ConocoPhillips responded by quickly adjusting our plans, while remaining focused on executing the aspects of the business that we control. Beginning in 2016, the company will no longer provide a company subsidy to participants who turn 65 and transition to post-65 retiree Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans with UnitedHealthcare (UHC). However, even without the company subsidy, pre-65 retirees moving into similar post-65 retiree medical benefits will see reduced premiums.

The company routinely evaluates its benefit plans for coverage, costs and competitiveness. Our assessments show that UHC’s Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans have become more affordable, while also providing improved benefits coverage. These improvements can be partially attributed to health care reform.

What does this mean for you? • If you’re currently eligible for the

pre-65 retiree medical plan, there are no changes to the subsidy provisions in that plan. However, if you turn 65 on or after Jan. 1, 2016, and move to the post-65 retiree

medical plan, you will not continue to receive a company subsidy.

• If you’re already a participant in the post-65 retiree medical plan, you will continue to receive the company subsidy toward the cost of your UHC Medicare Supplement plan in 2016.

• Over the next 10 years (by January 2026), the company subsidy will be phased out for participants (covered by Dec. 31, 2015) in the post-65 retiree medical plan.

• If you have an eligible dependent who is under 65 as of Jan. 1, 2016, he or she will not receive a company subsidy upon transition to the post-65 retiree medical plan.

Although you’re not required to take any action, we encourage you to review the Summary of Material Modifications we distributed to retirees in September with additional details about these changes.

Changes to medical benefits for post-65 retireesShould you have any questions, you can either attend a Retiree Benefits Road Show (see the back page of this newsletter for the complete list of dates and locations) or you may call a Benefits Center representative at 800-622-5501 or 718-354-1344, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CDT, Monday through Friday.

Challenging environments (continued) Emergency preparedness at ConocoPhillips

Along with an intense focus on incident prevention, ConocoPhillips employs a systematic multi-tiered approach to crisis management.

“If we do have an unplanned event, it’s critical that we have the proper equipment, people and processes to respond,” said Mike Ferrow, vice president, Health, Safety & Environment. “Building our emergency response capability is critical to our continuous pursuit of safe operations.”

For any incident, the company’s response priorities are people, the environment, assets and its reputation, in this order. The program includes an incident notification process to ensure early awareness at the proper levels and to the appropriate individuals. ConocoPhillips works to the internationally accepted Incident Command System (ICS) to provide a standardized, structured, and ideally, a predictable process to manage unplanned events as efficiently as practicable. ICS is based upon the National Incident Management System (NIMS), used by many local, state and federal response entities as well.

When an unplanned event occurs, the business unit owns the incident and all other ConocoPhillips resources are

focused to help it mitigate the consequences and return to normal operations. Most events are small and are handled quickly and safely at the worksite or business unit level by well-trained local teams.

“The basic premise of our model is that no single business is expected to manage a large, protracted event and concurrently manage their day-to-day business,” said Josh Soybel, manager, Crisis Management & Emergency Response. “For this reason, we maintain a modestly-sized, but well-trained, volunteer response team that can be accessed and leveraged, per the scalable ICS model, to supplement a business unit response team if required.”

In addition to internal resources, ConocoPhillips subscribes to surface and sub-sea oil spill and emergency response entities and participates in mutual aid agreements that can further augment a response if ever needed.

“Prevention is always our first line of defense; however, we must be prepared to respond,” Ferrow said. “As a responsible operator, we must be fully prepared. Our commitment to the safety of our people, the environment and operational excellence is the highest importance.”

Emergency preparedness at ConocoPhillips

approach to our business in this environment.

“When prices began to fall, we moved quickly, taking decisive steps to position our company for lower, more volatile prices by exercising capital flexibility and reducing costs company-wide,” said Lance. “We started in October 2014 with a capital plan to spend $16 billion. We stepped it down to $13.5 billion in December. By April, we had reduced our estimated annual spend to $11.5 billion for three years and launched our $1 billion cost reduction challenge.”

COST ProjectLance recently introduced the Cost Optimization Sustainability Team (COST), tasked with identifying ways to refocus ConocoPhillips’ business for a future of relatively low, volatile commodity prices. Leading the COST Project is Michael Hatfield, formerly vice president of the Rockies business unit. Hatfield reports to Don Wallette, executive vice president, Commercial, Business Development & Corporate Planning.

“This project represents a significant opportunity to reassess and change how we manage our business,” said Lance. “By undertaking this project, I am confident that we will position ConocoPhillips to thrive in any price environment for years to come.”

Lance acknowledges that the COST Project will mean significant change for the organization. Those changes were announced late in the third quarter with implementation planned for the fourth quarter.

Reduced deepwater exploration spendingThe company recently announced its decision to reduce future deepwater exploration spending.

“This was a very difficult decision,” said Lance. “But it will further increase our capital flexibility and reduce expenses. This should strengthen our ability to achieve cash flow neutrality in 2017 even if lower commodity prices persist.”

Lance emphasized that the deepwater team has performed extremely well and commented that the company has achieved notable success in the deepwater program, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico Lower Tertiary play and offshore Senegal.

“We are committed to delivering the value we have created from these discoveries, while reducing the number of deepwater exploratory prospects we drill in the future,” Lance said. “But put simply, the deepwater exploration growth engine doesn’t compete with our captured resource inventory, especially in the low price environment.”

