Exciting Future for Priorswood Library

Celebrations took place last week (Friday 17 May)after Priorswood Library’s long-term future wasconfirmed with the signing of a Community LibraryPartnership.Library friends, partners, school and nursery childrenand staff joined together at the library to celebratethe signing of the agreement between The Friendsof Taunton Library and Somerset County Council.Last month’s signing marked the tenth long-termCommunity Library Partnership confirmed this yearbetween Somerset County Council and Friends andpartner groups across Somerset - and celebrates anew way of working closely with community partnersto help deliver library services across Somerset.Priorswood library will continue to be run and staffedby Somerset County Council with financial supportfrom the Taunton Unparished Area Fund and WestMonkton Parish Council.

Earlier this year, Somerset West and TauntonCouncil’s Taunton Unparished Area Fundannounced it was allocating £17k, and SomersetCommunity Foundation organised a grant fromClarke Willmott. Both of these grants will go towardsthe costs of the installation of Open+ Accesstechnology in the library later this year. This technology, successfully used in other countiesalready, will in time allow library customers to accessthe library outside current staffed library hours for upto 55 hours a week.Oliver Woodhams, Strategic Manager responsiblefor libraries at Somerset County Council said: “I amextremely pleased that partnership working in such apositive and proactive way has given PriorswoodLibrary a sustainable and exciting future. We arevery grateful for the support of the Friends ofTaunton Library, West Monkton Parish Council andmany other people and organisations who havehelped and supported us to reach this excitingpoint.”Sarah Gibb on behalf of the Friends of TauntonLibrary said: "All our hard work has been brought to

fruition. The library will go from strength to strength. We look forward to continuing in governance and in

any further support we can provide, makingPriorswood Library the heart of the community."£3K was also recently allocated annually by WestMonkton Parish Council towards the library.  PatriciaCavill from the Parish Council said: “West MonktonParish Council is delighted to be part of this initiative.A significant number of our Parishioners usePriorswood Library. Priorswood not only providesaccess to written books, but a wide range of newtechnologies, and as such offers opportunities to allages of users.”Priorswood Library will continue to be staffed, withnew technology enabling the library to open foradditional unstaffed hours due to be installed later inthe year.Following an induction session, library customers willbe able to access the library, borrow, return andrenew their library loans, collect items that have beenreserved, use the library’s public access computers

and online resources, when staff aren’t presentsimply by scanning the barcode on their library cardand using a PIN.A video of the CLP signing taking place can beviewed at: https://youtu.be/EfP2lMXJ8YU.For more information about Somerset’s librariesService, click www.somersetlibraries.co.uk or phone03001232224.

The Darkling ThrushBy Thomas Hardy, 1840 - 1928As mentioned in Brian Hill’s article on Page 7.

I leant upon a coppice gateWhen Frost was spectre-grey,And Winter's dregs made desolateThe weakening eye of day.The tangled bine-stems scored the skyLike strings of broken lyres,And all mankind that haunted nighHad sought their household fires.

The land's sharp features seemed to beThe Century's corpse outleant,His crypt the cloudy canopy,The wind his death-lament.The ancient pulse of germ and birthWas shrunken hard and dry,And every spirit upon earthSeemed fervourless as I.

At once a voice arose amongThe bleak twigs overheadIn a full-hearted evensongOf joy illimited; An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small,In blast-beruffled plume,Had chosen thus to fling his soulUpon the growing gloom.

So little cause for carolingsOf such ecstatic soundWas written on terrestrial thingsAfar or nigh around,That I could think there trembled throughHis happy good-night airSome blessed Hope, whereof he knewAnd I was unaware.

