The Monthly Weather Review - Australia is produced by the Bureau of Meteorology to provide a concise but informativeoverview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in Australia for the month. To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Althoughevery effort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until completequality control procedures have been carried out. Any major discrepancies will be noted in later issues. We are keen to ensure that the Monthly Weather Review is appropriate to its readers' needs. Units of measurementExcept where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometresper hour (km/h).

Observation times and periodsEach station in Australia makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past24 hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the followingconventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of thatday.Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of thatday.Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may haveoccurred on the previous calendar day.Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Climatological valuesThe climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from the years1961–1990. They are not shown for sites with less than 25 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculatedreliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from all available years of record; the number of years can vary markedlyfrom site to site.

RecordsThe tables of records are not exhaustive, as they only show sites with at least 30 years of record. This may exclude locationswhere a new site has been established; this means even some major cities and towns may not be listed.

MapsThe temperature and rainfall maps are intended to give an overview of the country. There could be discrepancies between thevalues shown on these maps and those at individual locations, as a result of the way the maps are generated. A wide range ofmaps of rainfall, temperature and other variables, covering the whole country and smaller regions can be found atwww.bom.gov.au/climate/maps.

Accessing dataTables of daily values for selected sites are included toward the back of the Monthly Weather Review. Data from many moresites and for other times are available from www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/.

Significant weather

Heavy rainfall and abnormally high tides inQueensland

In the 24 hours to 9 am on 23 January, high rainfalltotals were recorded about the coast and adjacentinland areas between Townsville and Mackay, andalso from Brisbane down to the Gold Coast. Over150 mm was recorded northwest of Mackay, andnorth of Proserpine on the central coast, and over130 mm at Mackay Airport. Brisbane recorded100 mm, its wettest day in two years (since thepassage of ex-tropical cyclone Oswald in January2013). Abnormally high tides around parts ofsoutheast Queensland, combined with the heavyrainfall, led to flooding in low-lying areas.

Riverine flooding in Queensland

From 20 January until the end of the month, majorflood warnings were issued for the Georgina Riverand Eyre Creek in western Queensland. Significantrainfall was recorded in the upper parts of theGeorgina catchment in the first half of January. Over100 mm was recorded at Urandangi in the two daysending 9 January, with 85 mm recorded to 9 am onthe 9th (the average monthly rainfall for January atUrandangi is 63 mm).

Fires

A very hot air mass affected South Australia throughthe first week of the month. On the 2nd, particularlyhot and windy conditions developed over the southand west of the State ahead of a trough. Severe firedanger was observed in fourteen out of the fifteendistricts, with eight of those being extreme orcatastrophic. The following day was just as significantwith twelve districts observing severe or higher firedanger. Several fires started during the day of the 2ndincluding the large Sampson Flat fire in the MountLofty Ranges.

Bushfires were burning in western Victoria in theLittle Desert National Park and Black Range StatePark, starting on the 3rd. Three separate fires in theLittle Desert Park had burnt almost 4000 ha by the5th.

Also in Victoria, a 5700 ha fire at Moyston, west ofArarat, destroyed two homes and damaged around 90other properties. Several thousand stock animals, mainly sheep, were either killed outright or needed tobe put down due to injury. The fire was under controlby the 4th.

On the Mornington Peninsula, a 128 ha fire atHastings on the 4th threatened houses when a fire at

the rear of a factory escaped into bushland and burntsome fencing and sheds.

Strong winds

On the 4th in New South Wales, a very short-livedstrong wind event at Salt Ash caused injuries when awater slide was ripped from its moorings and raisedseveral metres into the air.

A low moving over Bass Strait and down Tasmania’seast coast brought strong winds on the 14th,particularly to the northwest, where some minordamage was reported. There were further strong andgusty winds, with localised damage including somepower outages, as a cold front crossed on the 16thand vigorous southwesterly winds persisted into the18th.

