Three types of Monsanto genetically modified corn are under scrutiny in the wake of a new studypublished by the International Journal Of Biological Sciences which found that rats ingesting thecorn were subject to statistically significant amounts of organ toxicity. These three types -- Mon863, insecticide-producing Mon 810, and Roundup herbicide-absorbing NK 603 -- have beenapproved for consumption in the US and several countries in Europe.

The finding that corn produced by one of the world's agricultural giants could cause organ failurehas been met with obvious concern by food activists and consumers alike. It's not the first boutof negative publicity for Monsanto, which has been vilified for everything from producing AgentOrange, intimidating farmers, using aggressive tactics to squeeze out competition, pressuringfarmers to be dependent on their products, and strongly promoting the use of genetically

modified seeds here and abroad. It has been negatively portrayed in films such as "Food, Inc."and "The World According To Monsanto".

While some groups like Change.org, see this study as a rallying cry for regulatory action andboycott, others on both sides of the GMO issue think the study results itself are not clear andshouldn't be accepted wholeheartedly. The IJBS is not a peer-reviewed journal, and the work wasnot an independent analysis of the effects of the GM corn on rats. Rather, it was a full

interpretation of all of the samples of rats in the 90-day study that Monsanto itself sponsored.After analyzing the data, the European researchers came to the conclusion:

"Effects were mostly concentrated in kidney and liver function, the two major diet detoxificationorgans, but in detail differed with each GM type. In addition, some effects on heart, adrenal,spleen and blood cells were also frequently noted. As there normally exists sex differences inliver and kidney metabolism, the highly statistically significant disturbances in the function ofthese organs, seen between male and female rats, cannot be dismissed as biologicallyinsignificant as has been proposed by others. We therefore conclude that our data stronglysuggests that these GM maize varieties induce a state of hepatorenal toxicity.[...] Thesesubstances have never before been an integral part of the human or animal diet and thereforetheir health consequences for those who consume them, especially over long time periods arecurrently unknown."

Discovernotes that Greenpeace, an activist environmental group sponsored the scientists'research -- they had to sue to obtain the raw data in the first place, and that the IJBS is relativelyobscure. Leading nutrition professor Dr. Marion Nestle wrote on her blog about the study, "Ifound the paper extremely difficult to read, in part because it is written in exceptionally denseand opaque language, and in part because it presents the data in especially complicated tablesand figures." Monsanto claims that the study employed "non-traditional statistical methods toreassess toxicology data from studies conducted with MON 863, MON 810 and NK603 cornvarieties" and that the IJBS paper reaches "unsubstantiated conclusions."

The IJBS study itself strenuously suggests more testing over two years rather than 90 days toevaluate the long-term health impacts, and by independent researchers rather than Monsantoitself. The study also points out that Monsanto conducted the study only once rather thanmultiple times, and only tested one species -- rats -- and emphasizes that testing on moremammals of this GM maize is needed to reach any kind of conclusion on safety. This maize isused as both animal feed and for human consumption.

According to the FDA's website, the agency concludes that genetic engineering that occurred inthe maize varieties, MON 810, NK603, MON 863 was not different enough from past approvedproducts and did not need a pre-market review. The FDA essentially takes Monsanto's word thatthe company had done adequate testing to ensure its safety, as shown clearly in this letter.Several countries in Europe, such as Germany and France, have recently banned GM crops,specifically MON 810 after it had been approved for consumption in the European Union.

Furthermore, there are no laws requiring companies to label if their products contain GMOs.

Even food labeled "Organic" that is processed with multiple ingredients must only be 95%organic, leaving loopholes for obscure ingredients that are genetically modified to be included.HuffPost Blogger and Eco Etiquette columnist Jennifer Grayson has written a comprehensivearticle detailing the ways to avoid genetically modified foods in light of the fact that there are nolabeling requirements in the US.

