Muubaa S/S 2013 plays a bold but delicate game at the forefront of the season’s key trends. Never afraid to bend the rules and break the boundaries often associated with leather, the collection is a celebration of the possibilities of this most versatile material.

The season is defined by flowing curves, delicate details and a bold palette with metallic highlights.

editor ’s letters

When Jasmine contacted me about making an on-line fashion magazine with her I didn’t even think

twice! It’s been my absolute dream since I was 7 years old and I was/am still positive that I will work

in the fashion industry when I grow up. When people ask me what I want to do when I grow up,

the answer is always the same...business in fashion. Whether it’s fashion buying, model management,

working in magazines, marketing, fashion journal-ism or PR; I want to do it all. I love being able to say that I have already been able to start reaching my dreams through this magazine and my blog

(and I am not even an adult yet!).

The past few months I have poured my heart and soul into this magazine. My role as the ‘co-found-

er and fashion features editor’ means that I do everything from writing articles, organising fea-

ture stories, organising the main photo shoot and contacting contributing writers; the list is endless!

My days at school are filled with me sending emails back and forth to graphic designers and photogra-

phers; whilst Jasmine sleeps (she lives half way across the world from me!) and before bed Jasmine

and I will discuss even more idea’s we have; our dreams for the magazine (which include meeting

our hero, Alexander Wang!), before she works hard during her day while I am sleeping, which basically means we are working on this magazine 24 hours a

day!

I hope you enjoy this issue of Dalliance; as much as I have loved making it for you!

I honestly can not believe that one of my dreams have come true! I’ve been wanting to create my own mag-azine for quite some time now, but I was worried that

no one would take me seriously or that I wouldn’t find someone as young as me who has the same level of passion This is why when I first contacted Laura

and saw her excitement towards my email I was over-whelmed. Now it feels like I’ve known Laura all my life

(and not just from January!) She is a friend...a close friend, someone who I can trust and someone who I hope to make memories with - with DALLIANCE

being our first memory! So thank you Laura for being as crazy as I am and being there when Fashion Week

2013 was on - I honestly have never communicated so quick when Alexander Wang’s show started and when

he debuted his first collection at Balenciaga! Also, I would like to thank everyone else who is apart of

‘TEAM DALLIANCE’ and who has supported Laura and I throughout this process. I truly do appreciate it!

This issue is about ‘The Next Generation’ - in cele-bration of DALLIANCE, which is run and written by youths. With this we hope to entertain and inspire; inspire you to go out for your own dreams and to

prove that the only limits there are the ones you create yourself! Seriously, just reach for the stars! The world is your oyster and don’t trap yourself in the mindset

that you are not good enough!

And lastly, I would like to thank Brydie Mack (WOLF-CUB Chronicles) for being our photographer, stylist and last minute make-up artist for our cover feature

shoot! They are incredible and you have major talent. Plus, thank you to Livi Moulder (Chic Model Manage-ment) for gracing our covers and representing the next generation - can you believe she is only 15!! Beautiful

job!

I hope you enjoy our debut issue, as well as watching us grow as people and as a magazine!

THANK YOU!

I admit, sometimes fashion is hard to keep up with. 2 seasons a year, each fashion capital with its own week plus pre-fall, resort and couture collections-It gets quite exhausting! The trends and

fashion have a lot to do with timing. Collections and production adhere to certain deadlines and every single detail has to be in place for the final show. In the fashion world nobody or noth-

ing legendary is ever forgotten and designers are forever moving to different fashion houses and changing up their aesthetic (Raf Simons moving from Jil Sander to Dior was a huge change for

the fashion industry and Hedi Slimane taking the empire of yves Saint Laurent and changing it to grunge and Saint Laurent Paris). The constantly changing industry could make your head spin,

with a never ending cycle of new trends, designers, and fashion shows. In case you missed out on Spring 2013 last year, check out these collections and what to wear this spring and summer!

