' IMPRESSIONS FROM JAPAN

The Japanese people are veryfriendly, generous, andhospitable. The Friends ofSanta Rosa Association did agreat job of hospitality, theysponsored trips to a silkfactory, Satsuma potteryfactory, Reimekan Mueseum, andan excursion to Chiran, an oldSamurai village. We alsoenjoyed the hot sand baths atIbusuki.

Rotary clubs in Kyoto,£ .roshima, and Kagoshima were%€sponsible for hosting us forcormorant fishing, factorytours of Mazda and KirinBrewing as well as providingdinners and lunches.

In a word we were wined and;; dined by all our good Japanesefriends and acquaintancesthroughout Japan.

I was surprised by all thesmall shops, small trucks, small autos, small restaurantsand the ubiquitous small ricefields. The weather was moresultry than I expected, with

1 frequent rain showers and,'muggy days. Kagoshima' sweather reminded me of Key

: West, since it is at the samelatitude. The temperature whenyou got up was the same aswhen you went to bed in theevening, and it's just hotter

• at midday.

In every way we had .a' wonderful trip that will l?ememorable for years to come.•

With Dan Lambert safely backfrom Japan I thought it wouldbe nice to hear from the

students who traveled with Dan

and made up the 1991 SantaRosa/Kagoshima travel group. This is what Jeanette Kratofil

had to say about herexperience:

I left for Japan with the hopeof better understanding andappreciating the Japanese, ofenjoying a new culture, a newclimate, and cuisine. I hadhoped to return with a littleinsight into a foreign countryand share my new knowledgewith others. But, little did Iexpect such a short time tomake such an impact on mylife. From the moment Istepped off the plane andfilled my lungs with thethick, moist air, the countryof Japan extended its welcometo me. Piece by piece theculture fell in a neat pathwaybefore me and beckoned me tofollow. Fans andhandkerchiefs, chopsticks andno napkins, taking shoes offand carrying the all importantumbrella, a smile and a

friendly bow, all parts of anew lifestyle, a graciousculture. And, above andbeyond the rules and thecustoms were generous heartsof all the Japanese people.

From the beginning, even inthe bustle of Tokyo, afriendly smile and a curiousquestion or two gave me thewelcomed feeling longed for.The Rotarians in Kyoto,Hiroshima and Kagoshima, thefriends of Santa Rosa, allthe host families, and Midoridid more than I would have

ever expected and deserve. Alarge THANK YOU for all theirefforts. The beauty of Japanshines through in the facesof all its people, people Inow consider my friends, friends I hope to visitagain. This trip was anincredible opportunity tounderstand and appreciate theJapanese, but it was also achance to befriend a kind and

generous people. I'd like tothank all those who made this

opportunity possible.

WOW! Sounds like JeanetteKratofil returned home with agreater respect for distantcultures. Welcome home

Jeanette and thanks forsharing your experience withus.
