2. Mechanisms structure and classification
2.1. Degrees of freedom and link conditions
The mechanisms and machines are technical systems whose
components are designed so that they accomplish certain accurately
established functions.
It is known that to impose a certain motion to a body, its mobility
should be limited by several bodies through reciprocal connections.
A rigid solid, free in space, has six degrees of freedom, designated by L
that is six independent simple motions, namely: three translations along the
three axes of coordinates and three rotations around these axes. The rigid solid
which is a component of mechanisms is called link (kinematics element).
Two links of a mechanism, which are in permanent contact through a
connection which allows the mobility at least for one of the elements, make up
a joint (kinematics coupling). The joint is the simplest structural combination
of mechanisms. It introduces certain restrictions in the relative motions of the
links. These restrictions are called link conditions and their number is
designated by S. The link conditions should be an integer greater than zero and
smaller than six and it is determined with the relation:
S = 6 - L. (2.1)
The connection of the links in joints has a large variety of shapes.
2.2. Joints (kinematics couplings) classification
The joints are grouped in classes, function of the number of the link
conditions imposed to the links in their relative motion. The number of the
suppressed motions S determines the class of the joint. Consequently, the class
of the joint is determined through the determination of the number of
independent simple motions, which can be effect by one of the links of the
joint, in its relative motion and which is then subtracted from six.
In table 2.1, joints of different classes and their symbolic representation
are presented.

two possible motions, rotation around the screw axis and translation along this

combinaţie structurală a mecanismelor. Ea introduce anumite restricţii în
mişcarea relativă a elementelor cinematice.
S = 6 - L. (2.1)

axis, is considered to have only an independent motion and five motions
locked, therefore it is of class five. That is because the two motions, rotation
and translation, in the case of this joint, are not independent.
The joints can be also classified according to the following criteria:
I. According to the relative positions of the planes in which the motion is
possible:
- plane;
- spatial;
II. According to the character of the relative motion:
- of rotation
- of translation;
III. According to the shape of the contact surface:
- lower joints (with surface contact);
- higher joints (with point or linear contact);
IV. According to the character of the connection between the contact surfaces:
- closed (the joint can not be detached without dismantling one link);
- open (the links can be detached without dismantling).
2.3. Linkages. Mechanisms
A combination of more links connected among them by joints, make
up a linkage. The linkages can be open (fig. 2.1, a) or closed (fig. 2.1,b),
simple (fig. 2.1,b) or complex (fig. 2.1, c), plane or spatial.

de-a lungul acestei axe, se consideră că are numai o singură mişcare
- plane;
- spaţiale;
II. În funcţie de caracterul mişcării relative:
- de rotaţie;
- de translaţie;
III. În funcţie de forma suprafeţelor în contact:
- cuple cinematice inferioare (cu contact pe suprafaţă);
- cuple cinematice superioare (cu contact punctiform sau liniar);
IV.
dintre elemente);
- deschise (elementele pot fi desfăcute fără demontare).
2.3. Lanţuri cinematice. Mecanisme
deschise (fig. 2.1, a) sau închise (fig. 2.1,b), simple (fig. 2.1,b) sau complexe
(fig. 2.1, c), plane ori spaţiale.

