facilitate the exchange of information and ideas regarding these automobiles.

February 17th, 7:00 pm.

• MCCC Cruise-in every Thursday (weather permitting), at Ty's Smokehouse, 7174 Stage Rd #101, Bartlett, TN 38133.

CLUB NEWS

Spring is coming, and with it comes a wealth of new car activities for the coming year. In fact, a few things are already beginning to materialize. Memphis International Raceway is already pursuing a weekly schedule of race related activities, and an ISCA car show is scheduled in nearby Tupelo MS for starters. MCCC members David and Cindy Hubbard deserve a big thanks for hosting the Valentine’s Day Party this past Saturday the 15th.

Don't Forget: Club Sponsors: Now is the time to recruit club sponsors. Bringing outside financial support to the club will allow us to plan for our 2020 agenda, and it also helps the club seed our annual donation to our supported charities. Please help the club secure sponsor commitments ASAP.

Annual Dues: The club is currently collecting annual dues. All members must pay their dues prior to the March meeting. Don’t let yourself drop off our roster! Being a member of the MCCC provides a wide breadth of technical knowledge, car club camaraderie, and numerous planned events. Dues are ($25) payable to club treasurer Cindy Hubbard at your earliest possible convenience. Remember that your annual membership dues includes everyone in your immediate family, so the whole gang can share your passion for vintage Chevys.

Meeting Place: We get The Brunswick Kitchen entirely to ourselves for our meetings on the third Monday of each month. The management has gone above and beyond in providing us with a spacious meeting place by opening their restaurant exclusively for our monthly meetings, at a time when they are normally closed. With our ever increasing membership, we draw big crowds to our meetings, and we need the space. Finding a facility that can devote their attention to group as large as ours is rare, and we are thankful that Jason and Heather Hill have seen fit to cater to our needs, but lets not make it too hard on them. Try to come to the meetings early enough so that you can order and enjoy a meal from their selection of home cooked favorites before the actual meeting begins at 7:00 PM. Meals can be ordered as early as 5:30 PM so you don’t have to stay hungry while we conduct business.

Also Brewing: Cars & Coffee: There’s a lot to be said for starting your weekend with a laid back automotive event that allows you to socialize with fellow car enthusiasts over a steaming cup of java and maybe even a decadent chocolate donut. And wouldn’t you know it… where once there were none, now we now have a Cars & Coffee event somewhere in our metro area to kick start your motorized machinations almost every weekend.

The second weekend of any decent weather month brings us On the Edge: Cars & Coffee. This early AM cruise-in spot is located at 627 Monroe Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38013. On the third weekend of each month, we get Cars & Coffee Bartlett, located at W.J. Freeman park, 2629 Bartlett Blvd, Bartlett, TN 38134.

Cars and Coffee gatherings are taking place almost every Saturday somewhere in the Memphis area.

Then on the fourth weekend of each month we can pour up a cup at the original Memphis area Car & Coffee event now held at the GPAC|Germantown Performing Arts Center. Note that the GPAC has been undergoing a series of construction upgrades for several months, and as a result, this Car & Coffee event is sometimes required to move to the NAPA warehouse at 7415 US Highway 64, Memphis, TN 38133. So if you don’t see it in Germantown, head over to the big NAPA in Bartlett.

Super Chevy Show: This long standing Chevy returns to Memphis International Raceway April 3rd-5th for it’s 34th edition. This is the unofficial kick-off of the outdoor car show season, and it arrives just in time to welcome spring. The club officers have decided that we will leave the registration and parking duties to the MIR and Super Chevy staff this year, and simply enjoy being a part of one of the largest Super Chevy events anywhere in the country. So help us make a good showing with a large club turnout at this Chevy centric event. It helps to keep us connected with MIR track management, and it’s a lot of fun to be a part of an event of this scope.

