Kate (SlawinSKi) JohnS ’83 MCtransforming a hobby into a career What started as a journaling hobby while her daughter napped turned into a writing career for Kate (Slawinski) Johns ’83 MC. “I started writing online when the kids were at school. I found I liked it so much, it became all-consuming,” says Johns, whose husband and kids are her inspiration. “It was my husband’s idea to write a daily journal, which is awesome to look back on now that the kids are older,” she explains. “The kids have been the focus of many of my articles.”

For Johns, being a freelance writer is rewarding; she has the ability to make her own hours and along with being assigned articles from various publishers, she has the opportunity to write on topics that interest her. She explains how it is easier to tell a story and sell her articles when they’re on a topic in which she is highly interested.

Grateful for the flexibility her freelance business gives her, Johns also explains the drawbacks and challenges. “It’s not easy. You have to work really hard doing everything yourself, including marketing, writing, balancing deadlines and billing.” Johns has been published online and in newspapers such as Boston Now, Zonder Travel and AOL Entertainment, and has written reviews for various websites. She also contributed several chapters on cats to a multi-author book on felines.

Johns explains that her education at Medaille gave her the broad base of skills she utilizes in her everyday writing. She actually remembers quotes given by professors during her time at Medaille and uses them today for inspiration. “‘Proper prior planning prevents pretty poor performance’ is a handy rule of thumb for any freelancer,” she shares. “I also remember many things I learned from a logic class, which I think of almost every day when writing.”

Johns maintains three blogs to showcase her writing and is considering writing a book on her experience and struggle with having a stroke at age 47 and facing the passing of her brother six weeks later. Currently, Johns resides in Lock Haven, PA,“a writer’s paradise…surrounded by the beautiful splendor of mountains, and nature at her best,” she says.

a lifelong learner Dr. Creelman is currently the McCabe Clinical Eminent Scholar Chair of Psychiatry and Community Mental Health at the University of Florida’s Center for Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine in Vero Beach, Florida. He received the 2010 President’s Award from the Mental Health Association of Indian River County, Florida.

With an impressive array of graduate degrees and advanced certifications, Dr. Wayne Creelman ’99 MBA epitomizes the term “lifelong learner.” He has committed himself to patient care and scholarly activities related to ethics, medicine and religion; he’s currently working toward his master’s in divinity. We were pleased Dr. Creelman was able to take time out of his busy schedule to share some frank and insightful advice with Summer Handzlik ’08 MC ’12 MBA. SH: How has your MBA helped in your career and at your current position at The University of Florida Center for Psychiatry & Addiction?WC: The MBA, in a sense, allowed me to open up an entirely new division here. It allowed me to have the skills to recruit additional staff, to create a training program and to be fiscally responsible for the center. The MBA has been critical in helping me make our center financially viable and successful.

SH: How do you create a plan to become the best?WC: Achieving excellence in a particular field requires homework. Any time you make a decision to take on a new responsibility, you always have to weigh the pros and the cons. If you are going to create a business you need to create a document that is going to get you where you want to go. Running a business with a background of an MBA is being able to correct the direction you’re heading. It puts you in the driver’s seat as a leader. SH: What kind of advice would you offer a current student pursing a degree in mental health counseling? WC: I would recommend they try to have as much real world experience as possible before going into the field. A counselor has to know more than the patient. Always learn about new challenges and where the roadblocks will be. See them far in advance so you can get rid of them before they happen. You need experience in being able to give people very clear, very workable and very doable instructions on how to minimize anxiety in their life. You also have to know what you don’t know so you can refer the patient to a psychologist who is more highly trained or a psychiatrist who can prescribe medication.

Dr. Creelman receives the 2010 President’s Award from the Mental Health Association of Indian river County, FL.

the D3hoops.com top 25 poll showed the lady Mavs basketball team jumping nine spots to #16 in the nation.Coming off a successful fall season, winter sports kicked off with the men’s and women’s basketball teams storming the court in November.

When the Week 1 edition of the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll came out at the end of November, the Lady Mavs were slated as the nation’s 25th ranked team. This ranking came after Medaille upset the University of rochester in the season opener. The Lady Mavs have continued to dominate their opponents.

six weeks later, the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll showed women’s basketball team jumping nine spots to #16 in the nation. The Lady Mavs won ten straight games prior to the poll being published, and as of January 11 were 12-1 overall and 7-0 in AMCC play.

“Dashing through the streets...”

Friends, students, and alumni dashed through the streets of Buffalo in the 16th annual 5K Reindeer Run on Saturday, December 4, 2010. 725 participants started at Humboldt Rail Station on Main Street, raced through Forest Lawn Cemetery, and headed toward the finish line.

Following the race, participants were invited to the Kevin I. Sullivan Campus Center for an after-race party featuring music, food and refreshments. At the party, the New York Institute of Massage offered free five-minute massages.

This is an event you don’t want to miss next year! We hope you’ll join us on Saturday, December 3, 2011.
