The Libera Armchair designed by Jesus and Jon Gasca features a classic silhouette expressed in the fluid way in which the legs and armrests connect. Comfort is ensured by the generously sized armrests and the angle between the seat and back of the chair. Libera’s striking presence and focus on comfort means it is ideal for residential, hospitality or workplace settings. The frame of the Libera Armchair is constructed from solid Walnut or Ash stained in black, with the seat upholstered in either fabric or leather.

Our six Ambassadors have been helping to shape the program of Saturday Indesign, ensuring that we’ve got the most engaging and relevant topics to dissect. Here they share what they’re looking forward to most about this one-day design festival.

the way Leading

Kim BridglandDirector, Edition Office

Brittany PearceInterior Designer, Woods Bagot

Angus EdwardAssociate Interior Designer, K.P.D.O.

Phillip NielsenDesign Director, Regional Design Service

“Saturday Indesign is a chance for designers and industry professionals to experience design and products in an immersive way. I’m looking forward to seeing new talent or reimagined classics, expressed through curated and engaging exhibitions. Saturday Indesign will also be a great opportunity for networking and socialising, not often do we have days dedicated to celebrating design on such a large scale.”

“What I’m looking forward to the most during Saturday Indesign is relaxing and speaking to some of our favourite suppliers about what they’ve all been up to since the last time we got together, and to hopefully find a few new people to add to the greater family of collaborators that we work with.” Check out Kim’s On Belonging talk on page 13

Tom ReidSenior Designer, DesignOffice

“Events like Saturday Indesign are so important not only to promote the incredible Australian designers and companies on show but also to bring us together as a design community.

Our geographical isolation from the rest of the world has always been seen as a bit of a curse, but I think it has helped us to create such a strong community and confident Australian design identity – and it is events like Saturday Indesign that helps to foster this.”

“Saturday Indesign has been one of the great annual events that I’ve attended in Sydney and Melbourne over the years. It’s a great opportunity to bump into familiar faces, make new industry contacts, see new products and potentially pick up a great prize – I won a Cassina Maralunga lounge at Sydney Indesign in 2013!” Check out the 5 Things I Learned on the Dulux Tour, and A Connection to Place talks with Phillip on page 13

One of the key features of Saturday Indesign is the series of collaborative installations that are dotted around. Designers and exhibitors combine, letting you take in something innovative and fresh. Here’s a full rundown of what’s happening where so you can make sure not to miss a thing.

WMK Architecture is collaborating with Arthur G and Mokum to create a visual journey between “two seemingly contradictory design aesthetics.” The project “investigates how we could insert gestures within the space which of themselves could serve as a framework for the product display. It is an undulating and immersive installation that embraces both product and audience. Our intent is to highlight the narrative of the textiles through a three-dimensional framing of the custom furniture settings.”

Taking visitors on a digital journey, SJB is creating an Augmented Reality experience especially for Saturday Indesign. The AR will showcase a woven-like fabric of bricks, taking over the brand-new Brickworks showroom in Melbourne’s CBD. The interactive installation will “display an overlay of where to lay bricks for complex structures and gamify the process!”

The ownworld showroom is going to step back in time to a nostalgic incarnation of a 90s office. Titled “Open for Business” the collaboration between Dowel Jones and ownworld with polytec will focus on a series of the latest products for the workplace, with Dowel Jones integrating its signature, playful language across three new collections and one new addition.

One of the key features of Saturday Indesign is the series of collaborative installations that are dotted around. Designers and exhibitors combine, letting you take in something innovative and fresh. Here’s a full rundown of what’s happening where so you can make sure not to miss a thing.

As Saturday Indesign 2019 is bang smack in the middle of winter, Eco Timber has been collaborating with Mainichi to bring to life its showroom with a welcoming Winter Warmer theme – all under the banner of “old versus new”. An outdoor fire will keep people’s gaze, while Mainichi Design is creating recycled timber jewellery onsite and a sculpture that will develop over the course of the day. “With Manichi Design we have both been able to support each other in helping showcase the diversity of timber and get creatives to see timber and how it can be used in a new perspective.”

KE-ZU’s pop-up within Lumas Gallery in Richmond for Saturday Indesign is one space not to be missed. Partnering with Hot Black Design, visitors will experience an interactive element that explores KE-ZU’s message ‘2wards Zero Waste’. The installation will bring to life KE-ZU’s local production with U.S. design icon Bernhardt Design, including exciting new product releases from Milan, New York and Valencia.