Frequent strong winds during January resulted in asignificant reduction in yield of leatherwood honeyfrom Tasmania’s west coast; one producer wasestimating they would produce only 50 tonnes againstan average of around 250 tonnes.

On the 28th, a strengthening high pressure systemover the Southern Ocean drove strong to gale forcesoutheasterly winds over the southern Mt LoftyRanges in South Australia. At Sellicks Hill, windsaveraged 50 km/h to 70 km/h from 6 am to 8 pm,with mean wind speeds reaching gale strength for aperiod in the late morning and again in the mid-afternoon.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain

A severe thunderstorm on the 4th produced rainfalltotals of 38 mm in 15 minutes at Grassy Gully and40 mm in 30 minutes at Barrengarry, both in NewSouth Wales.

On the 7th, Melbourne was hit by severethunderstorms in the afternoon, with wind gusts up to100 km/h. There were reports of widespread poweroutages, wind damage and fallen branches with over1000 calls to the State Emergency Service (SES).Fourteen skydivers were caught in the storm, landingon the beach and in the water at St Kilda.

Also on the 7th, extensive thunderstorms activitydeveloped over the south of the State of SouthAustralia. Over the eastern districts a wind gust of104 km/h was recorded at Keith with a thunderstormand there were reports of a roof having been lifted atKaroonda.

On the 8th, a tropical disturbance developed in the farnorth of South Australia and extended a trough of lowpressure through the Northeast Pastoral District. Over

the coming days the disturbance remained slowmoving before deepening over the south of the Sateon the 12th and moving into Bass Strait on the 13th.Over this period significant rain bands andthunderstorm activity affected the north and east ofSouth Australia with several reports of flash flooding.Noteworthy rainfall totals for the event included165 mm at Arkaroola in the Northeast PastoralDistrict, 135 mm at Blinman in the Flinders Ranges,134 mm at Tieyon in the Northwest Pastoral District,123 mm at Mannanarie in the Mid North District and97 mm at Claypans in the Murraylands District.

On the 9th, several thunderstorms in New SouthWales produced rainfall totals of more than 30 mm in30 minutes, including at Merriwa, Blacktown, andUlladulla. Very heavy rainfall was recorded in thewestern half of Victoria, with flash flooding in Bendigoon the 9th. Reports of 100 mm of rainfall in an hourwere recorded in parts of the region, and the SESreceived 156 calls for help to deal with flood damageand leaking roofs.

A low moving slowly down Tasmania’s east coastbrought very heavy rainfall to the east and southeastof that State on the 13th and 14th, with some sitesreporting well over 100 mm in the 24 hours to 9 amon the 14th. Flash flooding of houses and roads wasreported, especially around Kingborough; the SESreceived 27 calls for assistance and one insurerreceived over 500 claims enquiries. The wet weatherdamaged cherries and stonefruit, especially in theHuon Valley, resultant boggy ground impeded somefarm operations, and mussel and oyster growers wererequired to delay harvest because of the dangers fromincreased runoff. Many sites in southeasternTasmania had their wettest January day on record, and Hobart had its wettest January day since 1916.

Severe thunderstorms developed over the Wide Bayand Burnett district of Queensland on the 19th, with a94 km/h wind gust recorded at Maryborough, andheavy rainfall that led to flash flooding in the area.

Heavy rainfall also occurred on the morning of the19th along the central coast of New South Wales, including a 24-hour rainfall total of more than 100 mmat Wyong. The heavy rain combined with very hightides, causing widespread flash flooding.Thunderstorms on the mid-north coast in theafternoon also caused rainfall totals of up to 64 mm inone hour at Kempsey, with reports of a funnel cloud10 km west of Guyra and 2 cm to 3 cm hail reportednear Glen Innes.

Large hail was observed between Dalby and Oakey inthe Darling Downs District of southeast Queensland

on the 20th, with severe thunderstorms extendingnorth into parts of the Capricornia and CentralHighlands districts. In Dysart, trees were blown downby strong wind gusts associated with the passage ofa severe storm.

