So, Qantas ground- ing or no grounding, they’re busy. There are not the big city radars and screens you see in the movies at this central processing unit. Air Traffic Controller Dave Goodes (pictured left with Kirsty Campbell) said: ‘‘On a daily basis we handle everything from the bigger 737s to the single person in his little plane who is bringing it in from the outback for a service. ‘‘We keep them all separated within about a 70 kilometre radius and all by mental processing.’’ Being an air traffic controller at an aerodrome that lands one of the world’s largest aircraft, the Lockheed C5 Galaxy, may well be a job with a great deal of responsibil- ity but the role also has a true feel- good factor. Air Traffic Controller Paul Baishont said: ‘‘I think if we’ve had a busy burst, when it’s all finished and everyone’s happily on the ground or away again, knowing you’ve man- aged it safely and efficiently is pretty rewarding.’’ Not to mention the view across the MacDonnell Ranges from their perch. ‘‘We have the best office in Alice Springs,’’ adds Dave. It’s clear that life in the tower, where you may deal with anything from the trauma of a stricken light aircraft putting down in the distance, or attend to a 747 diverting for a medical emergency, is never a dull moment. Thankful for what we have The assertion (ABC News 25/10) by a prominent local MLA that Alice Springs is ‘‘economically, socially and culturally sick’’ is neither helpful nor correct. That the CBD has a few businesses which have closed or relocated is a reality. So is the fact that some new ones (e.g. the former QC Restaurant currently under renovation) are opening. Expensive rents charged by owners of commercial properties don’t help with the promotion or exposure of small business. The social fabric of this town remains robust and thriving as many who continue to live here can attest to. The vast majority of the people are friendly, supportive and invigorating. The continuing impact of a strong and vibrant mix of cultures within The Alice remain available for those who wish to embrace them. We are are a multi- cultural town with some 28 different nationalities being represented. Those of us in the industry are all acutely aware that tourism is being heavily impacted on, invariably influenced by the negative media images portrayed by some local, national and global media over the past 18-24 months (especially the summer of 2010/11) as well as the influence and impact of the lingering GFC, high Australian dollar and other social/economic determinants. We do have the spirit, however, to build it up again. Like all economic benchmarks, it’s cyclical. Many other places around the country and the planet are also experiencing a decline in tourist numbers. Take a look at Cairns and other regional areas for example. ‘Perception 101’ offers us all the opportunity to talk our town ‘up’ to each other and to the world. Focus on the positive and that’s what we’ll achieve. Focus on the alternative and you reap what you sow. Attempts at short- term party political point-scoring to the detriment of long-term sustainable growth is counter-productive to a town that has an essence of many sensational people, a wealth of spirit and a bright, progressive future. What we are missing is a nice place to go and relax that’s different to the normal coffee shop i.e. a tropical aquarium would be good, as would a tower that had a lounge or bar; something like cafe and shops underneath, but an attraction above. It’s really time locals had a nice spot that’s not as targeted to tour- ists but will bring them anyway! Emaly Scholefield Alice Springs Alice definitely should have a tower.
