Dear Editor,Plants that have been paid for byvoluntary organisations and have beenplanted by volunteers for all to enjoy havebeen stolen from the Burnaby Gardens inEvington Park.

FLFLOOWERS OWERS ON VERGESN VERGES

Dear Editor,The Leicester City Council Parks services inpartnership with Urban Buzz have beentrialling the introduction of various typesof flowers into grass verges.Goodwood Road verge has two distinctareas.

The first is a meadow planting of wildflowers with the introduction of YellowRattle to parasitize the grass and reduceits vigour to enable the flowers a chanceof survival in a nitrate rich sward.

The second trial is a band of annualflowers to attract and nurture pollinatinginsects. There are two mixtures; one, atraditional cornfield wild flower mix. two,an ornamental annual mix with a

potentially longer flowering season. Bothsections of annuals are beginning to showsome attractive flowers, which is verywelcome considering how they havestruggled with the dry spell

Unfortunately, they are so attractivethat someone was seen cutting a bucketof flowers one evening.

The person that rang me was veryupset, as indeed was I and we all shouldbe.

Such selfish actions shame society anddishearten the volunteers involved. I verymuch doubt the lady that was responsibleis a resident or reader of the Echo, but ifshe is, I hope she will reflect on her actionsand realise her error.

In the meantime, I am hoping that whenwe get some rain it will not be too heavyto damage our flowers, but sufficient tobring forth a riot of colour late into theseason.

Can I just say that as a horticulturalist, Isalute all of the volunteers involved in theEvington in Bloom, your beds and tubslook delightful.Mick EatonHorticultural Advisor

and the highest officers in the council willno doubt keep their jobs. The reason a lotof councils are broke isnÕt because somepeople donÕt pay their taxes, and thecouncil donÕt retrieve it. I wouldnÕt laythe blame at local government politics butat central government and the financialeconomic system. The main reasoncouncils are broke at its roots is becausecentral government had to deal with the2008/09 banking crash.

I agree that non-payment of council taxis an issue and does not help, but itÕsalmost peanuts compared to the amountthat central government has cut to localgovernment. The bankers have got awaywith it and thereÕs a conspiracy of silence. Name and address supplied

WHITE POWHITE POWDER ALL OWDER ALL OVERVERMY GMY GARDENARDEN

Dear Editor,Three weeks ago there was a dense smokelike substance coming from Evington Parkinto my garden. This left a whitesubstance that looked toxic. The firebrigade told me to hose it down. Threeweeks later it happened again. I have just

found out that this was caused by four fireextinquishers being let off in the EvingtonPark depot which backs onto my garden.

I would have appreciated much earlierinformation from Park Services explainingwhat it was. Action was taken eventuallythrough Cllr. Deepak BajajÕs interventionbecause he agreed with me that this was aserious incident.Fliss Lacey.

ÒTo know your future you must know yourpastÓ (George Santayana)

This well known quote may resonatewith many people, none more so thanMary Powell, a participant on L4AÕS SocialPrescribing project.

As an only child, Mary had always beeninterested in her family history andlineage. On reading two fragile notebooksbelonging to her father, Harrison R Powell, written during his service as a soldier inWW1, she was intrigued by thecompelling information revealed in them.

Ô

ÒMy father was a very creative man, agifted artist who loved to sketch anddraw. No wonder then that his notebooks, diaries really seemed to paint pictureswith words.

ÒHis writing is neat, often brief, butsimultaneously chronicles the mundaneand miraculous, concisely capturing thefutility of war.

ÒA diary entry from 30th September1917 reads:ÔShells all around the Mess. Had a hellishtime 4 oÕclock. 7 oÕclock sheltering inMess when shell hit it. Buried one fellow -tried to get him out but couldnÕt!Ó

ÒAs his daughter it felt completely rightand natural to collate this fascinatingmaterial and share it with others. Beyondlearning about him personally, it sheds alight on important aspects of social historyfrom the First World War. In his case, simply being human - vulnerable like

THE SOCIALTHE SOCIAL PRESCRIBING PROJECTPRESCRIBING PROJECTSince Learning for the Fourth AgeÕs (L4AÕs) Social Prescribing project began in November 2016, weÕve had the privilege of working with over eighty olderpeople aged 50+ in a range of activities and events in Evington. Social Prescribing is a way of linking patients with sources of support within the community, providing doctors with a non-medical option that can operate alongside existing treatments. Working with the Patient group at Downing Drive surgery, andother local partners, our aim has always been to support the health and wellbeing of older people registered at the practice through an innovative programme of high quality learningopportunities, that are patient led and person centred, offering Ômore than medicationÕ. Research shows that learning in our later years can boost confidence, give a more positive outlook onlife, delay the onset of dementia, and help us to keep and stay well. We also passionately believe that you are never too old to learn and that older people have a valuable contribution to maketo community life.

Now, as the project nears the end of its funding this October, we wanted to share, in pictures, some of the significant achievements of our wonderful, talented project participants andvolunteers. Our thanks to all! AB

ThereÕs still time for you to get involved! We are busy planning a week long Ômini- festivalÕ jointly celebrating the end of L4AÕs Social Prescribing project and marking the ÔInternational Day ofOlder PersonsÕ taking place this October from 1st to 5th. From talks, exhibitions, fundraising events and a Movie Matinee in Evington village venues, thereÕll be something for everyone to enjoy.Look out for publicity and for more information contact Anita email [email protected] or phone 07964 091693

LLAATE SUMMER OUTINGSTE SUMMER OUTINGSBENNIOBENNION POOLN POOLSS

This delightful Nature reserve is just sevenmiles from Evington and is well worth avisit. It is situation on Bennion Road withaccess off Redruth Road (LE4 1EX). Thesecluded site supports a variety ofhabitats, two sizeable pools with islands,

grassland, plantation woodland, areas ofshrubs, hedges and newly planted trees. The carp lake was constructed in the1960s and provides an ideal nestingenvironment for coots, moorhens, ducksand swans. The upper pool wasconstructed in 2004 and is establishingreeds and iris marginal vegetation.