Mechanisms structure and classification 22
A mechanism is a linkage with a fixed link, called stand, which has the
property that for a given motion of one or more driving links, all other links of
the mechanism have motions univocally determined. One says that the
mechanism has a desmodromic property. The stand can be set in evidence by
hachuring (fig. 2.2).
2.4. Mobility degree of mechanisms. Mechanisms families
The determination of the mobility degree of a mechanism, equal to the
number of independent simple motions which can be given to it, is made by
subtracting the overall number of the link conditions introduced by the joints
from the overall number of the motions which would be effected by the n
mobile links if they were free.
The mobility degree M of a mechanism can be determined with the
relation:
M = 6.n -5.C5 - 4.C4 - 3.C3 - 2.C2 - C1, (2.2)
where: C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5 are the number of the joints of class 1, 2, 3, 4
and respectively 5, from the considered mechanism.
Frequently, there are mechanisms in which certain common link
conditions are imposed with all links. For example, with plane mechanisms
(fig. 2.2), none of its links can perform translation motion along the axis Oz,
perpendicular to the mechanisms plane. Neither rotation motion can be made
around the axes Ox and Oz, contained in the mechanism plane. Therefore
these mechanisms have three common link conditions, imposed to all their
links. In this situation the n mobile links of the mechanism would not make
6.n motions, but only (6 - 3).n motions. Corresponding to this situation the
number of the link conditions introduced by the joints will be reduced.
Consequently, the mobility degree of plane mechanisms, with three common
link conditions, will be calculated with relation:
M = 3.n - 2.C5 - C4. (2.3)
According to the number of the common link conditions, the
mechanisms are classified in five families, for which the mobility degree will
be determined with the relations:
(univoc) determinate. Se spune că mecanismul are proprietatea de
desmodromie (fig. 2.2).
M = 6.n -5.C5 - 4.C4 - 3.C3 - 2.C2 - C1, (2.2)
M = 3.n - 2.C5 - C4. (2.3)
Mechanisms structure and classification 24
- the family zero: M = 6.n - 5.C5 - 4.C4 - 3.C3 - 2.C2 - C1;
- the family one: M = 5.n - 4.C5 - 3.C4 - 2.C3 - C2; (2.4)
- the family two: M = 4.n - 3.C5 - 2.C4 - C3; (2.5)
- the family three: M = 3.n - 2.C5 - C4;
- the family four: M = 2.n - C5. (2.6)
For the determination of the mobility degree of a mechanism, one need
know its family. The determination of the mechanism family is made through
the choice of an orthogonal system of axes of coordinate and the determination
of the possible motions of the links with respect to these axes. If all joints of
the mechanism can not make one of six motions, this is considered a common
link condition imposed to all joints. The relations (2.2), (2.3), ..., (2.6) can be
used only after the passive links as well as the passive joints are eliminated.
The passive links are introduced to improve the transmission of the forces, to
avoid the premature wear etc.
2.5. Higher joints replacement with linkage containing only lower
joints
In view of making easier the kinematics and kinetostatic analysis of the
plane mechanisms, which are widely used in machine building, joints of forth
class are replaced with linkages containing only joints of fifth class. When the
joints of the 4-th class are replaced and for obtaining the replacement
mechanism, the following conditions must be fulfilled: - the structure of the
replacement mechanism must be the same as that of the initial mechanism; -
the relative motion between the links of the mechanism does not change.
To determine the linkage which can replace a higher joint of 4-th class,
the calculation relation of the mobility degree will be written for the respective
plane mechanism, before and after replacement:
M = 3.n - 2.C5 - C4 = 3.(n +n’) - 2.(C5 + C5
' ), (2.7)
where: n is the number of the links of the mechanism before the replacing;
Structura şi clasificarea mecanismelor 25
- familia zero: M = 6.n - 5.C5 - 4.C4 - 3.C3 - 2.C2 - C1;
- familia unu: M = 5.n - 4.C5 - 3.C4 - 2.C3 - C2; (2.4)
- familia doi: M = 4.n - 3.C5 - 2.C4 - C3; (2.5)
- familia trei: M = 3.n - 2.C5 - C4;
- familia patru: M = 2.n - C5. (2.6)
M = 3.n - 2.C5 - C4 = 3.(n +n’) - 2.(C5 + C5
' ), (2.7)
unde: n este numărul elementelor cinematice înainte de înlocuire;
Mechanisms structure and classification 26
n’ - the number of the links introduced by the 4-th class joint replacing;
C5 - the number of the joints of the 5-th class before replacing;
C5
' - the number of joints of the 5-th class introduced at the replacing of
the 4-th class joint;
C4 - the number of the joints of the 4-th class before replacing.
Considering C4 = 1, the relation (2.7) becomes:
3n’ - 2. C5
' + 1 = 0, (2.8)
an equation which if solved with integers has the solutions:
n’ = 1; C5
' = 2.
Therefore a higher joint can be replaced, in the simplest way with a
link and two joints of the 5-th class. For making the replacement the following
method is used: in the contact point of the two curves which make the joint of
the 4-th class, the common normal N - N is drawn, on which the curvature
centres of the two curves are determined. In these curvature centres, A and B
(fig. 2.3) rotation joints of 5-th class are placed and they are joined with the
link AB. Further on these joints are joined with those to which the links of the
4-th class joint was connected (with O1 and O2 in fig. 2.3,a).
After the replacing mechanism is determined, its mobility degree is
determined with the relation:
M = 3.n -2.C5, (2.9)
where: n is the overall number of the mobile links after replacing;
C5 - the overall number of the joints of the 5-th class, after replacing.

