Presidents Letter May 2013
March and April have been very successful and busy months, with many excellent functions in the Club and May will continue the trend with the added bonus of good weather. Make
sure you get your tickets early for the Summer Extravaganza on June 15th at the Bella Vista
Club as this celebrates 21 years of the existence of Club Siberme. This was the name that was
chosen for the club although, as you know, we will celebrate 25 years of the ICE club this
November.
Joanna and I will be away visiting family in America from the 1st – 28th May but I leave you
in the capable hands of your Vice President, Jo-Anna. Please be as helpful and understanding
with Jo-Anna as you usually are with me!
Looking forward to July, The Texas Pearls Country and Western Group will be returning to
the club to give you all the chance to dress up in denim & check shirts again.
Finally, at the recent Foreign Residents Day at the Palaccio, one of our founder members, Ray Oldfield, was awarded the title Foreigner of the Year and was given a plaque in recogni-
tion of 20 years service to Estepona. Congratulations Ray – you are an example to us all.

BOOK LIBRARY: CAN MEMBERS PLEASE NOT SUBMIT HARDBACK BOOKS
TO THE LIBRARY, PAPERBACKS WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED. Returned books
should be placed at the foot of the first half of the alphabet as designated - the librarian
will then sort.
DVD/VIDEO Library: Can members please ensure they sign for all borrowed films and
add membership number, Please return films as soon as possible and sign as returned.
Jigsaw Puzzles: There is a selection of jigsaw puzzles available stored under the video li-
brary. They are mostly 500 pieces, some 1,000.
Glasses, cups etc: Please return to the bar before leaving the club. Please place used
unbroken bottles carefully in bin provided, that is positioned under dartboard. Return
plates & cutlery to the kitchen.
Terrace Doors: Those people who open terrace doors are responsible for closing before
leaving club.

More Tips for iPad users
Blocking Senders in email for the iPad Unfortunately there is no facility on the iPad for blocking email senders. Therefore the solution is to block the email on the web server and then email from this sender will not be downloaded into the iPad email. The various webmail operators will have different ways of doing this but use the search facility
and enter Block Senders and you will find out how to do it.
More on Keyboards
In our last list of tips we mentioned the availability of a Spanish Keyboard. Another Keyboard which users may find amusing, if not useful, is Emoji. From the settings screen, select General -> Interna-
tional Keyboards.
Full Stop / End of Sentence
Simply double tap the space bar when you are done with your sentence and your iPad will automati-cally add a full-stop and begin a new sentence. Also note that by default the first letter of any sentence
is automatically capitalised.
Adding Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail Email Accounts:
By default there are built in settings for Gmail and Yahoo to add your webmail account to your iPad. From the settings screen, select Mail, Contacts, Calendar then Add Account, select the account pro-
vider, and fill in your name and password.
For some reason, Hotmail isn’t listed by default, but it’s just as easy to add. Choose Other as your account type, then simply select Add Mail Account. You’ll need to fill in the same details, but there are no complicated settings or server addresses. If your password and username were correct, just
click save on the next screen and you’re done!
Managing your Home Screen
Use your iPad regularly for a few months and you’ll no doubt end up with a disorganised mess of appli-
cations. Let’s do some sorting.
Touch and hold on any icon on the home screen for about 3 seconds and the icons will all start wob-
bling. In this mode, each icon has an X in the corner.
Touch the X and you will quickly and easily delete icons from your home screens. Apps deleted like this will still be stored in your iTunes library, so to delete the app entirely do so in iTunes and sync your
device.
You can also drag the icons around to re-arrange them in this mode – dragging to the edge of the
screen will push the icon onto the next home screen.

across the top of the screen which can be dragged to highlight particular years.

grandchildren.
"Ever since the end of last year, I've been in touch with a woman I met through an online dating website. Apparently she lives in Australia but is currently on a trip in
London.
She emailed me yesterday to say that while over here she's been mugged and now no longer has her debit or credit cards or any cash. Therefore she's asked for me to
transfer money to her for a flight back home. Instead, I'm alerting ScamWatch as I
believe this is a con."