On the 21st, severe thunderstorms affected parts ofthe Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Coast andWhitsundays, and Capricornia districts, producingheavy rainfall south of Townsville (40 mm in 30minutes), South Yaamba (37 mm in 30 minutes) andWilliamson RAAF (near St Lawrence) received 69 mmin one hour. A number of swift-water rescuesoccurred in the evening in Springsure, and to thewest of Rockhampton, and also around the Gladstonearea on the 22nd.

Wind gust of 87 km/h at Kempsey and 94 km/h atCasino in New South Wales were observed on the25th, with reports of trees and power lines downedby strong winds in Sherwood.

Severe thunderstorms developed over the southeastof Queensland on the 26th, including the DarlingDowns and Granite Belt, Wide Bay and Burnettdistricts, with large hail up to 5 cm in diameterobserved at Leyburn (between Millmerran andWarwick) and large branches brought down atYarraman.

Heavy rain across much of the central and northerncoast of New South Wales on the 26th and 27thproduced rainfall totals for the 48 hours to 9 am onthe 28th as high as 219.4 mm at Coramba, near CoffsHarbour, and widespread reports of 10 mm in 10minutes. The heavy rain caused flash flooding inSydney and burst the banks of the Parramatta River, with widespread flash flooding in the Port Macquarieregion as well as a flood rescue near Coffs Harbour.

On the 31st severe thunderstorms in southeasternQueensland produced golf ball-sized hail at AcaciaRidge and hail between 2 cm and 3 cm in diameter atHarrisville (north of Boonah) and Hawthorne. On thesame day in New South Wales, thunderstormsproduced hail on the north coast, with reports of hailup to 2 cm in diameter near Alstonville, and hail up to3 cm in diameter at Woolgoolga and Coffs Harbour.

Tropical cyclones

Tropical cyclone Ola formed over the eastern CoralSea on 31 January west of New Caledonia. Thepresence of the system, although well offshore, led toincreased southerly winds and tides along thesouthern half of the Queensland coast in earlyFebruary.

Synoptic summary

The start of January 2015 saw the arrival of the northAustralian monsoon. A monsoon trough remainedactive across the tropical north with two tropical lowsforming over the Kimberley during the first threeweeks of the month. Elsewhere, a series of troughsand associated strong lows moved across thesouthern half of the continent, at times extending intothe south of the Northern Territory and southernQueensland, while a number of cold fronts trackedthrough Tasmania and southern Victoria duringJanuary.

A tropical low which developed over the inland northKimberley at the start of January tracked slowlysouthwestward before turning eastward across theKimberley and passing into the Northern Territory inthe second week of the month. A cloudband andassociated troughs expanded over the interior andsoutheastern Australia towards the middle of the

month, bringing heavy rain and cool conditions tomuch of central and southeastern Australia.

A deepening low in southern Victoria with a troughover western Queensland and New South Walesmoved eastward through the southeastern mainlandand Tasmania at the start of the third week, followedby a cold front tracking across Tasmania. Towards theend of the third week, a weak tropical low entered thenorthern Kimberley from the Northern Territory andmoved in south-southwest direction before dissipatingoff the Pilbara coast. In the fourth week, a broad areaof low pressure was dominant across northern andeastern Australia, with a ridge of high pressureextending from the southeastern Tasman Sea over theeastern seaboard. A number of cold fronts passedsouthern Victoria and Tasmania. A developing lowmoved south along the western Tasman Sea at theend of January.

Rainfall

January rainfall was below average for most of theCape York Peninsula and parts of the west ofWestern Australia, particularly in the central south.Rainfall was above average in a broad band extendingfrom the Kimberley in Western Australia, through theNorthern Territory and covering most of southeasternAustralia as well as smaller parts of eastern andwestern Queensland. Nationally, rainfall was 44%above average.