Somerset Birds

I am often asked how to tell the difference betweentwo regular West Monkton birds, the Mistle Thrushand the Song Thrush. Both are members of a largefamily. There are around 160 species of thrush inthe world and, setting aside the rare ones, we havethe familiar Blackbird, the Ring Ouzel, a bird thatreplaces it in the uplands and mountains, and twowinter visitors the Fieldfare and the Redwing.Size is a good clue. The Mistle Thrush is large, aboutthe size of a small dove, and although wary has a

bold demeanour. It is sandy brown above, usuallynoticeably paler than a Song Thrush, with a hint ofgreyness in the head. The breast and belly are offwhite, again paler than a Song Thrush and the darkspots underneath are more regularly spaced andsmaller and rounder. The legs tend to be stockierand, like the Song Thrush, are pale flesh incolouration. A useful difference is that the corners ofthe tail are white, and this is a conspicuous featurewhen the bird flies away, again looking ratherpigeon-like as it does so.Habitat and behaviour are also good pointers. TheMistle Thrush is aptly named, for it likes tall trees andparticularly those with this white-berried plant.Although ominivorous, mistletoe berries are afavourite food in autumn, and this bird is one of thefew that can digest them. Mistletoe is a parasiticplant and relies to a great extent on the Mistle Thrushto spread its seeds. These are sticky and adhere tobranches as the bird wipes its bill to clean it,germinating where they are left. The abundance ofmistletoe in West Monkton is testament to theactivities of the Mistle Thrush. It is not fond of small gardens but, when not foragingon open ground, prefers to use the topmost branchesof tall trees, which it uses in spring as song-posts.The song is not unmusical with a wildness about itand is far-carrying. Unlike the Song Thrush, it isrambling, and the notes are not repeated. MistleThrushes will sing from the treetops during thewildest and coldest weather, earning them the oldcountry name of Stormcock. It must surely be thisbird that Thomas Hardy had in mind when he pennedhis poem The Darkling Thrush.

The Song Thrush is a noticeably smaller bird, aboutthe size of a Blackbird and is much less bold, preferring to stay in or close to cover. It is often thesong that betrays its presence. There are superficialdifferences to its larger cousin, but the plumage iswarmer in tone, a rich chestnut brown above andbuff-white below. The spots are larger, and moremessy in distribution. Like the Mistle Thrush, it has awide taste in food items but it does have one specialtrick. Snails form a large part of its diet, and it has aunique way of dealing with them. Using a stone asan anvil, it grasps the mollusc by the shell openingand thrashes it against the stone until it shatters, revealing the soft insides. Favourite stones are usedregularly and are soon surrounded by shellfragments. The loud musical song is easy to remember oncelearned, because it consists of a number of repeatedphrases, delivered in a series. Although it will singfrom treetops it usually prefers some cover.Common in woodlands, it is also regularly found ingardens, and in some places can become quitetame. Our Mistle Thrushes don't move far, but someof our Song Thrushes migrate to Southern Europefor the winter, and birds from as far away as CentralAsia and Siberia reach our shores. It is oftenpossible to recognise these eastern races, as theyare a colder, greyer colour above and are generallymuch more wary.

Both species have declined in recent years, and insome parts of the country Mistle Thrushes inparticular have become quite scarce. Happily thisbird, and the Song Thrush are doing well in WestMonkton, and in neighbouring parishes. Long maythis be so.Brian HillSomerset Ornithological Society welcomes peoplewhatever their level of interest in birds. Our firstautumn meeting is at Ruishton Village Hall onThursday September 26th, when Rob Grimmondwill talk on the Birds of China. All are welcome, refreshments are free, and there isno charge. News fromWest Monkton ParishChurch in theSouth Quantock Benefice