This Leicester City site is looked after bya constituted Friends of group that startedout as an angling group. Their meetingsprovide a chance for members tosocialise, but they also organisefundraising and other events. The groupwork towards the conservation andprotection of the site which providesopportunities for local communities andschools to get actively involved in theirlocal nature area Bennion Pools wasoriginally part of the large medieval deerpark. Then following the Normanconquest, it became part of BeaumontLeys Estate. The area changed handsagain in the later part of the 17th Centuryas agricultural land for Beaumont LodgeFarm.

Grass pathways weave their waythroughout the site from the picnic area, through grasslands that are planted withwildflower seeds to plantation woodlandmade of Ash, Alder, Hawthorn and Willow, dense with under storey flora.

Bennion Pools is a delightful green oasisfor anglers and visitors alike. See foryourself.

HEDGEHOGS

Hedgehogs are brilliant for gardens andneed all the help they can get at themoment due to their worrying decline. Please re-consider using slug pellets andthe like in your gardens as these areincredibly dangerous to hedgehogs. Please also check bonfires before lightingand long grasses, etc. before strimming.

A shallow dish of water and some cat ordog food will be much appreciated bythese prickly visitors.

If you see a hedgehog during the day, itneeds help. Please contact the localhedgehog rescue.

Increasingly secure gardens arecontributing to the decline of hedgehogs. They can roam up to a mile each night andneed to move from garden to garden tohunt. Leaving a small space at the bottomof a fence can aid them with this. Perhapswe could even make an Evington villageÔHedgehog HighwayÕ as suggested here:https://www.hedgehogstreet.org/help-hedgehogs/link-your-garden/

We feel so incredibly lucky to havehedgehogs visit our garden with so fewremaining in the wild and we are veryeager to see them thrive in the local area.

A NATIONAL CITIZENSSERVICE TEAM AT PILGRIMS

HOMES

Over the last fortnight Pilgrims Homes inEvington has been a hive of activity asthey have hosted a group of young peoplefrom National Citizenship Service (NCS).

NCS is a 4 week summer programmethat helps young people aged 15-17 togain confidence and life skills for thefuture. As part of the process localcharities are invited to pitch an idea forthe young people to participate in, andeach team has to select a charity that theywould like to be their social action projectwhich they complete in the final twoweeks of the programme. One of theregistered managers from Pilgrim Homescame and spoke about the residentsduring the bid. She invited a team to cometo replant some flower beds includingmore colour for the residents to look at,and also to arrange a picnic in the localpark for some residents to attend.

Team 10 was eager to choose PilgrimsHomes for their project. The teamselected this charity as they felt aconnection between old and youngpeople is very special and wold benefit allconcerned.

The team worked hard during the firstweek with planning and fundraising byholding two bake sales of cakes they hadmade at home. They raised over £200 tobuy a lovely array of plants and shrubswhich has made a huge difference to theoverall result. Coles garden centre staffadded a couple more pots, and the teamwere ready!

The final week was spent in backbreaking work with the young peopledigging and planting the beautiful plants.

Re-doing the garden will be extremelybeneficial for the residents in Pilgrimsresidential and nursing home, which hasresidents of all abilities, many who havedementia. Bright flowers and plants willmake the residents happy and the gardenwill now be a beautiful haven and moreaccessible for them.

The relationships between the youngpeople and residents grew further whenthe team took some of the residents toEvington Park for a picnic. The youngpeople had planned a cream tea withdrinks and snacks which they servedwhilst chatting to residents and followedup with some games and card tricks. Anevent that everyone involved is sure toremember.

This experience has been extremely lifechanging and all of Team 10 are eager tocontinue working with Pilgrims in thefuture, and the residents are eager tohave them back.

SARAH HALL LEAVES THE LAT PROJECTThis picture shows the final course run in Evington by Sarah Hall, the Leicester Ageing Together (LAT) project manager. This amazing lottery-funded4-year project is coming to a close. It has worked intensively in six wards in Leicester City to develop courses and other activities that reduce socialisolation in the over 50s. Now with a bit more support from LAT, it is up to local communities to take up the challenge and continue to developwhat has already been started.

Monday 9th July was a beautiful warmday and we had the pleasure of the EastMidlands in Bloom visit to Evington tojudge the beautiful displays and workwhich has taken place.Almost 40 local residents came to exploreand enjoy each otherÕs company. After abrief presentation by Chris Hossack at theVillage Hall, walking shoes came in veryuseful as we went through St DenysChurch to explore PiggyÕs Hollow wherewe were introduced to The ReverendAnthony Lees-Smith, vicar of St. DenysChurch. We walked through EvingtonVillage visiting the Village Green, TheEvington War Memorial, the Co-opGardens, Evington Park and finallyBurnaby Gardens to view the new plantingthere. We then arrived at Graceworks tosee their permaculture gardens.

At Graceworks the guests were treated toauthentic stone baked pizzas freshlyprepared by Tom Johnson and Vinay Patel, using locally grown ingredients from thegarden. Guests were also treated to awonderful buffet prepared by RuthTelford-Brown, Santok Odedra and VinayPatel. It was a wonderful atmosphere. I

was speaking to local residentHoward of Linden Drive, who is akeen gardener and he was totallyamazed by the aquaponic system.
