President’s Message By: Madison Schultz May 2020 Hello ASHRAEcok Family! I hope that you all are safe and well. It has been an honor to serve as your President this year. My goal for the year has been to Empower Members. I have been lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers helping this year, so this year has been jampacked with events; I have been so glad to see you at many of them. I have a big shout-out this month: I want to thank Kaylee Oliver. She added to her usual volunteer duties to set up the Diversity in ASHRAE Virtual Happy Hour last month. She also planned and set up an ASHRAEcok YEA Discord to facilitate our YEA Virtual Meet up in a video game. All of this planning is not in her typical duties, but she did it anyways. Neither of those events would have been the successes that they were without her efforts. Thank you, Kaylee! We had a delightful joint Diversity in ASHRAE/Membership Promotions Virtual Happy Hour last month. This was the inaugural Diversity in ASHRAE Event for the chapter. It was a successful beginning to the conversation; I can’t wait to see how the discussion progresses. I am pleased to announce that our Companions’ Night Event this year is an evening with Congresswoman Kendra Horn. The is the elected official to the US House of Representatives from Oklahoma’s Fifth Congressional District. If you live in Oklahoma County (outside of Midwest City/Del City), Seminole County, or Pottawattamie County, she is your Representative! Congresswoman Horn will be joining us on a video call on Monday, May 11 from 6-7pm to discuss energy policies on a federal level and field questions from us. Please invite your significant other to join the video chat! The link will be posted on our chapter website calendar. I hope to see you there. I am also excited to announce that we will be hosting a YEA/Student Mixer on Thursday, May 14 from 5-7pm. All YEA and Student Members should be receiving a calendar invitation with Zoom conference details. We will also be hosting a Student Research Update virtual conference on Wednesday, June 3 from 11:30-1pm. The students working on ASHRAE funded projects will be sharing updates on their research. I hope you all will be able to join us. More details will be provided on the chapter website calendar. Please reach out if you have an idea for a digital event or activity that will empower members. I am looking forward to our joint AIA/ASHRAE May Chapter Meeting on May 6. Like the April meeting, this will be a digital meeting hosted by GoToMeeting and will be free for all ASHRAEcok members. Details to join the meeting are on our website calendar. I am pleased to welcome our featured speaker Bill McQuade, Vice President of Sector Services and the Sector Lead for the Applied Products, who will be talking on the subject of The Future of the HVAC&R Industry, Trends, Risks, and Opportunities. Bill is also an ASHRAE Society Vice President. This meeting is also our Life Member and Past-Presidents Recognition Day. We hope all of our Life Members and Past- Presidents are able to join us for the meeting. On a personal note, I hope that you all are finding the strength needed to evolve during these difficult and uncertain times. I want to remind you to follow CDC and local guidelines and don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you need anything. Stay safe and wash your hands. Madison

Young Engineers Association (YEA) May Updates By: Gavin Swenson Thank you to the members that made it to our very first virtual event last month, and to Johnson Controls for sponsoring! It was great to hear everyone’s voices again.
Sticking with the responsible social distancing theme, this month we’re excited to announce a joint event with Student Activities.
Thursday, May 14th from 5pm to 7pm we’ll be doing a virtual mixer with student members through Zoom. Come pop into the chat
and catch up with fellow YEA members and local students alike!
If you need anything or have any ideas you’d like to see implemented in our YEA program, please contact me at [email protected]

Honors and Awards Roadmap to the Regional Award of Merit (RAM)
By: Tino Mendez We all like to be recognized for a job well done and at the Regional level in ASHRAE the first Award most Members are considered for is the Regional Award of Merit (RAM). You are awarded points for your involvement in the Chapter in accordance with the effort that each assignment requires. The following is a list of those points. President - 2 points President Elect or VP - 1 point Secretary - 1/2 point Treasurer - 1/2 point (Several years ago we had a person volunteer to do this job on a continuing basis since it requires an understanding of finance beyond normal limits.) This point is not available to you. So, if you go "trough the chairs", you can accumulate 5.5 points. Total required is 10. Where can you get the other 4.5 points ? One source is the CRC that comes around every 10 years or so to a Chapter. The General Chair of the CRC gets 2 points and the Program Chair gets 1 point. Most other Committee Chairs get 1/2 point with a Maximum of 2 points per CRC. Now you are up to maybe 6.5 points and still need 3.5 points to be eligible. The last source for points is Regional/Society activities, like: Director and Regional Chair - 2 points CRC Delegate - 1 point CRC Alternate - 1/2 point Nominating Committee Member -1 point Nominating Committee Alternate - 1/2 point Regional Vice Chair - 1 point (This is a 3 year assignment so you can get a total of 3 points.) For a complete list I refer you to the entry form for the RAM at ASHRAE.org under Membership/Honors and Awards. Hopefully this gives you a better understanding of the RAM Award. Get involved!!

Research Promotion Event Cancellations By: Chris Dolan I hope everyone is doing well through this Covid-19 situation. Unfortunately, this virus cost us the opportunity to host our annual sporting clays event. I will attempt to reschedule in early summer when things go back to normal.
To contact me, please email me at [email protected]
It is more critical than ever for each person in our chapter to donate to RP. Without your donations there will be research grants that could go unfilled.
I challenge every member to donate $100 at www.ashrae.org/donate

Student Activities: Virtual Mixer By: Robert Smith and Don Carter We have a scheduled virtual YEA/Student Mixer on Thursday, May 14, 2020 from 5-7pm. This event currently will be hosted by Zoom and it will allow our students to interact with the COK Chapter virtually. Wednesday, June 3, 2020 during our normal lunch meeting we have ASHRAEcok student research presentation updates scheduled. This event will be a virtual Zoom meeting where students from The University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University will present their research presentation to our Chapter body. With everything that is going on in the world right now meditation, and positive energy can help ease anxiety and depression. Please be safe during these times. Government Affairs Virus impact on efficiency
By: Byron Hughes The efficiency sector, which employs more than 2.4 million workers, has been deeply affected by the COVID-19 public health crisis. Since most people are self-isolating at home, there is little work available installing energy efficient technologies and implementing other efficiency measures. Even when the immediate health crisis recedes, there are concerns about construction slow-downs and reduced budgets for state and local governments. Also, because most state legislatures are no longer in session, many energy efficiency bills that were close to being enacted may be delayed until next session. If you are interested in getting involved in Government affairs please contact me at [email protected]. Diversity Stay Strong By: Aruna Abhayagoonawardhana
We all are in this together.” That is one important lesson we have learned over the past couple of weeks. Our goals are still the same even though the way we conduct our day to day business has changed. Covid-19, the vicious virus, spreads among our communities without any discrimination. It is essential to not let Covid-19 affect diversity which is now needed more than ever during these difficult times. Some of you are teleworking while some of you have to report to duty stations. Check on your family, co-workers, friends and community and do what is necessary to survive during this crisis. Keep diversity on your daily agenda for the sake of ASHRAE and our communities and businesses.

Affairs Chair