We are at the end of anotherschool year with the hope of awonderful long balmy summer ahead. It’s a timewhen we might try to find some refreshment, taketime out from our busyness. We will be working with West Monkton PrimarySchool, as usual, to support the “Pilgrim Day” forthose about to move up to High School - the lovelynew building and grounds enable them to invite otherlocal schools to join in this day. It is one of the waysin which the church can be part of stretching thechildren’s imaginations and spirituality, help themlearn ways to find refreshment for the busy years atHigh School ahead of them - and we, as volunteers, treasure these times when the children stretch us aswell! Our oasis of a churchyard is open all hours, and Ihope you take the time to come and enjoy the peaceand the wildlife as it changes through the seasons(do be careful and accompany your children, please!)It is so important to our mental, physical and spiritualhealth to be out in nature, to have time to wonder andbe amazed by the beauty and complexity of thisamazing world God created for us to live in and lookafter. I pray the summer months give us all little morespace (and the weather!) to do this. There is also a new monthly opportunity to get someexercise, meet some new friends and help out withmaintaining the churchyard - doing a bit of tidying, weeding or more major clearing. We will be thereevery 1st Saturday of the month (ie 6th July and 3rdAugust) between 10am and 12 noon - coffee andbiscuits provided. All are welcome. As we think about “Refreshing” we’d love to invite youto our new monthly informal service in West MonktonSchool hall - we’ve called it “Refresh” because we allneed times to step aside from our everyday lives andfocus on a bigger picture. We start with a “refreshing”coffee and cake and then we have time to worship, toponder and to respond to God in some way. Jesussays in the Bible; “Come to me all who are weary …and I will give you rest … learn from me …. and youwill find rest for your souls.” (Matt 11:29abbr) If thatsounds like something for you - you don’t need toknow, or believe anything to come and join us - youwould be welcome!

With love and prayers that you can find refreshmentthis summer,

Mary

It was amoving time.”There will be a distribution of flyers with moreinformation nearer the time. Please do contact me ifyou want to share about your ministry and want toget prayer for yourself and your ministry.

The Year 1 children of West Monkton Primary Schoolcame to visit the Chapel and garden on 13th May.It was wonderful for us to stand in the garden andhear the joyful sound of excited children on their wayfrom their school along the road to the Chapel, abouthalf an hour walk. The first question we were askedas the children entered the Chapel was, ‘Is this yourhouse?’ It was a great opportunity to explain thepurpose of the Chapel and its history and workingout how long it had been in the area of Bathpool: theanswer being, since 1865.As it was a dry, sunny day the children were able toenjoy exploring the garden and discovering plantsthat smelt of toothpaste, lemon and herbs ‘like mumhas in the kitchen.’ It was lovely to have so manychildren and teachers visiting the Chapel andgarden, and we hope that they will come back againsoon. One lad said that as soon as he is older anddoesn’t play football on Sundays any more, he willcome to the service. We look forward to that day verymuch! On Saturday June 1st we had our usual CoffeeMorning followed in the afternoon by a sale ofdonated items. People from as far away asManchester had turned out their cupboards anddonated very generously towards the sale to raisemoney for the upkeep of the Community Garden andChapel. There was a steady trickle of visitors, onwhat was a beautiful day for International cricket, andwe eventually raised over £130. Many thank yous toall who supported this event with time and finance. Our small congregation went to Bath to the BathBaptist Church to hear a visiting Indian Ministerspeaking about his growing ministry in poor villagesin India. He has planted 40 churches to date and hasstarted a Bible College. He asked us to pray for hisministry and we asked him to pray for ours. We allenjoyed a delicious Asian communal meal afterwardsand fellowship with gracious brothers and sisters inChrist. Please keep an eye on our notice board for anyimpromptu events that may interest you. I encourageyou to call in to the community Garden which is full ofrose, honeysuckle and lavender fragrance at themoment and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.Have a wonderful summer.Pastor Naomi

West MonktonPrimary School

Dear Community,I thought I’d take this chanceto write to you all and let youknow a little more about me.My name is James Blackmore and I have officiallybeen the Headteacher at West Monkton PrimarySchool since January. At this point, the schoolacademised as part of The Oak Partnership. The OakPartnership is a small Multi-Academy Trust (MAT)and has been set-up along with Ruishton PrimarySchool, Blackbrook Primary School and SelworthySpecial School. At the point of academisation, theHeadteacher at West Monkton, Mr Ian Robinson, became the Trust’s CEO and I was then appointed asthe Headteacher. This is a pertinent moment to thankhim for all of his work with the school over the lastseven years or so.We are truly excited about the benefits that formalcollaboration, as part of a MAT, will bring. We havealready begun to improve teaching and learningacross the schools, as a result of groups ofpractitioners working together and sharing goodpractice. As time goes by, we will be able to ensurejoint procurement allows our schools to run moreefficiently with the aid of joined up thinking. I lookforward to providing you with updates on the newchapter in the school’s journey within each edition.Although I started as Head in January, I am by nomeans a stranger to West Monkton School. My firstpost at the school was on its School Road site in2011. I joined as a Year 6 teacher, initially, beforeteaching Year 2 as Assistant Headteacher. In 2015, Itook up my first headship post at Spaxton PrimarySchool but in 2018 returned to West Monkton in orderto join the school on its exciting new adventure as anacademy. I feel at home at West Monkton and amproud to be serving its community. In my early months as Headteacher, we have activelyfocused on the development of the whole child. Partof this work has been the development of our ForestSchool. We are lucky enough to have a new build butthis has meant the outside environment is fairlyunderdeveloped. Mr Benbow, our new Forest Schoollead, has been creative in his design for an outdoorteaching area that will enable children to thrive inareas beyond the core curriculum. This is a veryexciting project for us and there is more to come! Aswe move forward I would like to open the site to thewider community so that you can see the fruits of ourhard work.I wish you all the best as the Summer TermprogressesJ. Blackmore

