From these German toys, he learned to see the things around him as arrangements of geometry and shapes. The Wisconsin State Capitol, just two blocks from Monona Terrace’s proposed site, inspired the architect. He used the dome in fresh new ways at Monona Terrace. By removing decoration and sculpture, he revealed the simple beauty of the graceful curvilinear shape. Imagine all the different ways a curved line can take form- in arches, cylinders and spheres, for example. Use a highlighter to trace those shapes in the photographs below.
