The Monthly Weather Review - Australia is produced by the Bureau of Meteorology to provide a concise but informativeoverview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in Australia for the month. To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Althoughevery effort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until completequality control procedures have been carried out. Any major discrepancies will be noted in later issues. We are keen to ensure that the Monthly Weather Review is appropriate to its readers' needs. Units of measurementExcept where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometresper hour (km/h).

Observation times and periodsEach station in Australia makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past24 hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the followingconventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of thatday.Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of thatday.Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may haveoccurred on the previous calendar day.Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Climatological valuesThe climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from the years1961–1990. They are not shown for sites with less than 25 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculatedreliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from all available years of record; the number of years can vary markedlyfrom site to site.

RecordsThe tables of records are not exhaustive, as they only show sites with at least 30 years of record. This may exclude locationswhere a new site has been established; this means even some major cities and towns may not be listed.

MapsThe temperature and rainfall maps are intended to give an overview of the country. There could be discrepancies between thevalues shown on these maps and those at individual locations, as a result of the way the maps are generated. A wide range ofmaps of rainfall, temperature and other variables, covering the whole country and smaller regions can be found atwww.bom.gov.au/climate/maps.

Accessing dataTables of daily values for selected sites are included toward the back of the Monthly Weather Review. Data from many moresites and for other times are available from www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/.

Synoptic summary

During the first seven days of February, a broadtrough of low pressure extended from southernWestern Australia, across the Northern Territorythrough to Queensland. In the south, a large highpressure system to the south of the Great AustralianBight moved slowly eastwards towards the TasmanSea. This system extended a ridge of high pressurealong the east coast of Australia. As this ridgestrengthened, the low pressure trough movednorthwards over Cape York Peninsula.

From the 8th to the 18th, several cold fronts movedacross the southern parts of Western Australia, SouthAustralia, Victoria and across Tasmania, most notablya strong front that passed over Tasmania and Victoriaon the 14th. The ridge of high pressure overQueensland weakened and was replaced with apersistent inland trough of low pressure from the12-18th. Tropical cyclone Kelvin, located off the WestKimberley coast of Western Australia, was named onthe 17th. Kelvin moved to the east crossing the coaston the 18th.

To the east of Australia tropical cyclone Gita waslocated to the southeast of New Caledonia on the15th and continued moving southwest into the CoralSea. On the 19th Gita moved over the Tasman Seaand weakened to a low pressure system movingsoutheast towards New Zealand. A ridge of highpressure extended along the east coast of Australiaon the 20th.

A broad trough associated with ex-tropical cycloneKelvin tracked over South Australia on 22nd and 23rd.On the 24th, a low pressure trough extended throughcentral Western Australia and the Northern Territorydown to a cold front clipping the south coast ofTasmania. On the 25th, the cold front was locatedover the Tasman Sea with an associated trough thatextended back across New South Wales. A broad lowpressure trough extended over much of Australia onthe 26th with a ridge of high pressure extendingacross southeast Australia into the central interior. Atthe end of the month, a broad low pressure troughextended across the northern half of Australia. Furthersouth a low pressure system with an associated coldfront passed through southern Victoria and Tasmania.

Anomalies of mean daily maximumtemperature in February 2018

Decile rank of mean daily maximumtemperature in February 2018

Maximum temperatures were above average acrossall the eastern mainland States, South Australia andthe south and east of the Northern Territory. Maxima

were in the warmest 10% of historical observations(decile 10) for February across central and westernQueensland and the southeast of the NorthernTerritory. For Queensland, the monthly meanmaximum temperature was just outside the top tenwarmest at +1.67 °C. Above average rainfall led tocooler than average mean monthly maxima for muchof Western Australia.

The month got off to a cool start. A ridge of highpressure extended along the east Australian coastdirecting a cool south to southeasterly air flow overNew South Wales and southeast Queensland. Cooldays saw some stations in north eastern New SouthWales set records for lowest February daily maximumtemperature on the 2nd, and in southeasternQueensland on the 2nd and 3rd.

Northerly winds ahead of a sequence of cold frontsbrought warm days to southeastern Australia from the7th, before the warmth moved into Queensland andthe Northern Territory. There were very warm daysacross the southern half of the Territory and much ofQueensland south of the Peninsula between the 11thand 20th.