“The opportunity to present the Adele Bates x Omvivo Lune collaboration in the beautiful Sub-Zero and Wolf showroom feels like the perfect coming together of kitchen and bathroom fittings for the modern home. TSAR’s luxurious rug collection further enhances the residential environment and brings an element of warmth to the space,” says Adele Bates on the collaboration. Adding, “Our installation echoes the clean, geometric lines of the Lune collection, and the careful use of colour highlights in its refined finishes palette. Soft curvature, subtle insets and shadow line details belie the grounding solidity of the pieces, invoking a desire to touch.”

Taking over the city of Melbourne for one day only – 22 June – Saturday Indesign has a jam-packed program of talks, exhibits, interactive installations and workshops. Set in the best design showrooms right across the city, Saturday Indesign will literally, and figuratively, transport you to the heart of the design industry. And here are some very important reasons to join the festivities.

1. Keep your finger on the pulse Design sits at the forefront. Designers themselves have the unique positioning of being harbingers of change and leading the direction in which our spaces are going. But how do you make sure you’re always ahead of the curve? It’s about continual learning. And Saturday Indesign is the solution. With the best design brands and suppliers on the ground all showcasing the latest releases and launching

brand-spanking new stuff – you will be hard pressed to come away without some serious industry knowledge.Add into the mix the wide range of talks and workshops hosted in the beautiful showrooms of the best brands across Melbourne, and you can tap into as much learning as you see fit. It’s the perfect opportunity to invest in your own professional development – because no one else is going to push your career forward but yourself.

2. Fuel your creative inspiration Staying inspired is all par for the course in the design biz. And what Saturday Indesign brings is inspiration in spades. With brands and designers collaborating on showroom installations and the latest product being showcased in ever-imaginative ways (see point 1), there will be creative inspiration at every turn. More than

just inspiration, Saturday Indesign offers an immersive and interactive experience – calling for you to make a contribution to the industry. Expect a sensorial overload as Saturday Indesign invites you to get involved by touching, feeling and smelling the creativity.

3. Make the relationships of a lifetime

In an age dominated by email and digital screens, the impact of meeting someone face-to-face, sharing a drink and finding common ground cannot be understated. Sometimes breaking down those barriers is all it can take to meet someone that could end up being a friend, a future colleague, a future employee, even a partner in crime. Saturday Indesign provides the setting, you just need to bring an open mind. Who knows who you might meet and where it might lead.

What inspired you to study architecture?

From a young age, I was curious about how buildings and cities were built with a real interest in all the different ways a house could be planned. From the age of six, we lived in the first home of a housing estate in Townsville and I would wander through the various construction sites trying to work out how everything went together.

What is life and work like in regional Australia, what are you finding that’s different and what might people not be aware of?

There is a cliché that ‘people in the country move slower’ and that you can’t expect things to change so fast in regional Australia. What I have found since moving back to the ‘country’ is that this sentiment could not be further from the truth – in fact, I am starting to believe it is the city that is in the slow lane… how was your commute today? Many of our residential clients are current or former farmers and when you see how much innovation is taking place to responsibly manage the impacts of climate change, drought and rehabilitate the land it is truly remarkable.

What do you wish you’d known when starting your career? One of the best pieces of advice I was given as a young graduate was ‘don’t become good at something you don’t want to do’. It made absolute sense but I wish I had known how I could use architecture to give back to the community earlier.

How do you see the design industry changing?Leaving Melbourne and viewing the industry from afar has offered time to contemplate and reflect on my experiences. I’m comforted to see more of the industry standing up to unpaid work or internships. As a student, I dreamt of working for one of my design idols but being from a lower socio-economic background I would have never been able to afford the luxury of being unpaid. I believe the industry is moving towards more equitable practice.

Which projects are you most proud of?I’m most proud of the opportunities we have to engage and share our skills with various community-led projects around regional New South Wales and Victoria. We are currently working pro-bono on a masterplan for a village of around 100 residents with the aim to inspire current and past residents to get involved more in their hometown and attract tourists to the region.

Meet Phillip Nielsen Phillip is the design director of Regional Design Service, a young practice that is breaking new ground in Corowa. Here Phillip shares what it’s like to practice regionally, what his design process is and a building that has left an indelible mark.

