The Correspondent Monthly Newsletter ~ August 2012 It’s hard to believe it’s almost August. Soon, school will start back up; high school and college football will kick in gear, and before we know it, another year will have passed. Personally, it’s also hard to believe that I’m already into the 3 rd month of my tenure as Chair. As I reflect on the goals that we have as a Chamber Board, and as I have personally as Chair, I can’t help but turn my focus to finances. Like a lot of individuals and small businesses, chambers across the country have struggled financially over the last few years. Small businesses, which are often the heart and soul of local chambers, have been some of the hardest hit. Those that have survived have often been forced to cut back on a variety of things. And while I’m a strong proponent of the value of chamber membership, funds for chamber memberships are often an easy expense to cut. As a result, the Chamber is not different than the rest of us, and the last few years have been difficult. As we have hopefully turned the corner on the worst of the economic downturn, one of my biggest goals is to get the Rowlett Chamber on firm financial footing for years to come. Our initial goal has been set to have six months of expenses in the bank. I think that the programs and initiatives that Diane Lemmons has put in place are well on their way to providing that foundation that we need financially. However, we are not looking to stop there. We have a goal of establishing a more significant “rainy day fund” or even setting up a sort of endowment like colleges have. While we are realistic that we can’t reach a billion dollar endowment like the Harvards and Stanfords of the world, we strongly believe that a $1 million fund is not unrealistic for a town of our size with the growth prospects that we believe we have. We also recognize that, because we lease space in downtown Rowlett, future development may cause us to look for a new home. We want to be proactive in preparing for these events. Without a doubt, our ambitious goal requires your help. I want to challenge each and every one of you to consider how you can assist the Chamber in this long-term goal. It may be that, as a small business, you are only able to give $50 or $100 towards the goal. However, there may also be businesses for which $10,000 or $25,000 would be the equivalent to a $50 or $100 contribution as a percentage of their budget. Please consider this over the next several months, as you will hear more in the very near future as we move aggressively to achieve this ambitious goal over the next several years. Membership in the Rowlett chamber has its many privileges, but I firmly believe that it carries with it obligations to assist when you can. Like many endeavors, what you get out of the Chamber is a direct result of what you put in. I encourage all of you to help in what way you can. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and I look forward to seeing each of you at our next luncheon as we look towards the new school year to come. Sincerely, Greg Mitchell, Chairman (972)463-8417 [email protected]

It’s hard to believe it’s almost August. Soon, school will start back up; high school and college football will kick in gear, and before we know it, another year will have passed. Personally, it’s also hard to believe that I’m already into the 3rd month of my tenure as Chair. As I reflect on the goals that we have as a Chamber Board, and as I have personally as Chair, I can’t help but turn my focus to finances. BUSINESS OF THE MONTH for JULY The Rowlett Chamber of Commerce was pleased to honor Walmart as Business of the Month for July 2012. Manager, LaGrante Birth accepted the plaque. Walmart serves customers and members in the ways they want to be served. Saving people money to help them live better was the goal that Sam Walton envisioned when he opened the doors to the first Walmart more than 40 years ago. Today, this mission is more important than ever to their customers and

members. Walmart works hard every day deliver on this promise. Walmart operates with the same level of integrity and respect that Mr. Sam put in place. It is because of these values and culture that Walmart continues to make a difference in the lives of their customers, members and associates. Remember with Walmart you “Save Money . Live Better.”
