Welcome to theMONTANA RECRUITER, a wrestling magazine brought to youby Eric Hinebauch, Nick Budeski, and Joe Casey. Tis magazine represents morethan just a Sugarbeeter, a Rustler, and a Copperhead. It expresses the vision othree college teammates, striving to improve the sport o wrestling in Montana.

Eric Hinebauch ended his high school career in 2004 with his hand raised. Hewas a 189-pound state champion rom Chinook. Te Sugarbeeter, and three-time state placer, practically pinned his way through high school. Eric then took

his wrestling skills to college. He was the rst wrestler ever to sign his letter ointent with the University o Great Falls.

Nick Bueski is a wrestling icon in Montana. wo time state champion, ourtime nalist, he graduated high school rom CMR in 2001. Te ollowing year heound himsel in Idaho representing a talented Boise State program. Four yearslater he transerred north back to Montana. Tere truly is no place like home, and there was truly nothing better to witness than when Nick disgarded theBoise blue to throw on the yellow singlet and bring his athletic ability back to theElectric City. Te All-American has been a major asset to the success o UGFsprogram, as a wrestler and a coach. Nick served as Caleb Shaeers assistant orthree seasons.

Joe Case, grew up under a slag pile and giant smoke stack. It took ourteenyears to realize that he would not be running the point and draining threes inthe Snake Pit. He has Ryan Pesanti to thank or that. Ryan recruited him inmiddle school and coached him throughout his high school career. Te ButteHigh graduate exposed Joe to the sport o wrestling allowing him to be able tocall Eric and Nick colleagues. Eric, Nick, and Joe wore that signature yellowsinglet as teammates, and competed in the 2007 NAIA National ournament.

From one journey to the next, our goals remain the same. Eric, currently aninsurance salesman in Great Falls, is also an assistant wrestling coach at CMRunder Aaron Jensen. Nick, married or our years, is a proud new papa, anEnglish teacher in Fort Benton, and assistant or the Longhorns. Joe is a Pioneer, working as a guidance counselor in Big Sandy, and will be buried in the corner oa wrestling mat this season as assistant wrestling coach. Our ambition, however, reaches urther then yelling out matside technique, it has led us to becomewriters, editors, and photographers. ake advantage o our magazine, help us

The ChallengeOne thing that separates goo teamsfrom bad ones is consistenc. TheUniversit o Great Falls Wrestling teamis without a oubt one o the mostunrelenting programs in the NAIA. TheArgonauts have alwas rostere a line-up full of balance and depth.

Since the teams conception in 2004, UGFhas nished outside the top ten at nationalsonly once, 12th place in 2009. Now, eightyears in, the team boasts nearly two dozenAll-Americans, a pair o regional titles, and a 2010 trophy representing a thirdplace nish at nationals. Not bad or ateam still in its adolescence. UGF has alsomade it to the National Dual nals twice, once last season and also in 2008.

Perhaps the three most exceptionalathletes supporting Argonaut success areMike Kummer, Anthony Varnell, and RossMosher. Kummer is the only our timeAll-American wrestler at the Universityo Great Falls. I all goes well this season,

Havre native Myles Mazurkiewicz willsoon ollow, but as o now, Kummer standsalone. He is also UGFs rst nationalchampion, earning the title at 184 poundsin 2008. Varnell, a junior college transerrom Nothwest College in Wyoming, wrestled only two seasons or the Argosin 2011 and 2012. He rattled o sixty-three wins and back-to-back nationaltitles, at 141 pounds. Mosher, a threetime All-American rom Augusta, wonhis national title at 165 pounds in 2011.Tese stats and records represent a team

ull o dependability and success. Being

dependable is impressive, but in this caseit is coupled with an expectation to ulllgreatness. eam greatness.

In orer to measure up to elite statusin the wrestling worl, a national titlerepresents superiorit. MSU-Northernhas efnitel seen its air share oprosperit regarding team success.Since 2000, the Lights have broughthome our team trophies; two owhich, 2000 an 2004, Northern wonthe National Tournament.

