L&M CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY, $40,000 FUND

SWEETEN POT FOR FORMULA A RACE DRIVERS

NEW YORK -- For the first time in the history of the SCCA Continental Championship,

drivers will compete for the L&M Championship Trophy and a share of a special $40,000

jackpot.

The run for the L&M Championship Trophy and a $40,000 Championship point fund begins

April 19 at Riverside, California with the first of 14 races in the series which moves

from coast-to-coast and Canada.

L&M cigarettes, major sponsor of the four-year-old series, has posted an elegant

Championship Trophy and $40,000 jackpot to be divided among the 10 best drivers of

open-wheeled Formula A cars on the North American road racing circuit.

A new point scoring system has been established this year by the Sports Car Club

of America for drivers competing in this gruelling series. Points will be awarded to

the top 10 finishers of each race on the following basis: 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1.

And when the series is completed October 25 in Sebring, Fla., the driver who has garnered

the most points in at least three-quarters of the races will be crowned the North American

driving champion and receive the L&M Championship Trophy and top prize money of $10,000.

The next nine series point earners will pickup checks consisting of $7,200, $5,600,

$4,000, $3,200, $2,800, $2,400, $2,000, $1,600 and $1,200 respectively.

That's all in addition to the more than $400,000 in guaranteed purses -- including

$110,000 in a unique L&M Winner's Circle program for which drivers will be competing.

And to further sweeten the pot more than $100,000 in contingent awards by manufacturers

of auto products have been posted for the 1970 Continental Championship.

L&M WINNER'S CIRCLE TO GREET

TOP_ CONTINENTAL JIACEJDRIVERS

NEW YORK -- Drivers when they win an auto race traditionally get the checkered

flag, trophy and of course, first prize money. But this year when a driver wins

any of the 14 races that make up the SCCA Continental Championship, he'll not only

get the usual trimmings, but the privilege of stepping into the L&M Winner's Circle.

An L&M Winner's Circle enclosure will be built at each of the 14 tracks as part

of the L&M cigarettes sponsorship of the Continental Championship,, and give the

popular Formula A series a similar look as it moves from coast to coast and Canada.

The physical enclosure will provide the press with adequate room for picture-

taking and interview sessions while limiting the chaos that usually prevails at

the finish line.i

The L&M Winner's Circle of $110,000 in awards includes $4,000 to the winner

of the Formula A event and $1,000 toward the winning Formula B purse plus and L&M

Championship Trophy Fund of $40,000 to be divided among the top 10 Formula A

drivers at the end of the season.

Depending on race length, minimum purses committed by promoters in 1970 are

$20-25,000 for each event, totaling a guaranteed $300,000 plus the $110,000 from

L&M make the 1970 Continental Championship the richest ever.

New L&M trophies also will be presented in the enclosure to the top three

drivers of Formula A and Formula B.

HUTCHISON MOVES INTO SECOND PLACE

IN L&M CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY BATTLE

NEW YORK — Gus Hutchison, the Dallas chemical engineer, found the right

formula for his new Lola T-190 to take over second place in the point standings to

determine the winner of the L&M Championship Trophy — symbolic of the best road

racer in North America — in the SCCA's Continental Championship.

Hutchison moved ahead of Ron Grable, of Cupertino, Calif., and now trails

Montreal's John Cannon, 100 to 75, as the field of Formula A drivers prepare for the

Sept. 7th race at Lime Rock Park.

Grable, who failed to gain any points at Donnybrooke, is now being threatened by

John Gunn for third place. Grable has only an eight-point margin.

Newcomer to the top 10 is David Hobbs. the English driver who won both heats

at Donnybrooke to pick up 20 points to up his total to 39 and fifth place.
