Get a new view! At ModestoView we have been saying that since 997. It is good to notice the small things. It is the frills around the edge, the hidden track on a CD, the extra fork at a restaurant and the corbel of a vintage building in Modesto? What was that? The archi- tecture of Modesto? Yes. If you have taken the time to walk around and just look at our buildings and our houses you will get a whole new view of Modesto. Going to dinner downtown? Park on 3th and walk and look at some of the shops, the retro tower at 4th and J, the scrolls on the First Methodist Church of Modesto and the books cast into the McHenry Museum as it used to be a library and you will be amazed at what you will find. Every- where you look there is something to see. When you look around, you notice the amazing designs in the College area, the variety of the trees, the sound of music coming from a Café, the smell of bread outside your favorite restaurant, the flowers on the tables, the cool gifts in a boutique, the conversation of two people on a patio, the sconces on the walls and the colors and paintings in the art galleries and the bright neon of the State and the new modern tower of the Brenden and of course, the arches… the amazing smorgasbord of arch- es in our city, and it goes on and on. College area, the variety of the trees, the sound of

music coming from a Café, the smell of bread outside

your favorite restaurant, the flowers on the tables, the

cool gifts in a boutique, the conversation of two people

on a patio, the sconces on the walls and the colors and

paintings in the art galleries and the bright neon of the

State and the new modern tower of the Brenden and of

course, the arches… the amazing smorgasbord of arch-

Downey 60th Birthday!

The Downey Alumni is putting on an Anniver-sary Celebration of the opening of Downey High School which opened in the Fall of 1951. Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 17 at the school. The hours are from 9:00 - 3:00. There will be tours of the school, classic car show, displays of memorabilia from over the years. Knight Sounds will be playing music and there will be a program withmaster of ceremonies Dr. Curtis Grant, featuring slide shows of different decades. Differ-ent choral groups will be reunited with a tribute to the founding Principal, Milford Olson and memories of Mamie. Don’t miss the catered lunch of tri-tip, salads, chili, rolls, butter for $12.00 per person. Dessert will be supplied by the alumni. The event is free and lunches will be pre-sold. For more info and to get involved, please contact Steve & Linda Pedego at 523-1420. You are also invited to the Friday Night Football Game at Chuck Hughes Stadium. Celebrate our local history and share some school spirit.

Flying Blind is Back!Have you seen my girl….she’s the one with the curly hair….OK, you know this song by heart. If you have never heard it, get ready for the first big reunion of Flying Blind. Flying Blind captured the heart of Modesto during 2000 and 2001 before inking a record deal with Universal/Republic and even getting their song Smokescreen (Have you seen my girl) on the American Pie 2 soundtrack. Flying Blind attached huge crowds for their shows. Some at the small places like Charlie’s on Granger to the open air 10th St Plaza and filling the Modesto Center Plaza and drawing thousands to their X fest stage. The amazing part was that they were loved by all ages. The small kids loved their songs and on-stage fun and adults and parents loved the music and the sense of humor. Flying Blind had something for everyone and now they are back. After an LA relocation and a hiatus, the original team of Matt Brown, Scott Beck. KeithCole, Andrew Franca and Jeff Greene are back as well as Steve Christain rounding up the full Flying Blind line up. Coaxed out of retirement for the Hughson 100 Year Anniversary, it was if Flying Blind never missed a day playing. At the last minute, when a family emergency took Panic at the Disco out of the X-Fest line up, Chris Ricci contacted Flying Blind. Who else in town could command a huge stage and light up X-fest at such short notice. And they did. The old songs sound great and there is new music on the way. Now, the next wave will get to know Flying Blind as they take to the streets for a huge all-ages reunion show on J Street in front of the State Theatre. So get the entire family and all of your friends welcome Flying Blind back, October 1 at the State.

Time to laugh! It is always a good time to yuk it up. You can check out some of our local comedians

at the St Clair Theatre at 47 7th St on Saturday nights. The St. Clair is also doing

reggae nights and other fun shows . Check out the ModestoView.com calendar for

regular updates. Go ahead, cross the tracks and check out a fun time.

Modesto has many avenues for our talented children to develop their perform-ing skills. Center Stage Kids, a dream child of singer/performer Dawn Peter-son, is an inviting and nurturing place for young performers ages five through seventeen. It is located at 1217 H Street in downtown Modesto. I recently met with Dawn and discovered Center Stage Kids is beginning its sixth year. Julienne’s School of Dance was home for their first two years before enroll-ment increased and warranted a new venue. An amazing thing happened after Dawn’s trip to Israel, the building that used to be Trophy Works and Chartreuse Muse became available. It was a “meant to be”. Dawn and her husband, Bill, immediately began cleaning, painting and creating a color-ful, engaging studio. She takes care of everything involved with the business including cleaning, billing, teaching and productions.