Other Things to Do:

Ed Roth Exhibit: Hold on to your hats kats and kittens, because Kustom Kulture has crashed head-on with the legendary Chevrolet Corvette at the National Corvette Museum of all places. This new exhibit opened January 31st, and is called Car-toon Creatures, Kustom Kars and Corvettes: The Art and Influence of Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth. If you’ve been on terra firma for more than a four or five decades, then you probably remember first-hand the imaginative automotive creations of the late Ed Roth and his fully formed anti-Disney sidekick Rat Fink. If you don’t remember, then get ready for a time-travel experience wherein Weirdo sweatshirts were airbrushed by Roth at car shows, and Revell made scale model kits of everything

Ed Roth’s infamous ‘Beatnik Bandit’ is among the oddball creations displayed at the NCM through 2020

that sprang forth from his fertile mind. Roth’s Beatnik Bandit was one of the first sixteen Hot Wheels toys ever produced, and led to 52 years and counting of the little die-cast ankle breakers being left unattended on hardwood floors worldwide. There’s also a bunch of artwork on display with the half dozen original cars and some select tribute cars. Of course, it should be extra appealing to a Chevy enthusiast to make the day trip to Bowling Green Kentucky just for a chance to take in the first rate Corvette history lesson that is available at the museum. And should you need any further excuses to plan a trip to the Tri-Five Nationals in August, now you have a good one. These freaky cars just don’t show up anywhere, much less all at once.

.

MCCC Fun Run: Mark your calendars now, for the return the MCCC Fun Run on May 17th, 2020. We have periodically done these low pressure social gatherings over the years as a way for club members to interact on a personal basis with their Classic Chevys at hand. While we encourage you to arrive in your classic, it’s not a pre-requisite. We want you to bond with your fellow club members and enjoy what will likely be a fine spring day in the picturesque confines of the Buckhead Creek Recreation Complex, classic or not. It’s a good excuse to be out and about in your vintage Chevrolet, and we’ll try to make an effort to get every Classic Chevy that attends photographed for posterity and for our ever expanding web-based presence. Our nouvelle cuisine for the day will consist primarily of traditional picnic chow and red Solo cup beverages. So polish up your ride for it’s photo shoot, and arrive hungry. Further details and sign-up sheets for vittles will emerge as the date approaches.

Auction Action: Always a good way to keep a finger on the pulse of the collector car hobby is by monitoring the automotive auctions and the recent internet sales that are taking place involving our preferred breed of vintage cars. No, I’m not apt to run out and buy one of these premium cars because their cost out paces my checking account pretty quickly, but it’s nice to know what’s hot and what’s not, and sometimes, a particular car is unusual enough to really grab your attention. Case in point is this mostly nondescript 1959 Chevrolet Biscayne two-door sedan. If it looks like a cop car, that’s because it is. One of only 40 ever made, this one was acquired by the Oregon Highway Patrol as a pursuit vehicle soon after it was built. It’s equipped with the 348 ‘W’ motor, and these models were never available to the general public when new. It fetched $50,000 at a Mecum Auction four years ago after a three year restoration.

But maybe you want something a little more… full featured. In that case how about one of the ‘Holy Grail’ Classic Chevys of all time? The original run of 55-56 Bel Air Nomad two-door wagons have been sought after for years due to their inescapable cool factor, and this one is currently on auction at the Bring a Trailer website. It has been given the complete make-over treatment and features many upgrades such as a 383

stroker motor, and an air bagged suspension, yet it still looks pretty much stock with it’s fab fifties color combo and wide whitewall tires. It stirred up a fair bit of interest when first posted and has run up a $28,000 price tag as of Sunday, but there are still five more days left on this auction as I type this newsletter. If you dig Nomads, you should at least check this one out. But careful though, you might just decide to get in on the bidding before the auction ends.

Yes. That’s a new 2020 Corvette that I photographed with my iPhone just to prove that I saw one before you did. It was parked at a Mexican Restaurant in Bowling Green KY, and had drawn a sizable throng of admirers in the dusk of a warm August evening during the Ti-five Nats. No doubt a production mule from the nearby Corvette factory, it was a sight to behold. These cars are now beginning to roll off the production line. Stay tuned for more details.