Go back another decade and you canadd seven more top three nishes; ouro which, 91, 92, 98, and 99 the Lightsreigned supreme. As o late, a lack oconsistency due tocoaching changes anddwindling recruitingclasses have held backthe Lights rom theirtrue potential.

    Dan roupe took over

as Northerns headcoach in the summero 2005, consequentlyconrming the endo David Rays reignin Havre. o say thatroupe, the FlatheadNative and two timeIowa State All-Americanhad big shoes to ll,would be a massiveunderstatement. In

twelve years, 1993-2005, Ray produced 85

All-Americans, 21 individual champions, and 4 team championships. Trow in aDan Hodge rophy winner and you gotyoursel a pretty solid resume.

Te rst and only time a NCAA DivisionI wrestler did not receive this award wasin 2004. Tat years recipient was a smalltown Montana boy rom Shepherd, EmmWillson, and yes, David Ray was in hiscorner every step o the way. Willsonsachievement marked the absolute pinnaclo a NAIA perennial powerhouse. Te

incrediblethey won a NAIA nationaltitle with eight All-Americans; six werenalists, and ve were champions. Teindividual titleholders tied a 46-year-oldrecord. Five champs, one team, all inthat single 04 season. Teir list o talentincluded current UGF head coach CalebSchaeer, Anthony Haukenberry, StryderDavis, Havre Plue Pony Kyle Fisher, andOutstanding Wrestler o the tournament,Emmett Willson; their combined win-lossrecord that year, 209-29. o add somesweetness, it all happened under the BigSky with Great Falls hosting the 2004NAIA National Wrestling ournament.

Can it really get much better than this?Hold that thought and lets consider aew major changes. Te ollowing season,2004-2005, marked a peculiar year orsuch a powerul Northern program. TeLights retained only two o their seniornational champions. Tree o them, CalebSchaeer, Kyle Fisher, and Emmett Willsonmoved onone in particular, Schaeer, moved south 111 miles to take an assistantcoaching job at UGF, setting himsel up orthe head gig three years later. Back to ourpeculiar 2004-05 season; UGFs inauguralteam was born and by the time all was

said and done at nationals, the returningnational champions, Northern, nishedthe season with the same amount o All-Americans as a rookie team ull o truereshmen and college transers, ve a piece.UGF solidied themselves as an in-staterival, David Ray lef, roupe began histhree year tour, and reality set in or MSU-Northern wrestling. Te Lights did notseem to shine as bright, especially whileCaleb and the Argonauts searched or thatGolden Fleece.

In order to brighten things up, MSU-Northern made a change. Four timeNorthern All-American yson Tiviergestepped up in 2008. He spent his college-wrestling career under David Ray cappingit o with a national title at 184 poundsin 2002. Tat same season he was alsocrowned as the NAIAs Most OutstandingWrestler. Te transition to head coach ohis alma mater can be judged as so ar sogood. Tivierge has already coached nineAll-Americans. Last season, he had themost highly decorated NAIA wrestler inthe country, Evan Hinebauch, on his team.A standout athlete while at Havre High,Hinebauch wrestled our years underTivierge placing at Nationals each year.

No other wrestler in the country held thastatus last season. Hinebauch won the184-pound weight class in 2011 under thenew head coach.

yson is now going on his fh season. He has settled in with his own recruits, built up a deeper roster, and capitalized osolid assistant coaches. Hellgate wrestlerAustin Oulette, an alum and 2009 All-American, coaches with him, along withthe newest addition to the mix, ormerNorthern All-American and Poplar star,Dustyn Azure. All o the sudden thereis some equilibrium up north, i there issuch a thing in Havre. Te Lights now hava team with a solid oundation, depth, experience, and talent. Te bottom lineis, yson Tivierge gives the Northernaithul hope or another national title.

    With regars to Schaeer an

his quest to hang a banner in the

McLaughlin Center, one simple actis for certain. If ou want to be the

best in the countr, ou have to be

the best in the state. Every single dayhe competes against Tivierge and theLights in every aspect o the sport, wheththrough recruiting and raising money,

Schlosser, the Conrad Cowboy, is goingto shoot or 125. Remember, teams candouble up on some weight classes at theNAIA National ournamenttwelvetotal slots, ten weight classes. Luttrelland Schlosser both at 125 pounds, its

as intriguing as it is lucrative. Anothermajor piece to the line up is 165-poundKalispell native Shawn Lau. Te talentedsophomore has a great opportunity toplace this season come March.

