Introduction
Late blight
• Most important disease in potato and tomato
• Large outbreaks on semi-domesticated plants such as tree tomato
(Solanum betaceum) and other Solanaceous plants
TizonLatino – Fontagro Project
• Genotyping based on a multiplex of 12 SSR markers (EuroBlight) to study
populations of P. infestans in Latin America Genetic changes in
populations
New Phytophthora species
• P. betacei, was described infecting tree tomato crops in Colombia
17th EuroBlight 2019 Workshop, York, UK, 12-15 May 2019
• P. infestans in potato in the central region of Colombia
• New species: P. betacei in tree tomato in Colombia
• P. infestans in tomato in Colombia
• P. infestans in Chile, Argentina and Brazil in potato
• Future actions of TizonLatino and Fontagro Project

Population genetic structure of the P. infestans isolates according to geographical origin
17th EuroBlight 2019 Workshop, York, UK, 12-15 May 2019
Population genetic structure of the P. infestans isolates according to potato cultivars
• Neither geographic location nor the potato genotype significantly shaped
the population structure of the P. infestans population.
• The populations are composed by a high number of genotypes but with a
high similarity among them.
• The absence of genetic structure according to the host cultivar suggests a
high level of migration or gene flow among different host cultivars.
• No evidence of sexual reproduction was detected for P. infestans isolates
collected from potato crops (A1 mating type).
• For the first time, the subclonal variation was thoroughly described in the
most important potato production region in Colombia

P. betacei in tree tomato in the central region of Colombia (Cundinamarca State)
• A new Phytophthora species, P. betacei, was described infecting tree
tomato crops in Southern Colombia (Nariño State).
• The latest results also permitted to reinforce and support the description
of the new species and describe the expanded geographical range of P.
betacei in the central region of Colombia (Cundinamarca State).
