CHOSEN BOOK:Madeleine by Bernard Taylor

In this book, Madeleine and Tess are identical twin sisters. However, Madeleine is not satisfied because she doesn't have what Tess does, and what she wants is Tess's husband Matt Severn. Madeleine torments Tess to no end, waiting for the day she can push Tess out of the way and claim Matt and he and Tess's three kids as her own.

THEMEThe theme of this book is definitely always be happy with what you have. In the book, because Madeleine wants Tess's husband, Matt, all to herself. This causes her to accidentally kill her mother, almost kill herself, murder her twin sister, and set the house that Tess and she and Matt's daughter, Lauren, were in on fire. Madeleine wasn't happy with what she had, and this caused her to become a whole other person. A second theme is you can’t always get what you want. The author is trying to tell us that if we have, for example, a one story house and you see someone whose house has three stories, an indoor pool, and a three-acre backyard with a basketball court, be happy with your one story house.

ARTWORKThis man is obviously happy with what he has, since he has a huge smile on his face. I chose this piece of art because one of the themes I’m working with is about being happy with what you have, and the elderly gentleman in the drawing is happy.

SONG

"You Can't Always Get What You Want" by The Rolling Stones.

This song matches the theme I chose perfectly because I chose the theme ‘you can’t always get what you want’, and that’s the title of this song. The lyrics are about how hard it is to find happiness. No matter what you have, you always want more. Mick Jagger explained: "It's a good song, even if I say so myself. It's got a very sing-along chorus, and people can identify with it: No one gets what they always want.”

REFLECTION

In the book I chose, Madeleine, Madeleine was not happy with what she had, and she ended up killing both her twin sister and their mother over it, by pushing her twin off a cliff and their mother down a flight of stairs. I chose this book because it’s one of the most recent things that I’ve read. The song I chose, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones, it talks about not always getting your way, but finding a way to get what you need and to be happy with that. I chose this song because it was one of the first songs to come to mind when I was thinking about what songs matched the themes I chose, and because my family and I often joke about how Keith Richards, the Stones’ guitarist, is a living fossil. The artwork I chose, Happy Polish Man by Nicole Zeug, is a drawing of an elderly man smiling. I chose this artwork because when I Googled ‘Artwork about being happy”, I found Happy Polish Man. I thought that one of the themes I chose, being happy with what you have, applied to Happy Polish Man because he’s smiling, and appears to be very happy.

The most common theme in the song, book, and artwork I chose was be happy with what you have.