The creative process is no longer constrained to the limits of a piece of paper and a pencil. The new normal of the technological era presents a new kind of design thinking – as seen through the computer screen. But how can an interface ever become as authentic, as tactile, and as genuine as having face-to-face contact with design itself? Design has the capacity to motivate, inspire, engage, surprise and entertain by breaking through the screen and offering first-hand experiences. Sitting right at this important nexus is Saturday Indesign, a one-day design event that blurs the barriers between designer, product and the end user. Coming to life as an engaging and immersive event-cum-conference, Saturday Indesign is for dreamers, makers and most importantly designers. A highlight on the design calendar, Saturday Indesign reminds the community that design is more than a screen

– it is a social matter with the ability to inspire and delight. Designers have the power to translate strategies, ideas and concepts through physical forms. Saturday Indesign is designed with intention in how ideas and physical products are presented through more than just conference talks, and especially through more than a mere screen. Through a carefully curated selection of projects, products and speakers attendees are meticulously lined up to take in new kinds of learning and experiences. Putting everyone on an equal playing field, from first-time novices to design veterans and creative experts, Saturday Indesign pushes past the aesthetics of the computer screen and provides a gateway to experience the very best in an inviting and vibrant environment. There is nothing more energetic than opening your eyes and ears to

discover the industry’s brightest minds and revolutionary products. Being among the electrifying atmosphere of conversations, networking and knowledge will all come together to illuminate the special culture of design. Rather than clicking and filtering product lists on websites, Saturday Indesign offers inspiration overload in a short amount of time with an impressive roster of brands and showrooms for everyone to take delight in. Whether it’s at a talk, installation or the latest showroom space, Saturday Indesign delivers in creating invaluable memories by diving deep into the creative world. These days, we are taught to design for on-screen or off-screen, in RGB or CMYK – and at Saturday Indesign, the community is invited to step away from the screen and to experience creative brilliance in motion.

Why design conversation

Among a bustling digital age, creatives are adapting to new design methods and practices behind the screen, but how do we keep the design conversation going? Saturday Indesign may be the answer you’re looking for.

“I took about a year off travelling last year, it was great. I did so many different things and just had heaps of time to think and figure out my next move,” says interior designer Jess Humpston. And that next move landed her at Melbourne’s Foolscap Studio. As a studio that is always experimenting and creating some of the hottest hospitality fit-outs, Jess has been able to grow and develop her design talent. And serendipitously, it also helped that Foolscap’s founder Adele Winteridge also studied interior architecture at Curtin University in Perth.

Traversing mediums and scales

Before diving into interior design Jess studied fashion design where she had her “own little label for while”. Quickly though, she discovered it wasn’t quite the right fit. “I wanted to do furniture design and then I think I was wandering around the university and I came across interior architecture. It just felt like this really good melding of micro-scale human interaction, which I liked about fashion and the larger scale where you could control the environment and the furniture. It just seemed like it was good kind of layering and levelling out everything that I really liked about design,” shares Jess.

As many interior designers can attest, a large amount of the job requires computer work – whether drafting or compiling an FF&E. As a countermeasure to this, Jess is constantly exploring through hobbies, crafts and the simple act

of making. A maker as much as a designer, she is not afraid to let her creativity fly through other mediums. “I love to just work with my hands and actually see something through from conception to design and to making,” she says, adding, “right now I’m working on some furniture pieces. I don’t have a lot of time to work on it, but every weekend I just keep chipping away at something.”

The makings of a good designer

Bouncing from micro to macro scales is what makes a well-rounded designer in Jess’ eyes. These diverging scales are “what makes the difference between architecture and then the interior. I think a good designer is someone who thinks about the big picture but can skim all the way down to consider the small details,” she says. Elaborating that a good designer is someone that can “take a step back and consider a point of view rather than an aesthetic. It’s about being a flexible thinker”. How would Jess like to progress in her career and develop as a designer? She shares, “I think being more hands-on and having experimentation would be amazing, and an in-depth study on materiality and inspiration. I think that’s my happy place and I would really love to have integration.”

A crafted design approachFor Foolscap Studio’s Jess Humpston, travel, fashion and craft are all jumping off points for creativity. Here, we chat with the Saturday Indesign 2019 Ambassador about working between different scales, and a craft-driven approach to design.