What trends are you seeing for the 16-30 year old youngsters? If we were doing this in the year 2000, where the economy was better and the administration was better it would be easier to do. Because of the state of economy people are trying to work with the budgets they have, it’s not easy to do. But the one

thing I have noticed today, especially in everyday living, whether that be on the subway or street, the laymen or the ordinary student, it is more about what they can wear and throw in the washer, iron and make it work. The state of the economy with regards to disposable income is not readily available to do as much dry cleaning, but if you want to look good and keep things looking fresh then that is what is required, but today that may not be on top of many peoples priority list. In current climate people do what is necessary to get by, which as we can also includes not dry cleaning everything, or as much as before, yet still maintaining a wardrobe that requires less dry cleaning instead. Again that is all because of today’s economy and cost of living. for ex-ample, I used to dry clean all my black jeans all the time as black jeans will fade after a couple of washing, but with dry cleaning costing as much as $6.50 (approximately £5.00) each time and with dry cleaned products lasting up to 2 years, imagine how many pairs of jeans you could get with that price!

So, I’ve heard fashion stylists tell celebrities that they do not have to wash their jeans all the time; Anderson Cooper got ridiculed for the fact that he had the habit of not washing his jeans. What advice do you have for people on this? What is the right thing to do?I hate to say this… but I am going to say it, it’s a personal reference. If you want to go out and look like a slob, then fine, do whatever you want. Not only don’t wash you jeans, but when you take your clothes of place them in pile on a chair and let them pile up for a couple of weeks and let them wrinkle…See how good you look after that. Although, there are some fashion designers who make antibacterial material for people on the go and it actually works! francois and Marithé Girbaud was the first who did this in fashion.

Did you see the protesters in Milan who just stormed the runway of Roberto Cavalli’s show due to the process used to manufacture in his show?It depends on how conscious you are about the world. Do you just care about yourself or do you care about who and what is happening to the person who is making the fabric? There are processes that people are complaining about that are killing the people who are making the materials. But does the person who is wearing the product really care about that in the end or are they even aware of it? I think it is more about your look and how you look. Also there is something a designer, Geoffrey Beene, told me a long time ago that I will never forget. He said, “first impressions are most important.” When you go some-where, no matter where it is, a business appointment, a job interview, or going to a club -- what you are wearing is the first impression they will get of you. How does your hair and make-up look? They are the first things that hit their eyes. We live in a very visual world so the way denim is process should really not matter.

Where do you think the youths of today are getting their information from, as it pertains to fashion and what recommendations do you have for them on where they should go for information? This is an interesting question because there are two sides to this coin. Some of them are getting it from the streets. Some are getting it from magazines. A lot of it from input on TV, at shows, events (i.e. the Oscars, the Golden Globes) so they can get a sense of what is going on. A lot of what I see is from the own individual person. They decide on their own what looks good. If you have a good sense of style that will work! If you understand composition, that also works. If you understand what it takes to make you look good, then that is what it is all about. If you do not have a clue and you are just walking out there with your ego -- which I hate to say, but an ego of “I know what it’s all about”, which is not the case … you are not going to have any idea of what quality is all about. for example, there was a time where I thought I knew enough about clothes and the different styles of clothes. But the knowledge to know what a really good flannel shirt was, or what is good cotton, or a great fabric, or what a ratty acrylic is makes a big difference. There was one time where I was given acoat and I really didn’t want another coat. I didn’t really have room for it, but when I saw the gift and its quality I immediately put my hand under the lapel of the coat -- I did not know at the time what I was feeling was Arma-ni, and to the touch of the hand it felt like it was a bathrobe! you must learn about material. If you care about the way you look, go to the stores, taking your input from the streets, reality shows and the magazines, and put your hands on the materials. Do that a couple of times and you will be more experienced. you will see how that material plays in the design process. Some materials react better in design than others.

Let’s talk colours!Colours are another big deal,

depending on the season and the person. Ten years ago there was a

person in the fashion industry who made the statement, “Anything

goes.” This is still true today. But if you watch society around you and

your circle of friends you will see that “Not anything goes.” People

tend to go in a flow. If everyone is wearing fall and winter, people will

wear tans and muted tones and if you are wearing a hot pink you are

going to stand out like a sore thumb.

If it’s about seasons like spring and summer, you will do brighter colours or something that stands

out because there are more colours on the street and around you. When you are in winter or in cold weather

countries, you will want to be in black, tans, greys; low key colours to

match your surroundings, but if it makes you happy it’s good.