So the facts are as follows: We eat corn and corn derivatives that have been genetically

modified, which has been banned for being unsafe in other countries -- the FDA has not

done independent testing on the health effects of at least three types of corn that we are

eating, and have instead taken Monsanto's word for the fact that they are safe. Monsanto

resisted releasing their data to independent researchers -- environmental groups had to sue

to get it. Once it was released and analyzed by one group of scientists, they wrote a dense

study in a non-peer reviewed journal and found statistically significant amounts of organ

failure in the rats in Monsanto's own study. Consumers often have no way of knowingclearly if they are eating genetically modified food.

The FDA did not return calls for comment.

Which is perhaps why the FDA staffer who wrote Taylors bio seems to have all-but-forgottenhis decade-plus of Monsanto work. Michael Taylor and Monsanto are responsible for subjectingthis country and many others to the increased risk of breast cancer (7 times greater risk), prostatecancer and colon cancer because of what they did to milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream with rBGHas well as to all the foods that rely on milk solids and other parts of milk.

As a bi-product of the rBGH fight Michael Taylor then led the ban on labeling of GM productsall together. This was labeled the principal of substantial equivalence which prohibits any

distinction to be made between GM and traditional products. Regardless of any testing or lackthere of on the possible effects of GM foods used for human consumption. (GMOs) could be safely released into the food supply.

He left the FDA in 1994 and a few years later became Monsantos Vice President in charge oflobbying in Washington. As a lobbyist, Taylor argued AGAINST the Delaney Clause, one of thefoundations of food safety regulation that prohibits cancer-causing chemicals to be added tofood.

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine this year said that genetically modifiedfoods, according to animal studies, are causally linked to accelerated aging, dysfunctionalimmune regulation, organ damage, gastrointestinal distress, and immune system damage. Astudy came out by the Union of Concerned Scientists confirming what we all know, that

genetically modified crops, on average, reduce yield. A USDA report from 2006 showed thatfarmers dont actually increase income from GMOs, but many actually lose income. And for thelast several years, the United States has been forced to spend $3-$5 billion per year to prop upthe prices of the GM crops no one wants.

If GMOs are indeed responsible for massive sickness and death, then the individual who oversawthe FDA policy that facilitated their introduction holds a uniquely infamous role in humanhistory. That person is Michael Taylor. Jeffrey M. Smith*

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack has a glowing reputation as being a schill for agribusiness biotechgiants like Monsanto support of genetically engineered pharmaceutical crops, especiallypharmaceutical corn. Vilsack was the origin of the Seed Pre-Emption bill in 2005, which manypeople in Iowa fought. The bill took away local governments possibility of ever having aregulation on seeds such as where GE would be grown, having GE-free buffers. Tom Vilsackwas also the founder and former chair of the Governors Biotechnology Partnership.

Monsanto is taking massive control over all farms through the falsely named Food Safety bills,introduced by Rosa DeLauro whose husband, Stanley Greenburg got rich from working forClinton and Monsanto. The agriculture committee is loaded with people who have gotten largedonations from Monsanto. The biggest of the Monsanto bills introduced by DeLauro is HR875. Identical bills that have been enacted into law in the European Union resulted in 60% ofthe Polish farmers are now gone and 60+ UK farmers have committed suicide. Iraq has been

rendered helpless serfs by the theft of their countrys seeds and criminalization of farmerscollection of their own seed. By far the most devasting is India, where 182,000 farmers havecommitted suicide since the WTO and IMF got hold of agriculture and our Big Ag firms wentin there, an additional 8 million farmers have left the land altogether.

By comparison to other nations the criminalization of our hard working family farmers is still inits infancy. In Ohio, state ag department SWAT team raid on an organic CoOp, Pennsylvaniaag department raids on horse and buggy Mennonites, California setting coliform levels so lowfresh milk dairy farmers would need cows that produced pasteurized milk right out the udder,arrest and handcuffing of a single mother in front of her children for selling goat milk, the USDApaying its agents bonuses for foreclosing on farms. HR-875 will make theses instances look likespecs of dust in the devastation it wishes to unleash on Americans.

This is the death of organic food and the criminalization of seed banking. It is a Monsanto takeover and Taylor is here to run it with a few former Monsanto sidekicks Clarence Thomas(Supreme Court), Ann Veneman (Executive Director of UNICEF).
