Information about the church

(taken from John Nichols ‘History and Antiquities of Leicestershire’ written C1790) Evington, in ancient writings was known as Avintone. It is bounded by Humberston, Thurnby, Stoughton, Knighton and the suburbs of Leicester. It is about 3 miles distant from Leicester and in the ecclesiastical division of the county, is within the deanry of Gartre Dedicated to St Dennis, the church consists of a bell tower (in which are three bells) a small spire, a south porch, a nave, chancel and two ailes, separated by four lofty arches over three of which are clerestory windows. In a niche over a fine large window at the East end of the North aile, is the figure of St Dennis, the patron saint. Within the church, which is remarkably neat, is an old round font on a small round base, surrounded by four round pillars and a semicircular kneeling steps.

About the Project The recording of the monumental inscriptions inside and outside the church was undertaken by members of the Family History Group of Great Glen U3A. All care has been taken to ensure accuracy of the transcription, however a visit to the church or churchyard to check with the original inscriptions is recommended. Words from some inscriptions were unable to be read for reasons such as broken stones, writing worn away through time etc., and so some blank spaces may occur in the transcriptions. The aim was to record the words exactly as they are found on the stone – so variations in spelling are a common occurrence. Some of the very old gravestones and floor slabs were transcribed and published in 1798 in a book called ‘The History and Antiquities of Leicestershire’ by John Nichols and this can be seen at the County Record Office. Where the script was found to be unreadable, a few words may have been taken from these transcripts and identified in [] brackets to help the researcher. These recordings are also posted on the Leicestershire Villages Web Site – under the section of Leicester http://www.leicestershirevillages.com/leicester/

This stone is erected by GEORGE ANTHONY LEGH KECK and ELIZABETH LEGH KECK his wife to perpetuate the regard in which they hold the memory of faithful domesticks and dependants. WILLIAM HALLOWELL was butler to G.A.LEGH KECK Esq, with whom he lived 12 years. Esteemed for ability, integrity, attachment and zeal. He died January 23rd 1916 aged 39 years. Affectionately regretted of the daughters who died young LUCY survived last. She was brought up from their childhood in the house of Stoughton Grange under the care of Mrs LEGH KECK to whom by good conduct she endeared herself and at length became her personal attendant. In that place of service she died by rapid consumption on the 24th January A.D 1827 aged 19 years. She was beloved by her mistress and of a character pleasing in the sight of God and man. Pure, humble, kind hearted, affectionate, conscientious. Her end was peaceful. And in cheerful submission to God’s providence. Her will was perfectly resigned Reader We have all a master in heaven / Hear His words / Behold I come quickly and my reward is with me / Be faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of Life

There are two books of remembrance in the church near the pulpit 1. Presented in memory of MARTIN GOODE by his wife PAM 2001- this book has names of those whose ashes are interred / scattered in the garden of remembrance near the porch. This garden has no memorials, and so the book is the only record. 2. This is a book of names for anyone wishing to commemorate the death of a loved one, either cremated remains or burials.

ANDREW BURNABY D.D. and ANNA his wife of Baggrave Hall: He married HENRY ANNE, daughter of SIR THOMAS FOWKE and ANN his wife of Lowesby Hall by whom he had issue eleven children, eight of whom survive him. He died the first of June m.dccc.lii ages seventy six years. Thou, therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 2 Tim. ii.3 Also of HENRY ANNE relict of the above. She died the fifth of January, m.dccc.lvi aged eighty one years. Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ 1 Cor. xv.37