Center Stage Kids’ mission is to provide a program that nurtures and develops the self-confidence that young performers need in order to excel in musical theater. It creates a comfortable and fun atmosphere with positive reinforce-ment, in which the child can build and improve his/her vocal, dance and acting techniques. It offers challenging and educational experiences in which foster and enhance natural creativity and self-assurance. Finally, it provides an opportunity for the children to apply these skills to all aspects of their life, such as giving oral presentations with assurance at school and in the commu-nity, increased confidence in social situations, the learning and refinement of self-discipline and the ability to work together as performance teams.

Center Stage Kids staff includes, Dawn, Amy Underwood, Heather Vargas, Char Ferreira, and guest staff including RichardMann, Lin Sexton and Kaye Osborn. Two semesters of classes are offered: August 15 through December and January through June. It is not too late to sign up for fall classes. This year there will be special Break-Out sessions for ages 11 and up in Shake-speare, stage make-up, directing, Sign Language and a special workshop this spring with Disney RepChris McPherson. A holiday program will be offered December 10 at the studio. Beyond, an end-of-the-year show with sketches written by Lin Sexton, will be performed at the Gallo Center for the Arts on June 9.

If you would like more information, please call Dawn at 604-0411. Classes are on Mondays and Tuesdays. Classes are set-up by ages: 5 and 6 years, 7 and 8 years, 9 and 10 years, 11,12,13 years, and high school. Five and six years class tuition is $65 a month. All other classes are $75 a month. Don’t delay, give Center Stage Kids a call today!

DREAMS

In broken hopes do dreams lay,Shattered glass, broken windows once peering into dirt roads ofambitious minds.Destroyed by avarice,a monster,a creature of soul, feeding off the corrupted thoughtsof hollow men, heads filled with straw.Hearts of sawdust, limbs of manipulated planks of wood.Whispered words questioning,“Is it worth it?”Lost on the way to success, overtaken by avarice.Broken dreams.Broken men.

PAPAPAVIO’SGreek Goodness, Opa!!!

With the Greek Festival upon us here in Modesto Sept. 17th and 18th at The Greek Orthodox Church of Annunciation, I’m really craving some lamb!Papapavlo’s Bistro here in marvelous Modesto has a full Mediterranean and Greek filled menu that is sure to get your Greek on! Papapavlo’s has been under the ownership of brothers David and Valentine Alonso for the past 5 years. There are also 3 more brothers involved in thefamily busi-ness. Juan is the general manager, Sergio is the executive chef, and Jose works in the kitchen. The Alonso family is very large including 4 sisters, 24 nieces and nephews, Opa! The Alonso’s were born in Jalisco, Mexico and with the encouragement from their Dad to learn English and seek more opportunities he guided them to the United States inspiring their culinary passions. The entire family now resides in Modesto as they are very close. Of course my curiosity was peaked how they ended up purchasing a Mediterranean restaurant as their heritage derived from Mexico. It turns out it’s all about the love of the food! Now I can relate to that! Chef Sergio makes everything from scratch including the Moussaka, Patitsio, and the Spankopita a fabu-lous combinationplatter featured on the menu. Chef Sergio is married to

Leidy and they have 4 children age range 1 month to 9 years old, Opa! Chef Sergio enjoys family time walk-ing and shopping around downtown Modesto, working on cars, and eating seafood pasta. He also told me of a funny fishing excursion in the SF Bay. He thought he was about to catch a good size fish when he was surprised to see a 4ft. shark on the end of his hook! Opa! Yes, about 10-15 times a day you will hear “Opa!” exclaimed throughout the restaurant. Whether it’s because someone dropped or broke something, and especially when a patron is served the Saganaki aka the Flaming Cheese Show, Opa! You will hear it again as a customer takes a shot of Ouzo or 5 star Mextaxa, favorites ofpatrons who enjoy the black licorice flavored li-queurs. Papapavlo’s has a full bar that includes an extensive Captain’s wine list featuring wines throughout CA regions. Napa, Lodi, and Paso Robles are well represented in the selection list. As I dined on the culinary delights on

the combination platter and yes, a side of succulent, perfected Dana-li-cious grilled lamb chops, I eyed the dessert tray! OMG the tray has 10 unique choices, including Baklava, all being a possibility if I hadn’t already eaten so much, Opa! The dessert menu is more than reason-ably priced, too as it starts at $1.95,

Opa! Also check out their happy hour menu Mon. – Thurs. 3-7pm. Dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves), Hummos, or Calamari for only $5. Happy hour beers: $3, house wine $4, and well drinks $4. Papapavlo’s is a friends and family friendly place to dine. I was also told many that may parishioners from the Greek Orthodox Church often come in to dine on cultural tradi-tions, along with the priests and the lamb is their favorite, Opa! You can also have a party catered or there is a private party room right there on location. Opa! Its only definition is that itis an exclamation! I just lovesaying it! So when asked Beatles or Stones: Both Chef Sergio and Manager Juan looked at each other and answered the same, Beatles. I asked why? Chef Sergio chimed in 1st saying because it makes him feel good! Ok, it’s hard to argue with that!