The webpage alsoincludes useful regular newsletters developed by thecontractors who are delivering the Junction 25 M5improvements. The page is available here:https://westmonkton.net/highways-updates/

Neighbourhood PlanningThe National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF)was revised last summer, in which therecommendation was made that NeighbourhoodPlans should be revised/reviewed every two years. These processes of review take time and lots ofconsultation needs to be done, and so although theNP for West Monkton and Cheddon Fitzaine wasmade in April 2018, the NP Group has commencedits review with a view to being completed in 2020.At this moment in time, no major changes areforeseen, but we have some hearsay evidence thatthe NP needs tweaking a little especially in thesection on Recreation. In this particular aspect ofCommunity life, progress has been made in that theCountry Park is now a reality, soon to be open to thepublic. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the areato the north of the main road between Yallands Hilland the new houses at Northwalls. You’ll see thetree planting that has been done already.

If you missed out on being part of the preparation ofthe original Neighbourhood Plan, and would like tojoin in the review, please contact West MonktonAssistant Clerk Tricia Cavill,[email protected] 413 524 orCheddon Fitzpaine Clerk Jo Pearson,[email protected]

Greening the Garden

The news is full of information about environmentalissues and part of our work at Hestercombe has beento look into different ways that we can 'green up' thecharity. I have worked at Hestercombe for 10 yearsand the climate feels noticeably different now to when Istarted. Certainly the last few years have been muchdrier than normal and we are lucky that Gertrude Jekyllwas excited by Mediterranean style plants that candeal with a lack of water. It makes sense thatgardening and looking after the planet should go handin hand and most of us enjoy creating environmentsthat wildlife enjoys. But what else can we do?Water savingCollect water from everywhere you can - guttering fromhouses, sheds and glasshouses - and use this forwatering plants.Reuse grey water. I use the water from my washing upbowl to water my garden. Just make sure that youhaven't used a bleach-based cleaning product. I readan article by Alice Fowler once and she had investedin a siphon system that went from her bath out of thewindow and to the garden for her to water. We have started using horticultural gravel trays tostand pots of cuttings in the glasshouse in. These fillup as you water the plants and leave a reservoiravailable for the plants to suck up with capillary action. This can help cut down on watering requirements.Mulching your beds every year will really help lockmoisture into your soil (see composting).Reduce chemicalsThis can be quite tricky if you are used to usingherbicides and pesticides and a good start is literallyjust to cut down. Spot spray or paint on herbicidesinstead of covering huge areas. Researching organic/environmentally friendly alternatives is a good idea.Nematodes are really useful, especially in aglasshouse situation. At Hestercombe we use them tohelp combat vine weevil and sciarid fly. Nematodeswork by introducing organisms that feed off of the pest.Another way to do this is to introduce plants to yourgarden that attract beneficial insects such as ladybirdsand hover fly. Ladybird larvae will help munch throughyour aphids and you can encourage them by growingfennel, yarrow, scented geraniums and cosmos. Hoverfly larvae will also feast on aphids. The hover fly adultsare attracted to yellow and orange flowers such asmarigolds and anything in the umbellifer family such ascow parsley and ammi. There are some useful homemade remedies too suchas using a bit of washing up liquid in a squirty bottle tospray aphids. The washing up liquid is sticky andmakes it hard for them to survive.Swap to organic slug pellets. Don't be fooled, like me,to think that they are not working. They have a differentchemical compound to the non-organic ones. Whenyou use non-organic pellets you can see the explodedslugs and snails on the surface the next day. Whenyou use the organic ones there is no sign of this asthey work in a different way and the slugs disappearunderground- easy to think that they haven't worked -but a study by the RHS recently found them aseffective as the non-organic slug pellets.