Perhaps the best wrestler the Universityo Great Falls had this year is out or theseason. 197-pound wrestler Kameron

Jackson broke his ankle during practicein October. Te returning All-Americanplaced ourth last season. Te loss o pointsat nationals is tough to swallow or UGFans, but whether it is Leonard, Zeiger, ora dark horse like Lau, somebody besides

Maz (Myles Mazurkiewicz) must have theability to sneak into the national nalsand, that somebody may be 149 pounderMike Vassar. His talent rivals anyone elsesin the country. Te Caliornian not onlyhas a chance to reach the national nals,he could possibly win the tournament.Another up and comer or the Argos isormer Lewistown star, Ryan Martin. He is

just a sophomore andalso has the abilityto go the rounds

with anybody inthe country. Plus, itdoesnt hurt i yourpractice partner isa three time All-American, bothMartin and Maz topo UGFs 141 poundweight class.

Myles Mazurkiewiczis the ace o the 2012-2013 Argonaut team.

His presence on themat is powerul andaggressive. Te seniorcan cap o a greatcareer by placing yetagain at nationals.Te question is whichplace? He surged ontothe scene as a rookie133 pound nalist, placing 2nd as a truereshmen, 5th as asophomore, and 6th

as a junior. His experience along with theintensity he brings on the mat could prophim back to the nals, and hopeully to thtop o the podium.

    The Lights

Northern returns two All-Americans romlast season and one rom 2011. And yes,one o them is a Hinebauch. Ethan is thethird piece o the puzzle regarding theHinebauch amily-wrestling tree. Eric, theoldest, separated himsel by signing hisletter o intent with UGF back in 2004. Sincthen, Evan, Ethan, and college newcomerEli have all committed to MSU-Northern.Each brother won a Montana state title.Tree have wrestled at the NAIA NationalWrestling ournament. wo are All-Americans, and one won the chipper. Telast name alone is a target or competitors.Add Ethan at the top o the rankings list, and a bulls-eye might as well be tattooedon his back. Te 165 pounder is the onlywrestler rom either team, UGF or Northerto receive a number one preseason ranking

Northern is also lead by junior 174-poundgrappler, Max Payne. Payne came awayrom Des Moines, Iowa last year with anAll-American medal. He placed eighth.Paynes work ethic is impressive, as well ashis strength. It is essential or the Lights tohave solid leadership this season and Paynehas the ability to deliver such condence.Cameron Neiss nds himsel with anotheropportunity to get back on the podium. Heplaced seventh in 2011 at 133 pounds. Telanky junior rom Ronan will hopeully gedown to 133 pounds this season. MickeyChe, another Ronan Chie in the lineup, is an exceptionally talented red shirtsophomore. Te 157 pounder was close tolanding on the podium last season, but ell round short.

An element with which all college

teams eal but are never ull

    prepared is injuries.

Hunter Azure is an elite gure regardingMontana high school athletics. He was therst Native American to win our Montanastate wrestling titles. Te only thing thatholds him back rom being an elite collegewrestler is injury. wo years ago he blew

out his knee. Last year he suered anotherseason ending ligament tear in the oppositeknee. But, as o now, Azure is healthy. Ihe stays that way, the 141 pounder willhave a solid shot at going to Des Moines, and competing as a rst time nationalqualier. Te athlete that will take controlo the 184-pound slot or the Lights isMissoula native Kody Reed. He steps intoEvan Hinebauchs old shoes. Te ormernational qualier is a very well roundedwrestler who has two seasons lef with theLights. He was extremely close to being an

All-American last season, one round away.An interesting actor within Northernslineup is that they dont have any seniors, none. Te team is ull o youth, especiallyup top. A notable true reshmen thatmay nd himsel as the teams closer isheavyweight ucker Erickson. Ericksonis rom Helena and he has a shot atsolidiying the varsity spot. But he will

battle it out it with another reshmen giant,Oregonian, ravis Williams. Both willend up pushing each other in a positivedirection. Remember the name JaredMiller. Te 174 pound Alaskan sophomoreis a major threat to opponents, and a majorasset to Northerns program, although hemay redshirt this season.

