees per booth was still a reasonable $70 for a two day

swap meet venue.

Gates opened for the public on Saturday at 6am and closed at 8pm

with the gates opening Sunday at 6am and closing on the final day at

4pm. The weather was cool but overall it wasn’t a bad weekend for a

great swap meet event and turn out of enthusiastic participants looking

for that one-of-a-kind find and deal.

Public admission was only $10 per person, per day, and well worth the

expense to enter the swap meet grounds to search for those unique

and hard-to-find items.

MOTORHEAD MAGAZINE Publisher, Lou Cicerone, attended the

55th Annual Mansfield Swap Meet with his friend, Bobby Russo, and

they traveled there and back home again in Bobby’s beautiful 1964

Chevy Corvette. Not only was the swap meet an enjoyable and exciting

weekend event for the both of these enthusiasts, but the cruise back

and forth in that classic Corvette was epic I am sure.

The truth of the matter is that the weekend swap meet was fun, and if

you can cruise back and forth in your own classic car, muscle car, hot

rod or cool truck, it adds a lot to the experience.

This writer loves the whole experience of attending swap meets and

car shows, along with drag racing and racing events, and other

automotive venues due in a large part because of all of the great

people that you meet at these gatherings of car and truck enthusiasts

from all walks of life.

I would strongly recommend climbing into your favorite ride for the

56th Annual Mansfield Swap Meet next year and come on down and

experience the fun, activities and other showcase features of the

oldest swap meet held in New England and bring the family along

with a pocket full of cash. As pictured along with this article, there are

definitely some fascinating and out-of-this-world finds and deals for

collectors and automotive enthusiasts alike. It is a fun weekend for the

entire family.

Appreciation

Team Motorhead Magazine would like to

show its appreciation and extend a “Thank

You” to the Oaklawn Mobil Gas Station

and Auto Service located at 975 Oaklawn

Avenue, Cranston, Rhode Island for allowing

us to take photos of the cool Corvettes

and Motorhead Magazine Crew along with

our Friends for our current Cover Photo of

this month’s issue now available at retail

locations, car shows and cruise nights

across the area.

A special “Thanks” to Frank Gervasio, owner

of the Oaklawn Mobil Gas Station and Auto

Service, for welcoming us all to use his

business establishment for our May Cover

Photo, Corvettes Under The Lights. Frank’s

business was a great location to take these

cover photos.

Oaklawn Mobil Gas Station and Auto

Service has been a long time fixture in the

city of Cranston, Rhode Island. Years ago, it

was the last stop for area drag racers who

would fill up their cars and check under their

hoods before heading to the area drag ways

to compete against each other for bragging

rights and talk about who’s car was the

fastest that week. It was a great location to

get together as a group and to leave for the

tracks together instead of just rolling up on

each other once they reached the drag way.

Oaklawn Mobil Gas and Auto Service also

has a long track record of providing great

automotive service and repairs within

the community and Team Motorhead

Magazine would recommend their techs and

mechanics for all of your automotive service

and repair needs. Whether it is a minor

repair, or major repair, this is the place to

bring your vehicle.

Oaklawn Auto Service offers Complete Auto

Repairs, RI State Inspection, Goodyear

Tires, Road Service, Computer Diagnostics

and just in time for the heat, your vehicle Air

Conditioning Service to keep you cool inside

your car, or truck on those hot summer days.

Their Hours of Operation

are as follows:

Gas Daily 6am - 11pm

Service & Repairs

Monday - Saturday 7am - 11pm

Closed Sundays

You can contact their automotive repair and

road service crew by calling 401-942-9748.

Again, thanks to Frank Gervasio, owner

of Oaklawn Mobil Gas Station and Auto

Service, for his generous usage of his

business establishment for our May

Motorhead Magazine Cover Photo.

SWAP MEETCAR SHOW

FORD V8 CLUBThe cold and rainy weather didn’t dampen

the spirits of the showcase vehicle owners,

display booth vendors or spectators at the

recent Ford V8 Club Swap Meet and Car

Show held in Fitchburg, Massachusetts at

the Fitchburg Airport.

The Ford V8 Club held their 44th Annual

Swap Meet and Car Show on Sunday,

April 27th, 2014 from 8am until 1pm

at the Fitchburg Airport located in

Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

There were plenty of showcase vehicles

on display that included a line up of

Antiques, Classics, Rods, Customs and

Trucks for all to see and enjoy. A wonderful

trip down Memory Lane I am sure for many

in attendance.

Also showcased, were plenty of vendor

tables and booths that had everything from

Vintage Toys and Automobilia for anyone

searching for that just right item to display

in their homes, garages and businesses, to

Petroliana and Nostalgia Collectibles

for great prices and in great condition. It

was an automobile parts and collectibles

finders paradise.

There was a small five dollars entrance fee

and kids under the age of twelve years old

were admitted for free. A very reasonable

fee considering everything on display and

available at this annual event for spectators

and buyers.

Free parking was an added perk and

the first five hundred show cars in

attendance received a very nice Ford V8

Club Swap Meet & Car Show Dash Plaque

for their vehicles.

One of the event’s showcase features was

also on display for the event. Ken Makuch’s

record setting flathead Bonneville salt flat

race car was also a highlight for everyone

that day. This automotive land speed record

setter received a lot of attention and was

admired by many of the spectators as well

as other showcase vehicle owners and

vendors. Again, the weather did not take

anything away from this great venue put on

by the Ford V8 Club in Massachusetts.

The V8 Ford Club looks forward to seeing

everyone again next year for their 45th

Annual Swap Meet and Car Show and

wants to remind you to watch for fliers and

notifications for a date and time for that

event in 2015.

This is one individual that will definitely be

in attendance with a show car and items for

sale like everyone else.

It was an automobile parts andcollectibles finders paradise
