Mother Teresa's Etiquette

People are often unreasonable, irrational and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.

Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God.

It was never between you and them anyway.

FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE

This past Thursday we opened the doors of the School of St. Mary for the current academic year. I look forward to working with the families, students, faculty and staff in the coming months. I will be learning as I go of the many wonderful programs and activities that are part of the school. I will do my best to discover ways that I can be present to the students, faculty and staff at the Primary Grade Center at our Everett location while at the same time being present to the students, faculty and staff at our Upper Grade Center. I trust that there will be some excitement and some confusion on my part in getting acclimated. Your prayers are appreciated. Many of our parents have already registered for the upcoming year of our Religious Education program at St. Mary’s. You can register for religious education online or by calling the Religious Education office directly with any questions. We will begin the RE year on September 18th. I look forward to getting to know the catechists, students and families of our RE program. Have you thought about getting more involved with Bible Study but failed to register? Now is the time to register for our upcoming Bible Study program. Two sessions are offered on Thursday’s – one in the morning, the other in the evening. Thanks for the hard work, prayer and planning of Cheri Klock in offering this great program to our parishioners and those interested in learning more about God’s inspired word in Sacred Scripture. Cheri leads the morning sessions and Deacon Jack Herrmann leads the evening sessions. The first gathering of Bible Study is this coming Thursday, September 1st. Don’t delay, sign up today! Sunday morning will be the last Mass that Fr. Kunkel will be celebrating at St. Mary’s. You are invited to attend the 7:30 AM Mass this Sunday, August 28th and enjoy a cup of coffee and refreshments in the gym following Fr. Kunkel’s final Mass here at St. Mary’s. We wish him all the best and assure him of our prayers and support. I do not know how to tweet on Twitter. I am told in order to ‘tweet’ you need to limit yourself to 140 characters. What would you be able to do if you had to communicate in just six words? Could you do it? I was sent an article referencing the editor of Smith Magazine, a monthly for writers, to tell their own six word story. Here’s a tiny sample of the six word stories that people have sent to Smith Magazine or have later posted on the internet; Used vice grip; now in hot water. A thousand wrinkles, a million laughs. I went hoarse shouting at God. Changing zip code didn’t change me. Food fight secret: Use canned vegetables. Picked wrong goals; achieved them all. Packing bags for college. Already homesick. Ignoring life’s problem, eating chocolate instead. My faith: sometimes stirred, sometimes shaken. Subtracting two wheels, buying more insurance. Nowadays I mostly cruise salad bars. Valedictorian and class clown. (Home schooled.) Beating grandpa at Scrabble feels wrong. Getting clobbered with my own trophy. Prepared my girlfriends for their husbands. Sometimes the bug, sometimes the windshield. Younger than everyone else my age. At war with pasta. I surrender. When all else fails, blame me. Lost in thought. Lonely in here. Only 2 days until AARP membership. Again? I vacuumed just last January. Renew vows every morning! Love you. Priest brings popcorn to my confessions. Life’s too short; eat dessert first. Where water was deepest—I jumped. Worked hard, got tired, slept well. I decided to be happy anyway. Someone had to pay the bills. Dressing uncomfortably makes me feel ugly. Never too late for second childhood. Parenthood; best thing I’ve ever done. I don’t know what to write. Changed my brother’s diapers once. Gross! Math was invented to kill me. Helpful, happy, home. That’s my dad. Now it’s your turn! Take a minute then write your own six word story or memoir. I am in Ohio this weekend celebrating a wedding. I hope you have a great weekend. I will be back in the parish and office on Monday. God bless you! Keep sharing the faith!

Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Do you know someone else who might be interested?

Are you wondering if you should become Catholic but have some questions first?

Then RCIA is right for you! RCIA (The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is a program for people who would like to become Catholic. We will meet on most Tuesdays, beginning September 6; and over the next seven months we will learn about the Catholic faith and prepare to receive the Sacraments of

Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. The first few weeks are the inquiry period. Though we will cover many important things, you do not make any commitments for the first month. Interested? Contact Fr. Brendan at 847-234-0205 x2517 or [email protected].

RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

August 17, 2016

Dear Friends,

As many of you are probably aware by now, August 28 will be my final Sunday offering Masses at St. Mary. I have been coming to your parish for the past eleven years and consider it to be a “second home.” I have met and worked with many fine priests, deacons and laypeople. I am pleased to count many of you among my dearest friends. I hope that my sacramental ministry and preaching have contributed in some small way to the spiritual growth of this wonderful Catholic community of faith. It has certainly been a great blessing to me!

