FMS DefinedFMS Defined

• A common motor activity with specific movement patterns … which form the foundation for more advanced and specific movement activities (p. 253)

Why Are FMS Important? Why Are FMS Important?

• Fundamental Movement Skills Are the basic building blocks for the overall

development of physical literacy Are critical for children to become

competent in sporting activities

• Without them, many children and youth choose to withdraw from sport

Categories of FMSCategories of FMS

• FMS include:

Locomotor skills: consist of total body movement

Stability skills: includes the ability to sense a shift in the body and adjust for it

Object manipulation: a force given or received

FMS Progression FMS Progression

• There is typically a developmental progression amongst the skills

• Children must master certain stability skills before they can progress onto locomotor skills (Stopping involves stability)

• Manipulative skills are generally the last to emerge

Conclusion/ Games DebriefConclusion/ Games Debrief

• Fundamental Movement Skills are critical building blocks for physical literacy

• There are three categories of fundamental movements Locomotor Stability Object manipulation

• There is a developmental progression to when these skills begin to emerge