Using bicarbonate of soda in water to spray on leavesand to act as a natural fungicide can help fungalproblems in plants. You can also make a spray fromwater and garlic - but be warned - I used this on theroses as Hestercombe once and then was mortifiedwhen a visitor smelt a rose and declared that it smeltof garlic!I use liquid seaweed as a fertiliser and this can beused as a drench or a foliar feed. A high-potassiumfeed (potassium encourages flowers and fruits) canbe made by putting fresh leaves of comfrey or nettleinto a barrel for a few weeks and then diluting inwater. Again, be warned - its a bit smelly, so keep alid on it.Peat freeWhere possible try to buy peat free compost or atleast reduced peat compost. Both are now readilyavailable. You can even buy a recycled peat compost. This is made from peat silt that has built up in thewater works.Recycle potsMost plant pots that we use are black and apparentlythat is the main reason that they cannot be recycledas the machines cannot see them separately from theblack conveyor belt (this just sounds ridiculous tome?!) so try to use and reuse them as many times aspossible. Where possible buy coir pots. I grow sweetpeas at home in toilet rolls and plant these straightinto the ground. Industry really needs to address thissituation and invest in a new type of pot - either adifferent colour (if it really is as simple as that) ormade from cardboard or some other product. Whereyou get the opportunity to chose vote with yourpurchase!CompostingHome composting is a marvellous way of getting ridof waste and making a useful product in the meantime. At Hestercombe all non-pernicious weeds, cutgrass, shredded paper, veg waste, tea leaves, etc goonto the compost heap. We have five bays and turnone into the other throughout the year until the lastbay is full of well rotted compost. Over the wettermonths this compost is spread in a thick layer overthe beds, locking in any moisture into the soil andfeeding it a good dose of nutrients and microorganisms. Moving the compost helps add air into themix which in turn generates heat and speeds up thedecaying process, making compost faster. At homethis is more difficult. If you can, have two compostbins and turn one into the other. You can also buyrotating compost bins to try and speed it up. If youreally have no room then get a green bin from thecouncil so that they can make compost.WildlifeDon’t forget the wildlife. Encouraging wildlife into yourgarden is a marvellous thing to do. Make sure there iswater for the birds, nectar for the insects and a pondfor the amphibians. Leave wild untidy areas - piles oflogs for bug hotels and areas of long grass forinsects.  With a good balance of wildlife, the ecosystem is  more able to look after itself. A wise manonce told me that you cannot fight nature so maybewe should all learn to work with it instead.Happy gardeningClaire Greenslade, Head Gardener

Phoenix PhotographersGetting out of bed in the wee small hours, driving forseveral hours, leaving a nice warm car carrying a bagfull of cameras, equipment, plus a tripod, clamberingover rocks and boulders on a beach or maybescaling a Rocky Tor on Dartmoor or somewhere inthe wilds of Scotland. Perhaps not everybody's ideaof life style, however club member Lee Tippetchooses to do all this to obtain the shots he wants. The results are stunning. Lee often uses graduatedfilters to increase exposure time which gives movingwater and clouds ethereal dream like effects.Photographing in what is known as the golden hour, which is an hour before dawn and an hour beforesunset, Lee catches the wonderful sunlit glow onrocks and water. Snow covered landscapes taken on

the Isle of Skye and other locations in Scotland alsofeatures in Lee's presentation. Particularlymemorable were shots taken on the coast ofCornwall of the ruins of the tin mine buildings withthe setting sun reflecting off the old stones.Another hazard of all this adventurous photographywhich Lee mentioned was being on a high Torphotographing the sunset, when he said he realizedit had got dark, the only way to get back home wasdown, relying more on gravity and good luck than inany mountaineering skills and he managed to surviveit. An interesting and inspirational evening formembers, particularly so as it was presented by afellow club member. The club meets Monday evenings at 7:30pm in WestMonkton Village Hall www.pgop.org.uk

