“Joyfully to love all, serve

all, and share Jesus Christ

with the world!”

Pastor’s Ponderings…

“Waiting Expectantly”

The people were waiting

expectantly and were all

wondering in their hearts if John

might possibly be the Messiah.

John answered them all, “I bap-

tize you with water. But one who

is more powerful than I will

come, the straps of whose sandals

I am not worthy to untie. He will

baptize you with the Holy Spirit

and fire...” And with many other

words John exhorted the people

and proclaimed the good news to

them.

–Luke 3:15-18

Advent is all about “waiting expectantly.” Advent literally means

“arrival.” We are waiting expectantly for the “anniversary cele-

bration” of the arrival on earth of God in the person of Jesus

Christ. It is a celebration of past, present, and future. We cele-

brate God’s arrival on earth almost 2,000 years ago. We give

thanks for God’s presence with us now through the Holy Spirit of

Jesus Christ working in us, among us, and beyond us. We also

continue to wait expectantly for Christ’s return:

For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we be-

lieve that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen

asleep in him… For the Lord himself will come down

from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the

archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead

in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive

and are left will be caught up together with them in the

clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with

the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with

these words. –1 Thessalonians 4:14-18

There is a “now and a not yet” aspect to Advent. Christ has not

yet returned to take us to our heavenly home, but Christ has al-

ready returned in Christ’s people, the Body of Christ (1 Corinthi-

ans 12:27). Before we go to God’s Kingdom, God’s Kingdom

comes to us through caring, compassionate people like you who

bring help, hope, and healing to the world.

Jesus said to them, “When you pray, say: “‘Father, hallowed

be your name, your kingdom come. May your will be

done on earth as it is in heaven. –Luke 11:2

I pray you have a blessed Christmas knowing you are a blessing

of God’s love to the world.

In Christ’s Love,

Pastor Steve

There are many ways that you can be involved in

Montrose United Methodist Church! As a new year

approaches please consider serving on one of our church’s

many committees.

Not sure what each committee does? What kind of

time commitment it will be or want to know more? Please

check out our website www.montroseumc.org and click on

the “Groups and Ministries” tab, then “Church

Committees” There is a document with all the places you

can volunteer, how much time is required and what the

responsibilities include.

Get to know the committees that

serve your church! Each month

communications committee will be

spotlighting different committees,

and telling you, what that committee

does, how they help the church and

who you can contact to get involved!

--Wednesday, December 9: Luncheon, 12:00 noon.

Program: Music at Noon

Hostesses: Faith Circle

NO RESERVATIONS are needed. Just come and join us.

Cost of Luncheon is $5.00

Come by 11:40 to pay and find your place. There will be

Christmas cards to sign for our “shut-in” members. The Pro-

gram begins at noon with the lunch and short meeting to fol-

low at 12:30. The men who assisted with the Bazaar and al-

ways wash the dishes will be our guests.

The BAZAAR was a HUGE success, thanks to everyone who

assisted in any way. From chopping of onions, carrots, and po-

tatoes for the luncheon soup to baking items for the Bake

Shop, everyone helped to make the Down Home Country Ba-

zaar a success. At the writing of this article, not all final num-

bers are known. We can tell you that the Bake Shop went over

$2,100 and Granny’s Attic brought in just over $1,000. Final

numbers will be in the next newsletter. The Thursday after-

noon “Crafty Ladies” will be on vacation until further notice.

The Purpose of United Methodist

PECANS Have ARRIVED

The Pecans arrived on Monday,

Nov. 16th. These pecans are

arriving late because they have

just been harvested, shelled, and

bagged; this year’s crop. The

members of the Missions Com-

mittee will be selling pecans af-

ter each service for the next several weeks or they will be

available in the church office, Monday through Thurs-

day. Each one pound bag, full halves or pieces, will cost

$11.00. Checks can be made out to MUMC with “Pecans”

on the memo line. The proceeds from the sale of the pe-

cans will go to defray expenses of the Community Garden

located at the corner of So. 1st Street and Mesa Ave-

nue. The bags of pecans make excellent gifts for those

people who do nice things for you and you never know

what to get them. Make sure you get enough pecans to last

the whole year and still have some left next November

when you need to bake items for the Down Home Country

Bazaar. Pecans last a very long time if they are kept in the

freezer.