The company has also terminated its contract for the Ensco DS-9 deepwater drill ship that was scheduled for delivery to the Gulf of Mexico in late 2015 to begin drilling the company’s operated deepwater inventory.

Stock pricesLance acknowledged that the company’s share price performance is adding to the anxiety level among shareholders.

“Some of what is driving the shares is beyond our control, which makes it especially important to deliver upon the things we do control,” Lance said. “We’ve got a lot more work to do. The second half of the year will have its share of challenges and difficult decisions.”

Moving forwardLance noted that the company will continue to pursue organic growth through more focused exploration programs.

“With increased capital flexibility, we can direct more investment to our captured resource base of 44 billion barrels of oil equivalent, which includes significant identified inventory in the highest value areas of the Eagle Ford, Bakken, Permian and Western Canada unconventional plays, as well as our legacy businesses around the world,” Lance said.

In closing, Lance reinforced the company’s ongoing commitments to safety and execution, as well as his confidence in the workforce.

“We know that at some point this cycle will turn, and we want to be the company with the vision, assets, people and reputation to thrive. That means knowing how to adapt; having a great set of assets that can deliver profitable growth and returns; having a workforce that is nimble; and protecting our reputation for being a company that lives by its SPIRIT Values. We know we have to change, but we won’t change our SPIRIT Values.”

In Memoriam includes the names of deceased ConocoPhillips employees and retirees as submitted quarterly by Hewitt Associates to ConocoPhillips. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept death notices submitted directly for publication in this section. If you have any questions, please send an email to [email protected].

When you or a family member suffers an accident or illness, your first inclination may be to rush to the nearest hospital emergency room (ER). That is the right choice in serious or life-threatening conditions. Use of an ER for non-emergency conditions, however, incurs higher rate charges. Choosing the appropriate option for your situation will save you time and money.

TeladocA telephonic medical consultation available 24/7 for acute health issues. Teladoc doctors can diagnose, recommend treatment and prescribe medication, when necessary. Take 10 minutes to set up your account online now.

Your Physician’s OfficeIf the situation is not urgent or if the issue is related to an ongoing condition for which you are already being treated, make an appointment with your family physician.

CVS Minute ClinicNurse practitioners and physician assistants at these walk-in clinics can diagnose, treat and write prescriptions for common illnesses and treat minor wounds, abrasions, joint sprains and skin conditions. Show your Aetna card.

Your guide to choosing the right level of careUrgent CareLocal urgent care centers can provide treatment for injuries that require stitches, sprains and broken bones at a fraction of the cost, and often with shorter waiting times.

Hospital based ERsHospital based ERs are the best place to seek care if you have a true medical emergency.

Stand-alone ERsERs that are not attached to a larger hospital are a new health care trend, especially in urban areas. Like their hospital-based counterparts, they come with a high price tag for services. If you seek treatment for a non-emergency condition you end up paying top dollar for everyday medical care. And if you do have a true medical emergency that requires hospitalization you may need to take an ambulance to a hospital-based ER, incurring even more charges.

Making informed choices about how and where you receive medical care is all part of taking an active role in your health. The more you know, the better chance you have of getting the right care, at the right price, for both you and ConocoPhillips.

As the national conversation on U.S. crude oil exports continues, it is undeniable that exporting crude oil would grow the nation’s economy. A robust American economy can offer low unemployment, healthy retail sales, consumer confidence and ample revenue for governments to provide services to citizens. And economic growth propels business and consumer optimism, creating a domino effect that supports more economic growth.

Congress is now considering legislation to lift the ban on crude oil exports and showing support at the local level will be key to getting that legislation passed. Now would be the perfect time to insert your voice into the debate through Power in Cooperation, ConocoPhillips’ new advocacy community. As a retiree, you have a firsthand understanding of how the oil and natural gas industry has impacted the U.S. economy. You have witnessed advancements in technology that have made the U.S. the new global leader in oil and natural gas production. By joining Power in Cooperation, you can help us tell that story and make a difference within your community.

Please join Power in Cooperation today and consider submitting a letter to the editor of your local newspaper or writing your elected official. It’s quick, easy and will help spread the message that removing the ban would help to protect and create jobs, stimulate our economy and lower gasoline prices while ensuring energy security for the long term and allowing the U.S. to remain the global leader in oil production. You can lend your voice to this important issue by visiting www.powerincooperation.com/actioncenter.aspx.

There is a solid economic case for crude oil exports, supported by both government and academic studies. They conclude that exports would broadly benefit the national economy; stimulate domestic production, even in today’s low-price environment; protect and create jobs; and decrease consumer prices at the pump. Despite such findings, U.S. crude exports are limited — that’s creating barriers to growth and threatening the nation’s long-term economic development. Let’s continue to grow the American economy. It’s time for Congress to allow U.S. oil exports.

“We just finished a 4,400-mile road trip across the western U.S. We saw expansive solar panel installations, wind turbines on the plains, new oil and gas wells and construction of high-voltage power transmission systems. Affordable gasoline made this trip to hike our national parks possible.”

Sara Edman recently retired after 34 years of working in the oil and gas industry, serving in a range of roles including government and public policy.