PAST EVENTS
3 Day, 2 Night Trip to Granada
Wednesday, The Trip to the Gypsy Caves: We were picked up from our hotel by 2 mini-
buses and taken to Albaicin and Sacramento area. There we were taken on a walking tour by
our guide Antonio around the area to see the church and mosques. We saw some beautifully
decorated houses, an annual prize for the best one, we saw the second placed which was fabulously decorated with numerous planters. The water container is called the aljibe. Very
unusual to see the Alhambra flood lit by night.
Antonio brought us then to the caves to see the flamenco, the dancing being the best I have
seen. Two groups comprising of six ladies and one man. It was a most enjoyable evening and
one of the highlights of the trip to Granada.

Thursday, The Trip to the Siera Nevada: We woke up to a clear blue sky and, after a
hearty breakfast, checked out of our hotel and boarded the coach for the drive to the Sierra
Nevada. Our driver steered us safely out of Granada before taking us skillfully up the narrow
winding road to the mountains. As we climbed higher and higher, the views were breathtak-
ing although looking at the drop from the side of the coach was not for the faint-hearted!
When we reached our destination, the ski resort of Pradollano, we were some 2,100mts above sea level and completely surrounded by snow capped mountains. The snow was so
smooth and shiny it looked like a Christmas cake that had just been iced. First stop was at
one of the many cafes for a very welcome hot drink before boarding the lift to take us up to
the ski station at Borreguiles.
As we ascended, hanging in mid-air, it was fascinating to see the skiers just below us making
their way down to the end of the run. We had to be quick and nimble to get off the lift, as the
cars move continuously. However, once on solid ground again, we found our way out to an
enormous terrace with wonderful views to the top of Mount Veleta.
Some of the ski runs start nearly at the top, which is 3,398 mts above sea level, and the hun-
dreds of skiers looked like little black ants against the vast white background. >>12
Saturday 16th March - St Patrick’s Celebration
It just gets better and better, louder, and more fun. Our table of 10, arrived after 8.00 pm, to
see and listen to Martin Holmes and Cindy playing guitar and keyboard. The Clubhouse
looking very smart and elegant in green and black.
The Irish music and songs put everyone in a happy, relaxed mood. Another Martin (Monahan) got up and played his guitar and sang along with it. Everyone joined in and Rose-
mary McKenna sang a beautiful Irish song solo. Terry Byrne joined in word perfect with
more songs also accompanied by Martin. Terry also sang some funny and naughty ditties.
More singers took the floor singing more favourites.
Then husband Terry brought the house down (yes of course I’m biased) singing Elvis and
Kris Kristofferson, “I believe” and paired up with Freddy to sing. Rosemary Ferguson sang
in her beautiful voice, Anne Hardwick recited a poem, and many others gave great entertain-
ment.
Nobody wanted to go home it really was a great evening. Many thanks to Joan Thompson
who really knows how to organise a Party. Many thanks too to Alan and his team on the bar

Tuesday 26th March - Ladies and Gents Lunches Out
New venues this month for both groups, the Juliet’s visiting Kinsale Bar/Bistro and the Ro-
meo’s going to the Taj Mahal, both being in Duquesa Port. ( Not Estepona Port as thought by
George!!!)
Juliet’s say the meal portions at Kinsales were very large, some doggy bags (or people bags as Bea prefers) were taken home for later. The salmon en Croute got the thumbs up. A few
little niggles, vegetables not being fully cooked, and having to sit in smoking area (fully en-
closed toldo). Thanks Bea for the organising.
Saturday 27th March - Country and Western Night with Live Music
Members and guests enjoyed a great night with Hensler and the Texas Pearls, a Legends of
Nashville Tribute Group. Tim Hensler was on guitar and Lydia and Vanessa were his glamor-
ous vocalists. They are a UK based group with much experience of all music types but their
country music on this occasion was just the thing to encourage almost everyone to take to the floor for a boogie including line dancing for those who were either knowledgeable or brave!
They are over in Spain in a few month´s time so we are looking forward to have them at the
Club once again on Saturday 27th July, don’t miss it.

