THE RMS ANNUAL REPORT honors parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends who have helped to make the 2013-2014 school year a success. We are truly grateful for the generous outpouring of community support.

To better steward your gifts and reduce the impact on our environment, we have moved to an online format. This new format eliminates the production and mailing of nearly 60,000 printed pages and allows us to highlight our RMS community in much more detail.

The following report recognizes gifts received between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014.

The Annual Report is a publication by the Advancement Office of Richmond Montessori School.

LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOLSUSANNE GREGORY

Thanks for a Wonderful Year!

So many things to be thankful for within our stellar Montessori school.  Beautifully prepared classroom environments, our talented, dedicated teachers and our lively, engaged students create the essence of our Montessori mission.  All three elements are required to bring our mission to life.  Luckily, 2013-2014 brought all three elements into fine focus.

Our little patch on N. Parham is fully expanded and the doors and windows of our new classrooms are open wide to welcome the students who are fortunate to be part of our Upper Continuum.....our rising 4th through 8th graders.  It was our good fortune to dedicate the newly renovated Lynn C. Humphreys Performing Arts Center where our students will have many opportunities to shine and share their talents for years to come.

Your gifts to our Unfold the Future capital campaign and the Annual Fund for Montessori Excellence have directly supported the enhancement of our school and enabled the faculty and staff to focus on the most important members of our school community - the children.  Even as we navigated through a year of planned transition, we held steady in our quest to deliver the very finest Montessori experience for our students and families.

Thank you for your generosity and all you’ve done to make Richmond Montessori School a wonderful, nurturing community.

Fondly,

Susanne

LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR

ROB DAVENPORT

What an exciting time to be involved with one of the premier Montessori schools in the country – Richmond Montessori School. Our students continue to shine thanks to our dedicated teachers and staff.

The 2013-14 school year was a year of change at RMS. We changed our campus by completing our expansion efforts on the North Campus and moving our toddler classroom to the main academic building on the South Campus. There have been changes to support staff, teach-ers, and Head of School. Our new Head of School, Greg Wojcikewych, is excited about leading our school into the future.

The future will hold changes too for our school community. We have one of the largest incoming 7th grade classes in the history of our Middle School. Our Middle School program continues to prepare our students for high school and beyond and I encourage all parents to take the time to visit our Middle School to see for yourself the many opportunities your child will have once they enter their 7th grade year at RMS. The North Campus will continue to change. Our desire to have a Middle School gymnasium is still a focus but we continue to need the philanthropic generosity of our parents, grandparents, and friends of the school to make this a reality. Please continue to support the Fund for Montessori Excellence (FME) along with any future capital campaigns to enable us to continue to improve our campus and academic offerings.

At the end of the 2013-14 academic year, I concluded my 3rd and final term as the Chairman of the RMS Board of Trustees. I am very proud of our school’s accomplishments during the past 3 years: AMS and VAIS re-accreditation, successful completion of our capital campaign, and the hiring of our new Head of School. Shannon Sinclair will be the new Chair for the 2014-15 academic year and I am confident she will do an outstanding job of leading the Board. The 2013-14 academic year also marked the completion of my 12th year as a RMS Trustee. I will complete my final year as a Trustee during the 2014-15 school year and I am just as excited about our school today as I was twelve years ago. Although changes always occur, our school remains strong and will always be one of the best academic institutions in the Richmond community.

The next phase of the journey has begun…it is an exciting time to be involved with Richmond Montessori School!

FINANCIAL OVERVIEWThe Board of Trustees is pleased to report a strong financial picture of Richmond Montessori School for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014. The school’s independent auditors, Elliott Davis, LLC, gave an unqualified audit opinion, indicating that Richmond Montessori School adheres to sound fiscal policies and strict U.S. accounting standards.

The Board and administration are committed to fiscally responsible plan-ning. The school’s operations are funded entirely by tuition and school fees. Additional funds are raised each year to provide innovative programming and resources to enhance the fundamental Montessori education and experience for our students.

LETTER FROM THERMPA PRESIDENTCASEY STAPLETON

Thank you to everyone that helped make this past year a success.

We had a host of events that once again connected families. Paige Torasson and Jenn Walker made sure we had plenty of family fun at Harvestfest.  Joy Buckner led the newly formed social committee that oversaw a movie night in the fall, a new bingo night in the spring, as well as the second annual dance.  Christine Lowry, Stephanie Gatewood and Angie Dickens planned the year-end picnic, which continued on despite uncoop-erative weather.

The Hospitality Committee, headed by Erin Campbell, helped to show our appreciation of teachers and staff with conference day lunches, post-holiday gifts, and Teacher Appreciation Week.

RMPA Fundraising had another great year thanks to RMS parents and students. It was strongly supported by Pizza Friday, which continued under Sarah Dan’s direction. Britta Petersson led our fall book fair where we once again partnered with the bookstore, bbgb. Gretchen Hall found a new photographer, Freed Spirit, who took great outdoor school pictures of our children. Jessica Czjakowski continued her management of the Box Tops program.

Through it all, RMPA had the constant support of a great group of leaders: Vice President, Paige Toraason; Treasurer, Jenn Walker; and Secretary, Chris Campbell.

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make 2013-2014 a great year for the RMPA.

SAMANTHA GROSSMAN“I like to think of life as a journey – a journey of learning. And because of Montessori, I love, and will always love, that journey – of accomplishing and understanding difficult concepts, theories, and ideas. And also, learning how to handle it.”

At RMS, I have found myself. This school hasn’t just given me the experiences to find myself; it has given me opportunities and the

skills to help out others…”

JARED ORR“It’s hard to leave a place you know so well, one that has helped to shape who you are today….But I know wherever we go, we’ll always remember each other and our lives here at RMS.”

KAAVYA SHETTY“At RMS, I have been recognized as an individual…I have been able to overcome my weaknesses, and display my strengths.

DEDICATION OF THE LYNN C. HUMPHREYS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

In May of 2014, RMS dedicated the Lynn C. Humphreys Performing Arts Center at 501 N. Parham Road. Named after a local graphic artist and theater supporter, the renovations to the performing arts center were made possible in part by a donation from her husband, Ben Humphreys, Sr. as well as their son, Ben Humphreys, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Amy. Ben Humphreys, Sr.’s gift of $100,000 is the largest single donor gift in the school’s history. A portion of the gift was also allocated to the construction of the new Upper Elementary and Science Building and established the school’s first Capital Facility Endowment.

STEP TWO OF THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

The gym will include: bleacher seating for 200 people a catering kitchen boys and girls locker rooms; and an Athletic Director’s office.

The Board of Trustees is planning for the future. Thank you to the following who have already made a commitment to this next exciting chapter in RMS history.
