University of Minnesota, Morris Alumni Association Vol. 16, No. 4, Summer, 1980

Homecoming Planned For October 11 "Life in the Fast Lane" is the theme selected for Homecoming '80 at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Scheduled for Saturday, October 11, this year's homecoming promises to be one of the best ever, a chance to meet old friends, to make new ones, to renew an acquaintance with UMM and to help us kick off a year-long celebration of UM M's 20th Anniversary year. The weekend events promise "something for everyone," particularly for UMM's more than 3,000 graduates, including approximately 200 from our newest Class of '80.

Alums are encouraged to make motel reservations soon, as events begin as early as Friday, October 10. That's the night students will hold a pep fest, build and light a bonfire, and dance to the music of the New Alliance rock band. Alums who come early for Saturday's festivities are cordially invited to take part in these anticipatory events.

On Saturday morning, all alums are invited to attend the annual meeting of the UMM Alumni Association, which will take place in the Behmler Hall Conference Room. Officers will be elected for the coming year, and Gary Donovan, current Alumni Affairs Director, will give updates on alumni membership and activities, in addition to homecoming events.

The annual UMM Homecoming Parade will follow at 11 a.m., winding through downtown Morris and climaxing at the UMM football field . Coordinated through UMM's Student Activities Office, the event will feature floats and units representing a variety of campus groups and visiting bands.

At noon, alums are invited to bring their own refreshments and food to a tailgate party at the baseball parking area east of the football field. Barbeque grills may be set up, and special alumni parking will be available.

UMM Cougar helps gather wood for annual Friday night bonfire.

At 1 :30 p.m., the UMM Cougars under the aegis of their exciting new coach and head of men 's intercollegiate athletics, Dick Smith, will see gridiron action against the Bemidji State University Beavers. The Cougars are expected to continue stror19 this year against a young but determined Bemidji State squad, and to make a strong bid for another NIC title. Including the game with Bemidji, only four home games are scheduled for this season. Homecoming should provide alums with a splendid opportunity to witness one of those games, and to talk football with each other and with the new coach.

After the game, alums are invited to attend the annual Provost's Reception at the home of Provost John Imholte and his wife Lucy Imholte at 506 East Third Street in Morris. Plan to arrive as soon after the game as possible, since parking may be at a premium for this popular event.

At 8:15 p.m . the Morris Campus Union Board will sponsor a homecoming concert by the rock group Oak in the Edson Hall Auditorium on the UMM campus. Tickets will be available at the door the evening of the concert, and alums are invited to join the student body for this exciting event.

Popular with last year's homecoming alums, old movies of campus events will be shown again this year at the Sunwood Inn 's Cougar Room, along with possible videotapes of past concerts and other UMM subjects. Alums should feel free to drop into this free "hospitality room" throughout the evening, eat some popcorn, and discuss old and new times with friends .