favorite], but Hero’s offers a variety that other places don’t.” She lists the menu as being particularly dis-tinctive in that it offers the expected bar food but also offers a number of unique items and also many healthy options, the weekly line-up of hap-penings (listed below just for you), the events hosted by Hero’s, and the seasonally rotating beer selection. Jaco reassures, “We’re never with-out a good porter.” Jaco also states Hero’s is individual in that it’s out of the downtown circuit. She says, “People who are here want to be here. It isn’t the usual crowd.” Jaco also notes that the variety of events Hero’s hosts brings in a variety of people. Naturally sports events are a huge draw; Hero’s also hosts weigh-ins for amateur fights. Sports aside, He-ro’s also holds live music and comedy nights. I’ll admit…I drank quite a bit of St. Stan’s fantastic beer that day while talking to Melissa. I asked her how she might sum up Hero’s in one sentence. She stated: “Go big or go home,” a motto, I believe, perfectly befitting.

first time I had been to Hero’s. You better believe I was back the next day for more IPA.The ceiling-high extensive memo-rabilia collection, belonging to Hero’s owner Dan Carranza, is as versatile as the establishment itself. Notable items include a Lance Arm-strong jersey, Shaq’s unbelievably enormous shoe, a number of Mu-

hammad Ali items including a copy of his vinyl hit “I Am The Great-est”, 73 significant ticket stubs from Barry Bonds’ 2001 season…. honest-ly, there’s so much you’ll have to go see yourself. I’ve even heard rumors of Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Mon-roe’s marriage certificate being

housed there. The collection is so staggering it makes me wonder if Hero’s is just so large as to fit ev-erything in! As if this amazing array of collect-ables wasn’t enough, Hero’s is also home to the lovely Ms. Melissa Jaco, who is as hospitable as she is hot. Jaco, mother of two boys, has been working for the family owned establishment for 1 1/2 years and is quick to sing praises about Hero’s. “There are a lot of great bars in Modesto [she lists Speakeasy as a

I don’t get very excited over sports bars. I’m not one to tune in for big games, I couldn’t tell you who is on whatever team… I’m more of an indoor martini sort of person rather than a baseball game and beer one. 99% of sports bars I’ve ventured into have been a bit dis-appointing, to be nice, and can only be described as dark, narrow as hell, and un-remarkable. But I tell you what, Modes toView readers, Hero’s Sports Lounge and Pizza Co. has a firm grasp on that remain-ing 1% and it blows the rest out of the water. Hero’s 14,000 square feet fea-tures pool tables, outdoor patio seating (equipped with televisions, of course), elec-tronic poker, a sizable bar-side stage with a huge projection screen, ban-quet hall on the upper level, a VIP lounge featuring a 15 ft. screen, and seven, I counted twice to be sure, flat screen TVs around the main bar, and just so happens to be a doorway away from fresh, fan-tastic beer from St. Stan’s Brew-ing Company. Part bar/restaurant, part sports memorabilia museum, Hero’s is damn impressive to say the least. This interview was the

What’s New with Jazz and Blues? by Eric Benson

Well it’s not always all good now is it. One of our mainstays in the Jazz world, bandleader, musician and music educator Ernie Bucio has suffered a massive stroke on Monday August 15th and recently passed away. Jazz man Ernie Bucio had recently become part owner in Gottschalk’s Music Center and has been active on the music scene for decades.

And secondly, the Blue Monday Jam that I, Steve Ciraolo and many others have shed blood, sweat and tears over for over 7 years in the downtown is no longer happening at its more recent venue, Jax on H Restaurant. Over the years we have supported many of the local bands doing their thing and keeping themusic flowing and using as a showcase to promote shows in town. We would like to thank the Johnny Valdez & Straight Ahead Band, DARC Band, Big Earl & the Cryin’ Shame, MCW Band, Ultra Lounge, Valley Rhythm Section with Earl Evans, Gloria Scott Band, Anthem, Joe Barretta Band, Rhythm Deluxe, Third Party (Beatles Tribute). We have had special guests Chris Cain, Dave Mathew’s, Mic gilette, John Stowell, George Railey to name a few. Thanks to all the musicians and artists that came down to play, listen, dance and network to make Motown a more happening place, thanks all! After approximately 364 shows over this period I am going to take a little hiatus to chill out a bit before finding a new home for what has been a gas.

Continuing on John Griswold’s Global Music Series brings in Sahnas that celebrates the music of America, Spain, and Greece. The events continue and take place at a private intimate house in Modesto with the best in catered food. Beverages are BYOB. John’s also bringing in Jazz guitarist Steve Oliver to the Whitmore Mansion on September 23rd. The Mansion is a nice outside venue with good sound and plenty of room to stroll around while enjoying the music. So giveJohn a holler for more info at: (209) 491-7185, or http://www.eArtsnews.com

I really feel like something suspicious is happening with time. It makes no sense that we are looking at Christmas coming around the bend like a freight train. Luck-ily, we can enjoy another awesome month of fun in Modesto. Each event seems to act like a bit of a speed bump of sorts to slow us down for a while. That is always a good thing. The first event that I want to mention this month is the annual Harvest Luncheon that is scheduled for September 9th at Graceada Park. This is an event that at-tracts 800 people per year and showcases the farming industry that keeps so much of our economy alive.