Hilltop Domestic Violence Services are

seeking individuals willing and able to

make pillowcases for our children who

come into shelter. In these pillow cases

we will fill them with books, hygiene

items, personal needs, and other gifts or

forms of entertainment as our current

donations allow. We are also looking to

add drawstring bags to our shelter for

the women to be able to store their toiletries and hygiene items.

Donation Needs

Toiletries: new in package pajamas and undergarments in

various sizes (bras, underwear, socks), shampoo, condition-

er, tooth brushes, tooth paste, hair brushes, razors, soaps,

feminine products, etc.

Bedding : pillows, blankets, sheets (twin & full sizes)

Bath: towels, wash cloths, bath mats, toilet paper, etc.

Children’s programs: diapers (all sizes), baby wipes, bottles,

baby/kid shampoo, lotion, coloring books, journals, crayons,

markers, art supplies, etc.

Kitchen goods: dishes, silverware, cooking utensils, dish

soap, pots & pans, paper goods, dish towels, sponges, dish

cloths, etc.

Miscellaneous: gift cards (gas stations, Wal-Mart, Target,

grocery stores), bus passes, laundry detergent, office sup-

plies, etc.

Food: non-perishable products, boxed foods, cans, coffee,

crackers, condiments, etc.

all clothing donations be made to Second Impressions Con-

signment at 323 N 4th Street in Montrose. When making

your donation, please inform Second Impressions staff that

your contribution is on behalf of Tri-County Resources. This

allows our clients to be able to pick out their own clothing at

no cost to them.

13

Volunteers: We are attempting to build

our volunteer base to help support the

mission of Hilltop’s Domestic Violence

Services. If you or someone you know is

interested in donating their time, please

visit our

website at www.htop.org/about/volunteer

and submit a volunteer application. Your

help is greatly appreciated!!

Recipients of the Advent offering:

Sharing Ministries is our local

food bank that has outgrown its

space. This offering will go to

help build a new and bigger one,

enabling our community to

better serve those in need.

Association of Montrose Churches Rent/Utility fund is ad-

ministrated by volunteers who provide assistance to residents

in need of keeping their utilities on and remaining in a resi-

dence. This fund is a matching process with the applicant,

and can be used once a year.

Heifer International has provided needy families around the

world with livestock ranging from

water buffalo to bees as a stepping

stone to self-sufficiency. They help

many families install treadle pumps,

use biogas stoves, and plant trees.

that on the envelope. Otherwise, the money will be di-

vided among them.

The Abraham Connection Homeless Shelter

We are looking for individuals or groups interested

in providing the evening meal on the fourth Sunday

of the month for The Abraham Connection Home-

less Shelter in Delta. Our church has committed to

providing and serving this meal from November thru

April. The shelter is currently housed in the base-

ment at the Delta United Methodist church. Their

new shelter facilities are still under construction and

should be completed in the very near future. For

now meals can be cooked at home and brought down

to their church basement or you may also prepare the

meal using their kitchen. Once the new shelter facil-

ity is completed, meals will need to be prepared in

the new kitchen of the homeless shelter. You will

find the sign-up sheet on the Welcome Center in the

breezeway. The youth have already graciously vol-

unteered for the month of November. What a perfect

way to volunteer and give back to others in need!

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Criminal break-in at the

MUMC

In the early morning hours of Nov. 18, 2015,

there was a successful break-in of the church

through the boiler room window. The window

was pried open and the intruder was stopped in

the hall when the motion detectors were set off.

He/she promptly exited. The police and a

church member responded to the alarm and it

was determined that neither the church nor its

contents were harmed. BUT this does point out

that we are part of a desperate society and we

need to be ever more vigilant. The Board of

Trustees has always had the safety and security

of the people and the building foremost in its

discussions. A sub-committee of the Board of

Trustees has been diligently meeting for several

months to come up with a comprehensive safety

and security plan. . . as well as proposed costs.

This recent intrusion into our sacred space has

made this discussion even more urgent. You

will become informed as the committee makes

their recommendations in the future. In the

meantime, we are blessed to have the security

measures that are currently in place.