Saturday 23rd March - Trip to Fuengirola Theatre - Annie Musical
On a very wet day 40 of us traipsed off to the theatre in Fuengirola to watch Annie. Arriving
at 6 p.m. we had plenty of time to eat before the show started, as it was raining most of us
just headed straight for our favourite restaurant. After full tummies and thirst quenched we
arrived at the theatre for our ticket allocations, most of us were in the 4th or 5th row from the front.
The show was as good as usual, how "Annie" remembered all her lines and songs remains a
mystery, but little Molly stole the show with her facial expressions and tripping up, I think
we all fell in love with her. Big thank you to Bea for organising trip. Submitted by Sue Potter
<<12 Closer to hand we could see a lot of people snowboarding as well as skiing and our
cameras were working overtime capturing the action.
We eventually took the lift back down to the village where we had a welcome lunch, sitting
outside in the sunshine, before settling down in one of the deck chairs and relaxing before
returning to the coach. We finally set off for home at 4pm. Joan's organization had worked faultlessly making this a

Tuesday 9th April - Gardening Group Trip Out
The GARDENING GROUP held their monthly meeting at the Agrojardin Garden Cen-
tre. The weather was perfect so we were able to hold the meeting outside in the Agrojardin’s
refreshment area. Whilst enjoying coffees and snacks, a lengthy discussion ensued involving
various, problems, advice, with some good tips offered. After the meeting we took our time having a nice long leisurely stroll around the garden centre with most of us returning to our
cars carrying various shrubs, plants, herbs etc. >>13

The feedback seemed to be that everyone enjoyed our Gardening Group get together and
were looking forward to the next.
The next Gardening Group meeting will be held on Tuesday 14th May at 11.00am in the
coffee bar at “Martins” in San Enrique de Guardiaro (about 40 minutes drive from ICE –
leave Sabinillas on the A7 (N340) head in the direction of Algeciras. After about 7 round-abouts turn right into San Enrique. About half a mile down see “Martin” Garden centre on
your left). There is an option to move onto another Garden Centre nearby called
“Contreras” (closes at 2pm). The Manolin restaurant is next door for tapas or an 8 euro menu
del dia. This extra visit can, of course, be decided by members themselves on the day. All the
details of this May meeting will be placed on the ICE Notice Board and if any ICE members