Total rainfall in January 2015

Decile rank of total rainfall in January 2015

Monthly rainfall was above average for most of theKimberley and adjacent parts of inland WesternAustralia, across nearly all of the Northern Territory, the eastern half of South Australia, westernQueensland and smaller areas along the east coastand across most of New South Wales, Victoria andTasmania. January rainfall was in the highestten per cent of historical observations for much of theinland of the Northern Territory extending through tosoutheast South Australia as well as scattered smallareas in eastern Australia, the Top End and theKimberley. Rainfall was below average across muchof the Cape York Peninsula in northern Queenslandand also below average for a large area extendinginland from the south coast of Western Australia aswell as small areas in the coastal southwest ofWestern Australia, the Pilbara, west coast SouthAustralia and a few areas in inland Queensland.

At the beginning of the month low pressure andsurface troughs dominated northern and easternAustralia. Bands of thunderstorms and showersformed across the Top End, with some heavier fallsrecorded in the western Top End in the NorthernTerritory. Moderate rainfall was recorded throughmuch of the Cape York Peninsula and across centraland southern Queensland as another surface troughextended across the far north of the NorthernTerritory and Queensland.

A tropical low developed near Whydham inland fromthe north Kimberley coast on the 2nd. Over thefollowing days, the broad and slow-moving lowtracked along the Kimberley coast beforecommencing an eastward track during the 8th andcrossing into the Northern Territory by the 10th.Heavy rainfall was recorded over the northwestKimberley in strong northwest winds and also in thevicinity of the low.

The passage of a weak cold front to the south of thecontinent on the evening of the 3rd brought lightrainfall to the southwest Tasmanian coast, areas ofsoutheastern South Australia and western Victoria. Asurface trough extended across the Northern Territoryand into northwest Queensland, producing moderaterainfall totals for the far north tropical coast andadjacent inland districts of Queensland. Moderaterainfall totals were recorded through parts of centralQueensland and northern New South Wales as thetrough passed through.

A low pressure system in central Australia linked withan upper level trough and a tropical air mass over theKimberley, producing a significant rainband thatextended from the northwest to the southeast ofAustralia. Moderate rainfall totals were recorded overnorthern, central and southeastern Australia betweenthe 9th and 13th as the rainband moved eastwards.

During the 10th a weak low pressure system near theCape York Peninsula associated with a monsoontrough triggered thunderstorms across the tropicalnorth, resulting in moderate to heavy rainfall acrossparts of far northern Queensland and the northtropical coast. Moderate rainfall was also recordedacross areas of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territoryand in Western Australia's Kimberley District.

Between the 12th and 14th, a surface troughextending from a low pressure system in the GreatAustralian Bight, through South Australia and centralVictoria, and into southern New South Walesproduced moderate rainfall totals over a large area ofsouthern, central and eastern Victoria, Tasmania, andacross large parts of New South Wales. Heavy rainfall

in southeastern Tasmania fell on the morning of the14th, associated with a deep low east of Tasmania, and resulted in storm damage and some flooding.

In the north, frequent showers and storms wererecorded across eastern and northern Queensland, the northern half of the northern Territory and acrossthe Kimberley in Western Australia. Some of thesestorms brought very heavy rain, with flash floodingreported in parts of north and northwest Queenslandon the 17th. Heavy rainfall was recorded over thenorth and west Kimberley and in the vicinity of thelow, causing some flash flooding in parts of theKimberley. On the 20th, a surface trough over theeastern mainland combined with onshore flow togenerate moderate rainfall along the coast in thenorthern half of New South Wales.

In the last part of the month, a slow-moving lowpressure system developed over southwesternQueensland in a surface trough lying through easternAustralia. An unstable air mass to the east of thetrough and onshore flow combined with the low andproduced thunderstorms and heavy showers ineastern-to-central Queensland and in northeasternNew South Wales. Extremely heavy rainfall wasrecorded in southeastern Queensland, with flashflooding in the Brisbane Metropolitan area and on thenorthern and central coast of New South Wales. Innorthern Australia, the trough combined with onshoreflow and brought thunderstorms and showers to theTop End, the northern interior of Western Australiaand the Cape York Peninsula.
