A Five Wishes document is the first living will that talks about your personal, emotional and spiritual needs as well as your medical wishes. It lets you choose the person you want to make health care decisions for you if you are not able to

make them for yourself. Five Wishes lets you say exactly how you wish to be treated if you get seriously ill. It was written

with the help of The American Bar Association’s Commission of Law and Aging, and the nation’s leading experts in

end-of-life care. It’s also easy to use.

For more information, please call the Lompoc Recreation Division at (805) 875-8100 or register at 125 West Walnut Avenue. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.cityoflompoc.com

REMEMBRANCES

The crowd in Times Square is counting the seconds until the Tiffany ball drops. They will cheer, hug, kiss, wish all a Happy New Year. AT home I will celebrate with a glass of champagne, and sing “Auld Lang Sine”, while remembering those not with me physically, but not forgotten.

The song we credit to Robert Burns may not have been written by him. According to “Mental Floss” its origins are confusing, but Burns is the one credited with writing down what may have been an old folk poem. “Mental Floss” also credits Guy Lombardo with first playing the song on New Year’s Eve at New York City’s Roosevelt Hotel, just after midnight.

Regardless of origins, or when first played, it always brings tears to my eyes, as I remember the many who are not here this year to celebrate with me. School friends from grammar school days, the first day at a new high school with my best friend, and on, and on, the list could go.

At Christmas, the table is surrounded with family and friends, the turkey in all its glory dominating the center. Glasses in hand, we wait while my aunt opens the bottle of sparkling burgundy wine. Oops-she was a tad too enthusiastic and the wine leaves the bottle in a graceful arc, basting turkey and all in red wine. Actually, turkey basted in sparkling burgundy is quite good, we decide.

A caravan of families travel to the Indiana State dunes for a summer picnic. In those days a flat tire was inevitable, and all stopped and chatted, while the men gathered and made the necessary repairs. There was one time when my parents temporarily lost the car among the dunes which all had a remarkable similarity.

A favorite memory is New Year’s Eve celebrations during the depression. My dad would be asleep on couch, hands clasped on his chest, gently snoring. Mom and I would be off to the movies, a double feature usually with some give a way, encyclopedia volumes, dishes, etc.. It was a very special night because after the movie we splurged on hamburgers plus French fries.

The ball has descended in Times Square; we have seen Father Time limp away; and the baby New Year enter. My glass is empty, but I am filled with the warmth of family and friends, long remembered.

Even if you are caring for a senior love one, you may be surprised that 1 in 6 people in Lompoc are regularly helping a senior spouse, parent or friend (many for more than 60 hours a week), yet many do not see themselves as caregivers. The Caring Together Lompoc campaign aims to increase awareness, provide tools for caregivers to better understand the impact of caregiving on their lives, and point them to supportive resources already available in the community.

Could you be a caregiver? Consider these questions:

Am I a Caregiver? You are, if you…

__ Assist a senior with household tasks, or drive them to errands or appointments.

__ Help a senior with personal care like bathing, meals, dressing or grooming.

__ Have less time for yourself because you are caring for a senior.

You are not alone!

88% of family caregivers in Lompoc provide assistance with cooking, shopping, laundry or chores for a senior parent or spouse

84% of family caregivers in Lompoc provide transportation for a senior parent or spouse 59% of family caregivers in Lompoc manage finances for a senior parent or spouse

Visit www.CaringTogetherLompoc.org to take a caregiver stress quiz, create your own “Care Map”, find free local support services, or sign up for helpful weekly tips by email.

Caring Together Lompoc is a collaboration of local agencies and nonprofits serving family caregivers.