Ronald Reagan spoke at this event while serving as Governor. This is where you will meet all the folks that make the laws and shape our state. Call the Modesto Chamber of Commerce for more details and to reserve a seat at 209-577-5757.

Foodies are going to be able enjoy several chances to get a mouthful of delicious fun this month also. If you miss the Harvest Luncheon, take the time to eat their re-sults at a number of fun gatherings.

Unbutton your pants real quick to get some practice. Take a deep breath. Check out this insane menu of food celebrations:Edible Extravaganza - Modesto Centre Plaza - Sept. 1

Assyrian Food Festival - Assyrian Cultural Center - Sept. 10

Taste of McHenry Village - McHenry Vil-lage - Sept. 15

Flavors of Stanislaus County - Martin Peterson Event center - Sept. 16

Greek Food Festival - Greek Orthodox Church - Sept. 17

Get all the details on these events includ-ing prices and times at visitmodesto.comSeptember is also the month that Modesto Pride holds their annual gathering at Graceada Park. Count on a fun day for everyone involved. This event touches me in a way. Ilove the colors, the sense of freedom and the courage that is always proudly on display. Take a camera and an open mind and see life in a rainbow of vivid colors. Good times! See modesto-pride.org for details.

On a personal note, I’d like to thank every-one that came out to see me at The Fat Cat on the night before X-Fest. We packed the house with a fun crowd and a host of odd-ball comedians that succeeded in generat-ing a few hearty laughs. Our headlining act even showed up! I had a crazy day that day with some unexpected medical drama but I still went on and had a blast. Two of my heroes will be in Modesto this month. I bet that they would have gone on stage in the midst of the drama also. Check out www.galloarts.org for information about their new season that opens with Bill Cosby on Sept. 17. The following night Dennis Miller will take over the Gallo stage.

Don’t forget to support your local artists as we try to make our dreams come to life. Head downtown for the Third Thursday Artwalk on Sept. 15 and make sure to also check out the awesome St. Clair Theater every Saturday night to see some of-Modesto’s hottest comics do what they do.

The St. Clair is tucked away at 417 Seventh St. and offers a long list of events in addi-tion to comedy. Hit them up for Blues, Jazz, R&B, Soul, poetry, Reggae and Theatrical performances as well. Follow them on Facebook at tinyurl.com/stclairrocks Enjoy the month. By the end of it you will be sitting on your couch staring at art that you bought while you shop online for weight loss shakes and some sort of cream to reduce your laugh lines.

by Shasta BossNot Your Wallets!LET THE LEAVES FALL...

The leaves are starting to fall into a variety of colors and as the sea-sons change so should our fashions. School has started for all the young people but that doesn’t mean our money has to fall from our pockets to cover work attire or back to school shopping. Stretching the money in your pocket as far as it can go is a challenge worth master-ing. You have to keep your eyes peeled for the best deals in the store

and usually be prepared to search through racks of clothing and stacks of shelves. Shopping on a budget has never been easier and more affordable, if you know the hot spots around town.Children grow out of clothes so fast that some items are never even worn and some are just too cute to throw away. Little Ones, a locally owned children’s consignment style boutique, knows this first hand, and they offer a way to bring in your child’s gently used necessities, clothing, toys, books, and more into the store for cash or store credit. Little Ones children’s boutique strives on being able to help out families stretch their dollars with extremely affordable prices and also help the environ-ment by recycling, reusing, and reselling these gently used items for others to love. Christina, the Manager, is so friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about all of the products they sell. One of the best selling items in the store are the strollers, though they do carry a large number of other necessity items. A costume rack is up now too so you can be prepared for Halloween early. Don’t forget that little boys love cars so be sure to check out the new Hot Wheels table and for $0.75 each you can

buy a bunch. (Great for little re-wards). The right side wall is filled with all new extremely popular items including adorable and dif-ferent color tutus, hats, hair clips, headbands, and more. The tutus

and headbands are great because they can fit baby girls up to about age 12 and that makes it easy for cute twin matching possi-bilities. So, if your shopping for your own children, soon to be baby, or for gifts you definitely want to

check this boutique out, specifi-cally designed for the Little Ones. They do have requirements for buying items so please call first or check online at www.littleonesmo-desto.net for those requirements. Little Ones, 3250 Dale Road, Suite GLadies, get ready to step into a whole store full of designer in-spired purses with super affordable prices (most start at $25.00). This Purse Heaven has a store wide selection of different size bags and clutches containing ruffles, rhine-stones, prints, purples, golds, and more. They also carry some lug-gage and wallets. My favorite finds here are the $1.00 dress up rings and $1.00 rhinestone hair clips. The zebra print products are super popular with the high school ladies and they carry a variety of zebra

print luggage and purses which are also great and affordable finds. Purse Heaven, 409 Burney Street off G St.