    Between the returning All-Americans

and the returning national qualiers,Northerns team has enough talent andexperience to compete or a nationaltrophy. Te same goes or UGF, eventhough the injury bug bit a chunk out otheir lineup. Te Argos do happen to havea touch more depth then Northern. TeLights may not be able to get another topten nish this season i a varsity wrestlergoes down.

Tivierge does, however, have a pair oaces in the hole. He signed both ommy

Cooper and Eli Hinebauch. Te twoClass A studs battled last season orthe 152 pound title. Cooper, the LaurelLocomotive, lost to the Blue Pony;Hinebauch ended up with his secondstate title. Cooper earned the silver orthe second year in a row. Tey bothshould mature nicely; especially with alittle college redshirt seasoning. Will they

though? As o now the red shirt is not onor o, its hanging in the closet. ysonis leaning towards keeping these twounderground, but you never know. Tewrestler that beat ommy Cooper in Buttis 2011 state champ Kyle Leir. Te two-time Libby Logger champ signed with UGlast spring. His red shirt is more like astraight jacket. He could possibly be morecollege ready then Zeiger or Schlosser.

He denitely has the strength and speed. But, i Schaeer wants to keep his utureprogram well adjusted, while giving thetalented reshmen some breathing room, then Leir will have to wait a year beore thRPMs redline.

Whatever number o line upajustments, injur eaults, overtimevictories, two a a practices, airmiles, or ierent brans o bagelsthese two teams encounter; one thingis or certain, the season is oung,

the legs are resh, an the lungs arebreathing cool, crisp Big Sk air. Wintrepresents more than just snow aniceit represents wrestling season. Athe rivalr between MSU-Northern anUGF grows, so oes the notion o amutual respect. These two teams feeoff each other. Enjo the feast.

On December 4th the MSU-Northern Lights beatUGF 21-20, chalking up a win in the history books.Havre hosted this rst o two seasonal duals inront o a packed and opinionated Armory crowd. This Rivalr nees a name. Some have tried, without success, to come up with one. Te Battle

or Montanas Mats? Highway 87? We need tobrainstorm that rivalry name. How about the Battleor the Golden Pheasant? No, too cute. Maybe Lewisvs. Clark? Who knows?Email our ieas to MTR [email protected].

    EVERy RIVALRy NEEDS A NAME

If ou are, show it. Keep it simple, if oure a UGF fan, think of coal, ink, etc.Whatever dark T-SHIRT ou have, wear it and BLACKOUT the Lights on Februar 6that the McLaughlin Center. If ou cheer for MSU-Northern, go in WHITE and let it shine. Can Northern sweep UGF? I the o, it will be the frst time since Februar 2005,the rst ear of UGFs program. Since then the Argonauts have never looked back, leading the series 11-6-1. Come out and show our support of Montana wrestling.

Te Falcons nished 3rd lastyear and lost 3 nalists romlast season to graduation, buteven with the loss o three studs(Clay Cathey, Sam Shelton, andrey Dillon) Coach Rich Malias

Falcons do have a nice line-upreturning with 7 state placers, 2

o which hold state titles. Deending champions, Sophomore JoeMalchuski and Senior Justin Waterson guide the Falcons intothe 2012-13 season. In addition, Skyview has a promising classo incoming reshman rom the always-powerul Castle RockMiddle School that has a tradition o producing wrestlers readyor the transition rom middle school to high school.