The Autumn Cup will be held, for the first time, at the spectacular Valle Ramano (Estepona) Golf Club and Resort. I have negotiated, what I believe to be, a fantastic price of 50€ each including a shared buggy, use of all the facilities including the practice range and putting area, for those that can get up early enough. If you don’t know the Club take a look sometime. As it is a long course I have arranged to play off of forward tee positions which will make for an even more enjoyable experience. IT’S THE FLY SEASON AGAIN. As the temperature warms up with the approaching spring, those annoying houseflies starts to appear again. No one is quite sure where they go during the winter. The most likely place is in stables, cow sheds and the like. Some even believe they migrate. Like cockroaches, flies can survive even in the coldest parts of the world. Around July/August the flies will mate and within a week the female will lay around 120 eggs in what-ever rich organic matter she can find. Horse manure is ideal but dog doo will do just as well. It takes around 12 days for the eggs to go through a complex metamorphous passage to larvae, then maggots then pupae, finally emerging as a full grown adult. Two weeks later, into their typical one-month lifespan, they'll be grandparents several times over. Were they all to survive the summer, the planet would be covered to a depth of 23 to 47 feet. Fortunately the fly's natural enemies - birds, reptiles and certain other insects, not to mention those electronic fly traps that show up at the butchers every spring - eat their fair share, and unless there's sufficient food, warmth and moisture throughout the eggs' development, those maggots don't have a chance. Because they're tropical animals, temperatures also greatly affect an adult's life - and with it, if not their ability to reproduce, at least the likelihood of getting around to mate. At 10 degrees Centigrade they're airborne; at 9 degrees, they’re reduced to a crawl; at 7 degrees, they're virtually comatose; and at a few degrees below freezing, it's death within hours. If it climbs much past 40 degrees, heat paralysis sets in; at 50 degrees, death comes almost as swiftly as with a swatter. It's the low 30s in which these little blighters thrive. And they've been thriving for a while now at least 20 or 25 million years. Even so, most researchers agree, this common pest does pose a potential health problem, and not only because he's likely to land on dog poo one minute, then dance on your paella the next. While their feet are filthy, their manner of dining is even more dangerously disgusting - a fact they almost seem conscious of. Why else then would they so thoroughly wipe their hands and face after eating? While exploring solid or semi-solid surfaces - like sweets, corn flakes or your mashed potatoes - the first thing they'll do is cough up some of their last meal. This mixes with and helps dissolve the new find, most of which then gets sucked through the proboscis. Most, though, is the best they can do. A fly always leaves a little something wherever he's been. Despite our most determined efforts, houseflies continue to resist any meaningful long-term control. We came close right after World War II though, when DDT and other potent chlorinated hydrocarbons were used extensively in homes, restaurants and dairy barns. Only later did we realize some flies developed immunity, passing the trick on to their kids, while we poisoned ourselves in the process. According to the experts, no spray is absolutely safe, If it can kill an insect, it can damage us. By far, the safest and best approach to summer fly control is preventative - cleaning up after the dog and keeping a tight lid on the rubbish bin - to at least cut down on the filth in which they feed and breed. Some of us wouldn't want the housefly wiped out anyway. There's still enough hunter lurking in our reptilian brains to appreciate an occasional kill. Especially midair on the very first swat. Be aware, how-ever, that the fly’s antenna sense variations in air movements, hence their uncanny knack of escaping even if you approach them from behind! As any 10-year-old can tell you, the housefly isn't terribly swift, despite the fact that those wings beat at around 200 to 330 times a second. With an average speed of 4.5 miles an hour, he can, however, just keep up with a walking horse. And because wing muscles account for 11 percent of his body weight, he can trail a horse for hours. Vegetables: We live in one of the worlds best countries for fresh vegetables and fresh fruit, I
have always said there are three things in life which I think will allow you to live to a ripe old
age. Olive oil, garlic and red wine, plus sunshine and fresh vegetables. You should then have
the perfect life.
This month I would like to tell you how to keep your vegetable perfect in colour when you serve a meal for guests, a lot of people become nervous when preparing a meal for 6 or more.
The main course you can have ready but when it comes to the vegetables it is always a panic
to have them ready at the same time. First choose your vegetables for colour when they are
placed on the table. Runner beans, carrots, red cabbage and cauliflower. Remember if you
have a main course with a strong sauce keep the vegetables plain.
Runner Beans: To have these piping hot and a vivid green, top and tail the runner beans, cut
into two or three pieces, cut each piece into three length wise. Wash and place into a pan of
boiling salted water and bring to the boil, cook until just tender then refresh in cold running
water. Drain and-place in your serving dish, cover with clingy and reheat in the microwave
just before serving, you will find the colour perfect.
Carrots: These are always a good contrasting colour, peel and slice in a diagonal shape cook
in salted water and slice of lemon. Add a table spoon of sugar, this brings out the flavour in the carrots, then can be left in hot water ready for service.

Coach trips: See trip information for times. Please ensure that you sit in the seat numbered on your
ticket. We regret that we cannot stop at any other point unless agreed with organiser, to pick up or put
down. The organiser reserves the right to refuse to include any member they feel is not sufficiently
able-bodied to follow the itinerary. Members are responsible for their own travel insurance.
Buying your ticket: Please produce your membership card together with the correct money. Have
prepared your choice of menu if applicable
Final ticket booking: All tickets must be booked and paid for on or before the last Thursday coffee
morning before the event. Late phone bookings cannot be accepted. Members are advised to attend
the last Thursday before a trip in case there are any last minute alterations.
Refunds: Cannot be given for either deposits or tickets, unless the organiser is notified in time,
always providing the trip is full and a replacement can be found from the waiting list.
Tips: Included in the cost of coach travel and restaurants, but not for hotels.
Smoking: The smoking of tobacco and any other substance should not be permitted anywhere in or

Dogs: Dogs are not allowed inside the clubhouse. They are permitted on the lower terrace but only

A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered.
Upon their arrival, the doctor said that the hospital was testing an amazing new high-tech
machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labour pain to the baby's father. He
asked if they were interested. Both said they were very much in favour of it.
The doctor set the pain transfer to 10% for starters, explaining that even 10% was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. But as the labour progressed, the hus-
band felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and kick it up a notch.
The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20% pain transfer. The husband was still feeling
fine. The doctor then checked the husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he
was doing.
At this point they decided to try for 50%. The husband continued to feel quite well. Since the
pain transfer was obviously helping the wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doc-
tor to transfer ALL the pain to him.

A Polish man moved to the USA and married an American girl. Although his English was