Village Hall AGM - 22nd July7:00pm to receive the Hall Accounts for 2018/20197:30pm Business of the AGM followed byLight Refreshments and time to socialise

The hall is run by a group of independent trustees, representatives from organisations who use the halland honorary members who carry out specific duties.New Independent trustees may be voted on at theAnnual General Meeting. The commitment is not too onerous. We hold sixManagement Committee Meetings a year and sixFinance Sub-Committee Meetings. Membership ofthe Finance Committee is optional. We are a registered charity and the administration ofthe hall depends entirely on members of ourcommunity coming forward to ensure that it keepsgoing. It was set up in the early 1950s, soon afterthe end of World War II. It was a real struggle at thattime to get the funds together to provide a modestbuilding to commemorate members of our parish wholost their lives in World War I, and II.Since then to commemorate HM Queen Elizabeth II’sSilver Jubilee, with the support of grants and muchfundraising, we were able to provide the substantialbrick built hall that we have today. In 2002, againwith the support of grants and much fundraising, wewere able to add the medium sized Heathfield Hallto commemorate HM Queen Elizabeth II’s GoldenJubilee. The main building has very recently been refurbishedwith the provision of up to date toilet areas anddouble glazing. We have been able to fund this byusing our share of the money made available bydevelopers to support our community.

I cannot believe we are half way through anotheryear, weather getting warmer, and we are nowlooking forward to summer, fantastic. Our April meeting certainly made you think aboutSpring – Jill Venn joined us with her fantastic rangeof hats which she hires out to people for thosespecial occasions. She started the evening giving usthe history of hats through the ages, and how hatscame into her life, after her lifetime career as adance instructor. Many of our ladies, althoughnormally smartly dressed, made even more of aneffort, and came in their fineries for Jill to match a hatwith their outfit. We all had a real fun evening andsome of the ladies were amazed at styles of hatswhich they did not dream would suit them, but in factthey looked fabulous in them. Our May meeting is our month for the AGM followedby a buffet supper. As we have several newmembers, we took the opportunity to go through thehistory of the WI, the roles of the CommitteeMembers, and how everything works, discussing indepth the two resolutions which are discussed andvoted on at the Annual General Meeting of the WI.In June we are having a summer social, visiting theGreat Western Hotel. It has been closed for a longperiod of time, but has now reopened. Crisis in Care

Somerset Praised for itsCare Support in Panorama: Crisis in CareThe Panorama ‘Crisis in Care’ films were recentlybroadcast on BBC 1.The film crew spent ten months filming SomersetCounty Council’s Adult Social Care teams, shining alight on the incredible work going on in care and thepressures the system faces as growing demandoutstrips funding. They document incredible stories of families andunpaid carers looking after loved ones, and thedifficult decisions that come with the growing demandfor care from an ageing population at a time of limitedfunding. At Somerset Carers we are incredibly proud to be anintegral part of the county-wide support for unpaidCarers, a service funded by Somerset CountyCouncil. Our network of Carers, Village andCommunity Agents work together to supportindividuals not only in crisis but who need regular 1:1support, taking a holistic approach to the needs ofthe carer and everyone affected.Between October 2017 and March 2019 SomersetCarers has:

· Supported 595 Carers face to face

· Received 1,667 calls to the Advice Line

· Had over 5,500 visits to the websitewww.somersetcarers.org for signposting to thesupport available within Somerset

· Updated and published 1500 freecopies of ‘If Only I Knew That’,written by a Carer to give othersguidance and support on their caringjourney.