Great Falls High School (AA)Head Coach: Steve Komac2012 State Results: 2n

Coach Steve Komacs Bisoncame close to that covetedteam championship last year, but came up short losing to theGlacier Wolpack. Komac hassome big holes in his line up toll with the graduation o 4 time

state champ Cole Mendenhall and 2 time champ Josh Morin. Onething is or sure, he had a talented crop o Bison reshmen thatwrestled well at the State ournament last year. Casey Dobsonmade the nals at 105, Jarren Komac, the eldest son o Coach

Komac, had an impressive 3rd place nish, and Kessler Leonardstarted his high school career with a bronze. Coach Komac willbe relying heavily on Seniors Austin Shupe and Andres GeraniosShupe nished runner-up last year at 125 and Geranios camehome with a bronze medal in the 215-pound weight class. Last season the Ponies took home theBronze rophy, which marked the rsttime the Blue Ponies nished below 2ndsince the 2004 state tournament. Havre

will have some big shoes to ll with theloss o Seniors Eli Hinebauch and CaseySchaub each o whom capped theirillustrious careers last season with a pairo titles. Even with some holes in the lineup Scott Fillius is always expecting to ad

to the seven championships the Ponies have acquired under histenure. Te line-up or the Ponies looks solid but they only haveone nalist returning, 98 pounder Grayson Brenna, but learningrom the past, many team championships are won beore thenals even start. Te Ponies have good depth and high hopes rosome exceptional incoming reshman.

Glacier High School (AA)Hea Coach: Mark Fischer2012 State Results: STATE CHAMPIONS

Glacier High School graduated its rhigh school class in 2009, and in 201Mark Fischer steered the Wolpack tits rst wrestling state championshipGlacier had 12 wrestlers on the

Billings Senior High School (AA)Hea Coach: Lonnie Robertson2012 State Results: 4th

Coach Robertson had an impressive 13 wrestlerson the stand last year, but it was not quiteenough to get into the hardware. On the positiveside, the Broncs will return 5 placers rom lastyear. With Matt Schmidt deending his statetitle, Coach Robertsons team will look to get atrophy this year.

Forsth High School (BC)Hea Coach: Scott Weber2012 State Results: STATE CHAMPIONS

For a decade, Glasgow and Conradbattled atop the B-C ranks. Ten in

2011, the Forsyth Dogies broke onto thescene settling into the drivers seat. Coach

Scott Webers team is looking very strong againand looks to 3-peat in 2013. Te Dogies are returning severalworkhorses this season, starting with the Coachs sons, Matt andBrandon Weber, both deending champs, as well as deendingChamp aylor French, and Chris Nile who is a seasoned veteran.Tis makes Forsyth the team to beat in the 2012-13 season.

Belgrae High School (A)Hea Coach: Ran Schram2012 State Results: 4th

Coach Schrams Panthers crowned 3 statechamps rom last season and they will vie or theClass A itle this year. Cameron Alverson (119)and Bryce Weatherston (125) will both deendtheir titles as the team heads into the 2012-13season with high hopes and expectations.

105 lbs. will also be a strong part o the line-up othe Bengals as they struggle to break into the AA elite.

Sine High School (A)Hea Coach: Gu Melb2012 State Results: 5th

Guy Melbys Eagles are used to being in the topspot, but have been down a bit the past ew years.Tey are slowly creeping back up into the ClassA ranks. Look or Melbys Maulers to be verycompetitive and a title contender in the 2012-13season. Te Eagles are led by Gresch Jones whohad a phenomenal reshman year, winning the112-pound title.

Right now we are sitting at 54 kids, Ithink thats about where we are going tobe or the season. With ootball goingas long as it did, we might be getting aew more straggle in, though.

Blake: you are stepping into aprogram that once gaine national

attention as one o the greatest

in the countr or a school o its

size. What are our goals in tringto regain the glor o Butte High

wrestling?Humphre: Ive got some pretty lofy

goals, I want to be where I rememberwhat Butte High was when I was incollege. When people see a Butte kid intheir bracket, I want it to bring a littlesweat to them. I dont know i you canever match what coach Street did, butwere going to try.

Blake: you assemble a prett star-

stue sta with the aition o

Cole dallaserra, Eric dunmire, NickHaines an dan Larson, how o ou

envision a successul frst ear at

    Butte High?

Humphre: Weve got a lot o work to do,but we do have great kids. Tats thebonus. We just need to get back intogoing to work everyday to be the bestwe can. My recipe or success is to workhard everyday, and work harder thananyone else is.
