Monterey Bay GolfThe Monterey Bay is a spectacular backdrop
to some of the most famous links in the world. Whether you prefer to play in the mountains, coastal valleys, or near the ocean, there is no shortage of stunning scenery in a county that offers golf courses for players of every skill level.
Play among the towering redwoods at Boulder Creek Country Club in the Santa Cruz Mountains, shoot a quick 9 holes at the casual Valley Gardens in Scotts Valley, or challenge yourself in the wooded terrain of De Laveaga in Santa Cruz (which also features a two-tiered driving range for all weather conditions). Nestled in the foothills of Santa Cruz, Pasatiempo Golf Club combines breathtaking views and a truly demanding championship course that continues to challenge even the Pro’s since 1929.
Head toward the coast to hear the ocean from the historic Seascape Golf Course in Aptos, or continue south on Highway 1 to find gentle undulating greens and views of rich agricultural land at Pajaro Valley Golf Club or Spring Hills Golf Course in the Watsonville area.

Excursion Ideas
1. A short drive through the mountains brings you to the town of Corralitos. A warmer climate than that of the coastal cities will greet you with breathtaking views of rolling hills. Corralitos is a popular cycling destination, and home to a local favorite, Corralitos Market. Hike through Mount Madonna County Park, or have a one of a kind experience by visiting the Glaum Egg Ranch.
2. Learn about the History of Agriculture of the Central Coast. The Agricultural History Project in Watsonville can educate you on the fertile farmlands that line the Monterey Bay. For a hands-on experience, pick your own berries at Gizdich Ranch. Check out www.ci.watsonville.ca.us/information for links to dining and events.
Corralitos - Watsonville
1. Skate park, dog park, and regular park all rolled into one! Skypark in Scotts Valley has something for everyone in your family. Grab a burger from Bruno’s BBQ and head on over for a day in the park.
2. Visit Canepa Designs Auto Shop! Check out the exotic custom vehicles and vintage racers, then grab an iced latte from Surf City.
1. Enjoy an afternoon stroll along the esplanade or a walk on Seacliff State Beach. Grab a picnic from The Palm Deli on your way to the beach or stop in for casual lunch at Pixie’s. Make sure to bring your camera to remember the views of a historical wonder, the SS Palo Alto cement ship. The visitor center at Seacliff State Beach is
a great place to learn about the area’s natural wonders.
2. Drive or hike through the young redwood Forest of Nisene Marks. This prior saw mill is also home to the 1989 earthquake epicenter, and has many great hiking trails and picnic areas. After working up an appetite, stop in for a sandwich at Erik’s Deli Café, and a scoop of ice cream at Baskin Robbins.
3. Enjoy the small treasures of our antique stores and boutiques. Village Fair Antiques (open Thurs-Sun) is a great place to find hidden treasures, and old heirlooms at great values. If boutiques are
more to your taste, try Outside-In for amazing home décor, pick up a darling frame at Mulberry Gallery, and don’t forget a new pair of shoes from Bunny’s!
Aptos
1. Taste the fabulous Santa Cruz Mountains wines. A mini-tasting adventure waits for you up Main Street with three amazing wineries, Bargetto, Soquel, and Hunter Hill. Finish off the wine tasting with a delicious lunch on the patio at Michael’s on Main, and stop in at a few antique shops.

1. Stroll along the streets of the quaint Capitola Village. Grab your morning coffee from Mr. Toot’s and watch the waves crash from a bench overlooking the ocean. An amazing place for shopping, Capitola Village is the residence of numerous small shops and boutiques. When lunchtime comes around, visit Zelda’s and enjoy your meal on the patio which has an amazing view of the beach. When you are ready to wind down your day, stop into Shadowbrook for a tour of the beautiful grounds and stay for a delicious dinner and night cap.
Capitola
1. Rent a bicycle and cruise along West Cliff Drive. These picturesque cliffs offer a peaceful ride and West Cliff is also the perfect place for a stroll. The surfing museum at the lighthouse is a great place to stop in and take a break from the sun. The aquarium at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center is a must see and a great place to

take the family. Learn all about marine life in the Monterey Bay Sanctuary.
2. Visit the many boutiques and bookstores along Pacific Avenue. The Pacific Garden Mall is the main shopping district in Santa
Cruz. Between the shops take in a movie or browse the Museum of Art and History. Coffee houses and night life are also abundant in our downtown region.
3. Tour the campus at University of California Santa Cruz. Bring your camera to capture the beauty of horticulture in the Arboretum, peruse the enormous library, or visit Pogonip Park next door, home of the famous Lost Boys house.
4. Santa Cruz Mountains wines have garnered many awards and praise from all around the world. Visit the Surf City Vintners off of Mission Street (Hwy 1) at Swift
Street and Ingalls. You can enjoy some first-rate wine tasting from ten local wineries.
5. Spend a day at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. You won’t run out of things to do at this admission free park. Take in the sun and build sand castles on the beach or ride the roller coasters. Bowling, miniature golf, and laser tag are great indoor activities if the sun gets to be too much. When you are ready for a meal, the Municipal Wharf has a great selection of seafood restaurants.

