The Ascension of Our Lord May 12, 2013
Mothers Day
In todays Gospel, Jesus says farewell to his disciples. It is a parting tinged with sadness, but als
with the promise of joy. He offers the disciples three important parting gifts: understanding
Scripture, linking its message to their own experience of Jesus; he promises the imminen
outpouring of the Holy Spirit; finally, he bestows a loving blessing, promising to be with them untthe end of time. What connects the three gifts? Each of them represents a continuation of the lif
of Jesus in the hearts and lives of his disciples. Even though he will no longer be physically prese
to them, Jesus lives on in his Church: that is to say, in each and every one of us.
We also have the pleasure of welcoming Sr. Kay Duffin, CND to the pulpit this weekend. She whelp us make the connection between the liturgical feast of the Ascension and the gift of mothers
whom we celebrate in a special way this Sunday. Jesus invites us to abide in his Spirit, to create welcoming space for the Spirit in our lives. From the very beginning, was it not our mothers wh
made room for us: in their wombs, their hearts, their homes? Throughout our formative yearthis indwelling continued. Our mothers nursed us, changed us, delighted in us, fussed over u
worried about us. To the best of their ability, with the grace of God, they give us the closest thinthis world knows to unconditional love.
After giving us our roots, our mothers give us wings: they let us fly, trusting that the safe space o
love created will span the distance between them and their wandering adult children. So let u
give thanks to God for the gift of our mothers those still living with us, those whom God ha
already taken to their eternal home. Let us pray for all women who, in many and diverse way
have shared and nurtured the gift of life in us. Happy Mothers Day!
Mothers Day FlowersOur heartfelt thanks go to Mr. Martin Allaire and the Collins Clarke Macgillivray White Funeral Home for

Revitalizing Montreal's English-Speaking Catholic CommunitySince first establishing our roots in Montreal during the 18th century, the members of the city's Englishspeaking Catholic community have been profoundly dedicated to offering care and compassion to thosin need. Over the years, this commitment gave birth to a host of educational, health and social servicinstitutions. These institutions have made an invaluable contribution to the lives and well-being of peopfrom all religious, cultural and social backgrounds.
Today, however, in view of the changing nature of Quebec society as a whole, the evolving needs Montreal's English-speaking Catholic community in particular, it is clear that public funding is not adequatto effectively sustain the facilities and institutions to meet today's needs. The 21st Century CatholCommunity Campaign is being launched to address these concerns. Your contribution can make thdifference. Please give generously.