Page 12: DALLIANCE Magazine: May 2013

What do you think is next, the next step in fashion for teenagers? The younger generations are based on what goes on in school. By the time they are 25, 30, 35 you’re out of school and into what is going on in society, what you will do at work, what you are going to do at night. Again, look at what the designers are producing. Michael kors, this past season did a nice job of creating a collection that has a nice range of garments for everyone. Cutting edge garments and conserv-ative garments. Everything looked clean. It really is about how much you care about what you look like. Go out and pick up magazines. See what the designers are creating. If you cannot afford that designer at least you have an idea of the look. When you are in a store you will have a better sense of what you like and what is happening in fashion.

In closing, be yourself, but always have a sense of style. People try to understand what fashion is. There are great people in this industry that would agree on this. What is fashion? “When you mix clothes with style: you get fashion!” It’s a mathematical formula. Mix style with your clothes. Now you are considered fashionable.

DEMAND.What is the best thing about modeling?

Definitely, the travel! Even though it of-ten means spending hours in transit, I get to discover so many interesting places.

What is a misconception people have about modeling?

I think the way the modeling indus-try is portrayed in the media can make people believe it’s quite shallow and superficial. It takes a lot of hard work and perseverance to succeed in this business and definitely doesn’t solely depend on your look. Some of the top girls, Karlie Kloss and Gisele are not nec-essarily the most beautiful girls in the industry, but have succeeded because they treat modeling as a business, build-

Q a&

ing their skills and personality to create an image and go on to do other things.

Most exciting job you have worked on?I loved working with Zimmerman on their latest swimwear campaign. We shot it in the Blue Mountains, and it was ab-solutely beautiful, a very surreal setting. Favourite designers?Balmain, Chloe, Balenciaga, Alexander Wang, Dolce, Isabel Marant, Rag and Bone, just to name a few.

Dream designer to work for?I would love to walk for Chanel. Karl La-gerfeld has such an amazing eye for cre-ating the most innovate and classic col-lections.

HAIR & BEAUTY TRENDS

Hair is pulled back and placed with a sufficient amount of gel to achieve that ‘wet’ look. We love how

this look can either be effortlessly cool or seriously sexy!

Slicked back hair was seen at shows such as Balmain, Alexis Mabille and Gucci.

Not only did Fashion Week A/W 2013-2014 deliver some fabulous clothes and amazing new models, but also it brought us exceptional beauty and hairstyles. We have included the top 10 looks you should try for the upcom-ing seasons. Visit our YouTube page - http://www.youtube.com/dalliancemagazine - for tutorials on these looks!

The makeup was somewhat gothic at Zac Posen, Sally LaPointe and Veronique Branquinho as they brought back last fall’s favourite - berry/wine stained lips. Our

favourite products to re-create this look are: Revlon Just Bitten Lip Balm in Crush, Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in L’Impatiente and MAC Lipstick in Cyber.

By using a brush, hair tie, straighteners and hair-spray, the super straight ponytail is perfectly

achievable and elegant. This look has been seen at Alexander Wang and Jil Sander.

This season, bare eyes were a reoccurring theme, which is why at Vera Wang the lips were the

featured point. If you still wish to have the lightest bit of makeup on your eyes maybe you could re-create Derek

Lam’s faded eye look. Derek layered Estee Lauder’s Sterling Plums, Steel Lilacs and Smoked Chrome.

THE NEXT BIGDeSIgneRS

We’ve all endured a cultural awakening in the world of fashion these past few years, be it the breakthrough of the Nasty Gal label, the “Fuck Off” mentality or the Tumblr posts where pictures of sex, drugs and rock and roll are queued for days.

We have become so much more demanding, as fashion has taken a turn to give us what we want. Karl Lagerfeld is now using Cara, dying the models hair pink and making tweed sexy again at Chanel. The classic names seem to be capped on their visions,

which are needed. They have to stick to their mission statements and continue their loyalty to the origins of the name.  But I wonder, what is to come next?

While Alexander Wang will continue to blow our minds and Helmut Lang will deepen our love for the minimalistic 90s; there has to be something brewing in the cauldron. Here are some designers who I believe will be the ‘next big thing’

kAELENNot only does this girl have my name, but also she sums up everything I would want to have in my closet. With beautiful chiffons and items that are constructed with such precision its hard not to find a piece you love. Plus, whilst she seems aware of the trends walking down the runway kaelen has a unique vision of all things simple, edgy, and sexy.

