In 1978, Planetary Citizen of the Year Award winner anthropologist, Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Her powerful statement succinctly describes the creation of the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District fifty years ago.

In March of 1970, the Sierra Club hosted a forum on the peninsula’s critical water supply spurring the idea of creating a special district for parks and open space. Within a year, the Committee for Open Space was formed by a coalition composed of the Sierra Club, the League of Women Voters, and the Audubon Society.

In May 1971, a grassroots effort began to collect signatures to place consideration of a park and open space district on the November ballot. Measure A was included on the November 1971 ballot.

The measure successfully passed creating the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District. The agency was, and continues to be, entrusted to acquire lands for the express purpose of preserving open space and providing recreational opportunities within the district boundaries (please see map page 14). For five successive decades since, the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District has continued to build on that vision, successfully protecting approximately 14,000-acres of diverse and scenic open space and has acquired or helped to acquire a total of 24-parks and open spaces. The most recent acquisitions include the Joyce Stevens Monterey Pine Preserve, expansion of the Frog Pond Wetland Preserve, and the Rancho Cañada Unit of Palo Corona Regional Park.

Yes, a small yet wonderfully visionary group of citizens helped create our beloved Park District. Thanks to their effort, many of the Central Coast’s magnificent natural open spaces are protected in perpetuity and available for the public’s enjoyment. From all who enjoy our trails and seeing a diversity of wildlife, participate in education-based programs, help us restore the Central Coast’s natural habitats and important cultural sites, and help us protect our region’s beautiful natural landscapes, we extend our sincere thanks to you, our residents and visitors, who have supported us for 50 years.

Enjoy Your Monterey Peninsula Regional Parks!

ParkIT! was created in 2018 by Ernest Chung, a former State Parks Commission member, and other community leaders. The Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District has been involved from the start. Other key organizations participating are Big Sur Land Trust, Point Lobos Foundation, Big Sur International Marathon Foundation, and California State Parks. Each has contributed funding and representation on the ParkIT! Steering Committee. Dr. Rafael Payan, MPRPD General Manager, and board members Kathleen Lee and Monta Potter serve on the Steering Committee.

WhatwillParkIT!do:• Create IMPROVED parking options. In preparation for

the elimination of parking along Highway 1 at congested locations, develop distributed parking at Marathon Flats (Highway 1 and Rio Road) near the Crossroads Shopping Center and at Palo Corona Regional Park’s Rancho Cañada Unit, for visitors to easily access shuttles.

• Create GREENER, accessible solutions for transportation by developing a shuttle service between distributed parking locations and key destinations. The shuttle stops will be at Marathon Flats, Palo Corona Regional Park Rancho Cañada Unit, and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve with hopes to expand services southward. The 24-passenger electric buses will run during summer, weekends, and holidays.

• Create EASIER PARKLANDS ACCESS. Visitation will be distributed, informing the public through targeted outreach and a day-use reservation system at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. This will help to reduce overcrowding and degradation of the Reserve’s natural resources.

ParkIT!’s strategy is to improve public experience while protecting natural resources. Those interested in learning more or contributing to ParkIT! can visit parkitforparks.com.