Check out a huge selection of brand name and popular items carrying men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, hats, and more with great prices. Plato’s Closet has racks after racks of trendy items from high fashion to casual wear. Mostly targeting young folks their racks are organized by jeans, skirts, tops, button ups, and jackets. Men’s wear is in the back. Allow some time to search throughout the store though, be-cause their racks are cramped with a huge inventory. Plato’s Closet, 3250 Dale Road Quick tip... Before wearingany type of used and even new items, make sure to wash them and for gently used shoes just spray a light mist of lysol in them to get rid of any lingering germs.

Quick Makeup Tip... Accentuate your best feature which saves saves time and products yet makes you look good without a lot of effort or money.

I wanted to apologize to Spellbound Jewelry for the printing mix up in my last months August article. There is more to Modesto than meets the eye. Every city in the world is more fascinating the closer you look. When you walk around, do your eyes look for small details, the railings, the borders, the corners, the trim, the shape, the landscape design? If you don’t it is time to start. Take your camera some day and just go on a Modesto tour and look a interesting buildings and some of the impressive and famous architecture here in town. It is fun and you can make a lot of pit stops doing it and make it an expedition. This month, we take this expedition to a whole new level with the Modesto Architecture Festival happening Sept 13-18. We intro-duce you to Bob Barzan, one of the founders of the festival, one of only 6 Architecture festivals in the world. Very cool.

Bob was born in Canada, moved to San Francisco as a child with his family. He moved to Modesto in 1963, graduated from Grace Davis High, MJC, and Cal State Stanislaus. Bob retired from the state Uni-versity system in 2003 serving primarily as a career counselor at SFSU, moving back to Modesto in late 2000. Bob founded the Modesto Art Museum with a wonderful group of local citizens and served for three years on the Modesto Public Art Committee.

BOB BARZAN Keeping an eye out for the small and amazing details in Modesto

What was the biggest loss in the renovations in the 60s and 70s?For the most part, wherever you see a parking lot down-town, there was probably a wonderful building that did not need to be torn down. The loss of the hotel Hughson and Cov-ell, as well as the Strand and Burge’s are regrettable. What is the biggest architec-tural secret in Modesto? That Modesto has a long tradi-tion of being on the cutting edge of architecture, It was a model for other cities and a laboratory for the development of a distinctive California style of architecture. Many of the best known architects of west-

ern US even with world reputa-tions designed buildings and landscapes in Modesto. What do you find the most fascinating about architecture? It is the only art form that we can regularly go inside of, be totally surrounded by, and it is the one that is most often unap-preciated. Kind of like a fish in water not noticing the water. Is there a period or style that you find the most interesting?Contemporary, what is hap-pening now in architecture. Architects are pushing limits of sustainability, green design, artistic exteriors, concern for community building, and livable cities. What would surprise the average Modestan about our local architecture? There are lots of things about local architecture that would surprise Modestans, that many books, magazines and journal articles have been published about Modesto architecture,

that the Museum of Modern at Art in New York featured a home in Modesto on the cover of it im-portant exhibit on modern archi-tecture in 1944, that some of the most important architects and landscape architects of the mid 20th century designed projects in Modesto, many when they were at the peak of their careers, and that it was for-ward think-ing Mod-estans that hired these men and even some women. Many are also sur-prised to learn Modesto has one of about 6 architecture festivals in the world, with San Francisco, Chicago, New York, London, and Barcelona. We recently had a contact from San-tiago, Chile, from a group there that would like to start a festival. They would like to work with the Modesto festival. Last year we had speakers and presenters from France, Canada, Germany, and the states. It is truly an international event. Do you feel that we understand the role of historic preservation? Not at all, that is why we will ad-dress historic preservation at the architecture festival this year, at the Wednesday evening Architec-ture Cafe What first attracted you to art and architecture? My parents. My dad from Italy and my mom from Canada of Italian descent, instilled in us an appre-ciation for the arts from when we

were small. It was assumed that this was valuable and important to a full life. What are your most artistic skills?Appreciating the art of others. What is your favorite spot in Modesto?