A broad, stationary area of low pressure broughtwarm conditions over most of Queensland on the12th and 13th. Queensland had its hottest Februaryday on record on the 12th, with a statewide meanmaximum temperature of 40.46 °C. The 12th and13th was the first time in February when thestatewide mean maximum temperature exceeded40 °C for two consecutive days.

The cloud and thunderstorm activity associated withtropical cyclone Kelvin saw a few stations in thewestern Kimberley experience record cool Februarydaily maxima on the 16th.

Minimum temperatures

February was a warm month for area-averaged meanminimum temperatures. Queensland's meanminimum temperature was the tenth-warmest onrecord whilst the Northern Territory ranked the sixth-warmest and the highest since 1992. In contrast, themean minimum temperature for Western Australiawas below average.

Minimum temperatures were above average acrossthe Northern Territory, South Australia, the westernhalves of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria;the north of Tasmania; and the south of Western

Australia. Minima were cooler than average for anarea of Queensland's North Tropical Coast and inWestern Australia spanning the western Kimberleyand Northern Interior district.

In the west of the country, a tropical low at the startof the month resulted in Telfer in northern WesternAustralia having its coldest February temperature onrecord.

There were warm nights across eastern SouthAustralia and the western halves of New South Walesand Victoria from the 8th to the 10th. Minima morethan 8 °C above average were recorded for most ofthis area due to a trough directing a warm northerlywind flow. This area of heat moved northeastwardsover the country with the passage of the low pressuretrough. The heat from the record warm days inQueensland between the 12th and 14th persistedovernight with a few stations in Queensland settingrecords for warm nights on the 13th or 14th, includingBoulia Airport which had its warmest February night in124 years of record (see page 12).

Northerly winds on the 22nd and 23rd brought warmnights across eastern South Australia and the westernhalves of New South Wales and Victoria. Minimawere more than 8 °C above average for the area.

Further north around Cairns a few locations setrecords for coolest February night on the 12th,associated with cool onshore flow.

Rainfall

Nationally rainfall for Australia was below average forFebruary. Rainfall was above average for Tasmaniaand Western Australia, while the rest of the Statesand the Northern Territory reported below averagerainfall. Victoria was 62% below the mean area-averaged rainfall for February, the lowest since 2009.

Total rainfall in February 2018

Decile rank of total rainfall in February 2018

Rainfall for the month was below average for thewestern half of Queensland and much of the CapeYork Peninsula, large parts of the Northern Territory, the western two thirds of New South Wales, nearly allof Victoria, and parts of the east of South Australia.February rainfall was above average across most ofWestern Australia, western parts of South Australia, large parts of Tasmania, the eastern half of

Queensland, and an area of the Southern Tablelandsin New South Wales, including the northern half ofthe Australian Capital Territory.

Eastern Queensland observed a wet start to themonth, with some heavy falls in the North TropicalCoast during the first week.

During the middle of the month, tropicalcyclone Kelvin brought moderate to heavy rainfall overthe Top End in the Northern Territory before movingover Western Australia's Kimberley region, where daily rainfall records for February were set atsome stations. Broome Airport recorded its highestFebruary daily rainfall on the 17th, which significantlycontributed to it also recording its highest Februarytotal rainfall (see page 15).

Severe thunderstorms brought moderate to heavyrainfall in the Central Highlands and Coalfields districtof Queensland on the 20th. Injune Post Office on the21st received its highest February daily rainfall in 93years of record. Heavy rain and flash flooding wasreported in greater southeastern Queensland duringthe last week of the month. This was associated witha very moist air mass over eastern Queensland duringthe week, combined with a broad upper-leveldisturbance and surface trough. On the 24th twolocations in southeast Queensland had their highestFebruary daily rainfall on record.

A series of weak cold fronts crossed southeastAustralia from the early hours of the 24th, and incombination with a surface trough, producedmoderate falls over western and northern Tasmania, including a February daily rainfall record at DevonportAirport. Moderate to very heavy falls followed overparts of southeastern New South Wales and theAustralian Capital Territory on the 25th and into themorning of the 26th. Flash flooding resulted inCanberra.
