NEWSLETTER 3.3 TERM 3 (2017)
‘Do ordinary things with extraordinary love ‘
Mother Teresa
Dear Parents and Carers
In the last two weeks there have been a few extraordinary things done with great
love by students, staff and parents here at Mother Teresa Catholic College. Our
College Choir sang like birds and looked like angels in full winter uniform at the
Catholic Schools Performing Arts Festival at Balcatta. Our re-scheduled Athletics
Carnival ran smoothly in beautiful Spring sunshine last Friday with events
finishing ahead of time. And on Saturday our Gifted and Talented children were
wonderful ambassadors for MTCC at the Joondalup Campus of Edith Cowan
University where they competed in the Tournament of Minds – with more about
that later in the newsletter. And we all enjoyed Book Week – especially the
Parade. And thanks to the P&F Executive and helpers, the Book Fair during Book
Week was a hit – not to forget the Late Night shopping and bedtime story-telling
with Cinderella and friends on the Thursday evening. Congratulations to the
students and thanks to staff and parents for training and supporting these
students in each of these endeavours.
THANK YOU
P&F members again excelled at the barbecues for this morning’s Fathers’ Day
breakfast for about 300 Dads, Grandads and their MTCC children. The sun
shining warmly on an early Spring morning made for a happy, relaxed scene of
Dads and kids enjoying each other’s company over a bacon and egg rolls and a
cuppas at school. Special thanks to staffmember Raelene Ritikis for organising
the event along with staff-members and P&F.

WASTE WISE / SUSTAINABILITY
Thank you to everyone who supported the sustainability market stall on Monday. I am very proud of the
Green Team who set up and ran the stall. We sold fresh vegetables, worm wee, bunches of herbs, lemons,
eggs and lemon butter. The market stall made $216.75, which will go towards buying a water testing kit,
Silver Perch for the aquaponics set up, fish feed and more chicken feed.
A big thank you to Mrs Murray for making lemon butter using the school eggs. It was delicious! If you
did buy some lemon butter, could you please return the jars, so Mrs Murray can refill them?
We are collecting plastic bags to make a scarecrow, so if you have some, could you please place them in
the green bin in the Sustainability area. We are also collecting egg cartons, if you have any spare, we
would appreciate them.
GIFTED & TALENTED Tournament of Minds Competition
On Saturday the 26th August the Gifted and Talented children went to Edith Cowan University, Joondalup to participate in a Tournament of Minds Competition against other schools.
Ethan Rogers, Rowan Watt, Aiden Thomas, Caeden Louw, Kendall Forbes and Ben Byrnes chose a Maths and Engineering challenge to work on for the last six weeks and then presented it to the judges. Joselin Bobby, Sienna O’Reiley, Eve Darby Kavanagh, Bethany Forbes and Grace Prasad chose a Social Science challenge to work on and present to the judges as well. Later that morning both groups had to complete a spontaneous challenge with judges only.
Although some of the children were a little nervous, they worked well as a team. They showed super thinking skills, perseverance, co-operation and creativity.
Well done, you should all be very proud of yourselves.
Also a very big thank you to the parents/caregivers who brought their children by car/train to the venue. I appreciated your time, effort and support.

MINI VINNIES
MAKING JESUS REAL
WESTIE is an acronym that provides a meaningful way for students, teachers and
parents to ‘live’ the values of MJR on a daily basis. The acronym stands for:
Welcoming - being friendly and welcoming to others
Encouraging - Saying positive things to self and others
Saying Sorry - admitting personal wrong doing and taking steps to repair
relationships.
Thankful - showing appreciation to others
Inclusive - being inclusive in words and actions to
others
Enthusiastic - showing a positive attitude towards
school work, peers and teachers.
Students who display WESTIE qualities are awarded
with a WESTIE Certificate in their classroom.
We discourage the EAST approach to relationships:
Excluding, Argumentative, Sulking and Talking back.
Each class has a box for new toiletries to be placed in, that will be collected at the end of Term 3 and given to Saint Vincent de Paul Society. They make up little toiletries kits to be given to the Homeless, sick in hospital or hospices, etc.
Items must be new and preferably in packages.

Child Protection Week
Safeguarding Protective Behaviours
Parent Workshops
The Perth Catholic Archdiocese Safeguarding
Program is child focused and informed by a
fundamental belief that children have the right to
physical and psychological safety at all times.
Whilst the Safeguarding Program is working hard throughout the Perth
Catholic Archdiocese, we all must play our part to protect children and
keep them safe. During Child Protection Week, the Safeguarding Office in
partnership with WA Child Safety Services will be hosting a series of
Protective Behaviours Workshops.
One way in which parents can assist in increasing their child's safety is
by teaching them the Protective Behaviours Program and as such we
strongly recommend all parents attend a workshop. These workshops
have been designed to teach parents and carers how to increase the
personal safety of their children. Whilst there are many ways of talking
to children about their personal safety, it is important that we do not
scare them or leave them feeling unsafe, afraid or disempowered. Our
new resource Protecting God’s Children provides parents with
strategies to increase their children’s safety and cope with situations
that threaten their wellbeing and personal safety. The program
empowers the individual with the right to feel safe and sets out ways in
which they can gain the appropriate help.