Any one of the sev-eral cafes in downtown Modesto. They are great places to hang out and run into people. Cafes have been part of urban life

since the 1700s. I host the archi-tecture cafe at Picasso, hang out after garage saling at Deva or Queen Bean, or meet with friends at Serrano. My favorite building in the old World Saving building at 10th and I. it is a great mid century building. The light fixture is worth

getting off the freeway to see. Why did you cre-ate the Modesto Art Mu-seum? Because Modesto was the

largest city in the country without a nonprofit art museum, no success-ful city has gotten to the place it is without art and an art museum. I think there is a correlation be-tween the amount of art in a city and its overall livability and suc-cess as a good home for people. The Modesto Art Museum is not like other museums though. We want to infuse the community with art, address community problems through the arts, bring art to the people. Our Meet Your Neighbor installation downtown is a great ex-

ample of the kind of art we want to do in Modesto. We want to make art a natural part of life and at the same time shake people up with the visual arts. How do you describe Modesto to people you meet when travel-ling?One of the largest cities in the country, it’s the 101st largest, but with few amenities and an almost overwhelm-ing number of urban prob-lems, but lots of potential. I also mention that it has a great mid century modern architecture heritage worth exploring and I suspect many-treasures yet to be remem-bered. What is your ideal evening in Modesto?Having a bunch of friends or family over for dessert, an evening of conversation, would be one, but also meeting friends somewhere for dessert and conversation. Are there are there any architec-turally notable buildings that are at risk right now?Oh yes, most notably the old post

office building, who knows what will happen there. Any empty build-ing of note, like the World Savings building is in danger. Why do you think Modesto be-came so architecturally signifi-cant?Because there were people liv-ing here not afraid to embrace the future. Modesto’s architecture, until

recently, was at least keep-ing with the times, Vic-torian in the 19th century, bungalows in the early 20th, art deco in the 30s and then on the cutting edge for the mid century period in a way not seen in many cities, especially such a small city. When Modesto was getting nation-al attention for its archi-

tecture, it had less than 25,000 people, and many of them were forward thinking and expressed it in the residential, landscape, gov-ernment, and commercial projects. Most important ModestoView question, Beatles or Stones?Beatles, but the Stones are number 2

Modesto View Readers lets just say if Mother Nature was rac-ing in The Amgen Tour, she would be riding the same bike my friend Dave Nicolau sports every Sunday on our group rides. I met Dave last year at 5:30 Fun Sports Bike rides on Sundays and his road bike instantly caught my eye. His bike frame is very light and it isn’t made of any type of man-made material but of Bamboo and Hemp. Thus, he from his bike has earned him the nickname, Bamboo Dave, in our Modesto cycling circles. It’s truly an earth friendly bicycle that’s very unique as well as durable. Bamboo Dave had been riding for nearly 20 years off and on but recently got back on the bike after new in-novations within the last 3 years in cycling have advanced and has made it more exciting for him again. It’s clear, cycling is his choice when it comes to fitness.

Bamboo Dave is a current member of The Stanislaus County Bicycle Club and generally puts down about 300 to 400 miles a month on his Bamboo Bicycle. I asked Bamboo Dave what made him choose Bamboo over any other. Over all, it’s the ride and uniqueness of it and you don’t see any around in the cycling circles and clubs. As far as the cost, Bamboo Dave compared it to any other medium price carbon frame and its made by Craig Calfee of Calfee Design located in La Selva Beach CA. http://www.calfeedesign.com/

Keep an eye out for Bamboo Dave on the streets he rides all year long and you can’t miss him. He cycles with his trade-mark bamboo bike as well as a florescent green jersey so he’s easy to spot. He really is a good guy and enjoys meeting new people and if you ride with him, he won’t leave you behind if you break down.

For more information on his bamboo bicycle, look for Bamboo Dave at this years Memorial Medical Center Run & Ride on September 17th It’s one of Bamboo Dave’s favorite community rides and if you’re a Tri-Athlete, it a great Event to get in some double dip-pin’ fitness. You can start out with a 2-mile, 10K race, run or walk followed by a casual safe bicycle ride followed with a fantastic Modesto Police Of-ficers Association BBQ at the finish line. The Memorial Medi-cal Center Run & Ride has been part of our community here in Modesto as a healthy lifestyle event since 2004. It’s an amazing Event that pro-motes family fitness, a healthy lifestyle with a BBQ, music by yours truly The Quake DJ. There are free massages. The Kids Run is free for ages 10 and under and the Kids Zone has fun activities. This is a family friendly event and a great place to show

support for cancer awareness and cancer survivors in our community. A cycling jersey or tech running shirt and a BBQ lunch are included with every registration. This is not a fundraiser, it is an awareness event for our commu-nity. The Memorial Medical Run & Ride is on September 17th at Modesto JR College West Campus on Blue Gum Avenue. The Festival Starts at 7am and there is no cost to attend. If you would like to participate in either the run or the ride or both, please visit our friendshere for more information or to register online go to www.memorialmedi-calcenter.org or call Cancer Services at (209) 569-7789