Keeley Rudd, CEO for CCS (theCommunity Council for Somerset) who runSomerset Carers, said: “Carers areincredible people who are unpaid and oftenwork incredibly long hours without thoughtfor their own health and without whom thetoll on governmental resources would beimmeasurably increased. We believe there

are over 60,000 unpaid Carers in Somerset”.She continued “It is our mission to support peoplewho may feel lonely and isolated in their caring role, from helping them to apply for funding they may beentitled to, get access to mobility equipment theymay need, or simply providing a listening andunderstanding ear with our Carers Agents or Talkand Support team. If you need one to one support inyour caring role, please contact us at SomersetCarers.”Cllr David Fothergill, Leader of Somerset CountyCouncil said: “Thank you to our many carers acrossSomerset for all the tremendous work they do insupporting friends, families and their communities. We wanted to get involved in filming Panorama as ithelps us bring to light the national issue of theenormous pressures our social care system isunder on a daily basis. These pressures will onlydeepen as time goes on - our funding continues todecrease whilst our population ages, living longerbut with more complex needs.  It’s no surprise thatsome of the cases Panorama show are challenging.Together, we work extremely hard across Somersetto do the very best for those we support, with theaim of improving health and wellbeing for everyone. If you are a carer and need help, information orsupport, please get in touch with the SomersetCarers service, our contact centre Somerset Director visit one of our Talking Cafes held in locationsacross Somerset.Carers Week 2019 ran from June 10th – June 17th- and we hosted Cake for Carers in the weeksbefore, during and after at regular Carers Groups asa Thank You to those amazing people.

Journey to Zero Waste

We’re all much better at recycling (and hopefully re-using) than we were a few years ago. As a result ourblack bin waste is reducing significantly, which isgreat news given it goes to landfill. All the same, ittakes a while to get your head around the guidelinesof what can and can’t be recycled, and what theSomerset Waste Partnership will accept at thePriorswood centre, but not collect. I seem always tohave a huge bag of stuff I’m intending to take the tip,but never quite get round to it. Then there is thegrowing population of milk bottle tops which I’m suremust be of use to someone but I’ve forgotten who. So,hope this helps….Somerset Waste collection will take:· Glass bottles without metal lids· Cardboard· Plastic milk bottles, lemonade bottles, etc.

without the lids· Aluminium foil (washed and scrunched) and

washed metal cans· Paper – not the shiny metallic stuff and if you are

obsessive like me, with plastic windows andsellotape removed

· Clothes and shoes· Small scale garden waste if you have paid for a

green binStuff you can take to the Priorswood Centreyourself but will not be collected:· The usual stuff like wood, glass, man-made wood,

paper, metal, electric goods, garden waste, etc.· Margarine tubs, plastic trays including black ones,

yogurt pots, plastic soup containers andtetrapacks (the waxed cardboard containers thathave a plastic lining). These need to be washed.

Compass Disability Services at Unit 11/12,Belvedere Trading Estate, Taunton, TA1 1BH alsorecycles the following:· Personal care and beauty packaging. Eg roll-on

deodorant, plastic packaging for wipes, makeuppots and tubes, pumps and trigger sprays, toothpaste tubes with lids, toothbrushes.

· Food packaging:eg plastic bottle tops (excludingmilk tops), cracker and biscuit wrappers, babyfood pouches and caps (washed).

No Crisp packets, Milk bottle tops orChocolate wrappers

Morrisons and Asda also accept carrier bags, breadbags and cereal bags for recycling.Although it’s good news SWP and Compass nowaccept these, I do wonder about the carbon footprintof us all driving to Taunton with our individual bags ofassorted items. A neighbourly share system or localcollection point might work? Watch this space. What are eco-bricks?Eco-bricks are plastic bottles with lids (wide-neckedwork best) in which you ram all the bits of plastic filmand wrapping you can’t possibly re-use, as tight aspossible. These have been used as buildingmaterials in some African countries (held togetherwith a mud paste) which I can’t see taking off in ourparish. However, they reduce the volume of plasticthat will go into landfill and prevent odd bits of plasticflying off the lorry and finding its way into hedgerows, fields and ultimately waterways, where they do somuch damage.Zero packaging shopping at Lesser Litter If you take your own food containers to the LesserLitter shop in Paul St, Taunton, you can buy cereals, nuts, pulses, flour, tea, coffee, pasta, rice, olive oil,eco-friendly washing up liquid and lots more withoutusing any packaging at all.Wellington Repair café: Saturday June 15thEnjoy coffee and a home-made cake at the Baptisthall in South Street while a team of locals sharpenyour garden tools, mend your clothes and repairelectrical items and bikes for a donation. My foodprocessor came back to life under the ministrations ofman with a tiny screw-driver. This is a great way toavoid the chuck it away culture to which we havebecome accustomed. We need one in Taunton! Lookthem up to find out the next date:www.facebook.com/Wellington-Repair-CafeAdapted from an article by Dixie Darch ([email protected]) first published in Link Up.