1. Take a hike along the trails of Fall Creek State Park in Felton. After, treat yourself to a lovely dinner at the rustic Scopazzi’s Restaurant in Boulder Creek. Visit the haunted Brookdale lodge for a ghostly encounter or live local music.
2. For a German experience, visit the Tyrolean Inn, a Bavarian style restaurant which has an annual Oktoberfest celebration.
Highway 9 - Felton To Boulder Creek
1. Cruise along the scenic Hwy 1 as you leave Santa Cruz. You can stop at the visitor’s center at Natural Bridges State Beach, or continue north toward Davenport. Stop and dine at the Roadhouse at the Cash Store and watch kite surfers perform their amazing stunts on the waves below. A little further north is Año Nuevo State Beach, home to Elephant Seals. Docents will lead you around the sandy dunes and teach you about these incredible creatures. If you are lucky, you may even witness the birth of a pup!
Heading North
Heading South To Monterey
1. Sights and activities are numerous on the way down south to Monterey. The City of Watsonville is located in the heart of an agricultural area. It features an old fashioned “Main Street” with historical charm. The city has recently added miles of walking trails through the sloughs that are that are perfect for birding and taking in the beautiful scenery. Several festivals take place in Watsonville throughout the year such as Cinco de Mayo, a Strawberry Festival, a birding festival, and the ever popular Santa Cruz County Fair.
2. Continuing south is the Elkhorn Slough, an ecological treasure at the center of the Monterey Bay, stretching from Watsonville to Moss Landing. This special habitat is home to more than 340 species of birds. It is a fabulous place to take a kayak out for a paddle, which can be rented from Kayak Connection. Go solo or have a well-trained guide point out the array of wildlife including harbor seals, otters, and sea lions. The visitor center has award winning exhibits that teach guests about the research and conservation efforts that are currently taking place. Five miles of hiking trails
wind through beautiful creeks and freshwater marshes. Hunting is available in designated parts of Elkhorn Slough during waterfowl season and fishing is also available. Contact the Monterey Office of the California Department of Fish and Game or a local bait shop for permits and locations.
3. Situated on the harbor side of Hwy 1 is the delightful fishing
village of Moss Landing that is full of hidden surprises. The smoke stacks of the power plaint are a well known landmark that can be seen from Santa Cruz on a clear day. Enjoy a fabulous fresh seafood
1. Just 25 miles east of Monterey Bay, the quaint town of San Juan Bautista is waiting to welcome you! Incorporated in 1869, this lovely community is home to many specialty shops where one can find gems, antiques, and many one-of-a-kind treasures. Take a historic walking tour of the downtown area and visit the Old Mission San Juan Bautista, the 15th of
21 California Missions. Built in 1797, the Mission offers beautiful gardens and a gift shop.
2. San Juan Bautista is home to several charming events you won’t find anywhere else, such as the “Rootin’ Tootin’ Boot Scootin’ Wild West and Arts Festival” in April. In June, visit the New Global Family Festival, and the New Harvest and Holiday Festival is a must in October. Monterey to Carmel:
1. Tour the marine wonders of Monterey Bay at the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Cannery Row. Seahorses, jelly fish, penguins and more are residents of this world famous aquarium. You can even pet sting rays and star fish in the touch pools. If you are lucky, you may be there at the right time to see a Great White Shark! Afterwards, tour cannery row and check out a movie at the IMAX Theater.
2. Drive the beautiful 17-Mile Drive through Monterey and Pacific Grove. Stop by the world famous Pebble Beach Golf Course where all the pro-golfers play. Head over to Carmel-By-The-Sea afterwards for lunch in this dog-friendly town. Peruse the stores on your way down to the ocean.
meal from Phil’s Fish Market accompanied by a glass of local wine from one of the more than 70 Santa Cruz Mountain Wineries. Explore the shops for antiques and fine art. Moss Landing also hosts a Bluegrass Festival in April and an Antique Fair and Yacht Race in July. If research is your passion, book a tour (in advance) with the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. The facility serves seven California State universities in northern California.
4. Castroville is famous for being dubbed “The Artichoke Capital.” The small town celebrates each May with a festival in honor of the vegetable that includes a parade and a classic car show. They also host an RV Jamboree that accommodates up to 200 RV’s.
5. A few miles north of Monterey is Marina State Beach. The beach area has a boardwalk that winds along the extraordinarily beautiful Marina Dunes Natural Preserve. Watch the hang-gliders soar above the dunes. There are plenty of fishing and hiking areas and places to picnic. Campgrounds are available.
3. Ride a steam train through the Santa Cruz Mountains. Roaring Camp has daily train rides through the mountains, and also offers weekend rides to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Located at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, it’s also a great place to hike. Plan on spending the day and take a picnic to eat at the Covered Bridge Park.

D o you love good wine? The Santa Cruz Mountains Appellation is nestled in one of the most unique natural environments in the world. Varied microclimates create ideal conditions for the three main varietals of the region. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir flourish in the cooler climates aided by the area’s coastal fog, and Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in the hotter inland areas of the region. There are over 70
boutique, family-owned wineries between Half Moon Bay and Watsonville, but there is nothing small about the flavor and character of these wines. You will be rewarded with friendly and knowledgeable winery staff to help you taste these wonderful wines, and often you will be talking to the winemakers themselves; an intimate experience.
The Santa Cruz Mountain Winegrowers Association has many programs to help you experience local wines. For wineries without tasting rooms, there is a Passport Program which gets you into theses wineries four times a year, once each season. A major benefit auction is held in May and the Vintners’ Festival is held the first two weekends in June, so you can easily buy and taste hard-to-find wines.