Modesto has a culture and reputation for American Graffiti. But, I do believe that we are missing a crucial part of that history. The music genres such as blues, androots rock-n-roll that make Rockabilly great are a big part of our history dating back to the 30s and 40s. I recently met up with Tony Trevino of The Pendletons and asked him a few questions about genres of music and why he de-cided the musical path of Rockabilly? “It is one of the main roots of pure American music. It’s the original bad boy music. As a child my father and aunt turned me onto The Stray Cats and as I got older I became super passionate about music, art and culture. I began to research on who invented rock-n-roll. It mainly, boiled down to the marriage of folk, blues and country all mixed in one big pot and formed Rockabilly. It’s the original cool….. It’s rebellious along with fun to write and play.” Tony also mentioned that he took the traditional rockabilly roots with The Pendletons and fused them together with my more modern roots i.e. punk, psychobilly and broken blues to form what he likes to call modern or neo-rockabilly”. Tony founded The Pendletons in 2003 and had the opportunity to play with a few different musicians over the years, for which he is incredibly grateful. Tony picked up Elan Tribo in 2009, an upright bass player “extraordinaire”. He recently added new drummer Mikey Skullz, whom he met while performing on a segment on FCC Free Radio. Mikey was the DJ and is now the back beat of the Pendletons. Living in the Central Valley (Modesto) what do you see happening with the Rocka-billy Scene? “I see an incredibly bright future”, Tony said. When it comes down to the timeless sounds of Rockabilly roots in the Central Valley. You can find The Pendletons on Unity Music Presents or Facebook. Jennifer AllsupSweet Pea Pickers Promotions

Rockabilly and Modesto Rootsby Jennifer Allsup

Hello, I am glad to be back for the September playlist. This list is all local and you most likely can see any one of these bands right here in Modesto and these are some songs that you have to log on and get right this second. I am going to kick off this month’s list with an old favorite of mine... UVR- “California Sunshine” – (Pop- Punk- Rock) The first time I saw these guys was the end of my freshman year at Modesto High School. They played the end of the school year bash. I was already in love with their song “Got 2 Girlfriends” but seeing them live... wow, talk about a school girl crush! I am so excited to say that they will be playing Sept 2nd at the Copper Rhino! myspace.com/uvr Soda – “Old Riley” – (Avantgarde-Country- Rock) Although I have heard of the name several times I was recently turned on to his music by my neighbor and musician Roy Dean and I am so grateful!! I have been listening non stop. Very powerful and interesting stuff! Can’t wait to see him on my b-day Oct 7th at Copper Rhino! Hope to see you there! reverbnation.com/sodagardocki B Side Saints – “Sucker” – (Reggae-Rock) New band but the members are no strangers to the Modesto scene, you might recognize some of these guys from scene favorite Washed Up. I will admit that I was really sad to see that band break up but allthose feelings left the moment B Side Saints hit my ears! If you switched a Sublime song on a juke box in a bar somewhere and put in this song no body would care! reverbnation.com/bsidesaints Sandra Delores – “Born Good” – (Acoustic- Pop) The look, the AMAZING voice, the personality... she is a must see act. Listen-ing to her recorded stuff is great but her live show is simply stunning! Do yourself a favor and treat your ears to her music! myspace.com/sandradolores Dandelion Massacre – “DMT” – ( Americana- Punk) Fresh back from tour these guys are definitely one of my Modesto favorites! Very unique! The genre I listed explains it perfectly, their music is very Ameri-cana mixed in with punk vocal styling. They are a great live show so keep your eyes peeled for their next performance! Thank you for reading my article and thank you to Chris Murphy with the Modesto View for al-lowing me to be a part of this again. I hope you enjoy the music and please don’t be a stranger, stop by Friday nights at the Copper Rhino for my weekly show “The Weekly Issue.” (facebook.com/theweeklyissue) Correction from last month, I listed this band as Irie and the song “Tide Reef” but it is actually the band “Irie” song “Tide Reef”. As far as my Sept dates for the Weekly Issue at Copper Rhino, they go like this Sept 2 - UVR/ Disturbing the Peace/ Nottus Music/ Birdhands Sept 9 - Irie Tide/ City Psychology/ TBA Sept 16 Pendletons Sept 23 Better Left Unsaid Sept 30 Reggae Contact: Jill Ferris209.614.9096One More Night Music Group Promotions / Booking / Management

As our aspiring young home brewer rides his mountain bike with “fat tires” through European villages famous for beer, New Belgium Brewing Company was but a glimmer in his eye, or basement. Jeff Lebesch would return to Fort Collins with a handful of ingredients and an imagination full of recipes. Jeff’s first two basement-brewed creations? A brown dubbel with earthy undertones named Ab-bey and a remarkably well-balanced amber he named Fat Tire.

To say the rest was history would be to overlook his wife’s involvement. Kim Jordan was New Belgium’s first bottler, sales rep, distributor, marketer and financial planner. The other side of the New Belgium story isn’t as roman-tic as bicycling through Europe, but it gives testament to their dedication and hard work. And it goes like this: Jeff, an electrical engineer by day and tinkerer by nature, builds a homebrewing kit in his basement out of repur-posed dairy equipment. His Belgian inspired brews garnered enough praise from friends and neighbors that Jeff and Kim take their basement brewery commercial in 1991. Before they ever sold a bottle of beer, Kim and Jeff hiked into Rocky Mountain National Park with a jug of home brew in one hand and pen and pad in the other. Together, they wrote down what they wanted to instill into this business dream of theirs.