A fRIEND Of MINEAfter stumbling upon these Australian beauties at PROJECT, A friend of Mine is now a solid brand that I will never put in the “ohmigawd what was I thinking when I bought this” pile. Not only is their blogroll amazing with addicting posts of in-

spiration, but also you can see their collection influences on a day-to-day basis. Slits up the leg, textures and simple patterns that will make any girl swoon.

WINSTON WOLfEAustralia most certainly is breeding some big designers; maybe it is in the water or the perpetual sunshine, but Winston Wolfe (no, not the Harvey kietel from Pulp fiction) launched a spectacular collection; think bondage meets MC Hammer meets the beach! Her leathers are perfectly cut and shaped to accentuate your most flattering parts.

The piece I am going to invest in will be the killer python shoes. Who would have thought to take this cut out ankle boot to the next level?! Plus, by adding any exotic skins to any silhouette will make me instantly obsessed.

The best part about these designers, is that androgyny is floating throughout every collection. Granted, I would not be too fond of seeing some men in these ensembles (merely out of jealousy), but the masculine approach is coming on again loud and hard. And I do not mean Celine Dion in that horrid white suit she wore circa 1999.

HAIzHEN WANGHaizhen Wang from the united kingdom has an interesting approach to this concept. He is taking design and structure and blending it perfectly; like a frappucino, with functionality and form.  Wang definitely has a tough ground to break through

with his last name, but based on this collection and a solid following he will cut down trees with the edge of his hand.

His clothing is the very essence of what it means to wear pieces that makes you feel so damn good! That jacket below will turn heads and cause car crashes as will the entire collection released by Wang.

When it comes to summing up the overall vibe of these designers; I think the clothes speak for themselves; quality fabrics and delicious silhouettes over the denim cut-off jorts we saw all last year (seriously girls, please stop. They are SO done, just like the studs and crop tops you will pair with them!). The elegance that each designer creates allows us girls to not

only grow up with our clothing, but also to show that mature confidence through our clothes while we watch the designer mature as well.

theNEXTgenerationbehind the scenes of cover and editorial shoot by fashion features director, Laura Woods

for the first editorial and cover of Dalliance we knew that we wanted to have a bohemian free-spirited theme. I’m particularly a sucker for beach-y editorial and I can spend endless hours scrolling through photo shoots featur-ing my favourite models, such as Dar-ia Werbowy and kasia Struss. It was pretty much decided from the get-go that we wanted to recreate a similar aesthetic; filling with flowing blouses and unique pieces of jewellery.

Brydie Mack is the owner of the pop-ular visual blog WOLfCuB Chroni-cles and after being a huge fan of her self-produced editorials and beautiful inspiration posts I asked her if she would shoot and style our debut cover and editorials. To my great excitement, she agreed! Once the planning began I then asked Livi Moulder, from top Australian modelling agency, Chic Management if she wished to star as

our cover feature model. With her tanned skin and long beachy hair I knew she would be per-fect.

The day of the shoot started out to be perfect temperature, not too cold nor too warm, and after we finished hair and makeup we drove to Cronulla Sand Dunes (after getting lost quite a few times!) in Sydney, Australia. We then walked a rather long trail to our prime destination with the suitcase and camera equipment on our backs! With so many amazing clothes from all of my favourite Aussie labels, an amazing photographer and model and the shoot ran somewhat smoothly; if you excuse the ferocious winds and our travelling mishaps. I hope you love the re-sults as much as we do and a HuGE thanks to Brydie Mack who worked extremely hard pulling in all the clothes from various PR companies, taking the photos and acting as a last minute hair and makeup artist!

LOVINGWHAT WE’RE

Whether it’s listening to Bohemian

Rhapsody on a lazy afternoon or flip-

ping through the latest Russh mag,

everyone has something they love! For

us it’s been Alexander Wang & Grace

Coddington for inspiration and the

comeback of baby-faced, Gemma Ward.

What have you fallen in love with this

month?

at Dalliance ...

BEFORE WE SAY

GOODBYE