21

Thank you! The congregation of the Montrose United Methodist Church thanks the eight dedicated women who gave up their Saturday morning to decorate the interior and exterior of the church. Amid the joyous sounds from the Appalachian Winter Lessons and Carols sound track of 2014; and the glorious piano practice of Laurie Ranum, Thanksgiving decoration were taken down and put away, Christmas trees were erected and decorated, garland with bows hung, and wreaths placed in proper places. Then MOST important of all, vacuums ran, tools, ladders and boxes put away and trash hauled off so that the church could be in its proper form for service the following day. Please give these ladies your thanks and appreciation: Janice Becker, Nancy Johnson, Barbara Kastellic, Beth McCorkle, Connie Pittenger, Kris Schledewitz, Krista Thompson and Kathy Zelazny.

Advent Prayer Stations

Advent Prayer Stations will be set up in Park

Ave. Hall on December 6th. Spend some time

reflecting on what the season is really about:

Connecting, Focusing, Praying, Seeing, Wishing,

Waiting and Pondering.

They will be available all morning as well as

Sunday evening.

23

We call this a

Mitten Tree,

but it is so

much more. It

is the place to

hang hats,

gloves, scarves,

socks and other outer apparel for

children and adults. We will offer

these new items to those who come to

us in need during the Advent Season,

those who attend our Christmas Day

dinner; and then we will take the re-

mainder to Shepherd’s Hand and the

Re-lJ public schools.

Missions’

Advent Wreath-lighting

As always we will be celebrating advent with the advent

wreath-lighting at all 3 services each Sunday. You know

your schedule better than we do so please help us cele-

brate the season by participat-

ing in this meaningful begin-

ning to each worship service .

Sign up sheets can be found

in Baldridge Hall.

Yes, Virginia, there will be a Christmas Day Dinner!

The many requests for this community outreach and

fellowship opportunity have moved Beckie Pendergrass

to capably organize this dinner for us.

Now it is up to us to provide the food, the time, the sup-

port, and the money to make it happen! Signup sheets

are in the passageway.

Someone will contact you. If you are not able to do a

lot of kitchen work, perhaps you would be a greeter or

host at one of the tables.

Donations of turkeys, ham, chicken broth, cream of

chicken soup, turkey cooking bags, eggs, sweet pota-

toes, corn, beans are requested, as well as the filling of

the pantry with items for those who attend. When you

bring these items, remember families who could use di-

apers, formula, paper goods, cereal, and other staples.

Lessons & Carol attendees have been asked to bring

food for that as well.

You will note that the “mitten tree” will be up for cold

weather apparel—please note that we ran out of men’s

hats, gloves and socks last time.

Good Morning,

I Had the most

fantastic journey last night.

I wish to have you

accompany me as I relive

this incredible journey.

A young man picked me up at my house at 6:30 Thursday

evening. We came to the church… As I entered the church (after

being helped out of the car and had the church doors opened for

me) sounds of angelic voices greeted me. I sat down on a very soft

pew and was gathering my wits… because of the music, the

peaceful and tranquil atmosphere that surrounded me was so

soothing.

To Communicate with God in His sanctuary is so

comforting, I was encircled with wings of angels and I knew God

was holding me in his arms. The words spoken from scripture was

by Trish (it was her young man that picked me up). Her calming

voice entered my soul… I truly felt washed with joy, peace and

love.

I was sitting next to a very dear friend that has a strong

voice, so when songs were sung, I was immediately touched by the

Holy Spirit, what a glorious feeling.

After this experience I was driven home by the same young

man and his sweet heart. I really had to share this journey with you

because I love you and wish for you to feel the same as I.

This experience is called the Taize Service which is held

the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m.. I wish to invite you

to share in God’s infinite Love and hear angelic voices.

Blessing and love to each and every one of you.

-Shirley Langland

P.S. Here is one of the songs- its such a marvelous message;

“Come to me, come to me weak and heavy laden, trust in me,

Lean on me, I will give you rest” Amen!

The United Methodist Men are re-

questing your help. Over the past

15 years they have contributed

over $66,000 in support of the MUMC youth,

various local charities, and numerous internal church pro-

jects. One of the primary ways they raise funds is through the

cash back programs at the local grocery stores. It costs you noth-

ing and helps support your church programs – but you have to

sign up for the men to get the cash back. Please take a few mo-

ments and sign up so the men can continue to be a vital part of the

MUMC.

longed to Sue, unfinished dreams of lovely pro-

jects. He said he knew that Sue would approve of his

decision to donate it to our group to craft comforting

expressions of love for others. Our shawls for the

next year ( and beyond?) will

be from Bob's generosity and

Sue's love of beautiful

yarn. We wanted to express

our thanks. Thank you so

much, Bob and Sue.