Kim, social worker by day and mother to two always, began the mar-keting process by knocking on their neighbor’s door. Anne Fitch was that neighbor and her watercolors are the artwork we continue to use on our labels today. With labeled bottles and local encouragement, the first Belgian-style beers brewed in the United States were offi-cially for sale.

As this tasty amber named Fat Tire grew in popularity, Jeff and Kim knew they’d need help. Enter Brian Callahan, an aspiring brewer and New Belgium’s first employee-owner. By giving Brian a vested interest in the company, Jeff and Kim did, “what seemed like the right thing to do.” And all the employee owners today thank them for doing what came naturally. Ownership is now awarded at one year of employment. And just when you think it can’t get any better, they roll in your very own one-year anniversary cruiser bike. It’s pure bliss.

In 1998, a unanimous vote by employee owners switched New Belgium to wind power. The first wind powered brew-ery in the United States, thank you very much.

This month I would like to pay tribute to the place that I hold dear-est to my heart here in Modesto. Of course I’m talking about The Fat Cat Music House & Lounge. Since 2003, I have called this place home and have promoted or seen some of the greatest bands EVER!! Names like Killswitch Engage, Static-X, High on Fire, Devil Driver, Rob Zom-bie, Y&T, and countless other national bands have graced this stage, but what holds dearest to me is although Fat Cat hosted all kinds of music it has been a breeding ground for local metal bands. Bands like Better Left Unsaid, Nothing But Losers, Cursed, & Stigmurder all cut their teeth and honed their sound in this legendary Modesto venue. Some times I think to myself “where would we be with out a Fat Cat?”. You don’t wanna know the answer to that question. Every metal/Rock band in this town owes that club everything theyhave. With little to no overhead the Fat Cat has been a haven for local metal promoters for years. I am proud to say I learned a lot of what I know and I met a lot of my friends at The Fat Cat. I stronglyurge you not to take this mecca for granted because some day we may not have it anymore.

Complete show listings for The Fat Cat www.fatcatmodesto.com Tickets are available at The Box Office 209-524-1400 Mon-Fri 10am-6pm

For as much as America has become a wine drinking nation, it amazes me how many very nice restaurants have inappropriate or poor quality wine glasses or stemware or how often the glass smells like bleach or detergent. While you may not have any control over the glass you get when dining out, with a little thought and minimal investment (I sell a nice pulled crystal glass for $5), you can make sure you and your guests get the most enjoy-ment out of your wine while dining at home.

A lot has been written in recent years about different styles of wines de-manding different types of stemware. Most stemware manufacturers have a large number of choices with characteristics designed to enhance specific types of wines. In theory, the different shapes direct the wine to different parts of the mouth, emphasizing the best characteristics of the particular wine you’re drinking. Now, if you followed the advice of these manu-facturers, we’d all own 8-10 different wine glasses. For most people this just isn’t practical and even for serious wine drinkers I would argue that three different glasses is enough. I would suggest a flute for Champagne or sparkling wines, a large bowl red wine glass, and a smaller bowl white wine glass.

One common characteristic is that they are all designed to hold a small amount of wine “relative” to the volume of the glass, allowing the aroma of the wine to collect in the bowl and leaving room to swirl the wine without spilling. This is important to remember when the “relative” we all have grabs your new 22 ounce red wine crystal and decides to “fill-up” his or her wine glass. Short of dropping the bottle, there is no faster way to lose a bottle of wine. Seriously though, when choosing wine glasses, first pay at-tention to the material from which it is made. Wine glasses should be glass or crystal, not pewter or silver, and should be clear so you can adequately see and appreciate the wine. As mentioned before, the bowl should be big enough to allow a good size pour and still have enough room to swirl the wine without spilling. The glass should have a stem so it can be held without getting greasy fingerprints on the bowl and so your hands don’t in-crease the temperature of the wine (holding the bowl in your hands can be useful if the wine being served is too cold). Finally, your wine glass should be somewhat tapered at the top. A wine taster will use a swirling action to release aromas and aerate the wine, and the tapered shape serves to concen-trate the aromas near the nose.

Regardless of type, when caring for your glasses, wash with hot water alone or with a mild detergent. If using detergent, make sure the glasses are thoroughly rinsed; a soapy residue or even a trace of lemon or otherwise scented washing liquid can ruin the taste or nose of a wine. After washing, hold the glass up to the light to make sure they are clean; a less than clean glass can also affect the wine, particularly sparkling wines which will not demonstrate their fizz. Once washed, allow the glasses to drip dry. Once dry, a quick polish will rid them of any residual water marks. Store them upright in a clean, odor-free [email protected]

You bet your glass it’s important.by Brad Gibson