A small group had planned thebreakfast but many people helpedwith getting The Street party ready, bunting, tables and electricitysources were begged andborrowed. There was a practicefrying of eggs - which was good asthe first two slid off the wronglyangled metal plate!

Senior SnippetsTop Tips to Eat Well and Age Well

Food and nutrition play an important role in stayingwell. But many people lose their interest in food asthey get older and, according to Home InsteadSenior Care research, one in five over 75s struggleto cook their own food.As part of our new campaign called ‘Stay Nourished,’our aim is to raise awareness of the importance ofmaintaining healthy eating habits.Home Instead Senior Care Taunton is here to shareits knowledge and help recognise the signs ofmalnutrition so that families or those providing careand support can take action. Here are some top tips for encouraging your lovedone to enjoy mealtimes:· Keep mealtimes interesting. Aromas can help to

stimulate the appetite. Encourage your loved oneto get involved in the selection, preparation andserving of meals wherever possible.

· Top Tip: Help your loved one to make a shoppinglist and decide on a healthy meal plan for theweek.

· Make the dining area comfortable, removedistractions and create a nice atmosphere.

· Think about portion sizes; If appetite is aproblem, it is better to introduce smaller portionsmore often instead of a large plate of food 3 timesa day. Offering finger foods is also a good way toencourage people to eat if someone doesn’t wanta traditional meal.

· Ensure healthy snack options are available andmake sure food and drinks are easily accessiblethroughout the day.

· Avoid calorie-free or low-fat products unlessyour loved one has specifically been advised toeat them by their GP.

· Always prioritise mealtimes and try to create amealtime routine. Avoid rushing and coercingsomeone to eat. Gentle persuasion is better.

· Confront the myth that weight loss is a normalprocess with ageing as our bodies become lessactive. Weight loss is not a normal part of theageing process

If you are feeling under strain and need a helpinghand or a bit of respite time, Home Instead SeniorCare can help. Our CARE Givers can provide helparound the house as well as assistance with mealpreparation, shopping and errands.

And Finally ...They told the young man that it couldn't be done.

Smiling he said that he knew it. And he tackled the job that couldn't be done - and he couldn't do it.

A 360 Mile Walk

Local girl, Rosie Lugg, who grew up in Monkton Heathfield, iscurrently walking all 630 miles of the south west coast path forcharity.Rosie, who works as a doctor at Musgrove Hospital, and herfriend Vanessa, are walking between 10-20 miles per day over9 weeks to fundraise for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).Sadly, at least 12 young people die every week in the UK fromundiagnosed heart conditions. CRY aim to prevent thedevastation of sudden cardiac deaths by raising awareness, screening young people for heart problems and doing research. They also provide valuable support to families affected bysudden death. The walk started inMinehead in Apriland should finish on4th July in Poole. Sofar, the girls havecovered 250 miles, more than half amillion steps andpassed through

Lands End on to the south Cornwall coast. Overall they will ascendthe equivalent height of Mount Everest 4 times, and walk theequivalent of Taunton to the northern highlands of Scotland!Along the way they have met some amazing people, who haveprovided accommodation and donated to CRY. Many of these arecomplete strangers and the girls have been blown away by people’sgenerosity. If anyone in the village would like to donate to CRY (and make allthe blisters worthwhile!) please visit their fundraising page atwww.justgiving.com/RosieandVanessaOr contact Trish Lugg on 01823412280/07455227450.

If you would like to follow their progress on Facebook, their page istitled “Rosie and Ness walk the South West Coast Path”.