înlocuirea cuplelor de clasa a IV-a;

M = 3n’ - 2. C5
' + 1 = 0, (2.8)
n’ = 1; C5
' = 2.
M = 3.n -2.C5, (2.9)
unde: n este numărul total al elementelor mobile după înlocuire;
C5 – numărul total de cuple cinematice de clasa a V-a, după înlocuire;

2.6. Structural classification of the plane mechanisms
Generally, the mechanisms, and especially the plane mechanisms are
made on the bases of the so called structural groups (Assur- Artobolevscki).
Structural group (kinematics, assuric) is defined as the simplest linkage with
the mobility degree equal to zero. In conformity with this definition, the
structural formula of the structural groups is:
3.n - 2.C5 = 0, (2.10)
that establishes the relationship between the number of the links and of the
joints of the group. Solving the equation (2.10) with integers, the following
pairs of numbers results:
n = 2;4;6; ...
C5 = 3;6;9; ...
The simplest structural groups have two links and three 5-th class
joints - these being groups of the second class. According to the nature of the
joints (rotation or translation) and their position in the structure of the group, 5
aspects can be distinguished (table 2.2). In the structure of the plane
mechanisms, it can be also included groups of higher classes to class two. The
designing of mechanisms on the base of structural group consists in linking
one or more groups by their marginal joints to the driving link and stand (table
2.2), only to the driving links (table 2.2) or to the other mobile links of the
mechanisms and to the stand.
In table 2.2, the five aspects of structural groups of class two, order two
are presented, together with examples of basic mechanisms made up on the
bases of second class groups.
The driving link or links have their law of motion known, a fact
permitting the indication of their angular speed in the figure (graphically).
Details concerning the design of complex mechanisms on the base of
the structural groups may be found in 43 .
The class of the structural groups is given by the number of the joints
which make up the most complex closed outline composing the respective
group and their order is determined by the number of the free joints of the V-th
class with which the respective group is connected in the mechanism.
(2.11)
Structura şi clasificarea mecanismelor 29
2.6. Clasificarea structurală a mecanismelor plane
n = 2;4;6; ...
C5 = 3;6;9; ...

Mechanisms structure and classification 32
The class of the mechanism is given by the highest class of the groups
which built it.
For the kinematics study of the mechanisms, they are decomposed in
their basic mechanisms (driving links) and structural groups, starting with the
basic mechanisms.
The purpose of the plane mechanisms classification is that to study any
type of plane mechanism by its decomposing in their components, which can
be analysed by specific methods. Thus the Theory of mechanisms gives
specific methods for the study of the speeds, accelerations, inertia forces, the
reactions from the joints, for the driving link and for each structural group.
This classification is valid for the plane mechanisms with joints of the
V-th class, mechanisms in which all the type of the plane mechanisms can be
reduced to, by replacing the higher joints, of the IV-th class.
IV-a.

2.7. The kinematic and structural schemes of the mechanisms.
The kinematic scheme is a representation on a certain scale of the
mechanism, in which the links and joints are represented by their conventional
symbols given in standards. In the kinematic scheme all length of the links are
represented on the same scale and the angle are equal to those of the actual
mechanism. The structural scheme is a representation of the linking manner of
the mechanism links, without taking into account the scales and the translation
joints are represented with the symbols of the rotation joints. If the mechanism
contains higher joints of the IV-th class, it is necessary that the scheme of the
equivalent mechanism to be drawn, in which the higher joints were replaced
with linkages having only lower joints. On the structural scheme base, we can
decompose the mechanisms into driving links and structural groups.
Separating the driving links, the simplest structural groups are looked for and
only the mechanisms can not be decomposed into second class groups we try
to find groups of the third, IV-th, V-th class etc.
After marking the structural groups on the structural scheme, the
kinematics scheme is decomposed, representing the respective links and
groups on a scale. If the mechanism has in its construction structural groups
with links having their length equal to zero, it is preferred that they to be
represented with a certain length, on which to be written = 0. This
representation permits the identification the aspect of structural groups and the
correct calculation of its kinematics parameters and of their reactions from
joints.