My longtime friend and Mundelein Seminary faculty colleague, Fr. Chris Ciomek, recently became the Pastor of St. Peter Damian Parish in Bartlett. Fr. Chris does not have an Associate Pastor, nor does he have a resident priest, retired priest or religious to assist him with weekend liturgies. I am grateful that I will be able to provide him with some much needed assistance beginning in September.

I will always consider myself to be part of the “extended family” of St. Mary’s in Lake Forest. Please pray for me as I will continue to pray for you.

Yours in Christ,

Father Ron Kunkel

Matthew: The King and His Kingdom by Jeff Cavins and Sarah Christmyer

Matthew: The King and His Kingdom is an exciting study that explores the life and mission of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel. Matthew demonstrates how the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament are fulfilled in Christ, who establishes a New Law and inaugurates the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. Participants will see Jesus as the awaited Messiah who relives the life and struggles of Israel to become the faithful and victorious King. Set in the rich context of Jesus' Jewish culture, this study will help participants understand who Jesus is and what His life and teachings mean for us today.

Dear Father Mike Nacius and all the Vacation Bible School participants,

On behalf of the families we help throughout the year, please accept our deepest appreciation for your generous donations of baby supplies including diapers, pullups, wipes, and formula during the Vacation Bible School this past month. Terry Darraugh was kind to deliver these Friday to our center. I understand that the theme of this year’s summer school was focused on the sanctity of life which is so beautiful.

Your donations will help assist women with maternity and baby items needed to care for little ones. As many of our clients will attest, Aid for Women of Northern Lake County in Gurnee has been a lifeline to moms many times throughout the year. All who have donated to our ministry in one way or another impact the lives of many individuals you most likely will never have the chance of meeting.

You are most welcome to visit our center and see how your gifts are helping families right here in Lake County. Please continue to pray for our ministry and that our nation becomes once again One Nation under God with respect for all life from conception to natural death. A special thank you to the VBS Committee for coordinating this most worthwhile project. God Bless You.

For Life, The Volunteer Staff of Aid for Women of Northern Lake County Carol Ann Walsh, Director

We also collected $477 that went to Heather's house to buy groceries for the mom's and children living there.

Thank You!

This retreat is designed to help men discern God’s call to the diocesan priesthood. To be called by God to serve Him as a priest means to have one’s soul stirred deep within. Throughout a weekend of prayer, discussions, presentations of diocesan priesthood and group interaction, men begin to better understand God’s movement in their life. Exploring Priesthood Weekends will be held at Mundelein Seminary:

October 14-16, 2016; January 20-22, 2017; March 31-April 2, 2017.

For more information, contact Fr. Francis Bitterman at 312.534.8298; [email protected]

the Youth Ministry Website.

From July 22 to August 3, twenty-two pilgrims from St. Marys and Holy Cross (Deerfield) traveled from the US to Krakow, Poland, to join Pope Francis for the 31st World Youth Day. The theme of our pilgrimage was Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy. We spent time before and after the festival visiting important Catholic shrines, such as the Jasna Gora Sanctuary at Czestochowa, as well as other sites such as Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camps and Wadowice, JPII’s childhood town. While it was not a vacation, we were continually

inspired by the excitement from the other youth of the world, the new experiences we encountered, and the catechetical messages of bishops and cardinals from around the world. We endured many moments of suffering – such as a 10-hour bus ride from Berlin, running out of toilet paper, a 10-mile walk to our vigil site, and “mineral” or bubbly water – but we offered them all up with joy, for it truly was a

wonderful adventure with Christ. We prayed, celebrated Mass, shared reflections and were nourished by the examples of others.

As is tradition for WYD, Pope Francis spoke to the youth of the world and encouraged us that we are called to leave our mark on the world.

God expects something from you. God wants something from you. God hopes in you….He wants to make you see that, with you, the world can be different. For the fact is, unless you offer the best of yourselves, the world will never be different. The times we live in do not call for young “couch potatoes” but for young people with shoes, or better, boots laced…Today’s world demands that you be a protagonist of history because life is always beautiful when we choose to live it fully, when we choose to leave a mark.

As I sit here reflecting on the experience of WYD I feel afresh, nourished, and ready to be Christ’s spark in this world, to leave my own mark. Even as we were in Poland, terrible things were happening within our own country and around the world. It is easy to sit back and wonder

what the world is coming to. Who is going to fix this, to fix what seems impossibly broken? Pope Francis challenges us to go and to be that change, to be God’s face of mercy in our world and leave our mark.
