DESCRIPTION

The Input aims to show the implications of Cloud Computing for learning and working and will discuss how schools’ ICT concepts and media competences might look like. But local, affordable solutions will be considered as well. Particularly in the absence of the financial means necessary to purchase expensive hardware and networks, local solutions could be favoured. For these purposes the School for Teacher Education at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland has developed the "Lernstick".

More for less –Live Systems Learning

World Computer Congress 2010 Brisbane

How can we make sure every student has access to media and IT education?

Does it make sense for schools to invest in:

– fast servers?

– expensive hardware?

– high-capacity networks?

• Advantages

• Scaleable, flexible and adaptable IT infrastructure

• Data storage without server maintenance by school

• Low operating costs

• No system management

Solution 1: Cloud Computing

• Disadvantages

• Data safety ?

• Availability of services

Solution 2: Individual Harddrives (e.g. Lernstick)

• Advantages

• Each student has a personal Lernstick

• Each student has a personal working space

• Comparably low costs

• Disadvantages

• Lernstick requires a computer

• Requires a minimum of 8GB

• More memory space is more expensive

ConsequencesCloud Computing needs a good network and not a luxurious PC.

Personal Learning Environments (PLE) can be realised on a server, via a network connection or on a Live System like the Lernstick, working on a Mac or PC.

It is easier for students do work on their homework on a PLE.

If the network isn't accessible from outside the school, a Lernstick could help as local solution.

The local Live System is effective, available and affordable: Access for all students!

How does the Lernstick work?

• USB flash drive with a bootable Live-System for Mac or PC

• Debian Live system

• Compilation of educationally relevant open source and other software, if the license terms allow for it.

• Default multilingual system

Lernstick Research, first part, May 2010

Sample group

152 students between 8 and 16 years of age were questioned about the popularity and use of the Lernstick, 74% primary school students and 26% high school students

Aim

To evaluate the experiences that a selection of schools, students and teachers have made with the Lernstick.

Method

The aim of the research suggested the use of a qualitative research method: a combination of open, narrative interviews and more guided, aim-oriented interviews.

communicating with parents

Statements of teachers

„Don't let yourself feel overwhelmed by the flood of information the Lernstick confronts you with. At the beginning you will think „this is incredible“. I soon began to limit myself, since a large portion of the applications is directed at older students.“ (Primary school teacher, years 3-4).

„I could have saved myself a lot of phone conversations, if I had provided information about the Lernstick to parents from the beginning and if I had given students the handbook as well as the Lernstick-DVD to take home.“ (Primary school teacher and person in charge of ICT, years 3-4)

Research, second part, planned 2010 - 12

The central research question examines to what extent students use the Lernstick to gather and process information and insert it into their previous knowledge.

This research question will need to be extended to mobile learning. The Lernstick is one among a number of other technological solutions (smartphones, tablets, iPads etc.)
